Episode 32: Saved from Scrap, Original Airdate: October 1st 1986
It was a sunny afternoon on the Island of Sodor. Over in Wellsworth, Thomas and his daughter Lucy were attending the church fête. Earlier that week, Edward had asked Thomas whether he and Lucy would like to attend, an offer which Thomas gladly accepted.
Right now, Thomas, Lucy and Edward were walking around the vicarage orchard, seeing all that the fête had to offer. There were all the traditional church fête activities, which included a coconut shy, bowling for a pig and a bat a rat stall. Thomas then took Lucy over to the coconut shy where the prize was a large teddy bear, seeing how much Lucy wanted it, Thomas decided to try his luck. Fortunately, he was able to knock all the coconuts off and he won the teddy as he then handed it to Lucy.
"Thanks daddy" said Lucy happily.
"You're welcome, Lucy sweetie" replied Thomas to his happy daughter.
"Hey Thomas Billinton, over here" came a familiar voice.
Thomas, Lucy, and Edward looked to see where the voice who'd called Thomas' name came from. Sure enough, they saw Reverends Awdry and Boston coming over to them with Charles Laxey, the Vicar of Wellsworth and a good friend to Edward.
"Reverend Awdry, Reverend Boston" said Thomas in surprise, "what are you two doing here?".
"Charles asked us to come out and help him with the fête" explained Reverend Awdry.
"Besides" said Reverend Boston, "Trevor's here with his traction engine".
As on que, the group heard a loud whistle. Sure, enough a dark green William Foster & Co. DCC Traction Engine pulling a wooden cart came cuffing into view. Its driver was Trevor Cole, a young man in his mid-twenties was giving a ride to the children attending the fête.
"Alright boys and girls" said Trevor as he stopped his traction engine, "the ride is over please disembark from the cart".
"Thanks for the ride, Trevor" thanked a little boy.
"It was fun" replied a little girl.
"I'm glad you liked it" smiled Trevor.
As the boys and girls were taken away by their parents, Trevor patted his traction engine on its side.
"You did well today old girl" Trevor said to it.
"Trevor" called a voice.
Trevor turned to see his good friend Edward coming towards him. Accompanying Edward was Thomas, Lucy, Reverends Awdry, Boston and Laxey.
"Edward, Thomas, Lucy, Reverends" greeted Trevor, "fancy seeing you lot other than Reverend Laxey here".
"Edward asked if me and Lucy would like to come," said Thomas.
"Well you two certainly picked the right day to come" replied Trevor with a smile.
Lucy looked at Trevor's traction engine, although she had seen her father's E2 tank several times before. She had never seen a steam engine that never ran on rails.
"I see little Lucy is amazed at my traction engine" smiled Trevor.
"Tracks?" asked Lucy.
"No Lucy sweetie this is a traction engine, it doesn't run on rails" explained Thomas.
"After lunch would you like a ride on it little Lucy?" asked Trevor.
"Ride" clapped Lucy excitedly.
"On the subject of lunch" said Reverend Laxey, "there's a nice little burger and chip van over by the church".
"Well please lead the way Reverend," said Thomas.
Smiling, Reverend Laxey then lead Thomas, Lucy, Edward, Trevor, Reverend Awdry and Reverend Boston to where the burger and chip van was. Soon the seven of them were sitting at some picnic tables with a burger and chips each.
"You know Edward" said Trevor as he swallowed a bite of his burger, "it seems like only yesterday that you helped save my traction engine from Crocks Scrap Yard".
"It sure does Trevor" smiled Edward.
"I remember you telling me the story" added Thomas.
"Story?" asked Lucy excitedly.
"Looks the mentioning of a story has gotten little Lucy excited" smiled Reverend Awdry.
Smiling at Reverend Awdry's words, Thomas then looked at his young daughter.
"You ready for a story Lucy?" asked Thomas.
"Story, story" said Lucy excitedly.
"You know Reverend Awdry has told me of your stories young Thomas" said Reverend Laxey, "he said that they're some of the best he's ever heard".
"And today you have the honour of hearing one of them Charles" replied Reverend Boston before he turned to Thomas, "please take it away Thomas".
"Right then" said Thomas as he began his story, "this began when Edward was picking up some scrap from Crock's Scrap Yard".
