Elsa spent all her life trying to control her powers so she never hurt anyone again like she had with her sister all those years ago, but in one small incident. One moment of frustration ruined everything she had been working for. She had just froze all of Arendal, everyone became scared of her, and then she ran from her responsibilities, her sister, her kingdom, and the root of all of her problems. She had never been so reckless before. Conceal don't feel has been her montra for most of her life, but she never liked the way that made her feel. Now she is traveling lost up a mountain in a blizzard with no idea what to do next. Elsa just looks at her hands and does something she has been dying to do for a long while. She slowly begins to take off her gloves and tests her powers since there was no one to get hurt. She just lets loose. Elsa felt every weight of anxiety and insecurity lift off her chest like the weight of the world was no longer her problem. Letting her hair down, literally. Changing her style and her dress. Wanting to feel anything different than the scared girl afraid of being called a monster. Raising her hands up and thinking about what she wanted she built an ice bridge and castle.
The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen
A kingdom of isolation
And it looks like I'm the queen
The wind is howling like the swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in
Heaven knows I tried
Elsa blasted ice magic all through the mountain making her castle bigger and bigger with new rooms, walsl, and floors. Making an ice giant guard to protect her new home and just dancing in the whirling snow. For the first time she felt free. Free to herself and she really wanted to get to know that person. The person who she had thought was lost so long ago.
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn't keep it in, heaven knows I tried
Don't let them in, don't let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know
Well, now they know
Elsa was creating snow flurries left and right enjoying her powers for the first time since she and Anna made that snowman together. This had given Elsa an idea to recreate the sister's beloved snowman once again, but little did she know that he came to life and went off to find Anna and bring her here. Elsa knew that running from her life was never the answer, but she truly thought that everyone would be better off without her and she practically lived alone all her life, so she wouldn't have to worry about too much.
Let it go, let it go
Can't hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don't care what they're going to say
Let the storm rage on
The cold never bothered me anyway
The snowman found Anna and her new friends and they made their way to the ice castle to hear the runaway queen singing out so loud that it rang through the mountains. They soon had to face the giant ice monster in order to get to the door. They almost fell off a cliff but somehow they made it past the ice covered snow beast and into the new home of the estranged queen to hear the beautiful voice of her majesty.
It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me can't get to me at all
It's time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me
Up here in the cold, thin air I finally can breathe
I know I left a life behind, but I'm too relieved to grieve
I'm free
As Elsa's voice rang out it caught the attention of something wonderful. A golden little butterfly. Now legend says that a miracle is kept inside and is released to those who truly need it. To find the place they belong; where they are safe and unpersecutaed. Now in no means will it be an easy path, but even an ordinary miracle; one that happens everyday will never give more than you can handle. You just need to be willing to follow that spark.
Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You'll never see me cry
Here I stand and here I stay
Let the storm rage on
Magic always has a price and magic tends to have a way of finding each other so while Elsa made her way through the Ice Castle and a door started to glow a warm yellow light seeped through the palace windows. The light seemed to draw her in light a moth to a flame, when she opened the door a tropic breeze greeted her face. Elsa had never felt anything like this before. The sights, the sounds, and the smells were a new wonder for her to experience. She stepped through, truly leaving her life behind, never looking back.
My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I'm never going back, the past is in the past
When Elsa left, through the door Arendal began to unfreeze. Anna tried to find her sister with the help of the local ice man named Christoff. When Anna found her sister she tride to go to her and follow her through that door but stopped herself when she saw the look on her older sister's face. She looked so happy. Happier than she had been in a long time. Anna that Elsa would never be truly accepted here. Not really. Not even if she was Queen and she was. Anna knew that the best thing for Elsa was that she had to let her go. Even if it broke her heart.
Let it go, let it go
And I'll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand in the light of day
Let the storm rage on
Through the door Elsa found a life she never could have imagined. She was so amazed by everything around. She did not see the strange looks that she was receiving; she was just too enthralled with everything around her. Foods she's never tried, leaving the most incredible smells, hearing the most interesting music she has ever heard. Elsa felt like she has lived more in these few hours than she had in her whole life.
