Gotta start being careful with which quirks I use. I still have a list of characters I need to feature too. I said I'd feature every character in some major capacity, and I damn well intend to. Actually, let me put that list here. The characters I still need to feature are: Kjelle, Cynthia, Nah, Anna, Say'ri, Aversa, Kellam, Lon'qu, Owain, Inigo, Brady, Gerome, Laurent, Basilio, and Walhart with Yen'fay and Priam being maybes (Yen'fay because he's a minor character and also difficult to write, and Priam because he comes completely out of nowhere and has no other part in the story aside from his paralogue. Most of the time I forget Priam even exists, I don't like him very much, and I think he'd be an active burden on any story I try to write).
This is a much more socially-focused story. As you know I suck at (or at the very least don't feel confident in/don't really care for) writing combat, so a combat-oriented power like this ends up being an accent to the story more than the main focus.
"Behold the power of the shadows!" Robin cries. She lifts her arms and her shadow extends along the ground like rushing water and engulfs the shadows of the brigands. Her larger shadow grapples the shadows of the brigands, and the brigands themselves react as if being choked. The gasp and cough and sputter and claw at their necks, trying to pull away the invisible force blocking their air, not realizing the attack is below them and a silent battle is being waged in the grass.
Robin nods smugly to herself when the group collapses on the ground, gasping and gurgling and eventually passing out. She turns her back to them, allowing the sleeves of her robe to trail behind her and accentuate the movement. That is the power of the shadows! The evil of the world cannot escape the darkness, for the darkness sees all and falls over everyone in time.
"I am so cool." Robin preens herself. "Did someone see that? Please tell me someone saw that."
No one saw that? No one is still looking at her, awed by her dark beauty and magnificence like they should be! Why does no one recognize her awesomeness? The others always talk about how cool Chrom or Frederick is, why not her?
"No matter. I know how cool I was." Robin huffs. "They'll recognize my amazingness eventually. I have dozens of lines prepared for any situation!"
"Nice job. Those guys might have been scary."
Robin, to her credit, hides her surprise very well. A master of darkness does not jump or squeak. No, she turns around elegantly and not in a rush at all and holds her head high. Regal, elegant, intimidating, beautiful. That's what she is. "Of course. That is exactly why I called upon the all-seeing darkness to-"
"Uh, we should probably go help the others." Kellam interrupts sheepishly. "The battle is still happening."
"Yes, of course." Robin nods with appropriately regalality. She turns with a grand sweeping movement that trails her sleeves behind her and strides towards the remaining enemies. Kellam precedes her, somehow not dragging attention with his heavy metal armor and giant shield. He is oddly quiet considering his equipment. He must have incredible skill. "I need to have equal skill! Perfect balance, straight back, head high. Never drop your confidence, not even for a second. A master of shadows must always be the very picture of composure!"
She doesn't get another chance to really show off her abilities. The main force has mostly cleaned up the remaining brigands by the time Robin gets there, and all she can contribute is a Flux spell.
###
Kellam isn't sure why he got assigned to guard Robin. She doesn't need it as far as he can tell. Her shadow magic completely wrecks havoc on any enemy she's been pointed at, and she's no slouch with dark magic for a more standard choice of combat either.
He supposes he may have been assigned to guard her because of the attention she attracts. The woman doesn't exactly try to make herself subtle. She's about as flamboyant as they come. In part that's because of her attitude, but her dress also seems tailored to draw attention.
Despite this also being her combat uniform, the dress is floor-length, silky, black in color, has sleeves that stop at the elbow but extend into long ribbons that trail behind her with every movement of her arms. It also has long slits on either side of the legs that go up to her hips and a very deep V-neck that goes down to her navel. It's a wildly impractical thing to wear into combat, but somehow it never gets caught on anything and never gets in the way. Kellam suspects magic.
Not that he'd know if you can even use magic like that. He doesn't understand magic at all. He wouldn't doubt it though.
As you might expect, dressing so flamboyantly and so provocative in a place as conservative as Ylisse gets Robin unwanted attention. Her unabashed use of dark and shadow magic, as well as being physically appealing, probably doesn't help either. Add that onto her clearly plegian features (extremely pale skin, long black hair, and purple eyes) and you have the perfect mixture for trouble.
