Chapter 1: A New Beginning

As the sun rises over the horizon, casting a warm glow across the quiet neighborhood, Athrun Zala, the Head Engineer of ZAFT Corporation, wakes up to the sound of birds chirping outside his window. It's a new day, filled with endless possibilities and the promise of a fresh start.

Athrun stretches, feeling the weight of responsibility settle on his shoulders as he prepares for another day as a single father. Ever since his wife passed away, he's been navigating the challenges of parenthood on his own, determined to give his daughter, Mia, the love and support she needs.

With a sigh, Athrun heads to the kitchen, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. He glances at the clock on the wall and realizes that Mia should be waking up soon, ready to start her day.

Athrun stood in the doorway of Mia's bedroom, watching as she slowly stirred from her sleep. The morning light filtered in through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Athrun greeted her with a warm smile as she blinked her eyes open.

Mia yawned and stretched, rubbing her eyes sleepily. "Morning, Papa." she replied, her voice still groggy from sleep.

Athrun walked over to her bed and perched on the edge, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead. "Guess what today is?" he asked, his eyes twinkling with excitement.

Mia's eyes widened and said excitedly. "It is my first day of pre-school!"

"Are you excited?" Athrun asked, unable to contain his enthusiasm.

Mia's face lit up with excitement as she sat up in bed, her eyes sparkling. "Yay! I am excited to meet new friends and learn new things!" she said, her voice filled with anticipation.

Athrun chuckled at her enthusiasm, feeling a surge of pride swell in his chest. "That's the spirit," he said, ruffling her hair affectionately. "I know you're going to have an amazing day."

Mia beamed up at him, her excitement contagious. "Thanks, Papa" she said, throwing her arms around him in a tight hug.

Athrun wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. "You're welcome, sweetheart," he replied, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "Now let's go get ready for your big day!"

And as they headed off to start their day together, Athrun couldn't help but feel a sense of joy and anticipation for all the adventures that lay ahead for his little girl.

As Athrun bid Mia farewell at the entrance of the preschool, he couldn't help but feel a swell of pride watching her excitement for the day ahead. With a gentle smile, he waved goodbye as she disappeared into the bustling corridors, surrounded by other eager children ready to embark on their educational journey.

Turning on his heel, Athrun straightened his posture, the weight of responsibility settling upon his shoulders as he prepared to tackle the day ahead. With purposeful strides, he made his way down the sidewalk, the morning sun casting a golden hue over the bustling city streets.

Athrun was a man of determination and ambition, known throughout the city as one of the brightest minds in the field of engineering. As the head engineer of ZAFT Corporation, one of the leading technological innovators in the country, he was tasked with overseeing the development of groundbreaking projects that pushed the boundaries of possibility.

As Athrun settled into his office at ZAFT Corporation, preparing to dive into the day's tasks, his communicator buzzed with an incoming call. Glancing at the screen, he saw that it was Kira Yamato, a longtime friend and Chief Engineer at Morgenroete, Inc.

"Hey, Kira," Athrun greeted warmly as he accepted the call. "What's up?"

"Hey, Athrun," Kira replied, his voice filled with curiosity. "I just wanted to check in and see how Mia's first day of preschool went. I can imagine it must have been a big moment for both of you."

Athrun's expression softened at the mention of his daughter's name, a proud smile gracing his lips. "It was...an emotional day, to say the least," he admitted, his voice tinged with nostalgia. "Watching her walk through those doors, knowing that she's growing up so quickly...it's a bittersweet feeling."

Kira nodded in understanding, his own experiences as a father shining through in his empathetic gaze. "I can imagine," he replied, his tone sympathetic. "It's never easy letting go, especially when it comes to our children. But it's also a sign that we've done our job as parents, preparing them for the world beyond our embrace."

Athrun's heart swelled with gratitude at Kira's words, appreciating the depth of understanding that his friend offered. "You're right," he agreed, his voice tinged with emotion. "And I know that Mia is ready for whatever challenges come her way. She's a strong and resilient girl, just like her mother."

Kira smiled warmly, a sense of camaraderie passing between them. "She certainly is," he agreed. "And she's lucky to have a father like you, Athrun. Someone who cares so deeply for her well-being."

Athrun's chest swelled with pride at the compliment, grateful for the support and friendship that Kira offered. "Thanks, Kira," he said sincerely. "That means a lot coming from you."

