Paranoid Robin, as suggested by Vanderspiegel. This one was fun. Can you tell I was inspired by Bernadetta for this one?

The girl peers out from behind the tent flap, clutching her tome tightly. The coast looks clear. No Frederick, no Chrom, no Lissa, no Shepherds. Just some guards.

Big, tall, burly guards. Guards that could probably snap her like a twig! Guards that will kill her!

The woman's fingers drum on the cover of her tome. Maybe she should shoot them? But they're allies... for now. Maybe one of them is a traitor who will stab her in the back! Or maybe all of them are traitors! Maybe even the Shepherds are traitors, and this is some elaborate ruse to pry her genius out of her brain and dispose of the body in a ditch somewhere!

No, no... for now they're allies. She can't turn her back to them though, just to be safe.

When Robin cautiously moves from one end of the clearing to the next she moves sideways like a crab, never breaking line of sight with the guards.

"Another one down..." She mutters to herself. She turns her gaze to her next target: the strategy tent. It's across another clearing, with even more guards. They're probably even scarier, with anti-Robin agendas! Yes, they probably hate tacticians, Robin can tell because of the steely glint in their eyes, and the way their hands grip their lances, and how they glance, sharply, in her direction!

From behind her someone releases a long, tired sigh. Before Robin has a chance to turn and blast them in the face, strong hands pick her up and carry her across the clearing and into the tent. "I have found our tactician Milord."

"Thank you Frederick. So glad you could join us Robin." Chrom says with an amused smile. "What incredible dangers did you find in our camp this time?"

"The guards were looking at me with death in their eyes!"

"Oh really?"

"Betrayal behind every movement, just waiting for the opportunity to strike..."

"I see." Chrom says. "And I suppose these guards specifically hate female longcoat-wearing amnesiac tacticians, just like Lissa supposedly did last week?"

"Yes!"

"Right." Chrom nods, highly amused. "Did they offer you cursed sweets like Lissa did too?"

"Not yet."

"Right." Chrom tries not to roll his eyes. "So, in other news, we're still at war."

"Really?"

"And we still need to know how we're going to navigate the desert."

"I thought that was a lie to try and lure me out of my safe place, so I could be shanked in the back!" Robin whirls around, aiming a spell at the entrance where there is... no one. "...at some point."

"Uh-huh." Chrom doesn't even look up from the map. "So, do we want to stray towards the north through the rockier terrain, or are we heading straight through the sand dunes?"

"North. The dunes make it easier to hide an ambush. Rocks actually flatten out the terrain more overall." Robin mutters. She's still shooting glances over her shoulder at the tent entrance. "We can see foes coming that way. Useful for a small group like ours."

"Thank you Robin." Chrom nods, and scribbles a note down on a piece of parchment. "Now about our supply train..."

###

Robin is sneaking through the supply tent when she runs into him. She'd just ducked through the back of the tent and was creeping behind the storage barrels when she came face-to-face with-

"Ambush! Assassin bunny!"

"Ahhhh! Don't kill me!"

The two of them leap out from their shared hiding spots, knocking over some of the lighter barrels in the process. Yarne scampers behind a weapon rack while Robin puts her back to a stack of crates while aiming a thunder spell at him.

"Ah-ha! I knew there were assassins in the camp!" Robin cries triumphantly. "You tried to kill me behind the barrels where no one would find my body, but I see you now!"

"Don't shoot!" Yarne cries out. "I'm not an assassin! I don't want to go extinct!"

"Oh really? Then why are you sneaking? Sneaking people are always assassins!" Robin asks accusingly. "Don't think your cute bunny ears will fool me! I see right through you bunny man!"

"I was hiding from Frederick!" Yarne insists. "H-He wanted me to take part in something called the 'fanatical fitness hour'! I've seen people do that before, and they come back looking half dead! I don't want to be half dead! That's practically being half extinct!"

"I see..." Robin nods seriously. "I too and avoiding that lie. Clearly it's not an exercise at all. It's a convenient excuse to tire me out, then stab me in the neck and dump my body into a lake!"

"R-Really? That seems a bit extreme, even for Frederick..."

"You haven't seen the unending cruelty that lies behind those eyes." Robin warns in a low hiss. "He told me that I 'had a meeting' yesterday. A meeting with death I think! He clearly wanted to lure me into a tent so I could be disposed of quietly! I am not so easily fooled!"

"Uh..." Yarne knows he can be a bit overly-fearful, but this is a whole new level. "I don't think he'd quite do that..."