Actually, Kellam can understand why he's assigned to guard Robin. It's not because she can't defend herself, far from it, it's because of how much of a hassle it is for her if someone doesn't accompany her, as on her own she tends to get into arguments and fights as other people take issue with her. At least when he accompanies her he can smooth things over or defuse a situation before it gets out of hand.
It's not like he has much better to do anyhow. In his spare time Kellam will admit he doesn't do much. He does a bit of whittling to pass the time, and cares for a small garden out back of the Shepherds' barracks, but guarding Robin is a perfectly fine use of his time.
"Come on Robin…"
"But I cannot back down after such an affront to my honor! A master of shadows does not back down from opposition, especially opposition so petty as a comment about my manner of dress!" Robin says, turning up her nose in pride. "What would it say about me if I were to flee at the first accusation of myself being a… what was the term he used? Skank?"
"The only people that will listen to him are similarly narrow-minded and would probably think the same anyways." Kellam offers quietly. "It's not worth your effort."
Robin is quiet for a moment, staring down her nose at the establishment they just left. She huffs and gracefully starts walking away, her ribbon sleeves trailing behind her. "You make a fair point, quiet knight. Let us move to somewhere else where the presence of a master of shadows will be appreciated."
"Right." He falls into step behind her, taking care to walk just far enough behind that he's not at risk of stepping on her dress as they move.
They end up in a bar, where Robin has a very animated discussion with a very drunk old lady about 'the power of darkness' or something like that. At least it keeps Robin out of trouble, though Kellam doesn't understand half of what's being said. The old lady doesn't seem to understand too much either, but Robin certainly has a lot to say.
"She must be really smart." Kellam decides. "She's got an entire philosophy..."
###
"Stay back!" Kellam grunts. He shunts the Risen away with his shield, then swings his lance around to slay one of them. The hoard is starting to get out of control. It looked like only a dozen or so at first, but after the cavaliers caught their attention more of the things emerged from the surrounding forest. Now the Shepherds are staring down almost a hundred of the things. "Robin! Are you okay?"
"I am fine, knight." Robin responds calmly. She's standing almost directly beside him on the frontlines, which seems way too dangerous for a mage like her in Kellam's opinion. "The shadows will protect-"
She's suddenly knocked back by Kellam's shield, which blocks the arrow that would have likely struck her head.
"Or perhaps I am protected by you." She murmurs. "Knight! Take my blessing!"
She raises her hands and plants them on the back of his armor. Kellam can feel a chill run through his body as her cold magic covers his metal plates and shield. His armor has gained dark accents, and every small movement he makes is accented by trailing wisps of blackness.
It's weird to be honest, and up until he nearly gets blasted in the face with a fireball he doesn't understand what it actually does. Pulling up his shield and blocking the fireball soon makes him realize, however, that the shadows are a sort of magical shield. A fireball would usually go right through his armor.
Okay, he can live with a chill if it means extra magic resistance. He'll definitely take that.
Stranger still, however, is when Robin climbs up onto his shoulders. She raises her hands up high and the very sky above them starts to darken despite a lack of clouds. "Behold foul creatures! The shadows do not forgive your evil!"
Kellam isn't quite sure what sentient shadows have to do with it, but when the sky darkens through Robin's power the Risen start to shiver and contort. Their glowing eyes flicker, and the smoke that trails off them is pulled to the sky to form a swirling grey and purple cloud. Kellam also finds the Risen react slower, and are therefore much easier to stab without fear of retaliation.
So sentient shadows or not, Robin is doing something, and he won't complain. He doesn't understand what that something is, but he's not a… uh... "Master of shadows".
Also… "You should get down. You might get shot. I can't protect you up there."
Robin huffs, affronted at the implication that she can't protect herself up here, but she listens and steps down anyways. Kellam feels a bit bad about getting in her way. He knows better than to contradict the wishes of a noble, but her safety is more important here. He hopes she isn't too annoyed. Noblewomen are scary when they're annoyed. Robin may not have a noble title, but she acts the part of a noble (if a particularly eccentric one) so Kellam is inclined to treat her as such.
The shadowed sky and its debilitating effect on the Risen allow the Shepherds to slowly cut down the hoard. As they kill more Risen, more of their cloudy purple essence is pulled skywards and added to the unnatural clouds forming over their heads.