"Oh Hey, Lacus and I was thinking to go to the park this coming Saturday, it has been a long time since we are able to do that. What do you think? Would you and Mia able to join us?" Kira asked excitedly.

As Athrun listened to Kira's proposal, a smile tugged at the corners of his lips. Spending time with his old friend and his family sounded like the perfect way to unwind after a busy week.

"That sounds like a great idea, Kira," Athrun replied, his voice warm with enthusiasm. "We will be there on Saturday."

Kira's voice rang with excitement on the other end of the line. "Fantastic! It'll be a fun outing for the kids, and a chance for us to catch up."

Athrun nodded in agreement, already envisioning the laughter and excitement that awaited them. "That sounds perfect," he said, his anticipation growing. "I'm sure Mia will be thrilled at the idea of spending the day with Tolle, and it'll be great to catch up with you and Lacus as well."

Kira chuckled; the sound filled with warmth. "It's a date then," he declared. "We'll meet you at the entrance of the park at noon. Don't worry about bringing anything – just come ready for a day of fun!"

As Athrun approached the preschool, the weight of the day's responsibilities still hung heavily on his shoulders. The demands of the big project at work had left him feeling overwhelmed and drained, but the thought of picking up Mia never failed to lift his spirits.

As he stepped through the doors of the preschool, Athrun's gaze immediately fell upon the bustling activity of the classroom. His heart swelled with warmth as he spotted Mia among the group of children, her face alight with excitement as she played with her classmates.

"Papa!" Mia exclaimed, her voice ringing with joy as she threw herself into his embrace, wrapping her tiny arms around his leg in a tight hug.

Athrun's heart swelled with love at the sight of his daughter's enthusiasm, and he scooped her up into his arms, lifting her high into the air. "Hey there, princess," he said, his voice filled with affection as he pressed a kiss to her cheek.

Mia giggled with delight, her eyes shining bright with happiness as she nestled into her father's embrace. In that moment, all the stresses of the day melted away, replaced by the simple joy of being together.

Mia's eyes sparkled with excitement, her face practically glowing with joy. "Papa, I want you to meet someone!" she announced eagerly.

Athrun raised an eyebrow, intrigued by his daughter's enthusiasm. "Who is it?" he asked, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.

Mia beamed up at him, her excitement bubbling over. "My new teacher, Miss Cagalli!" she exclaimed, practically bouncing with anticipation.

Athrun's interest was piqued at the mention of this new figure in Mia's life. "Miss Cagalli, huh? Well, I'd love to meet her," he replied, his curiosity growing with each passing moment.

Mia practically dragged Athrun towards the school gate direction, her excitement palpable. "Miss Cagalli, this is my Papa!" she announced proudly, gesturing towards Athrun with a beaming smile.

Athrun saw a woman who exudes confidence and warmth, her medium-length blond hair cascading in loose waves around her shoulders, framing her face with a touch of effortless elegance. Her attractive amber eyes are a striking feature, captivating those who meet her with their depth and intensity.

"It's nice to meet you, Miss Cagalli," he greeted warmly with a smile.

Cagalli returned his smile with equal warmth, her eyes twinkling with kindness. "It's a pleasure to officially meet you, Mr. Zala" she said, her voice soft yet confident. "I'm Cagalli Yula, and I have the privilege of being Mia's homeroom teacher. You can just call me Cagalli"

"Then it is Athrun for you too, Cagalli." Athrun said gently while shaking Cagalli's hand.

As Athrun exchanged pleasantries with Cagalli, a sense of déjà vu washed over him. Suddenly, it clicked – this vibrant, expressive woman was the same person he had observed earlier that morning, captivating the children with her animated interactions.

A smile tugged at the corners of Athrun's lips as he realized the connection. "You're the one I saw at the door this morning, aren't you?" he remarked, his eyes bright with recognition.

Cagalli's cheeks flushed with color at the mention, a sheepish grin spreading across her face. "Guilty as charged," she admitted with a chuckle. "I hope I didn't come across as too...over the top."

Athrun shook his head, a genuine laugh escaping his lips. "Not at all," he reassured her, his gaze softening with warmth. "If anything, you seemed to be having a great time. Mia certainly speaks highly of you."

Mia nodded enthusiastically, her eyes shining with pride as she looked up at her teacher. "Miss Cagalli is the best!" she declared, her voice filled with genuine admiration.