Standing frozen in the life I've chosen
You won't find me, the past is so behind me
Buried in the snow
Let it go, let it go
The cold never bothered me anyway
Everything was so new and exciting that she did not see where she was going and ran into someone wearing green clothes. When she looked up she saw the greenest green she had ever seen. She had apparently run right into a man named Bruno. "I am so sorry. I was not looking where I was going." Little did Elsa know that these people she was now surrounded by spoke a completely different language than she did, but thankfully thanks to the magic of the yellow light she could not speak, read, and understand the language of these people and they could understand her. "No, no, no. It's my fault I was looking down at the ground." Bruno said, looking up at the girl infront of him. She was nothing like anyone he had seen before. She did not look at him with fear or hatred. "My name's Bruno. I haven't seen you around here before." Elsa smiled back at him as he helped her up. "My name's Elsa. I don't really know where here is. I followed the glow from a yellow light that led me to a door that brought me here. I don't think I've seen so many colors before. It's beautiful." Bruno listened to Elsa tell him how she got here and it sounded similar to his papi's blessing.
"Well welcome to Encanto." Elsa heard the word Encanto and instantly she knew that the name fit. "Bruno there you are, we were looking all over for you." Julietta said, too focused on her brother to notice the strange new girl. "Who is this? Pepa asked, not quite sure if she liked this girl or not. "Pepa you're snowing." Julietta said not looking at her sister but still seeing snow fall. "No, sorry that was me. Wait, you have ice powers too." Elsa asked eager and hopeful to have met someone else like her. Pepa was frozen still. She had never met anyone else with similar powers to her either. "Pepa can control the weather with her emotions, Julietta can heal anyone with her cooking, and can see the future." Bruno explained, but said his gift softly, but Elsa still heard. "So you see the future?" Elsa asked, earning a nod from Bruno. His sisters were unease by her at the moment. "So you see what is going to happen." Elsa said. "Yes, but people blame me when things go wrong." Bruno was a little confused about where she was going with this. "But you can't control what happens. It's not your fault. My mother used to say. Never ask a question if you don't want the answer. But I understand where you stand. I was chased out of my home because after spending my whole life hiding my powers I lost control once and everyone became scared of me. Called me a monster." Elsa explained why she left her home. The triplets felt heartbroken at Elsa's confession. "Well I don't think you're a monster."
"Thank you. I don't think you are one either." Bruno smiled at her. Pepa looked at her brother and she had never seen him act like this towards anyone before. "Come let us introduce you to our mama. She will be upset if there was someone new to Encanto without her knowing." Bruno knew Pepa was right, but he was still scared of how his mama would react to Elsa. On the way to Casita Julietta explained how they received their gifts and how Encanto came to be. Also that Casita was alive; they did not need Casita to scare Elsa and she freeze something making a bad impression. Elsa quickly placed her cold hand on Bruno making him stop before they reached Casita. "Wow, your hands are cold." Bruno said. Elsa snapped her hand back holding it in the palm of her other hand. "Sorry." Elsa felt embarrassed not being able to look him in the eyes anymore. "No, I'm sorry. You did nothing wrong." Elsa gave him a sad smile. "Hurry up, you two." Pepa shouted. Both Bruno and Elsa blushed.
Alma was sitting at the table sipping her coffee when her three children came rushing in with a very pale woman. "Mama this is Elsa." Julietta said. Alma did not seem to like this girl, but for the first time Bruno took a deep breath and gained any courage he had and spoke up to his mother. He told her how she came to be here, that she had powers, and that she had nowhere else to go. Alma felt for the woman she did. Elsa bowed to Alma trying to show her respect. "Madame." Elsa looked around at the three who brought her here silently asking for help, because no one told her their mother's name. "Alma." Alma said, seeing the girls struggle. "Madame Alma. I heard what happened to your husband and I have to say that he sounded very brave. I am sorry for your loss. I lost both my parents a few years back. It has just been my sister and I and now just me. I had to leave her so she could have the life she deserves." Elsa said to the woman. Ruler to former ruler. "Thank you my Pedro was a man who fought for all of this Encanto to have a second chance. And it is possible that he might have just led you to us for that chance as well." Elsa smiled. "Thank you." Elsa went straight to Bruno smiling and he smiled in return. Alma saw this and Pepa rushed to her mother. "I think Bruno has a crush." Alma was taken back by this but she approved of this. Maybe Elsa and her powers could be very good for the Encanto after all.