When all the Risen are eventually dealt with, Robin raises her hands and eyes up to the sky. Shadows flare around her fingers for a moment, and the clouds suddenly compress down to the size of a marble. The marble then falls out of the sky and lands neatly in one of her outstretched hands. Robin smiles at the marble, then puts it away in a pocket.
"What's that?" Kellam asks hesitantly. "That… marble thing?"
"The coalescence of all the magic contained in those foul beings!" Robin says grandly, sweeping her arms out. "All of that power is now trapped in a small orb, to be crushed and used at a later time when such a boost in power is needed, or as the component to a ritual where such a thing may be useful."
"Woah…"
"Indeed! It is incredible." Robin smirks and holds her head high. She preens herself, smoothing her hair, straightening her back, and taking a wide, confident stance. She must cut a properly magnificent figure if others are to be suitably impressed! It seems her exploits have been finally noticed!
"Alright everyone! Let's move out!" Chrom barks. "There's still other Risen packs in the area, we have no time to waste!"
Everyone starts to move on, with no one sparing Robin another glance. The woman scowls to herself. Why will no one notice her?! Are her feats not impressive?
"Kellam noticed." She reassures herself. "Surely he'll pass on the tale of my grand display. Besides, if there is one person to notice, it is good that it is him. I have finally proven myself his equal!"
Yes, she will count today as a resounding success! Perhaps it is only one person who has noticed her magnificence, but that individual is the immovable silent knight! The great shield of the Shepherds as well as her assigned protector and guide! There is no one else she'd rather have noticed her!
While that's all true, it doesn't mean she isn't still a little disappointed no one else gave her a second glance.

"Did you see what Robin did!?" Lissa whispers excitedly. "It was so cool!"
"I know, right?" Ricken says eagerly. "I want to do that!"
"It's shadow magic though. I hear it's even more obscure than dark magic." Stahl says. "That might be problematic."
"Have y'all considered just askin' her how to do it?" Sully asks sarcastically. "Instead of gossipin' like my grandma's knittin' circle?"
"I mean…" Ricken coughs.
"Well…" Lissa mutters. "She's kinda intimidating."
"Yeah." Ricken nods rapidly. "She has this important air around her you know? She always looks busy too."
"And she's always talking about 'the shadows that see evil' and I don't get any of it." Lissa admits. "And I don't want to bother her. She's just really unapproachable you know?"
Sully rolls her eyes. "What she has is called confidence. You might want to learn it. Besides, from what I'm aware she doesn't really do much most of the time. She spends a lot of time just wandering around the city getting into trouble. Heck, that's the reason Kellam is her dedicated babysitter."
"Wait, really?" Lissa blinks. "I thought he was her bodyguard."
"Same thing." Sully shrugs. "He keeps her out of trouble. It was Chrom's request. He was worried she would offend the wrong noble and cause a huge issue." Sully sneers a bit. "I bet Kel enjoys that. Rob's a bit shameless with flaunting herself."
"Sully!" Lissa scolds.
"Oh come off it. You know I'm right."
"Well yes." Lissa admits. "But still…"
"Look, point is if you want to maybe learn shadow magic just fucking ask. Rob's a bit of a nut, she'd probably be happy to have a chance to ramble."
Kellam watches all of this in silence, unnoticed by the rest of the room. He agrees with Lissa and Ricken, Robin intimidates him. She's got so many positive qualities he doesn't have. She's confident, powerful, attractive (he does not stare thank you very much Sully, he takes his bodyguard duties seriously)... and maybe a bit scary. He can't imagine actually trying to hold a conversation with her. Between his own meekness and her usual topic of 'living shadows' or whatever it is, he worries he'd end up contributing nothing and just get in the way.
"Knight!" Robin's voice suddenly rings through the barracks. "We must be off! I have a mission today!"
"Right!" He calls back, startling everyone else in the room who didn't realize he was there. "Coming!"
###
Robin doesn't get it. She's done everything she can think of, but no one is noticing her. Even the silent knight does not respond to her shows of competence anymore beyond small nods. She's even made a point of showing off to him specifically, giving him her grandest speeches and most dramatic poses… and nothing. If anything, he seems to pay less attention the more grand she attempts to be.
"Am I losing my touch?" Robin considers. She's in her room at the moment, staring critically down at herself. "Maybe everyone is expecting more from me? Do I need to add magic to my poses? A bit of extra flare?"
