"So, Ken, what's the verdict?"
Jamie sat on the edge of an exam table in an exam room nervously looking back at his doctor. He'd only gone to see Doctor Marlson out of a very insistent Eddie. He'd already finished his exam and Jamie was already dressed. Doctor Marlson looked at Jamie and gave him a smile.
"You have nothing to worry about Jamie. It's just a bruise. By the way, you never told me how you got that bruise."
Jamie let out a sigh of slight relief.
"So, nothing is out of place? No damage?"
Doctor Marlson shook his head no.
"Nothing is out of place and no damage. Now quit dodging my question. How did you get that bruise?"
Sighing again, Jamie felt slight heat come to his cheeks, but he didn't know why.
"My daughter accidentally kneed me. She was excited because it was her birthday and she jumped on the bed and her knee just happened to land on the family jewels."
Doctor Marlson did his best not to wince, but as a guy he couldn't help it.
"Sorry. But like I said Jamie, it's just a bruise. It'll heal. I'd hold off on being intimate with the wife for a few days until it heals."
Jamie shook hands with Doctor Marlson and grabbed his coat.
"Thanks Ken. I was worried there for a few minutes."
Doctor Marlson gave Jamie a sympathetic look.
"It's always good to get the official diagnosis."
Relief. Jamie felt relief wash over him as he exited the exam room. Mara saw him and got a concerned look on her face.
"Doctor Reagan? Are you alright? I just saw Doctor Marlson come out of the exam room before you did."
Jamie tried to hide the fact that he was limping.
"Hi Mara. How are you? I'm doing perfectly fine. Ken's my personal physician. Just a routine exam."
This seemed to appease Mara's curiosity. Her eyes lit up and she walked and talked with him.
"You should've been there for this amazing delivery this morning. You think that 13-pound baby girl we delivered was one for the books, try delivering this little boy who was 14 pounds and 2 ounces. He tipped the scales. The mother was 6 foot 6 inches."
Jamie raised his eyebrows.
"Well, that is the first baby to tip the scales at 14 pounds in this hospital. What's next? We add a 15 pounder?"
Mara shook her head.
"Not unless the mother has some sort of metabolic disorder. Today has been really good. I'm glad everything is good with you. When are you coming back to work? I like working with Doctor Lancaster, she's great."
Jamie sensed a 'but' in the conversation coming.
"But what?"
Mara sighed and shook her head.
"She likes her trays arranged differently from the way you like them. She puts the bulb syringe, the scissors, the o-silk nylon thread, and the scalpel as if she were setting up a dinner setting for a three-course meal."
Jamie eyed Mara and nodded.
"Well, that's one way to organize. She's probably used to organizing that way. I'm sure she learned it from someone, or she just prefers it that way. If you must know, I'm coming back on Wednesday next week."
"Ed! I'm home!"
Eddie came down the stairs with a smile on her face.
"Good your back! We have my appointment at the hospital where you just came from."
Jamie put a hand over his face.
"That's right babe. Hey, where are the kids?"
Eddie waved a hand at Jamie and grabbed for her jacket, and reached for his hand, practically dragging him out the door.
"They're with pop. Come on. We're going to be late."
In the car on the way to the hospital, Eddie struck up the conversation of how his appointment went.
"So bub? How was your appointment with Doctor Marlson?"
Jamie gripped the steering wheel of the Chevelle.
"Fine. Just a bruise. Even if you get the ok for us to start trying for another baby, I've got to hold off for at least a few days. Doctor's orders."
Eddie nodded, she understood. But it had been a while. Or had it? The couple was quiet all the way to the hospital. Entering the hospital, Jamie and Eddie made their way up to the fourth floor and sat in the waiting room. Eddie bounced her knee up and down nervously. Jamie put a hand on it to stop its nervous bouncing.
"Hey babe. Relax. Everything is going to be just fine. You have nothing to worry about."
Jamie put a smile on his face as he saw Mara approach them.
"Ok Eddie. We're ready for you. You have nothing to be nervous about. Everything will be just fine."
Jamie took Eddie's hand and squeezed it, walking hand in hand together into the exam room.
"Doctor Anderson will be in, in just a few minutes. While we wait for her, let's get a set of vitals on you."
Eddie stayed still as Mara took her blood pressure and her temperature. As Mara finished with Eddie's vitals, Doctor Anderson stepped into the exam room, washing her hands. Smiling at Eddie as she dried her hands, sat down on the rolling stool and Mara wheel the ultrasound to her. Eddie squeezed Jamie's hand one more time. Jamie felt like he was holding his breath watching the screen in front of him. He listened as Doctor Anderson spoke.
"Everything looks good. Almost no scarring. You've pretty much healed Eddie. Hold on a minute. Oh my. We've got a heartbeat. You're pregnant. Congratulations."
Jamie and Eddie could only look at each other for a moment. Eddie felt heat come to her cheeks and they turned slightly pink.
"Oh yeah. I remember now."
Jamie chimed in with his two cents.
"Oh yeah. During that really bad rainstorm."
Doctor Anderson gave a small smirk but quickly hid it and put her professional face on.
"Well, I think congratulations are in order. Times three. You're eight weeks."
Jamie got a shocked look on his face. Eddie's eyes grew wide.
"Trip… Triplets?"
Doctor Anderson nodded and shut off the ultrasound machine while Jamie helped Eddie clean the excess gel from her abdomen. Jamie looked Doctor Anderson in the eye.
"With the strange shaped blood vessel in her uterus, is this pregnancy considered high risk?"
Doctor Anderson shook her head and went to wash her hands at the sink.
"We'll monitor her throughout the entire pregnancy. The two of you have three healthy babies. I'll have Mara schedule you an appointment for your next checkup."
It was later that afternoon when Jamie and Eddie walked into Frank and Henry's house. It was oddly quiet, other than some noise in the kitchen. The couple walked into the sunroom to find Henry asleep with both Cora and Patrick asleep on the couch and in the playpen. Smiling, they quietly walked through and into the kitchen, only to find Erin cooking. She turned when she heard them enter. Jamie spoke first.
"Hey sis."
Turning down the stove she looked Jamie in the eye and sat down at the kitchen table.
"You look like you want to tell me something. Spill buster."
Jamie looked at Eddie.
"Should we tell her? Or wait and tell everyone at the table?"
Eddie shook her head.
"If the food is mostly done, we can wait."
Erin gave a small, dissatisfied sigh and nodded her head.
"Spaghetti is done. All that needs to be done is have the table set with the food. Oh. I hear pop and the kids are up."
Jamie looked up to find Cora running towards him a full speed.
"Daddy!"
Smiling, he picked her up and spun her around, then setting her down on the ground again. Once the table in the dining room was set up with the food, everyone sat down and the prayer was said, Jamie took the moment to break the ice.
"Before we dig in, Eddie and I have something we'd like to share with all of you. I think we may need a bigger table for Sunday dinner. It might not fit all of us."
Eddie and Jamie silently exchanged a loving look and then Eddie took the ultrasound photo from her pocket and unfolded it. She passed it down the table. It was Danny who was the first to speak when he looked at it.
"Triplets? Wow. That's gonna be a lot of diapers kid."
Jamie nodded.
"I know that. We're planning accordingly."
The rest of the family gave their congratulations and Eddie once again felt very loved. The Reagan's were the family she wished she'd had growing up.
