Life was dull. I had everything I needed, but it was all so mundane and boring. Everyone was content to do the same thing over and over: work, home, work, home, and that was it. I craved excitement and adventure—something to shatter this seemingly mundane routine and break the monotony of life. It just couldn't go on like this. I needed something more.

As I was lost in thought, my boss interrupted me with a shout. "Cameron, have you got a moment?" I placed the glass I was cleaning down and made my way over to him, an elderly, short man who was remarkably fit for his age. He wore an old suit, the type that has patches on the elbows and a flatcap that never seems to be off his head, yet despite his weathered appearance, his blue eyes still appeared to sparkle with wisdom and kindness.
"Yeah, Jack, what's up?" I asked; the man had been like a grandfather to me since my dad had passed away when I was only 13. I was forever grateful for him taking me under his wing during such a difficult time in my life and, hell, even giving me a job.

"I need to head out tonight; I'm meeting some friends. Could you lock up the bar for me?" Jack requested. I grinned at him,

"My, my, meeting friends this late at night? Who knew you still had it in you?" I said teasingly, and Jack looked back at me, raising one eyebrow as he rolled his eyes at me before smirking.
"Well, one of us has to be good with the ladies, and it sure as shit ain't you, boy." Jack's quick retort hit the spot with my subpar record with the opposite sex, making me growl in annoyance.
"Hey, I'm not that bad." I grumbled, trying to hit back with a retort of my own, even though I knew it was a lost cause. "Yeah, I'll lock up. Don't bust a hip, old man."

Laughing and pausing at the door, Jack turns to me, ready to say one final thing before leaving. "And Cameron, go straight home tonight, yeah? There have been a few disappearances recently. Stick to the main roads; don't go wandering off." Jack's expression is serious, and I can feel my heart skip a beat at his tone. "Yeah, no problem. Don't worry about me; I'll be fine. You take care of yourself, alright?" I reply, and with a nod, Jack leaves the door clicking behind him.

I locked up the bar, making sure everything was neat and orderly as I did so. The streets were quiet and deserted as I made my way home, and the only sounds that could be heard were the occasional nightbirds chirping and the soft breeze blowing through the trees. I knew there was a shortcut through the woods that cut the walk home down to about 15 minutes instead of the full 30. It was familiar to me, and I'd used it many times before without any incident. Jack had asked me to stick to the main streets due to the recent disappearances, and I knew it would be safer, but I was also tired and just wanted to get home.

I began making my way through the woods, feeling strangely uneasy. The darkness was thick, and I could almost swear there were things moving in the shadows. But I shook it off, convincing myself that it was nothing more than my imagination playing tricks on me. I had used this path before without any problems, and I figured the worst thing that could happen would be me coming across a wild animal, but since I live in the UK, I am not exactly scared of a rabid squirrel attack.

"We had a deal, devil!" cried a desperate and agitated voice.
"Yes, and the deal is now over," another more feminine and sinister voice replied.

Hearing the voices, I stopped dead in my tracks. I couldn't quite make out what they were saying, but it was clear that there was a confrontation of some kind going on.
I moved towards the voices, my curiosity overcoming any sense of concern. In the open moonlight stood a young teen boy holding a glowing staff, dressed in an odd outfit of a cloak and pointed hat. He appeared nervous and uneasy, talking urgently to another individual concealed in the shadows of the trees.

"But what now?" he asked, his voice shaking with panic and irritation. "You promised me more power...
"What the hell have I come across?" I whispered to myself. "Is this a goddamn cosplay session at this time?" watching from the cover of the forest around me.
"But what now?" the scared guy frantically pleads. "You promised me more power. I brought you people to consume as requested and led them to their deaths at your command under the agreement you would increase my power, but now the guild is active and narrowing down on their search, and I haven't gotten stronger at all. You have to help!"

My eyes widen at the guy's claim: "Is this who's responsible for the disappearances around town?!" This was starting to become more than just an argument in the woods. Fearing that the situation was more dangerous than it appeared, I wanted to get out of there. But just as I was about to take my first few steps, the reply from the other stranger stopped me in my tracks.

"I HAVE TO HELP." There was a cold, sharp edge to the feminine voice's words, a venomous tone that cut through like a knife. "You insolent little welp!"
The feminine figure's voice grew even more vicious as she berated the trembling young man. "If it weren't for your blunders and incompetence, I wouldn't have hunters sniffing around my nesting grounds. Now, because of you, I have to leave... But don't worry; I have one more use for you." The young mage took a few hesitant steps backward as he brandished his staff, fear plain on his features. From the shadows emerged a sinister figure, a woman with long, elegant limbs and sharp facial features. Her hair was silver, flowing down her back, while her face was twisted into a rage-filled expression, her fangs glistening in the moonlight. However, instead of a human lower torso, the woman had the body of a mass of tangled spider legs, each one sharp and pointed.

