Episode 4: Let'5 Pl4y: T34m_TrI0ut5 (Let's Play: Team Tryouts)

[Opening Theme plays]

Opening narration: It's time to see what the cast is up to in their daily lives. It's a beautiful morning at Malhur Academy. The sun is rising over flint cliff. Sailboats can be seen coasting across the inlet's mouth. There's seagulls roosting on the quads. The happy morning song from looney toons is playing. You know the one. {opening - The William Tell Overture}

[And there's Axel and Ethan sleeping. Axel in his weighted comforter. Ethan is on top of the blankets wearing the shirt he was wearing yesterday.

"Happening Today" by Orange starts blaring from the alarm clocks screwed into the walls above each of their heads. Cardboard targets pop up on both. Simultaneously Axel and Ethan sit up. Axel fumbles sleepily beneath his pillow. Ethan snatches something out from under his.

PINK

Axel pulls out a Nerf gun and fires at the target on Ethan's alarm clock until the target is slammed back and down and the light turns red. He glances upward and sees the blue light on his already, and braces.

Ethan empties his clip at Axel.

PINK PINK PINK PINK PINK

The nerf darts patter to the floor as Axel comes out of his winch.

Ai's 3D overlay pops into the scene.]

Ai: What did I just watch?

Ethan: I need to go lift and I don't want a repeat of what Zama did when I slept through it.

Axel: And I need time before class to program.

Ethan: Axel had the idea to turn waking up into a coopetition.

Axel: We compete to work together.

Ai: That's PINK such a weird PINK way to start your PINK. I thought you emptied your clip!

Ethan: [Holding a single shot jolt] Secondary.

Ai: Why does it have to be darts?

Ethan: We need to practice.

Ai: For what?

Axel: Don't worry about it.

[Meanwhile Ines is still sleeping in her bed, her hair a tangle.

Axel immediately hops on the computer.

Ethan lifts in the weight room in the gym.]

[Kids are filtering into the cafeteria.

Ethan has a double decker omelet with everything on it from the omelet bar station and has it topped with soft serve ice cream from the machine.

Ines forces herself to sit up in bed. She looks at her phone, eyes go wide and immediately jumps up and runs out the door, then comes back into her room to change into clothes.

Axel has a balanced meal with sausage, yogurt with granola and blueberries, cereal, and an apple. He's back in the U shaped coach on the second floor typing on his laptop.

Ines misses the Zoe, Laundry and the other girls in their group as she and Mabel just get there as they are leaving. Cut to Ines puts the milk in her bowl, goes to sit down, comes back to get cereal and gets looks from the other students the entire way.

Ethan is sitting near the main course buffet area on the first floor where the kitchens window has people in line for whatever is being set out for the meal period.]

Sophie: Dude pass the ketchup.

Darren Get it yourself.

Dylan: Dude, she pulled her shoulder blade during lifting

Darren: Okay fine. [passes the bottle]

[And other students at the same table.]

Tyler K: Yeah it's just sitting scenes today and the money printing musical number.

Tyller D: Get ready to hear cha ching cha ching again.

Tyler K: Dude I'm hearing that every time I close my eyes.

Tyller D: [Menacingly] Cha ching.

Tyler K: [playfully] Dude stop

[Ethan is also at the table with these guys, still in sweat pants and exercise clothes, but there's a noticeable pocket of space around him. (which he utilizes by having 2 plates of food)

Ines and Mabel are eating at their now empty booth.

Ines: They keep calling on me in American literature. He wanted me to explain meaning behind the title. The TITLE!.

Mabel: Are you raising your hand every third question? If he thinks you're making an effort they never call on you.

Ines: Yes, but he always get's me when I have it down or when I turn my head for a second to read the room.

[Axel, Ines, and Ethan go to classes. Axel has Japanese, Ethan has American Sign Language, Ines has French.

Axel is memorizing Kanji on the board, Ethan is bored in ASL with the two other people there who looks like they need to learn ASL. Ines seems relaxed doing the relatively easy French word questions.

[Ines and Mabel are doing warm up in gym. They've changed into Gi and are doing practice kicks with pads.]

Ines: I've been meaning to ask, am I in the wrong gym class?

Mabel: Nope, This is main PE core. Why do you say that?

Ines: There's only about a dozen people here.

[Show the five other pairs of students doing the warm up exercises while the instructor is watching.]

