Jamie Reagan loved being a doctor. Bringing babies into the world was the most beautiful and humbling thing he could do for others. There was of course the 1 percent tragedy of the job, but if he was honest with himself, he'd delivered more healthy babies than critically ill ones. The 99 percent joy is what kept him coming to work every day. Today was no different. He was currently walking into a room of a woman named Erica Jones, who was in labor with a set of twins. He smiled at Erica as she spoke to him.
"Good your here Doctor Reagan! I really need to push!"
Washing his hands in the sink and then drying them, Jamie nodded and reached for a mask, covering his face. Pulling on a pair of gloves, he looked at Erica and gave her a nod and some encouraging words.
"Ok Erica, I see a head. I want you to bear down on the contraction and push. Not too hard. As soon as the head is out, push as hard as you can, ok?"
Erica nodded her head and squeezed her husband's hand tight. She let out a scream as he helped her lean forward.
"This is your fault, Robert! You did this to me!"
Jamie redirected Erica's attention and kept encouraging her.
"You're doing great Erica. The head is almost out. Keep pushing! Push! Push! Almost there!"
Erica shook her head no and let out another scream.
"I can't!"
Erica's husband Robert rubbed her back.
"Yes, you can honey. You're almost there!"
Erica let her head fall against the pillow momentarily. Taking a breath and letting it out, she gave another push. Jamie felt his smile grow.
"Good! The head is… out! I want you to push as hard as you can! Give me two more really big pushes, ok? Push! Come on! You're doing so good!"
Erica let out another cry and gave one last push. She felt a weight leave her and then she let her head fall against the pillows behind her and she started to cry. Jamie held up a screaming little girl over the sheet.
"You have a beautiful and healthy little girl! Here you go mom!"
Jamie quickly cleaned the little girl up and had the husband Robert cut the umbilical cord. Placing the screaming baby onto Erica's chest, Jamie smiled, this is what made his job all worth it. Erica beamed down at the little girl on her chest and put a hand on her tiny back.
"She's beautiful! Thank-you Doctor Reagan! Thank-you for everything!"
Jamie discarded his gloves and mask by the door and gave Erica a bright smile.
"You did great mom. One down, and one more to go. You went back down to six centimeters. I'll be back to check on you in a little while. Get some rest."
Erica nodded and turned her attention back to her daughter who was happily nursing. Jamie had a full plate. There were currently six other women in labor. Three were first time births and the other three, second and third births. Leaving the room, he went out into the hallway and heard muffled cries from brand new babies behind a couple of doors. His phone went off in his scrub pants pocket. Sighing, he reached in and took it out.
"Ok, downstairs to the ER for a crash C-section."
The ride down in the elevator was fairly quick. As he was exiting the elevator, a couple of paramedics rolled in with a pregnant woman who was clearly in distress. There was a blond female officer holding onto one of the side railings of the stretcher, trying to keep her calm.
"You're going to be ok Sierra. You and your baby are going to be ok. The doctors are going to take very good care of you."
Jamie looked straight at the paramedics. Professional mask on, he asked for details.
"What do we got?"
The paramedic on the right side of the stretcher where the female officer was spoke.
"25-year-old female. 36 weeks pregnant. Involved in a motor vehicle accident. Baby's heart rate dipped below 130, is in obvious distress."
Jamie nodded his head and spoke to Sierra.
"Hi Sierra. I'm Doctor Reagan. I'm going to be taking care of you and your baby, ok?"
Sierra looked at Jamie with scared eyes.
"My baby? The accident… Is she ok?"
Jamie could tell Sierra was in a lot of pain.
"Sierra, your baby is in trouble. We'll have to deliver her down here. We don't have time to take you up to Labor and Delivery."
Sierra looked at the officer next to the stretcher.
"Will you stay with me Officer Janko?"
Squeezing Sierra's hand, she nodded.
"I'm not going anywhere. I'll make sure you and your baby are safe."
Jamie looked at the officer and tried not to frown.
"Officer Janko, I can't allow you back in the trauma room, but you can watch from the window if you'd like."
Nodding she stayed where she was at by the window just outside the trauma room watching the whole scenario. As the paramedics wheeled Sierra into the trauma room, a couple of other doctors and several nurses had joined him.
"On my count we move her. One, two, three. Ok. Let's start her on an iv drip of saline. Get her something for the pain. We're going to have to do a crash C-section. This baby's in trouble."
Sierra let out a scream and placed a hand on her belly.
"My baby! Is she ok?"
Jamie leaned over the stretcher and gave her a sympathetic look.
"Your baby is going to be just fine. I won't let anything happen to her or you, ok? We're going to give you something to make you sleepy. When you wake up, you'll be in your very own room up on the fourth floor."
Jamie hoped he could believe his own words.
To Be Continued...
A/N: So, what do you guys think? I got this idea early this morning and thought I could turn it into a fic. Jamko goodness coming up in the next few chapters. Question for you guys: Do you think I should split the chapter between Jamie and Eddie? Or do the chapter in sections showing their POV? Let me know! Thanks!
