Cherished Bonds
Chapter 4: Summer Serendipity
One month has passed since the start of Summer Break. One day while Athrun is staying slightly late at his office to work on the project, his phone rang amidst the hustle and bustle of the office, he glanced at the caller ID and saw Cagalli's name displayed on the screen.
"Hey, Cagalli," Athrun greeted, his voice filled with warmth despite the chaos around him. "To what do I owe the pleasure of this call?"
Cagalli's voice came through the line, sounding cheerful yet slightly breathless. "Hey, Athrun! I hope I'm not interrupting anything important."
Athrun shook his head, even though she couldn't see him. "Not at all. It's always a welcome break to hear from you. How's everything on your end?"
Cagalli chuckled softly. "Busy as ever, but I can't complain. Listen, I wanted to talk to you about something exciting."
Intrigued, Athrun leaned against the wall, giving Cagalli his full attention. "Go on, I'm all ears."
"I was thinking," Cagalli began, her voice bubbling with excitement, "why don't you and Mia come to my hometown for the summer festival? It's going to be incredible, and I'd love for you both to experience it with me."
Athrun felt a smile spread across his face at the invitation. "That sounds amazing, Cagalli. I'm sure Mia would love it too. Let me check my schedule and get back to you, but it sounds like a plan."
Cagalli's enthusiasm was palpable through the phone. "Great! I'll be waiting to hear from you. Oh, and make sure to bring Lacus, Kira, and Tolle along too if they're available. The more, the merrier!"
"Will do," Athrun replied, feeling a surge of excitement at the prospect of spending time with Cagalli and their friends at the summer festival. "Thanks for thinking of us, Cagalli. I'll talk to you soon."
Later that Night
As Athrun stepped into Lacus's home, the aroma of a delicious meal greeted him, and he couldn't help but feel a sense of warmth and comfort. Lacus appeared from the kitchen, her smile radiant as she welcomed him.
"Welcome, Athrun!" Lacus exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I'm so glad you could join us for dinner tonight."
Athrun returned her smile warmly. "Thank you for having me, Lacus. It's always a pleasure."
Just then, Mia bounded into the room, her face lighting up when she saw Athrun. "Papa!"
Athrun scooped Mia up into a hug, his heart swelling with love for his daughter. "Hey there, Princess! How was your day?"
Mia chattered excitedly about her day at Lacus' place, but her attention quickly shifted when Athrun mentioned the upcoming summer festival.
"Mia, guess what?" Athrun said, his eyes twinkling with anticipation. "Miss Cagalli invited us to her hometown for a summer festival!"
Mia's eyes widened with excitement. "Really? Can we go, Papa?"
Athrun glanced at Lacus, a smile tugging at his lips. "What do you think, Lacus? Cagalli had requested me to invite you guys as well."
Lacus nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! She texted me about it as well just not too long ago. Absolutely! It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for all of us to spend time together and experience something new."
Kira, who just got out of shower chimed in, "I've heard great things about Cagalli's hometown festivals. That would be great to experience it right, Tolle?"
"Yesssss! I am so excited!" Tolle's eyes sparkled with anticipation as he bounced on his toes, his energy practically radiating off his.
Athrun looked down at Mia, who was practically bouncing with excitement as well. "Looks like we're going to Miss Cagalli's hometown for the summer festival, Sweetheart!"
Mia cheered happily, her excitement contagious as they sat down to enjoy a meal filled with laughter and anticipation for the adventures to come.
As Kira and Athrun leaned against the balcony railing, the cool evening breeze swept through, carrying with it the gentle chatter of laughter from indoors. They clinked their beer bottles together in a silent toast, enjoying a moment of camaraderie amidst the tranquil atmosphere.
"It's good to see Lacus and the kids having fun," Kira remarked, his gaze drifting towards the window where the faint outline of figures could be seen moving about.
Athrun nodded, taking a sip of his beer. "Sometimes I wonder how she manages to keep everything together."
Kira chuckled softly. "Lacus has always had a way with people, especially kids," he remarked. "It's like she has this innate ability to bring out the best in everyone."
"True," Athrun agreed, a small smile playing on his lips. "She's like a beacon of positivity, always looking out for others."
As they continued to chat, Kira asked Athrun with a gentle but probing question, his tone filled with empathy and concern. "Athrun, it's been four years since Mey had passed away. Have you ever considered opening up to the idea of a new relationship?"
Athrun paused for a moment, his expression reflecting a mix of emotions. "It's not that I haven't thought about it," he admitted quietly.