Robin's eyes narrow, and she aims a spell at him again. "You're a spy, aren't you? You pretended to be smart, like me, but you're secretly working for Frederick!"

"No! I'm avoiding him!"

"He forced you into working for him!"

"No! I'm just trying to get away from him, nothing more!" Yarne insists frantically. "Please aim that spell somewhere else! Fried taguel is not as tasty as fried rabbit!"

"Oh sure, I believe you..." Robin says, and lowers her hand. Yarne relaxes. Finally, she's not going to- "-is what I'd say if I was a fool!" She barks, pulling the spell up again. "I have a better idea! You are going to slowly back out of this tent, and if you do anything suspicious, I'll blast you! Got it?"

"Y-Yes Ma'am!" Yarne yelps, holding his hands in the air.

"Get moving!"

Yarne does as he's told and slowly backs out of the tent. Robin's eyes him with suspicion the entire time.

###

"Chrom!"

"Robin."

"I ran into an assassin!"

"Again, hmm?" Chrom mutters. "Who was it this time? Lissa? The cleaning service? A rat?"

"A huge bunny man!"

"So Yarne."

"Yarne... even his name reeks of suspicion! He's a bunny, but named after a cat's toy. Clearly that indicates he's bait for me, the cat. The cat who will pounce on the yarn and get her claws stuck, so the hunters can hack my head off!"

"Robin, he's not trying to kill you."

"You don't know that! In fact, I don't know that you're not in on the whole conspiracy!"

Chrom massages the bridge of his nose. "Right. So, have you come here to shoot me with lightning then?"

"Maybe." Robin says, eyes narrowed with suspicion.

Chrom sighs. "You interrogated Yarne yourself when he joined the Shepherds, you have no reason to be suspicious. Unless you forgot that... just like you forgot his name apparently."

"Clearly he used his masterful sneaky skills to go underneath my notice, and force me to forget him..."

"We both know it doesn't work that way Robin."

"That's what you want me to think!"

"Incidentally, I'm assigning you a tentmate."

"Another assassin..."

"And after what happened today, I'm going to choose Yarne, just to prove that you're being irrational."

"A second chance for the evil bunny to succeed in his mission and eliminate me." Robin mutters. "Challenge accepted..."

"Robin, if you injure him, I will actually throw you in a lake. Assuming Panne doesn't first."

###

"I'm on to you..."

"Oh Naga, I'm going to die!"

###

Robin sleeps with a dagger under her pillow and her coat over her body. The coat has metal plates sewn inside, making it deceptively protective (and heavy). She sleeps facing Yarne at all times, and stares at him while falling asleep just to make sure he doesn't leap up and bite her face off or something.

Yarne, for his part, keeps his beast stone on him at all times in their shared tent, just in case Robin decides he stepped too far in one direction and that justifies trying to kill him. So far she hasn't actually tried to kill him, despite her threats. Yarne feels like he's going to end up just as paranoid as her at this rate.

Chrom even has the audacity to insist they pair up in battle. Yarne has never felt less confident in a battle then when he has Robin watching his back. Robin has never felt more vulnerable then those battles that she's forced to support Yarne rather than watching her own back. She's forced to trust her allies won't let her get flanked, and she hates it.

Even more terrifying for Yarne is when he has to spar with Robin (something Robin herself insists on for "better cohesion". She says that with a grin that looks more like a sneer), because Robin can effortlessly kick his ass with magic, a sword, or really any weapon given to her. She once beat him in a spar using a random laundry pole she found lying around.

"I have to be able to use anything, in case the assassins strike when I'm unarmed." Robin explained, and poked his throat with the pole. "Take this as a warning..."

Yarne is very warned. He's so warned he wants to never set foot within fifty meters of the woman ever again.

One night, Yarne wakes up with Robin sitting on his stomach with one hand clamped around his mouth. Her red eyes stare intently into his own. The adrenaline spike snaps Yarne to wakefulness, but he freezes when he sees Robin's eyes narrow.

"Don't kill me." He manages to say despite her hand blocking his mouth. "Whatever it is, I didn't-"

"Shh..." She whispers. Her eyes dart to the closed tent flap, then back to him. "Listen." She mouths. "Outside."

Yarne does that. His large ears twitch, one pressed to the ground and the other in the air. Muffled thumps indicate footfalls, and he can hear faint whispers in the air.

The voices aren't familiar.

"Assassins?" Yarne thinks to himself, in mild shock. "Actual intruders. Somehow they got past the guards."