Five years after Elsa and Bruno Madrigal's daughter Mirabel was born, it was her gift ceremony. Little Mirabel was in the nursery waiting patiently with her Abuela who adored her; being the first of hopefully many grandkids. "Abre los ojos, open your eyes." Abuela told her as she adjusted the young girl's glasses that were the same color as her father's ruana. Mirabel looked up at the older woman and saw the legendary candle glowing in all of its glory. "This is where our magic comes from?" The little girl ased excitedly. Little did she know that her parents were standing right outside of the door listening in. Both overjoyed that their daughter was excited for this bardin but at the same time prayed that she did not have to suffer the same fate they had to. By having a gift that nobody understood and everyone feared. They did not want that for her. She should never have to be afraid of what she could do.
Their thoughts were interrupted by Abuela chuckling at the little girl. "Si. This candle holds the miracle given to our family." Bruno looked down to the ground and started to ring his hands due to nerves. Elsa saw this and placed one of her very cold but ungloved hands on her husband's shoulder. He always appreciated this because through the years of just knowing her, her cold actually brought warmth to him and helped calm his frantic nature. It was part of the reason his sisters liked her so much. "How did we get a miracle?" They heard their wide eyed birthday girl ask and Elsa wanted to know as well. In fact she never actually heard this story before and when she looked at her husband he had a smile on his face. It was one of his favorite stories because it was of his father. "Long ago, when my three babies had just been born, your Abuelo Pedro and I were forced to flee our home." Elsa placed a hand over her mouth at hearing this but then felt her husband squeeze her hand in comfort. He understood her distress. "And though many joined us, hoping to find a new home, we could notescape the dangers, and your Abuelo was lost. But, in our darkest moment, we were given a miracle. The candle became a magical flame that could never go out, and it blessed us with a refuge in which to live. A place of wonder."
"An Encanto!" They could hear their daughter interrupt causing the three daughters to giggle at the little girl. Now Elsa understood why this was one of Bruno and Mirabel's favorite stories. She was on the edge of her seat. This sounded like a wonderful bedtime story not actual history but who was she to judge. She came here through a magic door made from a golden butterfly. "An Encanto." The two could hear the elder woman continue. "The miracle grew, and our house, our Casita itself came alive to shelter us. When my children came of age the miracle blessed each with a magical gift to help us, and when their children came of ageā¦"
"They got magic, too!" Mirabel's parents heard her interrupt again, but this time the two hitched their breaths. They really did hope that Mirabel did not hate her gift or more importantly fear her gift or herself. They both knew how awful it was for their entire village or kingdom to hate their powers, making them just afraid to be near the people they loved. It wasn't until the two met each other that things changed. They began to see that they did not need anyone to love them except themselves. You just sometimes need someone to hepl you see it. And they prayed Mirabel will be embraced with this lesson at an early age that took them both an entire lifetime to learn. At least they are trying to, but Alma sadly does not help with this. They could hear her telling their daughter something but Casita was beginning to move them to the viewing area to join the rest of the family. "That's right and together, our family's gifts made a new home a paradise. Tonight, this candle will give you your gift. Mi vida. Strengthen our community. Strengthen our home. Being the first of my three granddaughters to receive her gift. Make your family proud." Mirabel had two younger primas; Isabella and Dolores. They were not five yet, they were just born a year and two ago and Mirabel was so ready to start the new path for the grandkids for them. Not fully understanding what that meant yet. "Make my family proud."
At this time Casita was bouncing an alarm clock on the ground telling Alma and Mirabel that it was time to get going. "Yes, yes. Casita, we're going." The house's antics caused the little girl to laugh making her even more excited. "What do you think my gift will be?" The little girl looked up at her grandmtoher as she walked her to her door. "You are a wonder Mirabel Madrigal. Whatever gift you get we will be just as special as you." Alma said, holding Mirabel's hand in one of her hands and the candle in the other. She may not have walked her three kids to their doors but she felt the need to do so with Mirabel. Bruno saw they change it had caused Alma when she first became a grandma. He was not sure if it was the fact that since both of her parents had powers that it increased the chances for Mirabel to get one but she was a doting Abuela to her. He prayed that she would do better with this generation than she had with his. Please do better. Casita could hear his thoughts and indeed had a plan to do better. The two had reached the top of the stairs and Alma took her position and Mirabel looked over the crowd quickly before looking at her parents for strength. In the crowd she could see her best friend Mariano waving frantically at her as his mother held him in her arms. She gave him the biggest smile before turning back to her door. She reached up and touched the candle Abuela held out. Alma asked the young child if she would use her gift to protect Encanto and Mirabel gave her a nod. Alma took a step back allowing the child to have a clear path to her door. Mirabel nervously wiped her hand on her dress and reached for the door.