She tries a few poses while adding bursts of shadow magic. That might work…
"Or maybe my outfit isn't suitably impressive? Does it need more ribbons? More flowing fabric? Or maybe I need to show more skin? I suppose I could cut material down the back to match the front… hmm…"
Robin is loath to modify her outfit though. It was not cheap to get made, and the enchantments that keep it from getting in her way and give her protection while wearing it would have to be removed and reapplied if she wants to edit the design. Too costly, much too costly. She doesn't know if anyone in Ylisse would be willing to help her anyways.
"And besides, more skin might mean more unwanted attention." Robin reminds herself. "Sumia warned you about that."
It's a shame really. Robin wouldn't mind showing off more of herself, she has utter confidence in her appearance, but alas the world (and Ylisse in particular) is a prudish place.
"Magic it is then. Gotta add some flare…"
###
If Kellam thought Robin was mildly intimidating before, she's become even more so over the last month. Her shows of power are increasingly incredible, and her ramblings even more nonsensical than before. She also seems to be directing a large portion of her dramatic persona at him for a reason he can't fathom, and Kellam has found himself more unable to respond as anything he could possibly say feels insufficient.
It doesn't help that Robin's shows of power have become more frequent, and he really feels like he should be saying something but can't think of anything besides a generic "good job" or "that was cool" so most of the time he says nothing and nods at her.
He wonders if she even notices. It's not like anyone else notices him.
"-but they underestimated the all-seeing shadows! The darkness sees all the evil committed in its presence and remembers it to exact vengeance when called upon to smite those evils later!" Robin continues to say. She's been on this ramble for nearly five minutes, and Kellam started to get lost within the first thirty seconds.
Thankfully they're in the barracks, where the only people who can hear her are other Shepherds who are well used to her oddities.
"Knight!" Robin barks suddenly, and turns to face him. Her voice and posture are as confident as always, but the words she speaks are contradictory to that. "What am I doing wrong?"
"Er, what?" Kellam blinks. "Pardon?"
"What am I doing wrong, Knight?" Robin repeats. "I must be doing something wrong, yes? I fight, and speak, and strut, and yet I am insufficient. All my attempts to make myself be seen seem to fail. I darken the sky, and bring my shadows to bear on our foes! Yet, I get no more than a nod from yourself, and indifference from the others. Are my efforts for naught? Am I not as useful as I think I am? My shadows are grand, perhaps, but are they not as effective as I thought them to be? I would know your thoughts, as you have been a constant companion and are therefore most likely to understand the issue."
Kellam is utterly confused, and so he speaks honestly "I don't know what you're talking about. Everyone is really impressed by you from what I know. Lissa and Ricken talk about your cool shadow magic all the time, and I'm pretty sure the reason Chrom agrees to send just you and me at dozens of Risen is because he has faith in your ability to take them all out."
"What?" Robin asks. Her eyes go wide and her voice has lost its confident tone. "But I have never heard a word of this!"
"Well, uh, Lissa and Ricken in particular find you rather… intimidating." He's hesitant to add that he too finds her intimidating. "And everyone else is a bit put off by your utter self-confidence."
"What!?" Robin's voice is even louder. "You mean they're impressed with me?!"
"Yes." Kellam says hesitantly. "Very."
Robin's smile is so wide he's worried it's going to hurt her face. "I see. I have succeeded beyond my wildest expectations!" Her smile falters a moment later, and her brow furrows. "Though if everyone is too intimidated to speak with me. Hmm…"
A thought occurs to Kellam. He just needs to find a way to phrase it. "Robin… why are you so concerned with people being impressed with you?"
"Because then my worth is assured!" Robin says. Her normal confidence returns for a moment, and she stands tall with her hands on her hips. "I know then a master of shadows is respected in such company! If my worth is not assured… well then I would have to be wary, would I not? If my worth cannot be seen, or I am insufficient, I know to look elsewhere for my future or improve myself."
Right, so she was concerned about her future. "Is this because of your amnesia? You worry you'll be cast aside."
"That is a much more worrying way to phrase it, but… yes." Robin affirms. "I have no family to call upon, nor other contacts to aid me. My worth being assured is imperative for my future!"
"I don't think the Shepherds would abandon you even if you weren't useful in combat." Kellam says.
"One would hope. I have no doubt Chrom and the others would have the best intentions, but were I not a skilled fighter I have no doubt I would have been passed on to someone else to deal with, or else given some money and left to my own devices to eke out a living." Robin says quietly. "The Shepherds are a military unit, not a refugee office."