Mabel: it's because everyone takes one semester of it, then switches to the replacement elective.

Ines: What elective?

SPLAT

[Ethan scores two people with paintballs. Ducks back behind the plastic cover, leans out and gets a third. Is grinning.]

[All the students are in the circular room with tiers of desks all facing the teacher's podium in the center. Screens are facing out at every angle so the students can see what the current topic is.]

Teacher: I need a volunteer. [Ines has her hand up along with half the class.] Anyone. [Ines puts a hand down to reach for her water bottle in her backpack]

Teacher: Ines. [She flinches] Can you explain why the author made the drapes purple? What literary device does it employ?

[The sun transitions in the sky to midday. The students are going back to classes from lunch.]

Music teacher: Alright baritones one more time.

Axel: [bored] Cha Ching cha ching

Music teacher: Now just the tenors

Ethan: [bored] Cha Ching cha ching

[Ines has Algebra at the same time. y = xa + b is on the board.]

[Ethan, Ines, and Axel are all in a class with rolling desks. Everyone has a laptop open. Some have the power cords plugged into the outlets set into the floor. The assignment of "how to use the command line and basic directory navigation" is on the smart board up front. Ethan is messing with his computer using technomancy instead of doing the assignment.]

Axel: No that's not it. Come on.

Mr. Thay: It's best to just take it one step at a time. Compare your command to the example command website and… that's not the assignment. Wait this is from next unit.

Axel: I didn't complete the assignment yet.

Mr. Thay: You need to complete this unit before covering the next.

Axel: I can speed through it later. Now I have time to focus so I need to study specific topics now that I need for a project. I'm already behind as it is.

Mr. Thay: It's more important to learn the basics one step at a time. If you rush you're just going to trip over yourself and end up making more mistakes.

[Ai steps into existence behind Ines.]

Ai: Hey Nessy.

Ines: Hey.

Ai: When can you visit the Annex again? We need to figure out somethings and Axel wanted to show you and Ethan something.

Ines: I can't today. I'm going out with Zoe and Mabel.

Ai: Right but when?

Ines: I don't know.

A bunch of students are sitting on roiling desks staring at the Student Extracurricular activities president, a senior with short cut hair and a perfect smile on his face and wants to share that smile with everyone.

Dylan Coranet: Let's finish the weekly student activities council meeting up fast since it's early release. [nods to Andrew, the monitor from the dorms, who is running the presentation on the smart board.]

Axel: [thinking angrily.] We've been here for an hour and it was only supposed to be 15 min.

Dylan: Tyller D, the drama club wanted funding for a functional staircase prop instead of just a painted backdrop, correct? All in support?

Everyone raises a hand.

Dylan: Athletics director Zama. No current requests from the athletics department?

Coach Zama: Correct

Dylan: There's a request for a touch screen table for the conspiracy club. But I don't see Mabel here.

Axel: [thinks] She's never here.

Dylan: They lack a rep, So request denied I guess.

Dylan: Art club, apparently a duplicate from the drama request since they're working on the backgrounds. Guys make sure you're only submitting one request form.

Zoe: Sure.

Dylan: Robotics club, no current requests.

Dylan: Cyberlympics club. Funding for tournament registration to enter the next state championship. All in support?

The adults, Zama and Andrew raise their hands. Axel and Tyller raises theirs. Art and Robotics representatives too.

Dylan: All opposed. No one. And one abstained for Mabel.

Dylan: Community Club, a school wide paintball contest. You know I'm going to have to reject this. Why do you keep submitting these? Swim team; No requests. Track/cross country; No requests. Racing: No off season requests.

Dylan: Finally the Esports club. You have a request for money for tournament registration.

Axel and the two adults, Zama and Andrew, raise their hands in support. Axel has held up his hand with a smile mask plastered on his face for each vote so far, but now is serious.

Tyller, Zoe, and the rest of the club reps vote opposed.

Dylan: One abstained, Majority Opposed.

Axel: [still smiling] [Thinks angrily] This is the third time! Are you serious? You can't possibly hold a grudge for this long!

President: The request has been denied. Okay this is the third time we've had a vote on this topic so you need to resubmit your request.

Axel: [Gritted teeth] We can't wait until the next meeting for it to be approved. The registration ends next week. What reasons do you have against our club?

