A small seaside town in Tuscany, Italy 60 years ago
Alma Acardi stood along the shoreline looking out into the waters of the Mediterranean she watched as the waves came up against the shore and then went back out. She watched and watched hoping that if she stared long enough Silvio would appear out of those waves, but he never did.
Falling to her knees Alma wept into her hands, it had been a week since she had learned her husband Silvio had died at sea. Silvio was a fisherman just like most of the men in their town, he used to work on her father's boat that was how they met, and after they married her father gave the boat to him, he was so happy, he loved going out on the ocean he told her he felt free and alive he loved the smell of the salt and the movement of his boat. Alma loved Silvio while he may have looked gruff and mean, Silvio was a very kind and sweet man who cared deeply for her, he was always willing to listen to her and comfort her when she was at her lowest. Remembering Silvio's kindness and compassion made Alma break down into tears once again she looked out into the sea as tears fell from her face and into the sand.
I would give anything to have him back, Alma thought to herself as she continued to cry.
"Buona sera mio caro," a strange voice said, Alma fell back startled, looking up she saw a man standing before her.
This man was tall with straight black hair tied back into a ponytail, he wore a very nice suit, far nicer than anyone in her village, hell this region of Tuscany could afford. His skin was pale nearly translucent, and on his face was a very wide unnerving smile. His most prominent feature however was his eyes, which were a bright crimson the same color as blood.
"Who, who are you?" she asked never seen this man before and if she was, to be honest, something about him was off.
"You may call me Mr. Faust my dear, I was just out on an evening stroll when I heard you crying what's wrong?" he asked kneeling to be at eye level with Alma. Alma began explaining what had happened despite her weird feeling about this guy.
"My… my husband Silvio died, he was out fishing, there was a storm, and his ship was sunk, and… and he," Alma broke down into tears once more, she still couldn't believe he was gone, she felt like someone had just ripped out her heart. She stopped when she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"Now don't cry my dear," Mr. Faust said his voice filled with sympathy.
"I'm sorry it's just, I miss him I wish there was some way to get him back," she said as she buried her face back into her hands.
"What if you could," Alma looked at the man who had now stood up and was looking down at her.
"What do you mean?" she asked confused, Mr. Faust smiled.
"Well, my dear despite appearances I'm no normal man I represent a certain individual, an individual with the ability to help bring your husband back," he said his smile growing wider. Alma looked at him with disbelief, this man was claiming to bring back her husband from the dead.
That's impossible… unless the realization hit her like a ton of bricks, she felt cold her face going pale.
"Your... you're a demon aren't you!" she shouted; Mr. Faust just laughed.
"Guilty as charged," he said never once dropping his smile. Alma got to her feet and ran, only to bump into him as he suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
"Now don't run off my dear don't you want to see your husband again?" he asked grabbing her arm so she couldn't flee.
"Not like this," she said trying to break free, but his grip was like steel.
"Ohh but I thought you said you'd give anything to have him back? Don't you want to see your beloved Silvio again? Don't you want to be held in his arms, don't you want to feel his kiss again? All I ask is that you listen to my proposal, what do you say my dear?" he said in a smooth confident tone, Alma stopped struggling, looking him in the eye she asked.
"Alright what do you want from me, my eternal soul right?" Alma had heard stories she knew how deals with demons worked.
"Oh no, no, or at least not yet anyway, no what I want from you is a little different," he said letting go of her arm, Alma looked at him curiously.
"What do you want then," she asked rubbing where he grabbed her.
"You see my master is a busy man and overseeing all of his manipulations is a time-consuming task that takes a while so what he does is he recruits mortals like you and empowers them to help him with these tasks, and he assigns me to recruit them," he said proudly, Alma looked at him shocked.
"So, wait you want me to become a witch and do the devil's bidding?" she asked surprised.
"Pretty much yeah, but hey do a good job following his will and we'll bring your husband back, deal?" he asked holding out his hand which glowed an ominous red.
Alma stared at the hand, was she gonna do this was she really going to sell her soul to this demon, this monster, become his servant and enforcer? She had heard all the stories, and she remembered what the priests said about making deals with demons, was she gonna sell her soul just to see her husband again? Alma was about to refuse his offer when memories of Silvio came into her mind, such happy warm moments, the happiest of her life, and now those times were gone, she would never see Silvio's beautiful face ever again, nor feel the warmth of his strong arms pulling her in close.
"Deal!" she shouted grabbing his hand there was a bright flash and she felt a strong burning sensation in her hand.
"Excellent!" Faust shouted letting go of her hand, Alma looked down and saw a strange seal was now burned into her palm.
"Now some of my associates will be in touch with you to begin your service so stay focused and remember only through satisfactory work will you ever see your husband again," he said sternly never dropping his smile, Alma nodded in understanding. Getting up Alma headed back home only to be stopped by Faust.
"Ohh and one more thing my dear do you have a coin I can borrow?" confused by this random question Alma reached into her pocket and pulled out a 500-piece Lira. tossing it to him Mr. Faust took the coin in the palm of his left hand and closed his fist, there was a red glow then he opened his hand to reveal the coin. The coin no longer resembled a Lira as now it was black as charcoal with an ominous red pentagram on it.
"I return this to you later," he said before walking away, leaving Alma alone on the beach staring out into the dark waters.
Modern-day a small church in the Tuscan countryside
"And that is how I became a witch, for decades I served the forces of evil, I cast curses on innocent people, I used spells of lust to get married men and women to commit adultery, I've killed many sacrificing their souls to Lucifer and his lieutenants," Alma said, sitting in a plush chair in front of a burning fireplace.
The years had not been kind to the woman her once vibrant black hair was now gray with some streaks of white mixed in. where her skin was smooth and soft now it was saggy and wrinkled hanging off her body like an oversized shirt. Alma began coughing violently, leaning down she covered her mouth with a handkerchief, once her fit had passed, she sat up looking down at the handkerchief she saw flecks of blood. She did not have long that was why she was here and talking to a priest who sat right across from her looking concerned.