(Story Begins)
Sir Topham Hatt works his employees on the North Western Railway. But they don't mind it at all, they do like to be kept busy and they're always proud when he praises them for their hard work and calls them really useful.
One day Edward was at Tidmouth sheds. He was heading the Crocks Scrap Yard on his branch line to pick up a load of scrap.
"Me and my engine are going to the scrap yard today" Edward called to Thomas, Lady, and Burnett as he passed them by.
"What already" said Thomas cheekily, "your engines not that old".
"Oh I don't know" Thomas replied Lady cheekily, "Edward's K2 was built in 1896 and I think that its time she was retired".
Edward smiled at Thomas and Lady, he knew that they were both only teasing him. As Edward's K2 headed into the distance, Thomas noticed that Lady wasn't looking her usual cheery self.
"Lady are you okay?" asked Thomas in concern.
"I'm fine Thomas" Lady assured her boyfriend, "just still feeling a little bit poorly".
"You're not going to have to go into hospital are you?" asked Thomas worriedly.
"Don't worry Thomas" assured Burnett, "Lady's medicine is just taking its time".
Thomas felt a bit at this point.
"Well I'm going to go back to work" said Thomas as he hopped back into his E2's cab
As Thomas' E2 puffed out of the yard, Burnett turned to look at Lady. Lady noticed that Burnett had a stern expression on his face, she knew what he was going to ask her.
"Lady" said Burnett.
"I'm sorry Burnett" said Lady, "I still haven't told him yet".
"Lady" said Burnett, "you can't keep it hidden forever. Thomas needs to know".
"I just" said Lady as tears began to form in her eyes, "I'm just worried if I tell him, he'll panic and leave me like so many other boys have done to their girlfriends".
Burnett gave Lady a sympathetic look. He couldn't blame her for her worries, it was only natural after all.
"Lady" Burnett began as he gently took her hands in his, "I know that you are worried about Thomas leaving you. But you also know how much he loves you, so much so that he will stay with the two of you".
Lady looked at her beloved guardian's caring eyes. She knew that he was right, Thomas did love her with all his heart, what if he did stay with her. She knew that she couldn't hide it any longer, she decided to tell him later that evening.
Meanwhile Edward had picked up 4 Lynton and Barnstaple Railway trucks and brought them over to Cronk's Scrap Yard. Cronk's Scrap Yard was filled with rusty old cars, trucks, and other machinery. This were broken up into pieces by the staff and were loaded into Edward's trucks, Edward would then take them to the Sodor Ironworks located South of the town of Killdane where they are melted down and used again.
Today however there was something different at Cronk's Scrap Yard. As Edward hopped out of his cab onto the small halt, he noticed a young man sadly petting a traction engine. Edward had never seen the young man before and decided to introduce himself.
"Good day" Edward greeted the young man.
"Oh" said the young as he jumped in fright.
"Sorry I didn't mean to frighten you" said Edward.
"That's okay" said the young man.
"I'm Edward" Edward introduced himself politely, "what's your name?".
"I'm Trevor" said the young man as he shook Edward's hand, "Trevor Cole. I believe you know my uncle Jem".
"That I do" replied Edward with a smile, "and it's nice to meet you too Trevor".
"Likewise, Edward" smiled Trevor.
"So why are you here Trevor?" asked Edward.
Trevor's expression then become solemn. He then turned towards the traction engine he had been rubbing when Edward came up to him.
"Just saying goodbye to my traction engine" Trevor said sadly.
"That traction engine is yours" asked Edward as Trevor nodded, "it's not broken or rusty why is it here?".
"My late boss's daughter sent here" said Trevor, "they're going to break her up next week".
"That's a shame," said Edward.
"It sure is, ever since my boss died and his daughter took over, she has been wanting to get rid of the traction engine," said Trevor, "if it where up to me I'd buy her and bring her home. Unfortunately, I don't have the money to buy her or the space to keep her".
"Why did your boss's daughter get rid of?" asked Edward.
"She says that its too old fashioned and not worth repairing" said Trevor, "which isn't true of course. All she needs is some paint, brasso and oil to be as good as new".
"My K2 tender engine is old fashioned herself and is still really useful," said Edward.
"I'm glad you think so," said Trevor.
"May I ask what kind of work did you do Trevor?" asked Edward.