Cyberlympics club Rep: Yeah, but it exceeds month's spending limit and that's above what everyone else asking for.

Axel: It's literally the only thing we're requesting money for this year.

Tyller D: [half-mocking] Well you might ask for something else in the future.

Axel: [thinking] That is the weakest excuse I've ever heard yet.

Dylan: If that's all, since we're done with requests, the meeting is adjor-

Axel: What about my second request?

President: A second [looks at the computer]… a boat? Why do you need a boat?

Axel: We need it to get to where the events we're participating in are happening.

Dylan: Okay, all in favor?

[Only Axel, Zama, and Andrew vote for.]

Dylan: denied.

Axel: That's just petty and you all know it.

[They ignore him.]

Axel: There's no reason for you to say no. You're just doing this because you're against me.

Dylan: Okay, now meeting adjured.

Everyone files out.

Axel: [thinks] I can feel your condemning stares.

Andrew: [As he's getting ready to leave] Has anyone seen Frosch. [asking Zama]

Zama: No, not since this morning.

[Andrew stops Axel before he leaves.]

Andrew: BTW, Axel, you need to visit Caroline's office as soon as you can.

Axel: [internal screaming] Okay.

[Zoe, Landry, Mabel, Ines are walking through the multistory mall. Shops decorate themselves with bold signs and window displays on deals. That which are open. Most are closed with boarded up windows. Floor is torn up. Generic light bulbs hanging from cords instead of integrated Fluorescent in the ceiling. Signs that say "cash only, system down" on front of most of the stores.

They have to walk over planks set over trenches to get over repairs on the floor. It looks like the wires ripped themselves out of the floor, then froze in an upright position ready to strike like a tentacle of a kraken. Someone had turned it into a statue. There's a donation box in front of it.

Ahead of her is Mabel and Landry with Zoe leading the pack. Ines is staying off to the side and back. They are all walking in a line with Zoe in the middle, Mabel and Landry on either side slightly behind conversing about something about a monster that lives in the national park.]

Mabel: It tore through a metal door and there's footprints. What does that?

Landry: A bear.

Mabel: What kind of bear does that?

Landry: A big one.

[Ines is twitching, looking around nervously as she walks. Straying away from the group to avoid the walls of people walking past the girls on either side.]

Landry: [glances back to Ines] What looks good? I know they had some outdoor jackets from Infinity 22. Breathable, quick dry. Stuff like that.

Ines: I have winter boots?

Landry: Well, no. You're going to be climbing a path on cliff. At the top there's a great spot that looks over the lake. Oh, and the park has this bridge right next to the waterfall.

Ines: We spend our early release prepping for a weekend hiking trip?

Landry: If it's too much of a commitment, you don't have to come.

Ines: Nono, it's just... It's good to relax once in a while.

[Zoe is avoiding talking to Ines.]

[Mabel falls back to Ines.]

Ines: [whispers] What's with her?

Mabel. [Whispers]. Zoe was pissed that I brought you along. She heard about you smashing that kids head in class last week. She's creeped out. Plus you ditching the beach, you need to get her on your side today.

Ines: I can't.

Mabel: Try at least. I don't think I'll be on her good side if you can't. She didn't want you to come today.

Ines: Why am I even here then?

Mabel: Cause I did.

[Show Axel riding a motor boat with the Malhur academy logo on the side. He had ear buds in. He's checking texts to Ines. She hasn't responded to any of them.]

Axel: [on phone] Ethan, I got us a boat so we can make the trip to the lab faster. Call me back when you need a ride over.

[Turns into the cove and drives into the indoor marina with the U-shaped dock and steers toward the left. Only to see a boat already parked there. Axel immediately cuts the engine and ducks inside the boat, then peaks out and does a careful survey of the surroundings. Axel jumps out. Looks around suspiciously. Takes another look at the boat.]

Axel [thinks] Looks expensive and … new.

[Sighs and enters the manufacturing facility.]

[Ines has a frown on her face the entire time. Looking down at the floor.]

Mabel: I need to get away, if I see one more test or worksheet due on Monday, I'm going to puke.

Landry: Like, maybe we get Biology credit for visiting a national park. We're gonna take pictures anyway.

Mabel: Makes you wish they would replace all the homework with something actually useful.

Zoe: Yeah, but the last time someone tried that-

[Cuts herself off.]