Seeing that he understands, Robin removes her hand and slowly gets off his stomach. She quietly pulls out Thoron and a silver sword, holding one in each hand. Yarne gets to his feet with equal caution, and grabs his beast stone from it's spot next to his bedroll.

"Where do we go?" Yarne says as quietly as he can. "Out the back?"

Robin mutely shakes her head. "They might get the others if we delay." She whispers back. "We attack."

Yarne fights back a whine and the jolt of cold fear in his veins. Two against a dozen, and those are just the people he heard.

Robin creeps toward the flap of their tent, and Yarne reluctantly moves to the other side. Robin looks to him. "You first." She mouths.

Yarne understands. A giant rabbit bursting out of a tent is a good surprise attack. It doesn't make him enjoy going first any more though. He takes a deep breath, clenches the stone in his hands, and rushes out of the tent.

The taguel howls as he barrels through a small group of men with swords. His thick hide and disjointed armor pieces block what few nicks he would have gotten from the clumsy attacks the men made when they dove out of the way. Twisting around, Yarne can see ten, twelve, fifteen attackers.

Robin shanks one of them in the back with her sword. Fourteen.

Swords, bows, two mages. This should be manageable. Yarne takes aim at the mages and charges. Robin blasts the mages with Thoron, forcing them to dodge so they can't attack Yarne while he approaches. A slash and a bite is all Yarne needs to eliminate the magic-users.

Robin pockets her tome in favor of a free hand. She blocks one attack with her sword, grabs the attacker by the shirt, knees him in the groin, then slashes his throat when he fumbles his sword. She scoops up the abandoned blade from the floor, now fighting with two swords.

Most people haven't realized Robin is ambidextrous, and it's a fatal mistake to assume Robin will be weaker with one hand then the other. Two more attacks die before the group realizes Robin hasn't made an error by using two weapons at the same time.

However, the fight is still two to nine, and now that the element of surprise has worn off Robin and Yarne are in a spot of trouble. Yarne is fast and relatively durable, but he's a relatively easy target for anyone with a steady hand due to his size. Robin is a masterful dodger, but one good hit and she's gone. Neither really specializes in group combat. They're both far better at duelling than anything else.

They don't have time to think. Some of the group draws their bows, and so the two Shepherds spring into action. Robin throws a sword at the nearest opponent, killing him instantly, and uses the opening to rush the archers. Yarne barrels in to cover her back, taking a few hits from swords along the way.

With swords in their sheaths, the assassins holding bows go down quickly to Robin's bladework. Yarne snarls and swipes at the men trying to surround him, merely buying time for Robin to finish up and come to his aid.

Robin grabs one of the bows and shoots a man in the face. She then chucks the bow at an attacker who attempts to rush her, and Yarne slashes the man's feet out from under him when he swerves to avoid the bow. The rest of the men move in to attack Yarne, and he suffers multiple lacerations to his side.

With their foes' numbers sufficiently trimmed, Yarne backs out and Robin finishes the fight. The three remaining men are no match for Robin's superior swordsmanship and fall within seconds.

The entire fight took less than a minute. Other Shepherds that heard the commotion come rushing out of their tents half-armored with whatever weapons they could find at the time in hand only to see fifteen dead men, a wounded giant rabbit, and Robin glaring at all of them.

###

"I told you so!"

Chrom sighs deeply. He's never going to hear the end of this. Robin is going to use this incident to justify her paranoia for months to come.

"If I hadn't had Yarne with me, I would have had to leave you all to die!" Robin insists. "I wouldn't have been able to fight them all on my own!"

"Glad to hear you value our lives so much." Chrom replies dryly.

"We need to double the guards, triple the army! Let no suspicion go unpunished!"

"That's a bit of an overreaction Robin."

"You're right, who knows how many spies we would recruit..." Robin mutters.

"These things happen in war Robin. We'll revise the protocols for how we train for guard duty and everything will be fine."

"That's what someone in on the conspiracy would say!"

"Yeah!"

Chrom turns a withering glare on Yarne, who shrinks in his infirmary bed. "Don't encourage her."

"Don't threaten Yarne! He helped me fight assassins, unlike you!" Robin says accusingly, coming to the boy's defence.

"I was asleep Robin, I hardly think-"

"That absolves you of suspicion? Absolutely. Me and Yarne are going to be watching you extra closely from now on, potential conspirator!"

Yarne nods rapidly in agreement, and Chrom wishes (not for the first time) he could have found a normal amnesiac tactician rather than this nutjob.

Yarne seemed to be a natural fit for working with this version of Robin. I could easily see Robin convincing him of all her delusions.

bauers374: Indeed! Also more traumatized than Ricken… by a large margin.