Alma studied the man closely, he was a good-looking young man, with a head of black hair that he kept short on the sides and combed back on top. He had a swarthy skin tone a fellow Italian like herself, and his eyes were rich brown. He didn't look a day over 21 which Alma felt was strange as she assumed the Vatican would have sent someone more experienced to help her. He had a compassionate look on his face that never faltered even as she explained all the terrible things she had done over the years. Standing behind him was a nun who appeared to be his age, she had Germanic features, fair skin, and bright blue eyes, and if Alma had to guess she probably had a head of blonde hair under that abbot. The priest stood up giving Alma a clear view of his outfit, he wore the long flowing black robe typical among priests the robe had red piping, and around his waist was a red sash that shined in the light of the fire. Walking up to her he knelt and placed a hand on hers.
"Are you alright signora?" he asked his voice filled with sympathy and worry, much to Alma's surprise.
"No I'm not that's why I'm here I want to atone for the wicked deeds I want to repent my dark deal and travel to the heavenly kingdom where my husband resides, that's why I need your help," she explained coughing again, the priest gave her hand a tight squeeze.
"Don't worry I will help you; I will guide you to the path of redemption I will help you repent your dark and evil deeps and finally find peace in the arms of our lord," he explained crossing himself.
Alma couldn't believe it, she fully expected this young man to throw her out of the church, to deem her a vile irredeemable witch and say that she deserves eternal damnation, wouldn't be the first time a priest had said that to her. But this one he was different despite the horrible things she's done he genuinely wanted to help her to save her soul. Alma didn't know what to feel, she felt tears welling up in her eyes.
"Grazie, Mille Grazie," she said wiping her eyes.
"It's no problem, ma'am but I do have one question, did this demon ever hold up his end of the deal?" the priest asked curiously.
"He did but… I don't want to talk about it," Alma said with a shudder.
"My apologies, but do not fret for the ritual to save your soul will begin tomorrow, you will see your husband in the heavenly kingdom I promise," the priest said standing up with a look of determination on his face.
IMP office, Pride Ring, Hell
A new client was supposed to show up today to give them a new target, supposedly this client was supposedly a big deal in Hell's upper crust, which was good because it meant Blitz could gouge him for more than his other poorer clients. But while they waited for this guy to show up, the IMP crew was gonna use this time to relax. Blitz was chilling in his office, and M&M was hanging by the coffee maker talking about whatever married couples talked about, Loona and Dante were sitting on the couch Loona had her arms wrapped around Dante holding him close and nuzzling him. Millie looked other and saw her two younger coworkers cuddling, a warm smile stretched across her face at the sight.
Aww, those two are just so cute together, Millie thought to herself, while she might have been happy with the situation Dante didn't feel the same way. Loona had been holding him in that position for the last 20 minutes, it was nice at first but now it was just annoying but every time he tried to break free, she'd pull him back in tighter.
Dammit, she's getting so clingy! Dante thought to himself angrily, ever since he told her he loved her she wouldn't leave him alone. She was always hugging or trying to cuddle with him, she was constantly holding his hand, and Dante was beginning to feel a little smothered.
Suddenly the lights began to flicker, and the temperature of the room dropped by several degrees allowing them to see their breaths. Loona's fur stood on end, and she began to let out a soft whine, which Dante had come to know meant she was scared. Suddenly there was a knock at the door, Dante tried to get up to get it, but Loona pulled him back, he could feel her shaking. Moving hesitantly towards the door Moxxie opened it and looked up at the figure standing before him.
He was a tall figure maybe about six feet tall, he had gray skin and black hair which he kept neatly trimmed. He wore an expensive tailored suit that fit his body perfectly, the suit was the color of dried blood. Moxxie looked up to see the man's face and saw him looking down with red eyes and a broad smile on his face.
"Hello there, may I come in?" he asked his voice taking on an aura of politeness, though underneath there was a tone that subtly implied that if they didn't he'd make them sorry.
Standing aside Moxxie let the man in, the client strode through the office surveying his surroundings, his eyes fell upon Millie who stood frozen in fear, trembling as if she was standing in the middle of a walk-in freezer, which if she was, to be honest, is what the office currently felt like. The mysterious client's eyes then fell on Loona and Dante sitting on the couch, Loona let out a high pitch yip and tightened her grip on Dante who could feel her elevated heart rate. While Loona was terrified of him Dante wasn't scared, wary yes but not scared.
He looks like a knockoff Lucifer, he thought to himself making eye contact with the stranger. The client's eyes lingered on them for a moment before he cleared his voice.
"I have an appointment with this company about setting up an assassination may I please speak to the manager of this…" he looked around at the crummy office.
"Fine company?" he finished sounding like just standing in this office was making him uncomfortable, Dante rolled his eyes. Breaking free from Loona's grip Dante got up and walked over to Blitz's office. Sticking his head inside he saw Blitz was on the phone and guessed by the unhappy look on his face that it was Stolas.
"Hey Blitz, the clients here," Dante said, Blitz immediately perked up.
"Sorry Stolas I got to go," he said hanging up.
"Alright send the fucker in here," he said Dante nodded.
"Blitz will see you now," he said opening the door and gesturing inside, the client walked through as he did Dante felt a chill run up his spine.
Blitz office
Blitz sat across from the client, Blitz typically didn't give two shits about his clients since most of them were in his opinion, a bunch of whiny bitches or worthless simps. This guy, on the other hand, Blitz didn't know but for some reason, this guy creeped the hell out of him.
"So, what brings you in today?" Blitz asked trying to maintain his usual level of confidence, the client shifted in his seat, seeming uncomfortable with the crappy wooden chair he had to sit in. after finally getting comfortable he cleared his throat and started his reply.
"Greetings my name is Mr. Faust and I work for king Lucifer himself," he explained, Blitz's eyes went wide, yeah, he had met nobility before he was screwing Stolas after all but he was just a prince of the Ars Goetia, this guy was one of the king's cronies that meant he outranked Stolas by a lot.
"Oh, wow interesting, we usually just get sinners as clients, not a lot of hellborns not counting Stolas,"
"Prince Stolas, show some respect for your betters peasant," Faust said indignantly, glaring at Blitz. Normally Blitz would have bashed the guy's head in for talking to him like that and he was about to but every nerve in his body told him to let it slide, so he did.
"Uh yeah right so who's the target?" he asked, hoping to get back on topic so this fucker would get out of his office.
"You see my good sir Lucifer tasks me with going to earth and collecting souls, I find those who are lost and directionless and I offer them hope in exchange for their souls," Faust explained.
"Ah so let me guess one of these people isn't holding up their end of the deal?" Blitz asked pretty sure he knew where this was going.
