Chapter 602
Elain was trying not to watch Helion and Ashk as she stood beside Viviane. Her friend was still very much watching them, obviously with much amusement, and Elain almost sighed in relief when one of the Summer Court males approached the two of them.
"Lady Elain," he said, presenting her with a Courtly bow, "Might you flatter me with a dance?"
"Oh, yes." Elain took his offered hand and thew Viviane a smile as the male led her away through the crowd.
The music was lively, and Elain made a mental note to tell Lucien he had done a good job of selecting the performers when she saw him again. Around them, many of the fae who had finished their meals were joining them to dance. Nearby, Kalias was dancing with Nera, and Eris held a hand out to Nesta.
"I have never been to the Day Court before."
"Oh?" Elain looked up at the male who held her hand. "You are from the Summer Court, yes?"
"Yes." He gave another bow of his head, "Kahlan."
"Thank you for the offer of a dance." Elain replied, "Have you been to the other Courts?"
"I was fortunate enough to visit the Dawn Court last month." Kahlan told her, and Elain smiled.
"I quite liked the Dawn Court." She replied, "It felt very gentle and peaceful." She did not mention what had happened to Lucien and Thesan while they had been there. Those events were definitely not gentle or peaceful, but Afterall that had been the vibe she had gotten while there. If they had not decided to live in the Day Court, Elain thought she and her mate could have been happy in the Dawn Court.
"I think I prefer the Day Court." Kahlan said, "From what I have seen so far, and what has been shown to us of the City. There is much life here."
"That is certainly true."
Feyre and Rhys were dancing nearby together, and Elain wondered what Kahlan would think of the Night Court if he ever got to see it. "It is interesting here that there seems to be a lot of interaction in the Day Court between High Fae Courtiers and other kinds of Fae."
"The world is changing." Elain smiled, seeing Kera nearby watching them. A heartbeat later, Elain realised that Kera was not watching the two of them, but rather those pretty eyes were following Kahlan specifically. "Have you met Kera?" She asked, releasing her hold of the male's arm and gesturing toward the blonde faerie they were approaching.
"Not personally."
"Ah, allow me." Elain brought them to a stop and tried her hide her smile at the surprised look on Kera's face.
"Lady Elain."
"Kera, would you take care of Lord Kahlan for me." She asked, "I suspect he would enjoy continuing to dance, but I grow tired."
"Oh… Yes… Of course." Kera's eyes shifted from Elain to Kahlan and she smiled.
"Thank you." Elain passed Kera Kahlan's hand and then watched as they moved through the dancing fae together. Perhaps Kera would think that was enough payment for the information on Vassa that she had given Elain. The admiration in the blonde's eyes as she had watched the Summer Court male had been easy enough to read.
Turning then to go and get herself a drink, Elain almost stumbled to a stop when a flash of red caught her attention. Across the room she spotted Vassa, pale green dress draped everywhere across her lithe body, red hair being tossed around exaggeratedly, as she danced with Lucien. Elain promptly forgot all about the drink she wanted, and she changed direction, heading for her mate. She was sure she probably elbowed several fae out of her way as she made her way across the dancefloor, but she didn't so much as stop to check as she strode purposefully. She did not stop until she was within arm's reach of her mate.
"Lucien." She said, raising an eyebrow when her mate turned his eyes on her. Something was going on, she knew, seeing the odd look in that russet eye.
"Could you not have waited for the song to be over?" Vassa asked, looking thoroughly put out. "We were doing so well."
Elain glanced at the mortal woman, but did not respond to her. "Lucien," She said again, reaching a hand out to his arm. He blinked when she touched him, looking at her hand and then her face. "We need to speak with your father." She said, gripping his arm and tugging him away from Vassa. "He's over here."