Kira observed Athrun's expression, sensing there was more to his hesitance. "Is there someone you have in mind?" he asked gently.
Athrun hesitated, his thoughts racing. "Well, there is someone," he confessed, his voice low. "But the circumstances... they're complicated."
Kira nodded, encouraging Athrun to share. "Complicated how?"
Athrun sighed, trying to put his feelings into words. "She's a wonderful woman, Kira. I care about her deeply, but... she's been through a lot too. And Mia... I don't want to disrupt her life any more than it already has been."
Kira listened attentively, understanding the weight of Athrun's words. "It's natural to worry about Mia," he said softly. "But you deserve to pursue your own happiness too, Athrun. And if this woman makes you happy, maybe it's worth exploring."
Athrun nodded, appreciating Kira's perspective. "You're right," he admitted. "I just need to find the right time and approach it delicately. For Mia's sake, and hers."
Kira gave Athrun a reassuring smile. "Trust your instincts, Athrun. You'll find a way to navigate through it all."
As they continued to chat, the evening sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the surroundings.
The day had finally arrived, and Athrun, Mia, Lacus, Kira, and Tolle found themselves on the road to Cagalli's hometown. The anticipation in the air was palpable as they embarked on this journey together, eager to experience the summer festival that Cagalli had spoken so fondly about.
As they drove along the scenic countryside, Athrun couldn't help but marvel at the lush greenery that stretched out before them, punctuated by the occasional quaint village nestled amidst the rolling hills. Mia, seated at the backseat, bounced with excitement in her seat, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the picturesque landscape.
As they continued on their journey, the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape. In the distance, they could see the silhouette of Cagalli's hometown, beckoning them closer with promises of new experiences and cherished memories waiting to be made. With hearts full of anticipation, they pressed on, eager to begin their summer adventure in Cagalli's beloved hometown.
As the car rolled to a stop in front of Cagalli's house, everyone stepped out, stretching their legs after the long journey. The quaint charm of the neighborhood greeted them warmly, with colorful houses lining the street and the sound of laughter drifting through the air.
Cagalli emerged from her house, a bright smile lighting up her face as she welcomed them with open arms. "Welcome to my hometown!" she exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with joy.
Mia dashed forward, wrapping Cagalli in a tight hug. "Miss Cagalli! I miss you!" she exclaimed.
Lacus, Kira, and Tolle followed suit, expressing their gratitude to Cagalli for hosting them for the festival. Athrun approached Cagalli last, a warm smile on his face as he met her gaze.
"Thank you for having us, Cagalli," he said sincerely, his voice filled with appreciation. "We're all looking forward to experiencing the festival with you."
Cagalli returned his smile, her eyes softening with warmth. "I'm so glad you could make it," she replied, her voice tinged with emotion. "This festival means a lot to me, and I'm excited to share it with all of you."
Cagalli's father emerged from the doorway, his warm smile mirroring his daughter's. He greeted each of them with a firm handshake, addressing them by name as he welcomed them into his home.
"Welcome, you must be Lacus and Kira," he said warmly as he shakes their hands. "And Tolle." he gently patted his head.
"Mr. Attha, here is some gift that we had brought for you for thanking your hospitality." Lacus said gently while pointing at the bags at Kira's hand.
"As sweet and considerate as I have been told by Cagalli. Thank you Lacus, you are such a sweetheart" Mr. Athha looked at Lacus gently.
"And, you must be Athrun and Mia." patted Mia's head. Cagalli's father looked at Athrun with a sense of recognition, his eyes reflecting a silent acknowledgment of the gentleman standing before him.
"Hello, Miss Cagalli's papa!" Mia enthusiastically hugged Cagalli's father's leg, her excitement evident in her joyful embrace. Cagalli's father chuckled warmly at Mia's affectionate gesture, returning her hug with equal fondness.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Mr. Athha. Cagalli has told me so much about you. And I am glad to see you looking so well" Athrun shakes Mr. Attha's hand.
"Thanks, Athrun. I am feeling much better these days. I've heard a lot about you from Cagalli too, I must say, I'm impressed by your dedication to your work and your commitment to your family. You're a remarkable man." Mr. Athha said with utmost sincere.
" Okay, okay, enough with the admiration, Dad. Let's head inside and get settled. It's time for some refreshments!" Cagalli said excitedly.
"Alright, alright. Lead the way, my dear. Athrun, Mia, Lacus, Kira, Tolle, come on in!" welcome the guests into their house.
Once they are inside the house, they are welcome by Cagalli's stepmother.
"Everyone, this is my stepmother, Aunt Via." Cagalli introduced her to the guests.