"Correct by good man, a woman named Alma Acardi, she sold her soul to me 60 years ago in exchange for her husband's revival, now I couldn't do that of course as her husband was up in heaven but I let her think I could and I made her serve in a coven of witches, but now she is trying to repent," he said angrily Blitz felt the temperature drop even lower, he noticed frost on his window.
"Wait so this bitch is trying to beg forgiveness from God?" Blitz asked raising an eyebrow.
"That is correct," Faust replied.
"Ahh then it's no problem from what I hear the big man upstairs isn't exactly the most forgiving person, so let this skank do her little prayers, then she'll die and bing bang boom you got her soul," Blitz explained certain that this woman's plan to absolve her sins will fail miserably.
"Normally you'd be correct but this time I fear things will be different," Faust said reaching into his coat pocket and pulling out a coin.
It had a red pentagram on it, the coin was mostly black except for the edge which looked dull silver.
"This coin acts as a mark of contract, now most prefer actual paper contracts but I like using coins their smaller and easier to carry around," Faust explained Blitz didn't really care he just wanted him to get to the point.
"Ok, and why are you showing it to me?" Blitz asked to hope to get him back on track.
"Well you see this coin used to belong to Mrs. Acardi and her giving it to me signified the completion of our deal as I had something of hers and she has something of mine as long as I have this coin her soul is bound to me, but take a closer look at it," Blitz did as instructed taking a closer look at the coin, he noticed that one edge of the coin wasn't a pure black like the rest it had taken on a dull silver color.
"The coin is tarnished which means her penance is working I'm losing my claim on her soul," Faust slammed his hand down on the desk Blitz leaned back startled.
"That is why I am here I need you and your…, employees, to go up to earth and kill her before she completes her penance," he explained, placing the coin in Blitz's hand.
"Take the coin the amount of tarnish should tell you how close she is to repent you need to kill her before the coin completely tarnishes, I give it a day before she's redeemed," he explained standing up and dusting himself off.
"Kill her before then and give her that coin before you do, I expect the best from you Blitz," he turned towards the door, before looking back at Blitz his eyes glowing.
"Don't let me down," he said in a menacing tone.
Some field in Tuscany later that day
It was a quiet evening in Tuscany the sun was starting to set, and a cool breeze blew through the fields, suddenly a bright purplish-blue portal opened atop a hill, and out stepped three red-skinned individuals who quickly surveyed the area before noticing that someone was missing.
"Hey, Dante hurry it up!" Blitz yelled through the portal, Millie and Moxxie looked through the portal Moxxie rolled his eyes at the sight Millie just giggled. Loona was holding Dante in a tight embrace, nuzzling him, and pelting him with kisses.
"Be careful, *kiss* don't get hurt, *kiss* your gonna do great, *kiss* kill that bitch!" Loona said through kisses noticing the others were looking Dante quickly pulled Loona off him, donned his disguise, and headed through the portal, Dante let out a sigh of relief before noticing the way the others were looking at him.
"What?" he asked slightly embarrassed.
"Do you two think you could tone it down a little?" Moxxie asked sounding slightly annoyed, Millie punched him in the arm.
"Oh, stop it, you two are really going strong I see a bit of myself and Moxxie in you two," Millie said wiping a tear from her eye, Dante just rolled his.
"Hey everyone, can we please just get back on track already?" Blitz said pulling out his phone and looking at the instructions Faust had given them.
"Alright, that freak said that one of his "associates" would come by and help us with a human woman, do any of you see her?" he asked looking around trying to spot a human through the dying sunlight.
"Nope, nothing," Moxxie said looking in the other direction.
"Don't see anyone, what about you Dante, you see her… Dante?" Millie looked up at Dante and noticed that he was completely captivated, his eyes were wide as he took in the landscape, he scanned the rolling hills and saw how the setting sunlight made them glow a warm gold. He took in a deep breath releasing it with a happy sigh, Millie saw what she thought was a nostalgic smile on Dante's face and if she didn't know any better, she thought she could see a tear running down his face.
Millie was about to ask him what's up when she heard Blitz shouting.
"I think that's her!" turning in his direction the others saw what he was looking at. Coming up to them an individual wearing a dark purple skirt and a black hoodie with the hood pulled all the way up hid their face, in their hands was a red candle with a dark purple flame. The figure walked up to them moving close enough for the others to see the figure was a woman a very shapely one at that.
"siete quelli che il mio padrone ha inviato?" she asked pulling down her hood revealing a beautiful face framed by long wavy black hair.
"Woah," Dante muttered to himself taking it all in, Millie glared at him and elbowed him in the leg.
"Uhh what was that?" Blitz asked not sure what she had just said.
"She asked if we were the ones Faust sent," Dante replied walking up to the woman.
"Lei parla inglese?" Dante asked in Italian, the woman blinked in confusion for a minute before clearing her throat.
"Yes, come with me," she said in thickly accented English.
Dante quickly followed the woman as she headed down the hill towards a dirt road, the others looked at him confused before eventually following.
Ten minutes later
The four demons walked down the road following the young woman as they moved Dante noticed that she kept glancing back at them, curious Dante moved ahead of the others and stood by the woman.
"So, what's your name bella signora?" he asked in a friendly tone, the woman glanced at him, seemingly unimpressed.
"Mia," she replied bluntly, Dante just smiled.
She's a feisty one, he thought to himself.
"You seem somewhat… unimpressed with us mind if I ask why?" although Dante was pretty sure why she seem unhappy with them.
"You're just not what I was expecting," she said sounding somewhat embarrassed.
"Let me guess you were expecting us to be these massive hulking monsters, with razor-sharp teeth, large claws, and bat wings, right?" he asked the way Mia looked towards the ground made it clear he was correct.
"I just didn't expect you all to be so… small," she said looking back at the others who were clearly insulted by her comment.
"Or so human," Mia said turning to Dante.
"Oh this, this is just a disguise you don't want people seeing demons just walking around so I use this to blend in," Dante explained gesturing to his appearance, Mia sent him a surprised look.
"Wait really?" she asked her voice taking on more emotion than it had before.
"Yep, although it doesn't hide everything," Dante reached up and took off his sunglasses revealing his black and red eyes, Mia stopped in place completely mesmerized by Dante's eyes.
"Wow," she said moving closer to get a better look, Dante took a step back, but Mia didn't falter she kept moving forward until Blitz cleared his throat.
