Eddie smiled nervously to herself. She'd dropped Cora off at Frank's and pop's while she went to see Doctor Carollson. Doctor Carollson gave her a sympathetic smile.
"Do you want me to call Jamie down here?"
Swallowing, Eddie nodded.
"Actually, I think that might be a good idea. I want him to be here."
Doctor Carollson nodded her head and went over to the phone on the wall by the door to the exam room.
"Jamie. Hi. Yeah. It's Jenna. Could you meet me in exam room 7 please. I need your opinion on how to proceed with a patient."
Eddie furrowed her eyebrows at Doctor Carollson and spoke up after she hung up the phone.
"Wait till he sees its me. He might go into freak out mode."
Doctor Carollson hid a smirk.
"Your husband isn't very good at hiding his emotions. It's probably why it makes him an excellent doctor."
Eddie nodded and tapped her fingers over her belly absently. It was probably five minutes before Jamie entered the room. He didn't notice Eddie but introduced himself as he went over to the sink and washed his hands.
"Hi. I'm Doctor Reagan. You are?"
Eddie tried to hide a smirk as Jamie looked over at her. He gripped her chart and became concerned.
"Your wife. Eddie."
Doctor Carollson looked at Jamie with a smile on her face.
"Professionalism doctor. She may be your wife, but we are talking business here. She's been complaining of nausea and vomiting times 3 weeks. How do you think we should proceed?"
Jamie looked at Doctor Carollson and gave a small nod.
"Get a urine sample to measure for beta hcg levels."
Doctor Carollson nodded and kept smiling.
"Already done doctor. All we need is an ultrasound."
Jamie flipped through to the third page of Eddie's chart and frowned.
"She's not that far along. You'll have to perform the other ultrasound."
Doctor Carollson nodded and added her two cents.
"Yes. I gave her something to make it less uncomfortable already."
Jamie nodded and took another stool, taking a seat on it. Grabbing for Eddie's hand, he squeezed it first and then kissed it.
"Ok babe. Ready?"
Eddie nodded and Doctor Carollson spoke to Eddie in a gentle voice.
"Ok Eddie. I want you to take a deep breath for me. There you go. Looks like we have very strong heartbeat. Your 7 weeks along. It's too soon to tell the sex yet. The two of you have a very healthy baby. Congratulations."
Jamie pressed his forehead against Eddie's and smiled some more.
"Baby number 2."
She felt her nervousness disappear and it was replaced with pure happiness. Her eyes filled with tears, but she didn't let them fall. Her and Jamie turned their attention back to the screen as Doctor Carollson explained the next steps for the coming weeks of her pregnancy.
"Eddie. I'll reiterate what I've told you before when you were pregnant with Cora. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, get 8 hours of sleep. Desk duty for you very soon. Minimize your stress levels. Exercise, but not too strenuously. I'll set up your next appointment for 5 weeks from today. By then we'll be able to see if you're having a boy or a girl. I'll get you a few printouts of the ultrasound. I'll be back in a few minutes with your paperwork. You can go ahead and get dressed now. Again, congratulations you two."
Eddie nodded her head and watched as Doctor Carollson turned the ultrasound machine off and rolled it away. She saw her remove her gloves and throw them in the trash bin, then proceeding to the sink, washing her hands. After she'd left and Jamie helped her get dressed, he looked her in the eye and spoke.
"7 weeks."
Eddie's face turned a shade red.
"Oh yeah. It was during the huge snowstorm. We were stuck inside for what was it? 4 days?"
Jamie smirked and kissed Eddie's forehead.
"What more could I ask for? I spent some quality time with my beautiful wife. But we also got to spend some time with Cora. I know it's a little early, but what do you think we're having? A boy or a girl?"
Eddie could see a twinkle in Jamie's eye.
"Another girl. Cora needs a little sister to look after. To play with."
Jamie turned serious as he helped Eddie to her feet.
"S how are you feeling? Are you feeling dizzy at all?"
Eddie shook her head and put her coat on.
"Jamie, I'm fine. I know you're in doctor mode right now. But I'm fine. We're both fine. What do you say daddy? Let's go over to pop and dad's and tell Cora the news."
Jamie looked at his watch.
"Well, it just so happens my shift is over. Let's go tell our baby girl she's going to be a big sister."
Jamie scooped Cora up into his arms and tickled her tiny belly.
"Dada!"
He listened to her squeal and then laugh. Giving a laugh of his own, he spun around in a circle for a moment and then stood still. Eddie was the first to speak to Cora.
"Guess what sweet girl, you're going to be a big sister. Mommy is going to have a baby."
Eddie knew that Cora wouldn't quite understand the concept yet, but as soon as the baby was big enough to start moving around, she'd figure something out. This was the next chapter in their journey as a growing family. Whether the road was steep or straight, neither of them knew, but it was their journey, together. As a family.