"Hello, it's lovely to finally meet all of you. Welcome to our home." Aunt Via said with the warmest voice.
"Thank you for having us, Aunt Via. I hope we are not disturbing too much with our visits." Lacus said.
"Don't be silly sweetheart, we love companions." Aunt Via gesture Lacus and group to settle down and have the refreshments that are ready on the table.
As Aunt Via busied herself in the kitchen, preparing for dinner, she glanced over at Athrun and Cagalli with a knowing smile. Sensing an opportunity to give them some time alone, she turned to Cagalli with a request.
"Cagalli, dear, could you do me a favor and run to the store to pick up a few things for dinner?" she asked, her tone casual but her eyes twinkling with mischief.
Cagalli raised an eyebrow, sensing Aunt Via's intentions but playing along. "Sure, Aunt Via, I'd be happy to help," she replied, exchanging a knowing look with Athrun.
As Cagalli grabbed her bag and headed for the door, Aunt Via winked at Athrun, silently urging him to follow. "Why don't you go along, Athrun? You could use some fresh air," she suggested innocently.
Athrun caught on to Aunt Via's subtle hint and nodded appreciatively. "That sounds like a good idea," he agreed, rising from his seat and joining Cagalli at the door.
With a knowing smile, Aunt Via watched as they left, secretly pleased to have created an opportunity for them to spend some time alone. As she returned to her cooking, she couldn't help but hope that Athrun and Cagalli would make the most of it.
As Aunt Via recalled the recent conversation she had with Cagalli, her mind drifted back to their heartfelt discussion. Cagalli had asked her a poignant question, one that had stirred up memories she hadn't revisited in some time.
"Cagalli, dear," Aunt Via began, her voice soft and reflective, "living with your father wasn't a decision I made lightly, especially considering he had a daughter. It took a lot of soul-searching and contemplation before I finally made the choice to be with him."
Cagalli had listened intently, her eyes reflecting a mixture of curiosity and empathy as she waited for Aunt Via to continue.
"When I first came into your life, I'll admit I had my doubts. I worried that you, already 10 years old at the time, might not accept me as a part of your family."
Cagalli listened intently, her curiosity piqued by her stepmother's candid admission.
"I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to live up to your expectations," Aunt Via continued, her voice tinged with emotion. "But then I realized that family isn't just about blood ties or biological relationships. It's about the love and connection we share, the bonds we form through shared experiences and mutual respect."
Aunt Via's words resonated deeply with Cagalli, her own memories of their journey together flooding back.
"And you know what, Cagalli?" Aunt Via said, her gaze meeting Cagalli's with warmth and sincerity. "You welcomed me into your life with open arms, accepting me as a part of your family without hesitation. And for that, I will always be grateful."
Cagalli smiled, a sense of gratitude and appreciation washing over her as she realized the depth of their connection.
"Thank you, Aunt Via," she said softly, her voice filled with emotion. "For being a part of our lives, for loving us unconditionally, and for always being there for us. Cagalli had nodded thoughtfully, her expression one of understanding as Aunt Via spoke. It was clear that she respected and admired the strength of her stepmother's love for her father and for her.
"So, you see, Cagalli," Aunt Via continued, "sometimes love requires us to take risks and make sacrifices. But in the end, it's all worth it when you find someone who truly means the world to you."
Cagalli had looked at her with gratitude shining in her eyes, and Aunt Via knew that her words had brought her comfort.
Aunt Via continued the conversation, her tone warm and understanding. "Is this about the Athrun that you've been talking about?" she asked gently, knowing that Cagalli had confided in her about her feelings for Athrun.
Cagalli hesitated for a moment, her cheeks flushing slightly as she nodded. "Yes, it's about Athrun," she admitted, her voice soft but earnest. "I... I think I might have feelings for him, Aunt Via. But I don't know if it's the right time to pursue anything, especially with everything going on."
Aunt Via listened attentively, her expression thoughtful. "Love has a way of finding its own time, Cagalli," she said reassuringly. "And sometimes, it's worth taking a chance on even when things are uncertain. If Athrun makes you happy, if he brings light into your life, then perhaps it's worth exploring those feelings."
Cagalli nodded slowly, her mind swirling with conflicting emotions. "I just don't want to complicate things, especially with Mia and everything," she admitted, her brow furrowing with worry.
Aunt Via smiled gently, placing a comforting hand on Cagalli's shoulder. "From what I have heard from you about the little princess, she adores you very much." she said softly. "And if Athrun's happiness is part of it, then I'm sure she'll understand."