"Listen bitch despite what you were expecting we're the best of the best and right now we have a job to do, so can you please just take us to our target," Blitz asked crossing his arms in frustration.
"Ohh of course, come follow the flame," Mia said as she moved in the direction the candle flame told her to go.
On a hill overlooking an old church
The four members of IMP and the young witch all sat atop a hill overlooking a church, the church was old most likely built sometime in the last century maybe more, gauging by all the ivy and moss growing on the walls.
"You sure the bitch is here?" Blitz asked Mia.
"Yep the candle says so," she said gesturing to the purple flame the tip of which was pointing directly at the church.
"I'm seeing a lot of priests and nuns down there," Dante said observing the movements of various churchly figures moving about out front through binoculars.
"Yes, those worthless fools are here to assist the retched traitors 'absolution' ceremony," Mia explained sounding both disgusted and somewhat hurt.
"questo personale per te?" Dante asked, Mia, looked down at the church her grip on the candle tightening.
"Si, Alma was my mentor, she taught me everything I know about magic, she was like a mother to me, and her turning her back on her coven, her friends, and students it just… it just," Mia stopped wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
"Hey, don't worry we'll kill this bitch and-" Dante stopped dead when his eyes fell upon a certain priest.
This priest had black hair which he kept short on the sides, he was a young man probably in his early twenties, and in the light pouring from the church windows, he saw he had deep brown eyes and around his waist was a scarlet sash.
No way it can't be, Dante thought to himself continuing to stare at the priest. Dante handed the binoculars back to Moxxie and started heading down the hill toward the church.
"Dante, where are you goin?" Millie called out after him, Dante quickly turned around and she noticed he had a frantic look about him.
"Just doing some reconnaissance want to see what kind of protection these guys have and since I look the most human, they won't freak out or get suspicious if they see me," Dante turned back around and quickly made his way down the hill towards the church.
Inside the church
Francesco stood in the church's backroom looking over the list of supplies that they would need to conduct this ritual, he wanted to make sure they had everything they needed to save this poor woman.
"Alright let's do a quick check holy water?"
"Ja," Augusta nun and his personal assistant/companion asked.
"Good, incense?"
"Ja,"
"Are all the priests here?"
"Ja the last one just arrived," Augusta explained.
"Good, alright for tonight I want two reading from Corinthians, two from Revelations, and the last two reading from Matthew," Francesco explained to his assistant who nodded her head in understanding.
"Hey there Frankie," Francesco froze in place upon hearing a familiar voice call him by his childhood nickname.
No, it can be, he thought to himself turning around and seeing a very familiar man standing in the doorway to the back room. The man was wearing black pants, and blood-red shirt, and a black trench coat. He had a swarthy complexion a native Italian, he had jet black hair which hung loose on his head and was not tied back into a ponytail or a bun like Francesco remembered. His eyes were covered by a pair of sunglasses which Francesco found weird since it was dark out and the room was only illuminated by a set of candles.
Is it really you An-" the man raised his hand cutting Francesco off.
"It's Dante now," he said bluntly, Francesco rolled his eyes but decided to play along.
"Alright Dante (real original), what are you doing here?" he asked wondering why Dante was here.
"Well, I heard about that little strega that you're trying to help," Dante said pointing to the main room of the church where she was currently residing with the other priests and nuns.
"Si what about her?" he asked not sure how on earth he knew about Alma.
"Well, the Bastardo she made that deal with isn't too happy about her sudden interest in the lord so he sent a couple of demons to put a stop to it," Francesco went pale, swiftly crossed himself, and muttered a quick hail Mary for good measure. He had a feeling that vile Faust would try to reclaim Alma's soul, he hoped he was wrong, but it seems his instincts were right on the mark.
"Let them come Francesco here and defeat anything Hell sends his way," Augusta said proudly putting her hands on her hips, Dante raised an eyebrow seemingly just taking notice of the nun standing by Francesco.
"Who's the kraut, she your girlfriend or something?" Dante asked with a cheeky grin on his face Augusta blushed at the comment.
"No, she's not, she's my assistant," Francesco said sternly not noticing Augusta's disappointed look at that statement. Suddenly a thought came into Francesco's head.
"Wait how do you know about this?" he asked, curious about how Dante knows the actions of a malicious demon.
Dante reached up and pulled off his glasses showing them his black and red eyes. Augusta let out a squeal of fright and hid behind Francesco, Francesco on the other hand quickly crossed himself again.
"You're a"
"Yep, what you're surprised?" Dante asked raising an eyebrow, Francesco let out a long sigh.
"No just disappointed," he said his voice filled with sadness.
"Yeah, me too," Dante replied his tone matching the priests.
"But like I said, these demons are coming to kill this woman and they don't give two fucks about civilian casualties these people might get hurt hell might even get killed so why don't you just pack up your stuff and get out of here, leave the bitch to her fate?" Dante asked putting his hands in his pockets. Francesco was about to respond when suddenly Augusta stepped forward.
"Let those demons come, Francesco will drive them all away he has the lord on his side nothing and I mean nothing can or will stop him!" Augusta said defiantly, Francesco looked away embarrassed.
"Wow she's enthusiastic," Dante said with a laugh.
"She's just excitable," Francesco said stepping in front of the nun.
"Look I appreciate the warning but no I will not leave poor Alma to her fate I have a moral obligation to help her, and this is an obligation I will hold to, despite the dangers," Francesco said with conviction.
"Aww come on Frankie, leave her, Hells not… that bad," he said with a nervous smile.
"Sorry, Tony- I mean Dante but I can't do that I have to help this woman it is my job as a servant of God to help his children even those who have been led astray, I can't just abandon her," he explained, Dante sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
"Well, it was worth a shot," he said before putting his glasses back on and heading out the door. Dante wasn't surprised, Francesco wasn't the kind of guy who gives up easily and would never turn down those in need.
"But I will not make the others stay, it will not put their lives in danger, I will explain the situation and let them choose," Francesco yelled after Dante who looked back sending him an approving nod. Once Dante was gone Francesco turned to Augusta.
"Look Augusta, I want you to head back to Roma," he said, Augusta looked at him in shock not believing her ears.
"What, why!?" she asked devastated that he would want her to leave, did she do something wrong, was he mad at her?
"Because this could be very dangerous and I don't want you getting hurt," he said putting a hand on her shoulder, she blushed at the contact.
