"Daddy!"

Jamie woke with a start at the startled cries of his baby girl Cora. Wiping the sleep from his eyes, it took him a moment to register that something was off. Sitting up, he got out of bed and padded towards Cora's room. Entering her room, he swung the door just enough to leave it ajar. Putting the side railing down on the crib, he looked at Cora, her face was bright red from crying.

"What's wrong baby girl?"

Cora continued to cry.

"Owie!"

Jamie became concerned.

"Where's your owie honey?"

Cora had thrown her blanket off and was flailing her arms around. A pit began to grow in Jamie's stomach. Her tiny belly was swollen.

"Oh baby girl, I know, that probably hurts."

Gently taking Cora into his arms, he tried his best to soothe her. Coming out into the hallway, Jamie found Eddie with a very tired look on her face, which quickly turned to concern.

"Jamie? Is she ok?"

Jamie shook his head no.

"Something's wrong. We need to get her to the hospital. Her belly is as hard as a rock. She might have an intestinal blockage."

Eddie now wide awake, looked at Jamie with scared eyes.

"Jamie, how did that happen?"

Shaking his head, Jamie wasn't entirely sure.

"I don't know, but we need to get her to the hospital quickly."

Eddie gripped Jamie's hand and didn't let go, they were waiting for both Doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson an ER doc to finish examining Cora. Eddie whispered into Jamie's ear.

"Jamie, I can't stand this. What's taking so long?"

Jamie whispered back, doing his best to reassure her.

"They are doing everything they can sweetheart. They're going to run some tests and get some blood work done."

Jamie was interrupted by Doctor Clarkson.

"Jamie. Eddie. How has Cora been doing in the last few days?"

Eddie furrowed her eyebrows and thought back.

"She has been really cranky and irritable. Her diaper has been completely dry. She hasn't gone to the bathroom in a couple of days. Could she be constipated?"

Doctor Clarkson sighed and shook her head.

"I would like to get a scan of her abdomen and belly just to see what we're looking at here. We'll sedate her while we do the scan. You and Jamie can be in the room with the tech while he does the scan if you'd like."

Jamie and Eddie both nodded their heads.

"Ed, honey. Relax. The scan is almost done. She's sleeping. She's not in any kind of distress right now."

Eddie nodded but the large scanner in the other room unnerved her.

"Ok."

Jamie squeezed her hand as he looked over at the tech at the computer.

"So, let's see what you've got Dave."

The tech looked at Jamie and nodded slowly.

"Have a look for yourself doc."

Jamie looked at the scan of Cora's belly and sighed shaking his head.

"She's full of stool. We'll start her on a baby laxative. Hopefully that'll clear the blockage. I'll have to confirm with doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson."

Eddie gave Jamie a somewhat puzzled look.

"You mean she's constipated? Why didn't you just say that?"

Jamie sighed.

"Sorry. Yes, it does look like she's constipated. I'll confirm with Doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson, make sure it's not something more serious."

Eddie squeezed Jamie's hand once more and watched through the observation window as a nurse carefully picked up Cora's sleeping form. She just wanted to be with Cora. Patrick was staying with pop while Jamie and Eddie were with Cora at the hospital.

"I just want to stay with her. Nothing is going to stop me from doing that."

Jamie nodded and kissed the side of her head.

"I know that babe. Cora is strong. We'll get her back to her normal chatty self."

Eddie felt the pit in her stomach dissipate somewhat.

"I know. It's just scary seeing her like this."

Jamie understood. His mind kept flashing back to when she'd had that awful cold and a fever that took forever to break. Swallowing hard, Jamie shook himself from his thoughts.

"I feel the same way sweetheart, but she's going to be just fine. I promise."

Eddie sunk into Jamie's arms, and he held her up. He knew this was a lot for her to take in all at once.

"I need to sit down."

Jamie nodded and took her out to the waiting room and helped her sit down.

"I'll get you some water."

Eddie took a breath and tried to reign in her emotions. Cora had gone through so much. She didn't understand why any of this was even happening. But she trusted what Jamie was saying. Looking up, she saw Jamie holding his left hand out with a glass of water. Accepting it, she spoke.

"Thanks."

Jamie seated himself next to Eddie and placed a hand on her upper back and rubbed it as she drank the water.

"Just take a few minutes to process. It's ok. I'm right here."

Jamie and Eddie sat for a while, quietly just processing the details of the scan. But Jamie's wheels in his head were still turning. He was soon brought out of his thoughts about 40 minutes later as Doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson came out into the waiting room, their faces serious. Jamie stayed seated next to Eddie as Doctor Clarkson spoke.

"I confirmed with Doctor Richardson that the scan of Cora's belly and abdomen indicate she's full of stool. We'll give her a baby laxative to see if that helps things along. Has she been asking for juice the last couple of days?"

Eddie shook her head no and held back her tears.

"No, and she loves juice. If I'd noticed this pattern the first day, I would've brought her in when I found out."

Jamie reassured Eddie.

"There was no way to know that Ed. It just happened. The thing is, we may have found a solution to Cora's current problem."

Eddie swallowed and began to stand.

"Can I be with my baby?"

Doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson nodded and led the anxious and nervous couple down the hallway. Cora was in a nursery with other older babies who were sicker than her. She was resting comfortably in a larger open and heated crib. Jamie and Eddie were told to put on personal protective equipment to keep the germs away from Cora and the other babies. They had both washed their hands and were both sitting on either side of Cora's crib. Jamie traced the tiny iv line in Cora's left arm, giving her fluids.

"I am so sorry this is happening to you baby girl. But mommy and daddy know you'll be ok."

A week later, Cora was feeling much better and back to her normal self.

"Daddy! Boo!"

Jamie laughed and peeked around the corner of the couch.

"Boo baby girl."

Cora squealed and her little feet propelled her around the couch and towards the kitchen. Jamie followed behind her.

"Daddy. Ha ha!"

Scooping Cora up in his arms, he checked the baby monitor in his back left pocket of his jeans, Patrick was still sound asleep. Stepping into the kitchen, he found Eddie sitting at the table eating an apple.

"I thought I heard you two playing peek a boo in the living room. Come to see what I'm doing have you?"

Jamie felt a smile come to his face.

"Always babe. Cora has been asking me for her baby puffs. Did we get any more of those strawberry ones?"

Eddie pointed to the middle shelf in the closet next to the fridge.

"Right there. You know, I just thought about it, maybe we should keep tabs on what we feed her, what happened last week might be linked to some sort of allergy."

Jamie nodded and paused getting the container of baby puffs down off the middle shelf.

"I'd already considered that. Since Doctor Clarkson and Doctor Richardson could find no definitive answer to why she had that intestinal blockage."

Eddie finished off her apple and got up, going towards father and daughter.

"I don't want to have to go through this with her again. I felt like all we've gotten lately, is a deal of bad hands of cards. There has to be a light at the end of the tunnel."

Jamie chewed on Eddie's words and added his own.

"There will be."

Hearing his phone begin to buzz in his right back pocket of his jeans, Jamie quickly set Cora in her highchair and answered it.

"Hey Danny. You got the two perps who broke into our house? You want Eddie to come down to the squad room and identify them? Ok. Twenty minutes. We'll be there."

Eddie felt a pit in her stomach.

"Danny found them, didn't he?"

Jamie simply nodded his head in agreement.

"He did. We'll have to drop the kids off at dad and pop's on the way."