Indeed. I think Virion is criminally underrated overall.

I was actually thinking Warhammer, but that could work too.

Darkness is complete: Noted.

Guest: It only occured to me afterwards.

Firehedgehog: :D

Kuroshiroryuu: You'll get to see a bit more in the short epilogues. I'm glad you liked smol Robin.

Guest: Well I hope you like it then.

I've never played Castlevania. Don't really have an opinion.

Never fear, Simon Belmont is here!

TanakaClinkenbeard: Huh. Interesting. I'll put it down.

Cyberchao X: Indeed Minerva is.

That was the goal: to be as disorienting as possible while still getting the idea across.

No I didn't actually. I only realized it was chapter 69 about halfway into writing.

Tophermon: More hits than misses? Works for me.

ToAruKagakuNoPersona: Would you believe me if I told you I've actually had that first idea before? Someone once jokingly suggested "memetic cognitohazard Robin" and I thought of this as a result of musing how that would work. Now that someone has actually mentioned it, I'll see about trying to use it.

The rest… noted.

Dayleaf: It seems like a lot of people like Tiki. I'll note your interest in assistant/mood ring. Treasure Hunter Robin has not been done yet, and honestly, considering I have only thirty chapters left and many more "standard" ideas left, it's very unlikely to get used. Still, I'll note it down.

Greenking500: Always happy to hear from a new reader. Your choices of favourite are actually rather unusual compared to what I've heard from most people (except the Chained Lady. A lot of people seem to like that one).

Emmet… okay. So, Emmet has been a background character for a while. He's taken a role of minor importance in chapters 35, 62, and now 69, though he's been mentioned in passing more times than that. I'm well aware original characters are heavily hit or miss, so I've been sparing in my use of him and intentionally avoided expanding on him too much so he doesn't overstay the tolerance of my readers when I do choose to use him. If you're interested though...

He's the quartermaster (responsible for managing all the supplies) of the Shepherds, and doesn't take to the battlefield for the most part due to his prosthetic leg. He is not intended as a replacement for Robin. He is not even a tactician. He is, however, the most combat-experienced member of the intial group of Shepherds being a veteran of the Ylisse-Plegia war (it's for that reason he was suggested to join the Shepherds, along with a few other reasons that haven't been mentioned yet, and not because he had any particular connection to Chrom or Lissa). He lost his leg protecting Lissa on an early mission. He is usually curt, unfriendly, and bitter. He also specializes in magic weapons, meaning he occasionally is mentioned in conjunction with Robin learning to use a levin sword. Other than that, as chapter 69 mentioned, he's an orphan. In chapter 62, he also says "I speak from experience" when comforting Robin on heartbreak. If you're willing to look for clues, there's something else important about him that pops up in certain chapters (like chapter 50, and I'm not talking about the scene where he is mentioned by name), though I won't blame you if you can't figure out what I'm talking about (or don't want to try). It's intentionally vague, and it's only a minor tidbit.

Long story short: he's a war vet, got crippled protecting Lissa, is super bitter, now acts as the quartermaster, and has some minor grief stuff in his backstory that he doesn't usually mention. I think I've rambled enough about him for now. There's more to him that hasn't been mentioned (explicitly) in any chapter yet, so I won't say it here.

Future Robin and mind-swapping huh? Noted.

Ghost Saga: It's only plagiarism if you copy something exactly and distribute it with intent to make a profit or injure the image of the original work. Also, I've explicitly given permission for other people to take whatever they want from my stories and run with them. Don't refrain from posting out of a misguided fear of plagarism.

Bodyguard Robin huh? That's not one I hear as a favourite often! Childlike Robin does have a lot of potential for comedy I'll admit, but comedy has always been difficult for me.

Kitsune Robin is an idea I've steered away from. When I look at it, it seems very much like it will end up just being Taguel Robin again (as in, the power really isn't all that different) or if we're going with the more magical kitsune rather than the fire-emblem kitsune… hmm… actually that might work… though probably not comedy. As I said, comedy is difficult.

There actually is an OP mage Robin! He doesn't actually use his magic, because I'm also terrible at writing combat, but he exists. He's basically a babysitter that's bitter he can't fight more wars. Supermagic Robin. Fun times. Alternatively, Goddess Robin has a boatload of magic power too, and she actually uses it a few times.

Mandalore the Illiterate: No. Just… no.

B1ackAshes: That chapter turned out so much better than I was expecting. I was originally trying to put Puppet and Broken together, but Child worked so much better.