But to everyone's surprise instead of a glowing gift like the generation before her had gotten. Her door just disappeared. Mirabel did not understand why she did not get a gift? Why didn't she at least get her own room? Why was Alma looking at her like that? She was hoping her loving Abuela would comfort her but that never came. Luckily her mother came swooping in and picked her up in the biggest hugg possible and she could see Abuela make a bee line to her papi and drag him off somewhere. She could see her Tia Pepa causing a storm and her Tio Felix trying to calm her down. She saw them hand baby Dolores to her Tio Augustine who also took Little Isa and rushed to the nursery as her Tia Julieta ushered everyone out. Elsa followed Augustine to the nursery as he put the crying children to sleep. "Mami why did I not get a gift? Am I not special?" This broke her heart. She was slightly relieved that her daughter did not get a gift. Mad at everyone's reactions and the fact that she didn't get her own room, but at least she did not have the same burden as Bruno and herself. But instead she had unknowingly given a different one to her daughter. She never once wanted her daughter to feel as though she was not special. Augustin could see the panic in Elsa and stepped in. "NO. Mirabel. You are so special. You know even though your mami has a gift, people who marry into this family don't have gifts. Maybe Casita thought you were so special that your impact did not require one."
Elsa was grateful for her brother-in-law as she mouthed a thank you to him which he accepted. "Your Tio is right. Mi vida. See your Papi and I know the challenges of having these gifts and sometimes our greatest impacts are when we don't use them. You are so special. You take care of this family even at five. You remind us that we need to take care of ourselves and each other. You have always been this powerful girl. You remind me so much of my sister." Mirabel knew that she had another Tia. A Tia Anna but she lived far away in a kingdom or at least that's what her mami would tell her as a bedtime story. She loved hearing about her Tia Anna. "Your Tia Anna did so much to take care of our family and home and she had no powers and she did more than I ever could have." Augustine smiled at Elsa. Truth is all of the adults knew of her past and he loved that she was not afraid to share about her sister because that was the kind of thing he thought this family needed to hear. Especially now. "So I'm like Tia Anna, Tio Augustine, and Tio Felix?" Mirabel asked and Elsa was going to say yes but Felix had surprised the two when he beat her to it. "No. You are like your Tia Anna and your Mami. Your Mami was born with a gift in a family with no gift, but your Tia Anna knew that she was the one to help take care of those who took care of everyone else. Can't really do that with a gift." Mirabel was understanding a bit and to be honest she was feeling a lot better. She actually felt a swell of joy to know that she was going to help take care of her family as they took care of the Encanto. That was her role. That's how she was going to make her family proud. She was going to be just like her Tia Anna.
Elsa left the nursery with Felix once Mirabel was asleep she turned to the smaller man. "Thank you. Felix." Felix looked at the pale woman and smiled. "Of course. Goodnight." Elsa let out a small wave. "Night." Elsa headed to her shared room with Bruno who looked beyond stressed. "What's wrong?" Bruno jumped startled when he heard his wife's voice. The look on his face worried Elsa. "Hey what happened? What did your mother say?" Bruno did not respond; he only began to do his little rituals that helped him feel better and more in control over situations he had no control over. Elsa rushed over to her husband and held his hands. He finally looked him in the eyes. "Alma made me have a vision of Mirabel. Elsa I can't show her this vision. I can't show anyone." Elsa saw tears form in Bruno's eyes. "What did you see?" But Bruno would not answer her. "Hey. I know that whatever it is. It is not your fault or even Mirabel's." Elsa said as she lifted his gaze back to her eyes. "You showed me I was more than a monster to be feared because I had powers. I was so scared of myself for so long until I met you. Let me do the same for you." Bruno gave the love of his life a small smile. "You already have, but that is not what this is about."