Trevor then thought of the work that he and his traction engine both used to do.
"My boss would send me and my traction engine from to farm" said Trevor, "I'd thresh corn, haul logs and lots of other work. Of course, there'd always be lots of children".
Trevor then closed his eyes, remembering the happy days that he and his traction engine shared, including giving rides to the children.
"Oh yes I love children," said Trevor.
Edward and Trevor then said their goodbyes to each other, Edward then hopped back into his K2's cab and headed off for Wellsworth. On the way there he thought of how he could help Trevor save his beloved traction engine. He thought of all his friends who liked engines, but strangely none of them would have room for a traction engine at home.
"It's a shame" said Edward to himself.
He was still deep in thought as he reached Wellsworth. Just as he was approaching the station, he saw that on the platform was the person he believed would help save Trevor's traction engine himself.
"Of course, why didn't I think of him before" said Edward happily.
Standing on the platform was his good friend Charles Laxey, the Vicar of Wellsworth. Like Reverends Awdry and Boston, Charles was also a steam engine enthusiast. Currently Reverend Charles was standing on the platform with his two sons, Harry, and Lloyd. Edward stopped his engine at the platform and hopped off, Reverend Charles walked up to his friend and shook his hand.
"Hello there Edward" Reverend Laxey greeted kindly, "you look upset. What's the matter?".
"I just met Jem Cole's nephew Trevor" said Edward, "his traction engine is at Cronk's Scrapyard".
Edward then explained the situation involving Trevor and his traction engine, Reverend Charles listened with keen interest.
"Do buy it for him Vicar" said Edward, "surely you've got room".
"Yes Edward I got room" laughed Reverend Laxey, "but I don't need a traction engine".
"Trevor said that it'll saw wood and give children rides" said Edward, "besides you could use something like that in the vicarage orchard".
Reverend Charles gave a thought to that, having a traction engine working at the vicarage orchard wouldn't be such a bad idea. The children would surely enjoy a ride on it whenever the vicarage fête, it would also spare him having to call expensive sawing companies to cut up wood whenever autumn rolled in.
"We'll see Edward" said Reverend Laxey at last, "I'll visit the scrapyard Saturday to see it for myself".
"Oh thank you Sir" said Edward happily.
Reverend Charles smiled at Edward before turning and walking away with his two sons. It was Saturday afternoon, Trevor was at Cronk's Scrapyard with his traction engine as usual, he then saw a black car come into the scrapyard as a familiar man then got out of it.
"Uncle Jem" said Trevor in surprise.
"Hello Trevor" Jem greeted his nephew.
"What are you doing here?" Trevor asked.
"I got a call from Reverend Charles Laxey" explained Jem, "if you're lucky he might buy your traction engine".
This news made Trevor excited. His beloved traction engine might be getting a second chance at life.
"Do you think he might?" Trevor asked excitedly.
"Maybe he will once we've lit her fire and cleaned her up a bit," said Jem.
Trevor and Jem then both set to work together. They cleaned and polished Trevor's traction engine so that it shone brightly in the evening sun, they were just about done when Reverend Laxey and his two sons came to the scrapyard.
"Hello Jem" Reverend Laxey as he then shook Trevor's hand, "is it to my understanding that you're Trevor?".
"That I 'am your holiness" said Trevor politely, "are you really going to save my traction engine?".
"Why don't you give me a demonstration first?" suggested Reverend Laxey.
Trevor then hopped onto his traction engine and lit its fire, when its fire was nice and hot, he began to chuff it about the scrapyard. Trevor hadn't felt this happy for months.
"Show your paces please Trevor," said Reverend Laxey.
Trevor did just that, Reverend Laxey was so impressed that he went into the scrapyard's office. He came out five minutes later with a smile on his face.
"I've got it cheap Jem, cheap," said Reverend Laxey.
"Did you hear that, Trevor?" Jem told his nephew, "Reverend Laxey's saved your traction engine and now its going to stay at the vicarage orchard".
"This is the happiest day of my life" said Trevor happily.
Both Jem and Reverend Laxey look at Trevor's happy expression with smiles on their faces. Reverend's Laxey's two sons then came up to him.
"Daddy is it okay if Trevor brings us home on his traction engine?" asked his eldest.