When she puts it like that, Kellam can see the worry. "You were worried about this since you joined the Shepherds?"
"Yes. I have had my goal set since the very first day!" Robin says proudly.
"And you didn't know what anyone thought until just now?"
"Yes." Robin says with significantly less pride. "I will admit, reading others is not a skill I possess."
Another thought occurs to Kellam. "Weren't you lonely then? Not knowing what anyone thought of you?"
"Yes." Robin says again, even more quietly. "But my status is more important. Loneliness is irrelevant compared to survival."
"That sucks." That feels like an incredible understatement, but Kellam doesn't have anything else he can think to say. "If it's any reassurance, I wouldn't mind talking with you. I don't think I'll have much of interest to contribute, but-"
"Yes!" Robin interrupts with surprising enthusiasm. "I will gladly take your company!" She makes a grand sweeping gesture with her arm, motioning out to the world. "The shadow master and the silent knight shall show the world the true power of… uh… darkness and metal!"
"I was thinking something more along the lines of sharing lunch." Kellam says sheepishly.
"Even better!" Robin grins. "Let us go!"
This Robin was fun. A dash of showmanship, a teaspoon of chunibyo, and a healthy dose of insecurity makes for a surprisingly fun character. Due to her insecurity and determination to be "seen" in a metaphorical sense, Kellam made for the perfect character to feature alongside her.
Ken Wise: Validar is a surprisingly patient man, judging by the game. The other epilogue chapter will be chapter 101.
Takedo: He's a smart one for sure.
I left that importance open to interpretation. Take it as you wish.
Guest: I don't really think too hard about the mechanics of how Robin knows the songs he sings. It's one of the few nonsensical things I allow myself in these stories.
Raj8: Phila tried to do intimidation and it didn't work, so Chrom's softer and more empathy-based approach was the next try. Emmeryn is just so dang good as a character. She's so useful.
As far as I'm aware, my opinion on Character Development is not widely shared. It probably has to do with the fact that I don't mind one-note characters so long as their singular trait is fun. If a character's one trait is being good at chess, that's probably boring. If their one trait is gynophobia, well you can get a lot of mileage out of that!
Avatar gender has never bothered me, but I understand the feeling. Sometimes certain things just don't work for you. For me it would be something like… say… F!Morgan, or Tharja, or Nah. If those characters aren't handled in very specific ways it can completely put me off a story, especially if they are important characters. Frederick is a rather touchy one for me as well.
Shipping is a tough one for me. Again, with Fire Emblem specifically I'm very tolerant when it comes to ships. I have a more difficult time with certain ships (like Robin/Lucina or anything involving Frederick), but most of the time when I drop a story it's out of indifference as the plot and/or romance fails to keep my interest and not out of some innate dislike of the pairing. Anything well written enough, even if it's a ship I'm not usually partial to, usually has a chance with me. The only exception would be male/male and girl/girl pairings as those just aren't for me. I have nothing against them, I'm just not the target there.
Gloves come off when I deal with other fandoms though. I have specific tastes, and nothing else will satisfy!
bauers374: No idea what that is, but make all the jokes you want!
Firehedgehog: :D
B1ackAshes: Well sure, a lot of things could make for an interesting addition. I generally ignore prompts, however. As I've mentioned before, I take suggestions, not requests, and I will interpret and use ideas however I want. No offense to the people asking, it's just more fun for me this way, and my enjoyment of a series is the only reason it keeps getting made.
Random Reader: The past few ones have been a bit odd, I'll admit. POW was much more standard.
Darkness is complete: Fairy Robin has already been done. This is the second or third time people have re-asked for Fairy Robin specifically. I wonder what it is about that chapter specifically that makes it so forgettable.
Lord Table: Yeah, pretty much.
Lobotimite: Yes, the new Fiddlesticks was the inspiration. I'd been struggling to write a Puppet Robin forever, and had been trying to take inspiration more from The Fool and The Hollow mods for Darkest Dungeon when writing it before. Fiddlesticks gave me a new perspective on the idea.
I liked the Sion and Shen updates myself, even if I don't play those champions.
ARSLOTHES: Never got past the first episode of Soul Eater because all the characters grated on my nerves. Living Weapon is on the list though.