"Then what is it about?" Bruno pulled out the green slab of glass and on it had a picture of the worried Elsa. "We may know that Mirabel is not a threat but if anyone sees this they wouldn't believe the same thing. Mirabel. She has a destiny infront of her that could either lead her to saving or breaking Casita. I've never had a vision like this before. One that was filled with more than one future." Elsa just smiled at that. "Well that just means she gets to decide, but you're right. We need to protect our daughter, but how?" Bruno sighed. "I was going to leave." Bruno said with no waver in his voice. Elsa's head snapped up and went wide eyed. "No." Was all she could manage to say. With her thoughts running laps around her head she couldn't even begin to figure out what to say. "Elsa I have to. Alma will want to know what I saw. I can't escape that and the more I put it off the worse people will assume the vision was. I also can't show her what I saw." Elsa didn't want to lose her family. Not again. "Why can't we just take her and leave?" Bruno placed a hand on her cheek kissing her lips. She began to let tears run down her face and a small flurry of snow started to land ontop of them. "I could not do that to her. Make her feel as though she was not enough, I am leaving to protect her. I'm not making this decision lightly. It kills me to have to do this but you will be with her. I'll be in the walls. Casita showed me where I can stay. You can visit, but Mirabel can't know where I am. No one can." Elsa nodded into his palm before wrapping her arms around his neck. Sobbing for the possession they were being forced in. She wished that she could stay like that forever or at least for a few more minutes. But they could hear Alma knocking loudly on the bedroom door. "I have to leave now. Get rid of the vision. I love you. Please don't let Mirabel think that I don't love her." Elsa gave him one more kiss on the lips. "I won't let that happen. I love you."
With that Bruno fled into the walls, Elsa smashed the vision, and hid the shards. "Come in." Elsa said, still trying to wipe the tears away from her eyes. Alma marched into the room demanding to see the vision Bruno had. "Where is Bruno? I must see what he saw." Elsa remained silent. A small pit of anger filled her heart. "He's gone." Alma did not seem to understand what she was saying. "What do you mean he's gone? I told him to do something. Now stop playing and tell me where he is." Elsa looked up at her with tear filled eyes. "He left. He's not here anymore and he is not coming back." Elsa said forcefully. Outside of the room Julietta and Pepa were trying to listen to see how they could help their brother, but upon hearing the word Elsa spoke Pepa could not wait to find the answers swirling around in her head. She barged right into the room with Julietta close behind her. "Why would he leave?" Pepa not understanding. "Alma wanted him to see a vision to see what was "wrong" with Mirabel, but he wouldn't because there is nothing wrong with her. Just because she doesn't have a gift she's now somehow broken. He didn't want to have a vision of her for everyone to twist into something and assume the worst of her. So he left because he knew that you would never leave him be about it. He left to protect her." Elsa said, before collapsing on her knees before balling. Alma did not know how to take this information. "So he did not have the vision."
Elsa could not believe what she was hearing. "Your son left because of you and you're only worried about some stupid vision?" Elsa was about to get up, but Julietta and Pepa ran to her and held her. "I am looking out for the good of the Encanto as I have always done. He abandoned his family. From this point WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT BRUNO. Understood." How could she do this? Elsa was about to argue back but Alma left with no room for discussion. Julietta held Elsa doing what she could to calm her down. Pepa could no longer stay there feeling as though Elsa was partly responsible for Bruno leaving. The family became cold towards her after that and Elsa fought harder and harder against Alma. She would not let Alma bully Mirabel or any of her nieces and nephews. As long as she could help it. Things for Mirabel were not any easier being the Giftless Madrigal, but her mami would always stand beside her no matter what. Elsa learned a lot being a parent. She was no longer afraid of people hating her because she had something to fight for. Someone to fight for. She would fight more Mirabel with everything she had.
She would not let Mirabel forget about her father or let her think that he was a monster that didn't love her. Elsa also would tell Mirabel stories of Bruno, stories of Anna, and stories her mother used to tell her when she was little. She knew Bruno could hear her tell Mirabel those stories and she knew that it brought a comfort to him to know that his daughter will grow up knowing that she was loved and knowing that Elsa would do everything she could to protect their daughter. Like he did.
So here is the end of the first chapter to a new story. Stay tuned for more, but the next several chapters will not be taking place in Encanto or even Arendell but in Berk. Come with me to fly dragons and figure out how Hiccup fits into all of this. I hope y'all reading this chapter, and until the next time. Bye-bye for now.