"I appreciate the concern but if you're staying to help this woman then I'm staying too," she said with conviction, placing her hand on his and giving it a squeeze.
"Please Augusta, this is serious there's a chance you could die! I couldn't live with myself if that happened," Augusta felt her face heat up more, the fact he cared so much about her made her heart flutter.
"Thank you master but if you're staying, I'm staying, I am your disciple, after all, I have to stay and take notes," she said with a smile, Francesco rolled his eyes at the whole "disciple" and "master" thing but he smiled finding her determination and courage admirable.
"Well then let's get to work then," Francesco turned away and headed out the door to inform the others about the newest development.
Atop the hill 20 minutes later
The four assassins and one witch sat atop the hill and discussed what to do to take out the target.
"I say we just go in guns blazing," Blitz said holding up his pistol, Dante rolled his eyes.
"How about a little more subtly Blitz, I saw we just sneak in and slit her throat when they're not looking," Dante said the others didn't seem so interested in his idea though.
"Yeah, sorry sweetie but I'm with Blitz on this one," Millie said pointing to Blitz.
"Yeah, me too it seems like a good idea and besides it's not like these fuckers have any good security," Moxxie replied Blitz sent Dante a smug smile.
"I think it's a good idea," Mia responded.
"Stay out of this," Blitz replied sharply. Blitz immediately stood up and headed down the hill followed by Millie and Moxxie, Dante sighed and stood up.
"Sorry my boss is such a cazzo," he said to Mia before heading down. Mia smiled before suddenly looking confused.
"Wait I thought you were the boss?" she mumbled to herself.
Down at the church,
Dante followed his three coworkers as they ran down the hill towards the old church, he was finally able to catch up when they stopped by the front door. He saw a smile on Blitz's face Dante knew his boss well enough to know that face meant someone was gonna get hurt, turning around Blitz kicked the door wide open. Dante looked inside he saw a decrepit old woman lying on a bed surrounded by a number of priests and nuns whom all turned to the door with a look of bewilderment and fear etched on their faces all except one who just looked at them with a stern look, but when his eyes fell on Dante they were just filled with disappointment, Dante looked away.
"Listen up fuckers we only came for the saggy old skank so why don't the rest of you fuckers take your circle jerk session somewhere else," Blitz said, taking satisfaction from their shocked reactions at his vulgarity. One priest walked forward Blitz noticed that he wasn't scared whatsoever.
Hm, this guy's got some balls, he thought to himself as the priest moved to the front blocking and positioning himself between them and the target.
"Listen here, creature, this woman is under my protection, I have been assigned to guide her back to the ways of the Lord and I nor anyone here will let any harm come to her, so I will have to ask you to leave and go back to whatever dark hole you came from," he glared down at Blitz who just chuckled.
"You got some balls don't you buddy, well ok if you want to die so bad, we can accommodate you," Blitz stated, he was about to raise his pistol but decided to have a little fun with the guy, putting his gun away Blitz instead pulled out a serrated knife.
Raising the knife in the air Blitz charged forward ready to gut the priest who had begun playing with some beads only for Blitz to suddenly hit something hard and fell to the ground. Getting back up Blitz reached forward and felt his hand meet an invisible wall, it was like someone just put up a big plexiglass shield. Scowling Blitz began hammering on the barrier trying to break the others joined in as well all except Dante who just watched a look of amusement clear on his face. After battering the barrier for a good ten minutes Blitz got frustrated pulling out his pistol he took aim at the priest who was still muttering while playing with his necklace. Blitz aimed his gun at the target's head but as he was about to fire, he felt something bump into his shoulder, the sudden jolt caused him to miss his mark. The bullet ricocheted across the church nearly hitting a few people, before bouncing off the stone floor and whacking Blitz's crotch, before embedding itself in one of the big wooden doors. Blitz fell to the ground gripping his crotch and squealing in pain, realizing that this plan of attack wasn't going to work Dante grabbed Blitz and took off followed closely by Millie and Moxxie.
Later
The four demons and one witch sat on the hill contemplating their next move, Blitz held the coin in his hand noticing that the tarnish was getting bigger now about a fourth of the coin was covered, this meant they had to hurry.
"How about we set the building on fire?" Blitz suggested Dante just shook his head.
"The building is made of stone it would take too long for the fire to spread and by the time it spreads to the whole building they will have escaped," Dante explained.
"Ohh, I know how about we toss in a bunch of grenades!" Moxxie said excitedly, the others nodded their heads in agreement clearly liking the idea, except Dante.
"Great idea but we only got like two," Dante said.
"So, we'll just head back and get some more," Blitz said pulling out his phone to call Loona.
"We don't have anymore," Dante explained Blitz and the others looked at him confused.
"What do you mean we don't have any more last time I checked we had a whole box of them?" Moxxie asked not sure what Dante was talking about.
"No, remember we tried to get a new shipment, but the guy said that most of his stuff was blown up in the last turf war between Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb," Dante explained the others looked confused they didn't remember that happening but it sounded believable so maybe he was right.
"Bullshit that never happened, I'm calling Loona," Blitz said dialing his daughter.
"Hey, Blitz what's up?" Loona asked sounding bored.
"Hey Loonie, do you mind opening a portal we need some more grenades," Blitz explained sending Dante a smug look.
Loona looked at the half-open supply closet and saw an overflowing box labeled grenades on one of the shelves.
"Sorry Blitz but we're out of grenades right now, remember the supplier's stuff got blown up in that last turf war," Loona said hanging up, Blitz put his phone down and turned to the others.
"Uhh looks like we're out of grenades," he said embarrassed, Dante sent him a smug grin Blitz scowled at his employee.
Loona looked down at her phone re-reading the text Dante sent her right before Blitz called.
Loona, tell Blitz we're out of grenades and that the suppliers lost everything in a turf war, thank you mio dolce lupchiotto, (my sweet little wolf)
Loona didn't know why Dante wanted her to lie to Blitz but hey no skin off her bones.
"Alright, we need to kill this bitch soon and the only way to do that is to get rid of that little jizz stain priest, so how about," Blitz was interrupted by the sound of some dogs barking.
"Dammit would someone shut those dumb mutts up!" Blitz shouted in frustration.
"Where is that coming from anyway?" Moxxie asked.
"Oh, those are old Lorenzo's dogs, he owns a vineyard a few kilometers down the road, nasty little things, Dobermans try to kill anything that comes too close," Mia explained her voice full of disdain, Blitz was about to tell her to shut up but suddenly he got an idea.