Cagalli sighed, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders at Aunt Via's words of encouragement. "Thank you, Aunt Via," she said sincerely. "I appreciate your support and advice more than you know."
Aunt Via smiled warmly. "Anytime, dear.
As they walked along the quaint streets, Athrun and Cagalli fell into an easy rhythm of conversation, catching up on each other's lives after their month apart.
"So, how have things been with work?" Cagalli asked, her voice filled with genuine interest.
Athrun sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Busy, as usual," he admitted. "We've been working on this new project, and it's been pretty demanding. But I can't complain. It's all part of the job."
Cagalli nodded sympathetically, understanding the pressures of Athrun's career. "Well, just remember to take care of yourself too," she said with a small smile. "You can't work yourself too hard, you know."
Athrun chuckled, appreciating Cagalli's concern. "Thanks, I'll keep that in mind," he replied. "But enough about me. How about you? How's everything been?"
Cagalli's expression brightened as she launched into tales of her adventures during the past month – from her helping out for the festival's preparation to her father's improving health.
Listening to her animated storytelling, seeing the sparkle in her eyes as she recounted her adventures and experiences, Athrun found himself captivated by her once again. There was something about the way she spoke, the way she moved with such grace and passion, that drew him in and left him yearning for more. It had been a month since they last saw each other, and in that time, he had come to realize just how much he had missed her presence in his life.
As the summer festival approached, Cagalli was bubbling with excitement. This was her chance to share a piece of her hometown with her friends, and she couldn't wait to show them all the wonders of the festival.
With a beaming smile, Cagalli led the way through the bustling streets, her steps light and sure as she navigated the crowds with ease. She pointed out all the sights and sounds of the festival, from the colorful stalls selling traditional snacks to the lively performances happening on every corner.
Lacus, Kira, Athrun, Mia, and Tolle followed closely behind, their eyes wide with wonder as they took in the vibrant atmosphere around them. They laughed and chatted excitedly; their spirits high as they immersed themselves in the festivities.
Cagalli made sure to stop at all her favorite spots, guiding her friends through the maze of stalls and attractions with the expertise of a seasoned local. She shared stories and anecdotes about each place they visited, her passion for her hometown shining through with every word.
As the day wore on and the sun began to set, Cagalli led her friends to the heart of the festival, where a grand stage had been set up for the evening's entertainment. They found a spot to sit and watch as dancers took to the stage, their movements graceful and hypnotic against the backdrop of the setting sun.
As Athrun hoisted Mia onto his shoulders, her giggles filled the air, her eyes sparkling with excitement as she eagerly awaited the start of the performance. Meanwhile, Kira did the same with Tolle, the two boys grinning from ear to ear as they looked out over the bustling crowd.
With Mia and Tolle perched high above the crowd, they had the perfect view of the stage, and they couldn't contain their excitement as the music began to play and the dancers took to the stage.
As Athrun and Kira stood side by side, watching their children's faces light up with joy, they shared a knowing smile. It was moments like these that made all the hard work and long hours' worth it—the chance to see their children happy and carefree, surrounded by the magic of the festival.
Meanwhile, Lacus and Cagalli sat nearby, their voices mingling with the sounds of the crowd as they chatted and laughed together. As Cagalli and Lacus chatted, Cagalli found her gaze wandering in Athrun's direction every now and then. Each time she looked, she couldn't help but notice how he interacted with Mia, how he laughed with Kira, how he seemed to effortlessly fit into their group.
There was something about the way Athrun carried himself, the way he smiled, that made Cagalli's heart skip a beat. She found herself drawn to him in a way she couldn't quite explain, a feeling that had been growing stronger with each passing day.
Lost in her thoughts, Cagalli barely noticed when Lacus paused in their conversation, following her gaze to where Athrun stood. Lacus smiled knowingly, her eyes twinkling with understanding as she caught Cagalli's eye.
With a gentle nudge and a playful grin, Lacus encouraged Cagalli to seize the moment—to take a chance on whatever feelings were stirring in her heart.
With a reassuring smile, Lacus leaned in closer to Cagalli and whispered softly, "Follow your heart, Cagalli. Trust your instincts and let your feelings guide you."
Cagalli's heart fluttered at Lacus's words, feeling a surge of warmth and encouragement wash over her. She nodded in response, a sense of determination rising within her.
Taking a deep breath, Cagalli turned her gaze back to Athrun, feeling a newfound sense of clarity and purpose. She knew that she couldn't ignore the feelings stirring inside her any longer—it was time to take a chance, to open her heart to whatever the future held.