Cagalli's smile widened at Mia's words, a sense of gratitude shining in her eyes. "Thank you, Mia," she replied, her voice tinged with emotion. Turning back to Athrun, she added, "It's moments like these that make this job so rewarding."

As Athrun settled into the driver's seat of the car, he glanced over at Mia, who was buckled up in the backseat with a look of anticipation on her face.

"Hey, Mia," he began, his voice gentle yet excited. "Guess what? We have something fun planned for this Saturday."

Mia's eyes widened with curiosity; her interest piqued. "What is it, what is it, Papa?" she asked eagerly.

Athrun grinned, unable to contain his excitement. "We're going to the park with Uncle Kira, Aunt Lacus and Tolle!" he announced, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

Mia's face lit up with delight at the news, her eyes shining bright with excitement. "Yay! I love going to the park and playing with Brother Tolle!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands together with glee.

Athrun chuckled at his daughter's enthusiasm, feeling a surge of happiness at the thought of spending time with their friends. "I'm glad to hear that, Mia," he replied warmly. "It's going to be a great day."

As Saturday dawned bright and clear, Athrun and Mia eagerly prepared for their day out at the park with Kira, Lacus, and Tolle.

When they arrived at the park, they were greeted by the sight of vibrant greenery, towering trees, and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. The air was filled with the sound of laughter and the joyful chatter of families enjoying the sunshine.

Spotting Kira and Lacus setting up a picnic blanket under the shade of a sprawling oak tree, Athrun and Mia hurried over to join them. "Hey there!" Kira greeted them with a warm smile, his son Tolle is playing nearby with a colorful kite.

"Hi, Uncle Kira! Hi, Aunt Lacus!" Mia exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement as she ran up to them.

Lacus returned Mia's enthusiasm with a gentle smile, her serene presence adding to the tranquil atmosphere of the park. "Hello, Mia dear. It's wonderful to see you," she said warmly, reaching out to give the young girl a hug.

As they settled onto the picnic blanket, Mia found herself seated next to Lacus, who smiled warmly at her. "So, Mia dear, how was your first week at school?" she asked, her gentle voice filled with genuine interest.

Mia's eyes lit up with excitement as she launched into a lively recount of her adventures in the classroom. "It was amazing, Aunt Lacus! We learned all about numbers and colors, and Miss Cagalli read us the best stories!" she exclaimed, her enthusiasm bubbling over.

Lacus listened attentively, her serene expression reflecting Mia's infectious joy. "Miss Cagalli sounds like a wonderful teacher," she remarked, her voice soft and encouraging.

Mia nodded vigorously, a wide smile spreading across her face. "She is! She's the best teacher ever!" she declared, her admiration for her teacher evident in every word.

Athrun couldn't help but smile at Mia's enthusiasm, feeling a surge of gratitude for the positive impact that Cagalli had already made on his daughter's life. "Miss Cagalli must be pretty special if you speak so highly of her," he remarked, his voice filled with pride.

Mia nodded emphatically, her eyes shining with affection. "She's the bestest teacher in the whole world!" Mia then bounded off to play with Tolle, her laughter echoing through the park as they chased after the colorful kite, Lacus, Kira, and Athrun settled onto the picnic blanket, enjoying the warm sunshine and the peaceful atmosphere of the park.

"So, Athrun, how have you been?" Lacus asked, her gentle voice carrying a note of genuine concern as she turned to him.

Athrun smiled warmly, grateful for the chance to catch up with old friends. "Busy, as always," he admitted with a chuckle. "Work has been hectic lately with this new project we're working on at ZAFT."

Lacus nodded understandingly, her expression sympathetic. "I can imagine. You always seem to be juggling so much," she remarked, her admiration for Athrun's dedication evident in her tone.

Kira chimed in, his expression curious. "And how's Mia adjusting to preschool?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with interest.

Athrun's smile widened at the mention of his daughter. "She's loving it," he replied proudly. "She talks about her teacher, Miss Cagalli, non-stop. I think she's found a real role model in her."

Lacus's eyes lit up with interest at the mention of Mia's teacher. "Miss Cagalli, you say? Mia seems to adore her a lot," she remarked, her curiosity piqued.

Athrun nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, Mia absolutely adores her," he replied, a note of gratitude in his voice for the positive influence that Cagalli had already had on Mia's life."

As Lacus, Kira, and Athrun were engrossed in their conversation, a sudden commotion nearby caught their attention. They turned to see Mia waving to another figure not far away from where she and Tolle are at. "Miss Cagalli!" she greets to the figure.