Several minutes later
Millie and Blitz stood in front of the church holding onto a set of leashes that were connected to three snarling growling Dobermans, the three dogs were pulling against the leashes snarling frothing at the mouth ready to tear the throats out of anyone who got too close.
"This isn't gonna work," Dante said taking a bite from a bunch of grapes he got from Lorenzo's vineyard.
"Dammit Dante would you stop being so negative," Millie said being pulled forward by one of the dogs before regaining her grip.
"Yeah, Dante this will totally work, open the door Moxxie!" Blitz shouted Moxxie nodded his head and opened the door to the church it was at that moment Blitz and Millie let go of the leashes. The dogs came running forward barreling into the church this was followed by the sounds of screams and barking. Blitz and the others laughed taking amusement in the sounds of pain and suffering suddenly the screams all started coming from one voice the voice Blitz recognized as belonging to that D-bag priest.
"Ohh, I got to see this," Blitz stuck his head in the doorway so he could watch the carnage unfold the others followed suit hoping to see the dogs tear him limb from limb. He saw the dogs all standing around in a circle all growling and barking, looking closer Blitz saw a pair of legs sticking out of the circle and flailing about. Listening Blitz laughed as he heard the guy scream in agony.
"Oh man they are tearing him to shreds," Blitz said through laughter.
"You sure about that boss?" Dante asked taking another bite of grapes from the bunch.
"What do you mean?" Blitz asked confused at what Dante was referring to.
"Just take a closer look," Dante said around the mouthful of grapes.
Taking a closer look at the site in front of him Blitz realized that the dogs weren't barking in anger or rage but instead in excitement, and the priest wasn't screaming in pain he was laughing, the dogs weren't attacking him they were licking him. Sitting up the priest pushed the dogs away a happy smile on his face.
"Ok ok I appreciate the affection but that's enough," he said joyfully, the dogs stood by panting wagging their tales excitedly, one of the dogs moved closer Dante grabbed it and pulled it into a hug gently petting it.
"Aww," Millie cooed at the adorable site in front of her, Moxxie and Blitz just stared dumbfounded, while Dante just had a blaise expression and continued to eat his grapes.
Well, I saw this coming, Dante thought to himself as he watched Francesco pet the dog.
"I must ask why are you creature gentili hear?" Francesco asked the dog as he continued to gently stroke it. The dog let out a gentle bark, and Francesco's eyes widened in surprise.
"Wait you were stolen by who?" he asked shocked by what the hound had told him, the hounds suddenly turned their heads to look at the four demons by the door.
Suddenly the joyful expressions on the dog's faces quickly turned into angry growls, the three hounds then suddenly ran down the aisle towards the demons, seeing the dogs coming Millie, Moxxie, and Blitz suddenly took off down the road with the dogs hot on their heels. While the others ran Dante just stood by the door watching the scene, Francesco stepped out of the church watching as the dogs chased the demons out of sight.
"I told them it wouldn't work," he said to the priest who just nodded in agreement.
"Are you they gonna give up now?" Francesco asked but was disappointed when Dante shook his head.
"Nope not until the witch is dead," he said eating another grape.
"Of course," he said in an exacerbated tone of voice, before heading back inside.
Twenty minutes later
"Alright guys we have to take this bitch out soon we don't have a lot of time left!" Blitz shouted holding up the coin, which was now half tarnished, looking up he saw the moon was getting closer to the horizon, the night was passing, and the first rays of sunlight would start pouring in soon.
"Well, sir I have no idea what we're supposed to do we can't get in because of that damn barrier, we don't have any explosives, and our attempts to use dogs failed… miserably," Moxxie groaned rubbing his bites, and cuts, the others except Dante did the same.
"Told you that wouldn't work," Dante said for the twelfth time tonight, the other just scowled at him.
"If only there was a fire twister around here those things can smash through a fuckin skyscraper that would definitely take that saggy old bitch out," Millie said absentmindedly, Blitz's eyes then widened as an idea came to mind.
"That's it, if we can't get in then I say we gotta take down that damn church just drop it on the old bitch," Blitz stated staring down at the church from the hill they were on.
"And how the hell are we gonna do that sir, we don't have any explosives remember?" Moxxie asked crossing his arms.
"I might be able to help you," Blitz and the others jumped in surprise turning around they saw Mia sitting a few feet away.
"Holy fuck I forgot you were there," Blitz said holding his chest, Mia gave him an offended look.
"You say you can help us bring down the church, how?" Dante asked giving the young witch a skeptical look.
"Well, my teacher before she deserted us taught me a spell that can create storms over small areas, I can create storms so powerful they can destroy buildings I think I can create one that can knock down the church," Mia explained the other looked at her with amazement.
"Shit seriously?" Millie asked.
"Yeah, I believe so I just need to make the circle then we can start," Mia then picked a stick off the ground and began scratching a circle and symbol into the ground. It took about twenty minutes, but Mia finally completed the process, sitting cross-legged in the center and closing her eyes, she began to recite the incantation.
"Oh, Hecate, the great mother of witches I ask you to bring about a storm to ravage the land, bring thunder and lightning, bring powerful winds to tear apart the land, bring freezing rain to drown all those who stand in your way," reaching into her hoodie Mia pulled out a small switchblade, extended the blade and sliced open her palm, holding out her hand she let the blood drip onto the circle causing it to glow a dull red.
"Your humble disciple begs you, bring this storm and destroy all foolish enough to turn their backs on your greatness and try to take what's yours!" she finished her chant and for a moment nothing happened Blitz was about to say that it was a dud but then he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.
Dark clouds rolled in blocking out the moon and stars. The winds picked up starting with a gentle breeze and then turning into a full-fledged cyclone, Moxxie was nearly blown away by the heavy winds but luckily Millie was able to catch him. Rain began to fall, thick heavy rain that felt like broken glass and was so cold that one drop was enough to leave frost burns, Dante pulled up his coat to block the freezing rain, the others were not so lucky, Mia sat still in the circle seemingly unphased by the intense weather. Thunder boomed and bolts of lightning crashed down around the church one bolt even hitting the steeple causing a few bricks to fall off.
At this rate the church will be destroyed I have to, Dante reached into his coat grabbing the handle of his gun he was about to pull it out but suddenly the rain and wind stopped, the clouds disappeared the moon and stars showed once again. The other stood dumbstruck unable to comprehend what had just happened.