"We want to see what its like?" said his youngest.
"You better take this two scallywags home Trevor" said Reverend Laxey with a smile on his face, "there's no way they'll want to ride home in the car".
Smiling Trevor then brought the two boys onto his traction engine, and they set off for home. Now Trevor's traction engine is kept in a shed at the vicarage orchard. while Trevor was invited to stay in Reverend Laxey's guesthouse for £200 a month. Trevor was happy now; he sees Edward everyday when his K2 puffed down the Wellsworth branch line. Trevor would clean his traction engine everyday until her paint was polished, and her brass shone like gold.
Trevor loves his work, but his happiest day is the church fair. With a wooden seat bolted to his traction engines bunker, he chuffers around the vicarage orchard giving rides to all the children. That night he would lie in bed, remembering the happy day he had.
"Oh yes I love children" he whispered to himself before falling happily to sleep.
(Story Ends)
"And ever since then you've been very useful Trevor" said Thomas as he finished his story.
"That was a very good story young Thomas," said Reverend Laxey as he turned towards Reverends Awdry and Boston, "you two weren't exaggerating when you said that Thomas' stories were amazing".
"As we told you Charles no one can tell a better railway story then young Thomas here" replied Reverend Awdry with a smile.
"I doubt either me or Reverend Awdry could tell a story as good as his," said Reverend Boston.
"Well why don't we all go and enjoy the rest of the fête?" suggested Edward.
"Well I for one second that" replied Thomas as he stood up with Lucy.
Thomas, Lucy, Edward, Trevor, Reverends Awdry, Boston and Laxey went back to enjoying the fête. They had a wonderful day and when it was over, Thomas bid them all goodbye and went home. As Thomas drove home, he looked at Lucy asleep in her car seat. He gave a smile remembering the day that Lady told him the wonderful news.
(March 2011)
It was the end of another busy day on the Island of Sodor. Thomas and Howard had just parked Thomas' E2 in the sheds at Ffarquhar, they both left the sheds when they saw Lady waiting outside.
"Lady" said Thomas in surprise, "what are you doing here?".
"I'm just wondering if you would like to take a walk with me?" Lady asked, "it is such a nice evening by the way".
"I would love to" said Thomas.
"I'll take you two would like to be left alone?" asked Howard with a mischievous look on his face.
"Get out of here dad" said Thomas in mock annoyance.
Grinning Howard then left and headed home. Thomas and Lady then both took a walk down by the river, the evening was beautiful. The sun was going down, coating the sky with pink and orange. Thomas however noticed that Lady wasn't looking her usual self, she had a forlorn look on her beautiful face.
"Lady what's the matter?" Thomas asked in concern.
"Why do you ask Thomas?" asked Lady.
"You look quite forlorn" said Thomas, "is something bothering you?".
"Don't worry Thomas I promise that I'm fine" Lady tried to assure Thomas.
Thomas however wasn't convinced. He knew that something was up, and it wasn't her sickness, it was something else and he was going to find out what it was.
"Lady" Thomas said gently as he turned to face her and took her hands in his before looking deep into her eyes, "I've known you since we were children and I know you too well enough to know that you aren't telling me everything. Please Lady what is the matter, please I love you and I want to help you".
Lady then gave a sigh before reaching into her pocket and pulling something out, she then handed it to Thomas as his eyes widened.
"I'm so sorry Thomas" Lady said as tears began to form in her eyes, "I know I should suggest that we use protection. I know that we're both very young and that you probably want to live your life".
Lady was cut off when Thomas scooped her up in his arms and spun her around. This wasn't the kind of reaction that she was expecting from him at all, not in the slightest.
"Lady this is the most wonderful news of my life" Thomas said happily.
"You mean were not angry and going to leave me?" Lady asked.
Thomas then set Lady gently down and looked at her deeply.
"Lady" said Thomas sincerely, "I promise that I would rather die then leave you, it will be hard considering our ages. But I know that we will both ultimately come out of this strong, I love you Lady Stone and I always will".
With that Thomas then crashed his lips against Lady's and kissed her very deeply. All the while, holding a positive pregnancy test in his hand.
And done, I must say that I'm pleased with how it turned out, especially now that Thomas knows of Lady's pregnancy. Anyway please be so kind as to leave a preview and as always, see you all next time.