Cagalli waved back at Mia and walked over to Mia and Tolle. "Hi Mia" as she patted her head. "And who is this little handsome kiddo here may I ask?"

"This is my brother Tolle! We are at the park with Papa, Uncle Kira and Aunt Lacus for a picnic!" Mia explained to Cagalli excitedly.

Cagalli smiled brightly and greeted Tolle, "Hi Tolle, nice meeting you today!"

Athrun, Kira and Lacus walked over to where Mia and Tolle are when they saw Mia talking to someone. Lacus gasped in recognition as she saw Cagalli. "Cagalli! I should have known it was you," she exclaimed, her eyes widening in surprise.

Cagalli smiled warmly at Lacus, her amber eyes twinkling with gratitude. "Lacus! How coincidence to see you here today!" she exclaimed and gave her a hug as greeting.

"Lacus, you know Cagalli?" Athrun asked, his voice tinged with incredulity.

Lacus nodded, her expression serene as she explained. "Yes, we've crossed paths a few times," she replied calmly. "We both volunteer at the orphanage downtown."

Athrun's eyebrows shot up in surprise, a smile tugging at his lips. "You do?" he exclaimed, looking at Lacus then Cagalli, his astonishment evident.

Lacus smiled warmly, her eyes shining with pride. "Yes, it's been a wonderful experience. And Cagalli's enthusiasm is contagious. She's made such a difference in the lives of those children." She replied.

Cagalli beamed at the compliment, her cheeks flushing with pride. "Thank you, Lacus," she replied, her voice filled with gratitude. "It's truly a privilege to be able to make a difference, even in small ways."

As Lacus extended the invitation for Cagalli to join them at the picnic area, Cagalli's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, I don't want to intrude," she began, her voice hesitant.

But before she could finish her sentence, Lacus smiled warmly and shook her head. "Nonsense, Cagalli. We'd love to have you join us," she insisted, her tone warm and welcoming.

Cagalli hesitated for a moment, glancing down at the bag of children's books she was carrying. "Well, I was just on my way home after shopping for some books for the class next week," she explained, a hint of uncertainty in her voice.

But Lacus waved away her concerns with a dismissive gesture. "Then all the more reason for you to join us! You can tell us all about your plans for the classroom," she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

Cagalli's hesitance melted away at Lacus's infectious enthusiasm, and a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. "Well, if you insist," she replied, her voice light with amusement.

As Athrun watched Cagalli interact with Mia and the others at the picnic area, a sense of wonder washed over him. He couldn't help but be amazed by her natural charisma and warmth, which seemed to effortlessly draw people to her.

He admired the way she effortlessly connected with Mia, her genuine smile and playful banter bringing joy to the young girl's face. And as he observed her interactions with Lacus and Kira, he couldn't help but notice the genuine affection and camaraderie that flowed between them.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the park, the group gathered their belongings and prepared to leave the picnic area. Mia, her cheeks flushed with excitement from a day filled with laughter and play, clung tightly to Athrun's hand as they walked.

As Athrun made the offer to drive Cagalli back, Lacus, Kira, and Tolle bid their farewells with warm smiles and waves. "Thank you for a wonderful day," Lacus said, her voice filled with genuine gratitude.

Kira nodded in agreement, his expression reflecting the joy of the day. "It was great catching up," he added, his tone heartfelt.

Tolle chimed in with a cheerful goodbye, his eyes sparkling with excitement from their day of play. "Bye, Uncle Athrun! Bye, Mia! Bye, Miss Cagalli!" he exclaimed, his voice filled with youthful exuberance.

As they watched Lacus, Kira, and Tolle head off, Athrun turned to Cagalli with a smile. "Ready to head back?" he asked, gesturing toward the car.

Cagalli nodded, her own smile mirroring Athrun's. "Absolutely." she replied, her voice filled with warmth.

As they drove along, Cagalli couldn't shake the feeling of concern gnawing at her. "Athrun, I hope I'm not causing you any trouble by accepting your offer to drive me back," she said, her voice tinged with worry.

Athrun glanced over at her, a reassuring smile on his lips. "Not at all, Cagalli. It's no trouble at all," he replied, his tone warm and reassuring.

Cagalli's worries eased slightly at Athrun's words, her heart warmed by his kindness. "Thank you, Athrun," she murmured gratefully.

And here is where the story starts when Athrun and Cagalli's paths intertwine.