"Che cazzo!" Mia muttered in utter and complete shock. Dante swiftly made the sign of the cross, thankfully no one noticed
The church a few moments earlier
The priest and nuns cried in terror as the church shuddered from a hit from a lightning bolt. A violent storm had suddenly appeared, and the church was being shaken and rocked like a dingy in a hurricane. Augusta lost her footing as another bolt shook the building Francesco reached out and steadied her.
"We have to get out of here!" a priest screamed in horror, about to head for the door but was stopped when Francesco grabbed his arm.
"No don't give into fear, keep steady and remember your devotion and teachings to the Lord," Francesco yelled to the others hoping to keep them calm.
"No get out of here my life isn't worth yours leave me to my fate," Alma muttered from her bed, while some of the others looked ready to run, Francesco on the other hand stepped forward and took her hand in his.
"No, I will not give up on you, the devil can throw as many tricks at me as he wants I will not give in!" he said as another bolt of lightning struck.
"Keep faith everyone remember the book of Mark when the Apostles were caught out in a heavy storm Gesu did not let his fellows drown," Francesco opened the doors and stepped out into the freezing winds and rain.
"He faced the storm and said Quiet be still!" he shouted suddenly the storm vanished, the rains stopped, and the winds were once again calm. Heading back into the church he saw the others looking at him in wonder and awe.
"Why are you so afraid? Do you not have faith?" he said with a smirk as he closed the doors.
Back on the hill
Blitz looked out at the horizon, the dark midnight blue of the night sky was beginning to fade, and the dark nearly black shade of blue was beginning to give way to a lighter shade of blue, the sun. blitz stared down at the coin, which was now 90 percent tarnished, they need to kill this bitch now.
"Alright, guys how the fuck are we gonna do this?" Blitz asked trying not to let his nervousness show, the others just looked at the ground and fidgeted nervously, it was at that moment that Blitz finally lost his cool.
"Come the fuck on people! We need to kill this saggy old slut now we don't have a lot of time left and if we fuck up that Faust guy will butcher us!" Blitz stood up and paced back and forth they only had about an hour before the old lady bit the dust and Blitz had no idea how they were gonna take her out. Looking down at the church Dante saw one of the priests step out of the church go around the corner and light a cigarette, suddenly he got an idea.
Immediately getting up Dante snatched the coin from Blitz and grabbed Mia and headed down towards the church, the others watched him curiously.
"What the fuck is he doing?" Moxxie asked watching his fellow coworker.
"Whatever it is I hope it fuckin works," Millie said apprehensively.
As the priest finished his cigarette, he extinguished it on the sole of his shoe and made to head back inside but before he could take even one step he felt something hit him in the base of his skull. The priest fell to the ground unconscious, Dante smiled and began stripping off his clothes, Mia's eyes went wide her face turned red.
"Uh what are you doing?" she asked flustered covering her eyes with her hands while subtly peeking through them.
"I'm going to try to sneak in disguised as one of the priests they likely won't notice me since they'll all be too focused on the witch, but you never know," he explained putting on the priest's robes.
"Ok so why do you need me?" she asked as Dante finished putting the robes on.
"Like I said I doubt they'll notice me, but I want you to use a spell to make me unnoticeable," he explained to the young witch.
"You want me to make you invisible?" she asked raising an eyebrow.
"Can you?" he asked curiously.
"No sorry I could but it doesn't work in churches," she said, Dante looked disappointed, but he got over it quickly.
"But I do have something that will make you more… indistinguishable would that help?" she asked Dante nodded; Mia quickly chanted the incantation then tapped Dante on the forehead.
"There you go this should make you less noticeable," she said with a smile putting her hands on her hips.
"Good," he said dusting off the robes then Mia remembered something important.
"Wait what about your eyes?" she asked pointing at his black and red eyes.
"Can't change them so sunglasses will have to do," Dante said pulling out his glasses and putting them on then headed into the church.
As Dante entered the church he was immediately hit with the smell of Frankincense and Myrrh Dante smiled at the smell, memories from his younger years flooding into his mind. Dante quickly shook his head he had a job and need to take care of it now, looking around he saw all the priests and nuns standing around the witch all reciting hymns and prayers, he saw Francesco kneeling by her side his bible in one hand the other on her shoulder. Moving slowly and methodically toward the target Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out the coin, the tarnish had grown he saw that he probably had only a few minutes left before it was too late. As he was looking at the coin Dante didn't notice the young woman walking down the aisle bumping into her Dante's glasses fell loose almost falling off his face luckily, he was able to put them back on before they fell but as he did so the nun caught a glimpse of his eyes. The woman let out a blood-curdling scream the others all stopped what they were doing and looked at them.
"er ist es, er ist es!" she shouted in German pointing at Dante, Francesco looked at Dante instantly recognizing him, obviously the charm Mia cast on Dante wasn't working.
Rushing forward Dante charged toward Alma ready to give her the coin when two priests came barreling at him moving out of the way quickly Dante ran through one of the pews hoping to get to her by vaulting over the rows of benches. As he did one of the priests was able to tackle him to the ground, the priest wrapped his arms around his neck and began choking him, but the man was very weak, allowing Dante to break free. Grabbing the guy by the collar he lifted him into the air and threw him at another priest knocking him down. As Dante headed towards Alma one of the nuns threw a bible at him quickly dodging Dante continued moving forward. Francesco moved quickly he was not going to let this bastardo ruin Alma's chance of redemption as he moved towards Dante he saw Augusta standing at the end of the pew her ankle out ready to trip him, he saw Dante look down he knew what she was going to do it wasn't going to work, he had to; Dante tripped, he actually tripped it wasn't possible he saw her stick her ankle out he should have been able to avoid it but no he tripped. Dante was not defeated though as he fell, he threw the coin through the air at Alma, moving quickly Francesco reached for the coin but it was just out of reach. The coin fell straight towards Alma only centimeters from her form before suddenly it crumbled into dust.
Alma went still, her coughing fits stopped, her eyes were closed, and a gentle smile was on her face, Dante and Francesco both saw a small ball of silvery light leave her chest and float toward the ceiling. Phasing through the structure the ball of light continued upwards before vanishing in the shining light of the rising sun.