Ines: What?

Mabel: What?

Zoe: Oh, nothing.

Landry: Yeah, nothing

[Mabel drags Ines onscreen.]

Mabel [creepy smile] Oh really, say that again.

Landry: It's nothing

Ines: [monotone] That's a lie. Your gaze went to the upper left corner of your vision. You're creating a false image in your mind. Your breathing increased and you tensed your neck muscles.

[The girls instinctively touch their necks.]

Mabel: That's my detective.

[Gives Ines a hug.]

Girls: Creepy

Zoe: [calls back] Are you guys coming or what?

Landry: [to Ines] Yeah, we need to get you hiking boots.

Ines: I don't think they found my observations "interesting".

[Axel is stealth crouched through the break room when he hears sound effects and people talking. He realizes what's going on, standing up furious, and walks through the secret entrance into the room.]

Axel: Ethan, what did you do this time?

[Turns around the corner to enter the room and the first thing he sees is Hainer, Conner, Disc, and Korey sitting on the couch they had found in the facility's break room, playing Super Smash Bros on the massive monitor Axel and Ethan had dragged over last week. Both were on the second ring in the room instead of the desks that had been there. Conner is his drab grey long sleeve shirt and grey kakie pants attire.

Hainer, Korey and Ethan are in their Dark blue and Yellow jerseys having just come from their shortened soccer practice. The two new boys both have brown hair, but while Hainer is lanky with pinched eyebrows, Korey is built up like a tree, stocky, and a good head in height over everyone else.

On the ground floor above the couch, Ethan pops up from one of the office chairs they had dug out of the pile of wreckage blocking the hallway in the back of the room.]

Axel: I… why are they they here when, without saying anything! [thinking] Should have made a plan for something like this. I never anticipated this level of stupidity.

Ethan: They came on the boat.

Axel: Whose boat?

Ethan: [mouth full of snacks] Oh, yeah. [chew] I bought a boat.

Axel: Why did you buy a boat?!

Ethan: Because my not-mum parent is loaded. You know this.

Axel: [thinking] I'm not going to get anything out of him while he's like this. [speaks] i just wasted how many hours trying to justify why Esports club needed a boat to the student council.

Ethan: You should have said so.

Axel: I did. This has been for the last week.

Ethan: A whole week?! You really need to get better at making me pay attention. [He says while his full attention is on the game.]

Axel: You said you pay attention.

Ethan: I choose to pay attention. At what is the question. Also, don't the school rental boats have trackers in them?

Axel: They … damn it.

Ethan: Well if we're already going to RTTP, then there's nothing wrong with showing this place off.

Axel: This place isn't a club for parties.

Ethan: Oh, then what is it for? Taking over the world? What does that mean again? You were kinda light on the details with the whole MIB boot on our necks.

[They are exiting the store with the sign Re:Creation" filled with outdoor gear in the window display. The girls are walking past the closed electronic store with TVs running in the window. They are just about to leave when the word "Deckard Incident " can be hear above the crowd. Mabel whips back and is glued to the TV.]

Reporter: …The clean up of the Deckard Incident has exceeded the Disaster control center's predictions back in May. Here is one of the many places in cities hit hardest around the world. These "Dead zones" as people have started to call them, have had reconstruction delayed yet again. The damage is too widespread and unstable to begin repair efforts.

[Show picture of downtown and zoom out to show entire city. Downtown is completely destroyed with smaller spots of ruin dotted around the city.]

Reporter: Yet another building has collapsed causing streets to cave in. The DCC in response said quote "if we are to make any effort to provide stable and long lasting structures, it must be from scratch. After the previous foundations have been replaced."

Zoe: They can't actually do that? My family is all in my brother's place. We've been waiting months to go back for the stuff we left back in our apartment.

Mabel: You can't replace anything?

Zoe: No, our accounts were deleted along with everyone else. Nothing in our bank. Starting from scratch. Why do you think we're going hiking?

Laundry: [hurt] I thought you liked hiking.

Zoe: I do. And because the theaters have been showing reruns for 5 months. Not that I could pay for one.

Mabel: We had 9/11, now we have 5/5. Did you hear how gangs and convicts are holing up in the dead zone.

Zoe: You really believe that?

Mabel: Why not? All the cameras were fried in the Deckard Incident. It's no mans land there.