"Oh shit!" I let out an involuntary sound as I fearfully backpedaled, tripping over the roots of a tree. My heart hammered away in my chest as my mind attempted to process the situation. A flood of adrenaline and emotions surged through my body, leaving me stunned and unable to move. I looked up at the figure before me, my eyes widening in shock. 'Holy crap, what the fuck is that thing?!'

"What was that?" Her eyes meet mine and widen momentarily. "You blundering fool, theres someone here; ill get rid of you first, then Ill deal with the intruder!" The spiderwoman roared at the man charging him. The man quickly raises his glowing staff and pointing it at the it at the incoming monster. A torrent of flames shoots out from the staff hitting the monster and enveloping her in an inferno, the forest lit up in the blazing light. It seemed that the flames had completely engulfed her, until one of her legs came slamming through the flames and landed right on top of the man. The man's scream filled the air as the giant spiderwoman's leg pierced him through the body, his body limp and motionless as she withdrew her leg with a sickening squelch, leaving his lifeless form sprawling on the forest floor.

""FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!" Seeing the man be split in half jolted the fight-or-flight response within me, and I was definitely not staying here to fight. So, I booked it down the path as quickly as my legs would carry me, not looking back once and praying to get far enough away from the scene before she turns her attention on me.

"GET BACK HERE, HUMAN!" I heard her voice grow louder as she got closer to me, and I felt my fear grow by the second. My legs were pumping as fast as I could, my heart was thundering inside my chest, and my breath was coming in quick gasps. I took one quick glance behind me, already regretting that decision. The spider lady was getting way too close for comfort, rapidly covering the path behind me with her many long legs.

To my horror, I felt something slap against my back before I had a chance to take another step forward. Sticky strands wrapped themselves around my body and yanked me backwards, sending me flying through the air and onto the ground. The impact caused my head to spin and my body to tumble across the hard forest floor. The shock of the sudden fall quickly turned into terror as I found myself face-to-face with the monster, my hands and feet firmly ensnared by the thick, sticky webbing. As she looked me up and down, its face was twisted into a grotesque smile. "Hmm… almost human almost, I must say, your fear at the moment is... euphoric." Moaning in sadistic pleasure, she glanced at me again. "Hmm, you're not too bad-looking. Maybe I'll have a use for you before devouring you."

I could feel the fear and adrenaline coursing through my body as I stared into the spiderwoman's malicious eyes. My breath was still coming in quick gasps, and my heart was still pounding in my chest. "Perhaps I'll even keep you alive while I slowly drain you of your life force. How does that sound?" It's twisted smile grew even wider as it spoke, the malice in its voice clear for me to hear.

"Listen, how about we talk about this? Yeah, you don't need to do anything, rash; I didn't see anything!" attempting to plead, finally managing to pull my hand free from its bindings. retelling and clenching the tiny pub keys in my hand, I rammed them into one of the monster's eyes. As the spiderwoman screeched in agony, I used the few precious moments of opportunity to free myself from the bindings. After undoing the last knot on my feet, I quickly turned to run before once again getting blown off my feet by her backhand.

"YOU InSuFFerAbLe LITtLe SHit!" The lady screeched at me, a terrifying combination of primal anger and pain in her voice. "Ill FLAy YOU aLiVe!" Rolling onto my back, I wheezed and coughed from the powerful blow to the back of my head. I was still grappling with the pain from the fall itself and was still trying to get my bearings when I was suddenly grabbed by the leg and pulled upward. "Hehe sorry?" I realized I should have kept my mouth shut. Before I could finish the thought, I was suddenly catapulted backwards by the spiderwoman's hand. I sailed through the air, crashing down onto the ground yet again. This time, I coughed up blood, and I felt my body wracked with pain.

"This fucking sucks," I muttered to myself as I struggled to stand up again. All I wanted was for life to not be boring. Granted, this shit is along the lines, but come on, dying? Now? How's that fair?

Anger swells in me, forcing the pain I feel down, my heart thumping in my chest as I face down at the woman charing me down.

THUMP

I don't want to die here...

THUMP THUMP

Not after finding out there is more in the world.

THUMP THUMP THUMP

"How Is that fair!? to give me hope in one hand and tear it away with the other." I panted and gasped, my heart hammering away as the woman reared up over me, legs raised to deliver the fatal blow. "It's not fair!" crying out in anger the sound be drowned out over my own heartbeat, rage burning hot inside of me.

"Just die!" she screeched, descending towards. With nothing else left, I let out an inhuman cry of anger. As if responding to the cry, a burst of glowing energy exploded from my hands, slicing through the woman's legs and into her body, piercing through her with bright multi-coloured light. The spider woman screamed in an inhuman roar of pain as she was sliced through by the glowing energy. Her body was racked with agony as it was pierced by the light, and she began to writhe and contort violently, her screams of pain ringing out across the landscape before fallign deathly silent. Exhaustion finally hit, my eyes closing as I fell back, being caught by something as my vision faded. The last thing I saw was someone holding me. "You did well, kid."