"In Nomine Patris," Francesco said crossing himself, he did it Alma's soul had been saved and was now in the arms of the lord reunited with her beloved husband. Francesco was taken out of his revelry when he noticed the other priests and nuns sounding nervous, he saw that Dante had gotten up and was heading for the door the others were trying to stop him.
"No let him go, he's no threat now," he said with determination in his voice, Dante looked back at him and sent him a smile.
He fell on purpose didn't you didn't want to kill her you wanted to help, Francesco thought to himself a tear forming in the corner of his eye, despite what he's become Dante was still a good person deep down. As Dante exited the church, he was approached by Mia who came up to him ecstatic.
"Did you do it is she in the arms of our dark master?" she asked him.
"Nope I got there too late she's in heaven now," Dante explained pointing at the sky. Mia scowled furiously at the answer.
"She's what?! How the fuck did you guys fail, what kind of demons are you? You are some of the most worthless and pathetic creatures I have ever seen I don't know why my master even sent you your nothing, but a bunch of-" Mia was cut off from her rant when Dante snapped her neck. Dropping her corpse to the ground Dante headed back to the group he explained what had happened, they were not happy about it.
"Thanks, a fucking lot Dante you know I should fire your ass right-" Dante's hand wrapped tightly around Blitz's throat lifting him off the ground he brought Blitz to eye level.
"Listen, Blitz, it has been a long night and I am in no mood for this so unless you want a broken neck you will shut up," he said menacingly dropping Blitz he got up dusted himself off, and pulled out his phone, a portal back to the office opened the three demons walked though except Dante.
"You comin' sweety?" Millie asked noticing Dante wasn't coming.
"No, I need some time to myself right now," he said Millie shrugged and headed through, as the portal closed Dante sat down and watched as the sun rose over the Tuscan countryside.
Dante watched in admiration as the golden rays of the sun shone down on the golden fields and hills, he smiled at the beautiful sight before him.
I wish I had a canvas and some paint this would make an amazing painting, he thought to himself with a smile.
"Tuscana truly is beautiful, isn't it?" a familiar voice asked him.
"It is, no wonder so many great artists settled here," Dante replied, Francesco, walked up and sat down beside him.
"Despite how pretty it is Tuscana doesn't compare to Roma," he said a hint of sadness in his voice. The two sat in silence for a few minutes before Francesco finally spoke up.
"You tripped on purpose, didn't you?" he asked, Dante didn't reply but his smirk said it all.
"Grazie, mille grazie," was his reply, suddenly Dante's phone pinged pulling it out Dante looked at the message and then got up.
"Sorry bro but I gotta get going," he said suddenly a portal opened up as Dante was about to step through Francesco grabbed him by the arm. Dante turned around and suddenly Francesco pushed something into his hand. Looking down he saw a small black cross pendant, Dante smirked tucked the pendant into his pocket, and crossed through the portal. The portal closed Francesco stared at the spot where the portal once was, and a tear fell down his cheek.
"Addio fratello," he muttered under his breath.
Epilogue
Lucifer sat at a small table in the gardens of his luxurious palace, well garden might be putting it lightly it was more like his own private park, the space was massive probably bigger than two city blocks with a variety of plant life, most of it lethal. Across from him sat a serpentine demoness, she had dark green skin, bright yellow eyes with slit pupils, and long black hair.
"It's good to see you again Hecate, how have you been?" Lucifer asked taking a sip from a cup of tea.
"I've been alright works been going fine, for the most part, how are you is your daughter still doing that hotel thing?" the demoness asked Lucifer to put down his cup and sighed.
"Yes, no matter how hard I or Lilith try she will not give up on this stupid fantasy of hers, I'm afraid she's just gonna have to learn the hard way," he said pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"But enough about Charlotte but what about that nephew of yours has he talked to you yet or is he still ghosting you?" he asked, Hecate looked down at her cup, a forlorn expression on her face.
"No, the boy still won't talk to me, every time I try to talk to him or spend time with him, he ignores me or tells me to leave him alone, nothing I do works," she explained Lucifer thought he heard a sniffle.
"It's all my stupid brother's fault, he filled his head with lies and garbage he made Aaron hate me, the fucking hypocrite," she muttered angrily, gripping her cup of tea so tightly it shattered, seeing this Hecate took a deep breath to calm herself.
"Hey, it's his loss if he wants to spend the rest of eternity alone, then let him, he doesn't deserve such a sweet woman like you," Lucifer said sweetly putting a hand on hers, she smiled.
"Always the charmer," Hecate said with a smile.
"It's how I got Lilith," he said proudly.
"Oh, I thought it was because you were the only other option," Hecate snarked, Lucifer glared and then laughed.
"Still as witty as ever I see," Lucifer said through a laugh, Hecate smiled then suddenly remembered something.
"Oh, hey I forgot to mention one of our witches repented," she explained the situation to Lucifer who just shrugged his shoulders.
"Ehh unfortunate but who cares we got plenty more what's one bitch when we got hundred up there willing to do my dirty work," Lucifer said taking another sip from his tea.
"I know but I brought it up because her absolvement was led by the Francesco guy," Hecate said, Lucifer put down his cut now much more interested in the conversation.
"Really well I'm not surprised he's always been a thorn in my side, all the proselytizing, all the exorcism, all the demons he's banished such a nuisance," Lucifer said shaking his head.
"Shame we can't kill him, what about corrupting him as we did to all those other priests and cardinals, and monks?" Hecate asked thinking back fondly to all those so-called "men of God" who turned to sin and debauchery, Lucifer just shook his head.
"Nope we've tried I've offered him wealth, the office of Pope, women, hell even Lilith tried to seduce him, nothing," he explained Hecate looked at him in utter shock.
"Wait that guy turned down Lilith… how the fuck is that even possible it's Lilith no one can resist her?!" she asked utterly shocked that the queen of Hell the hottest woman in the universe was turned down by a mere mortal.
"I know I couldn't believe it either, Lilith was so devastated by his rejection it took her weeks to get over it," he explained his voice filled with sympathy for his beloved wife who still struggled with self-esteem issues from her breakup with Adam.
"What about his brother, we still got eyes on him?" Lucifer asked Hecate who nodded her head.
"Yep, still watching him he's shown some remarkable skills he's a good fighter and possesses quite the sadistic streak, I think he could be of use," Hecate said Lucifer smiled reaching into his coat and pulling out a small black box.
Impressive but I think I'll test him myself before making him the offer, he thought to himself his smile growing wider and more sinister.