Landry: That's just tragic.

Ines: It's just how the way the world is now.

Reporter: We are advising citizens to stay out of the unstable landscape and possible collapsing roads.

Mabel: I think she means criminals or squatters looting all the buildings.

Laundry: Well, of course, but they can't say that on TV.

[Conner wins the Smash Bros match.]

Connor: Good game.

Hainer: Of course Gray wins. Now is the VR ready?

Disc: We have been waiting for forever. You owe us from when you took the VR headset away. You had this entire place to yourself. What did you need it for?

Axel: [irritated] Fine! It was necessary. If I didn't figure out I can remote control objects in the virtual world from the real one, I couldn't have made this.

[Dramatic gesture and tap on the keyboard.]

The TV didn't change. It still displays Smash Bros.

Axel uses the remote.

Axel: I don't get it, it's on the right channel… You switched the inputs with technomancy didn't you?

Ethan: No [red flash from behind the TV] Yes.

[The screen goes black, then up pops a visual of the area around the tower from the last episode. The area around the tower is in the middle area of the plasma throne where they deactivated the tower last time. The tower is inside a fortress with bridges and baloneys around the raised tower in the center, now with a ramp curling around the dias leading up to it.]

Ethan: What? It's faster to just switch the inputs around than unplug a cable.

[Axel pushes enter.

At the tower, in spawns an avatar. Ethan's avatar. Except it has a helmet that covers his entire head with a red, curved visor in the EVA style that takes up most of the front of the helmet.

Axel unslings his backpack and reaches in to pull out a wired Xbox controller. He plugs it into the monitors and throws the controller end down it to Ethan on the couch below. Ethan touches the joystick. His avatar sidesteps on the screen.]

Ethan: No way! We don't even have to go to the Annex? What's the control scheme?

Axel: Bumper jumper. Shooting, switching weapons, interacting, and grenades are standard, but I couldn't figure out how to attach your technomancy ability.

Ethan: You created this in 5 minutes?

Axel: I created this in how many hours the last few nights trying to figure out a way for us to deactivate the towers without skipping class. [close up on Axel's baggy eyes]

Hainer: Why would you want that?!

Axel: [misunderstands Hainer's question.] All I did was make it so your avatar is controlled by your controller instead of your brain. It's just a more advanced version of the probe I used with the VR set.

Ethan: I thought you couldn't program.

Axel: [pinches his nose and leans on the chair. rambling] I couldn't, but I've been learning from cobbling together code I found on the internet, especially this magical website called Stack Overflow. All of this stuff, switching what controls a character, is standard in most game engines. I learned enough C++ to figure out that's not what the supercomputer ran on, so I reverse engineering the computer language the supercomputer ran on, realized it was similar enough to Java so I switched to learning that the past week and … you guys want to play. I'll set up 4 more controllers. You can play as either my avatar, this girl Innet or Ethan's.

[Axel dumps out the contents of his backpack onto the chair. He has thumb drives, loose leaf paper. Several external hard drives and multiple types of cords for his phone so it could connect to anything he needed. Axel picks up 4 wired controllers all of different types and unreels them down to the couch on the second ring. Axel scoops everything else back into this backpack, detaching a roll of duct tape from the chair and back into the backpack before closing it.

Four versions of Ethan's avatar, each with a different visor color, spawn in.

Axel gives them a look.]

Disc: What? Yours looks hard to use.

[While the camera is on the avatars Team EXO is controlling on the Annex, everyone's head just nods up and down instead of talking.]

Ethan: HAHAHAHAHA. Hey, I'm going in for real.

Axel: Scanner on the left. [to Ai] Thank you for not letting anyone get into the scanner.

Ai: I just didn't want to give you trouble. So, I waited until you got here to hear your opinion.

[Ethan is virtualized. The other Team EXO members look over.]

Connor: [gray visor] Obelisk gets a face. Everyone on him.

Korey: [yellow visor] It's a face off!

Hainer: [pale orange visor] Winner keeps the skin.

Ethan: Nono Snowden, [fires a couple of warning shots at the others] everyone on Gray for using Cloud.

Korey: Is there a dance emote?

Axel: No, Mr. Up, I did not make dance functionality before the combat ability.

Disc: You can't dance on robot bodies?

Hainer: Boo, subpar experience. Get your priorities in order.

[Inside the tower, gun shots and explosions can be heard in the background.]

Ai: Hey, I could just stay back here-

Axel: No, you have to be on the front lines to use Code Lyoko on the tower.

Ai: Oh. [sad. Perks up] But that doesn't mean I can't use them now.

[In the tower, Ai pulls up a holographic keyboard.]

Ai: If I am going to be on the front lines, I better start practicing until I'm unstoppable.

[A 6th Ethan avatar with a white visor spawns and is immediately kills by several streams of gun fire.]

[All of Team EXO starts shooting each other with Ethan's master rifle. They all take cover from each other on the baloneys over looking the tower room, from behind the dias with the tower, from the hallways leading from the central room in the fortress up to the baloneys. Then they all start chasing each other down before taking cover again repeating the cycle.]

Connor: I died.

[Axel sighs, hits a button and clicks something and another version of Ethan's avatar spawns in at the tower.]

Connor: Thanks.

[Ethan is beating the other five since his avatar is real. He's running, sliding, and throwing hands (hands with a sword attached mind you) while everyone else is stuck in the basic walking animations and firing their weapons. He runs out of ammo for his rifle and reaches for his pistol and -]

Ethan: [looks at his right bracer for the gun] Where did my party party party pistol go?

Disc: Dude you need a better name.

[Ethan grunts in discontent.]

Ai: Oh that's-

[Blown up by a stray grenade.]

Korey: Sorry.

[Ai herself comes out of the tower.]

Ai: Well, you said you unlocked the master rifle right? It replaced your other conduit.

Ethan: So I don't have my secondary gun now?

Axel: I checked. You have technomancy, master rifle, your party party party pistol, and foot bombs. Because he got the master rifle, it replaced the pistol's equipment slot.

Ethan: Why can't I have all the things. Don't we have inventories?

Ai: Oh that. Yeah you're limited to three equipment slots. Did I not explain how data is stored on your avatars?

Ethan: What was I doing when we first met?

Ai: Was?

Ethan: [Ethan aim his rifle at her] Git on with it.

Ai: SOOO, when the three of your first virtualized, three pieces of equipment are generated for each of you. There are three types. Conduits, Developer Tools and Developer Abilities. You're guaranteed at least one conduit. Conduits are how you're interacting with the world. And your tools are just powerful objects you can use, but they're usually less durable and can be destroyed after one hit. Like your foot bombs. Your technomancy is an ability-

Ethan: What if I want the pistol instead of my rifle.

Ai: You should be able to switch manually from the real world or at a tower. That's the only place I've seen with an interface.

[Ethan runs past her.]

BONK

[Ethan bounces off the tower surface instead of walking through like Ai did.]

Ethan: Ow. How-

Ai: Be calm. Try putting away your weapons and think non-aggressive thoughts.

BONK BONK BONK

Connor: He's going to be a while.

[Ines exiting a magic store with a pack of special paper in her hands. She tucks it away into her sweatshirt pocket.

Landry is buying a new hat. She takes out a card to pay.]

Cashier: We only take cash right now. We should have a Salujax reader installed soon.

Zoe: Here. I have a Salujax card.

Cashier: If you give me the number, I can retrieve your account that way.

Ines is looking at the girls in the Re:Creation store. She is about to follow after them when…

[Attendant with the store uniform stops her.]

Attendant: I'm sorry, we can't have you in here. You actually have to have a purpose here. If you're just going to hang around, just leave.

Ines: I … I'm with them.

Attendant: We can't have you hurting anyone.

Ines: I'm not… [runs off]

[Zoe notices and walks to the attendant.]

Zoe: Did she say where she's going?

Attendant: No. I asked if I could help her and she left.

[Ines is running when a familiar black suit with blond hair grabs her shoulder.]

Rinzler?: Why are you trying to get close. You let her get stabbed. You're just going to lose them again. Go back to your room where you can't bother anyone.

[Ines runs out of the crowds and into a hallway to the loading dock portion of the mall. She's pale and trembling. She spots the detention teacher, Mr. Frosch.]

Ines: [fed up] Fine, I get it. I shouldn't have tried to get close. Just leave me alone!

[Frosch grabs her arm.]

Ines: Stop! Where's the tell?

[Blue Sparks fly. His eyes shift into a familiar pattern.]

Ines: Huh?

[She's yanked into the shadows.]
