Chapter Twelve

Complacency and Sin

With a yelp, Subaru's whole world went upside down before he ended up crashing to the ground. He laid there for a few moments, dazed and muttering something about windows and how much he hated them, before someone stood over him, blocking out the Sun from above.

Rem looked down at him in disdain. "You have not gotten any better at this."

Shaking his head, Subaru shot up and scowled. "It's not like I've had to clean windows that were three stories high back home!"

It was nearing the evening of their fifth day since arriving at the mansion. Subaru had improved a little bit in some areas, but found it a little difficult to focus when their ulterior motives for being there were so pressing.

After all, they still hadn't discovered the whereabouts of Emilia, or any trace of her.

"The village kids said they saw a weird carriage weeks ago," Meili had said. She had seemed pretty happy, and got embarrassed when Subaru asked if she was having fun playing with other kids for once.

"I-I tried my best, but it seems like the villagers are really respectful of Mr. Mathers," Otto had reported. He looked tired, and from what Meili had said, the merchant was always trying to make a pretty penny, only to get burnt at every turn.

During times when Subaru was busy working with the maids, Joshua had done his own investigations, but still came up short. In fact, he never even discovered the strange Forbidden Library that Subaru had found. From what Ram told him when he openly wondered about it, it would move to different doorways within the Mansion to keep it safe.

I'm surprised by how… Nice Ram is, actually.

While their bond wasn't exactly blossoming into a friendship, the feelings Subaru had harbored before about the girl had mostly vanished at this point. Likewise, Ram seemed to respect Subaru's willingness to work and fail over and over– But he figured that was because she liked not being the worst housekeeper in the Mansion for a while.

Meanwhile, there was her sister– The girl who seemed to have no interest in conversing with Subaru and the others, and held some sort of anger towards them. He still hadn't figured out what the deal was, and at this point, Subaru just hoped that Roswaal would return soon to break the awkwardness.

Climbing back up the ladder, Subaru started finishing up the window he had been working on, gazing into the reflection of himself within it.

His hair was neat, or as neat as he could get it, at least, and his uniform looked quite good on himself, he thought. Still, there was something about the person looking back at him that seemed… Strange. It was easy to get lost in his duties and this world, but he couldn't help thinking that he didn't deserve it still, despite all the work he'd put in.

I was just a nobody before all of this…

He thought about how Meili stuck with him a lot, and how she seemed to look up at him. Even powerful people like Julius and Ricardo respected him on some level.

If everything goes well… Can I keep working for Anastasia? He wondered. After all, this strange ability he had to Return by Death wasn't much use if he wasn't, well.. Dying. He didn't want it to happen, but if his days in this world became more peaceful at some point, would his whole existence here be pointless?

"Subaru."

The voice suddenly broke into his wandering thoughts and made him nearly fall off the ladder. He looked down, seeing Rem looking up towards him.

"U-Uh… Yeah? I'm almost done."

The blue-haired maid nodded. "I would like to… Speak to you."

That… Probably isn't good, Subaru thought, as he quickly finished up making the window as spotless as he could, before clambering down the ladder and standing at attention.

"What's up?"

Rem got closer, and Subaru tensed up even more. As her face got close to him, he could've sworn he heard the smallest hint of a sniff, before she spoke again.

"In private."

Unsure of what was happening, Subaru backed away and held up his hands innocently. "P-Private? That's– I uh, I have to–"

The intense look in Rem's eyes stopped him. Whatever weird thoughts he was having, it didn't seem like the girl had any intentions to do… that sort of thing with him. Letting out a sigh of relief, he bowed slightly towards her.

"Alright, I'll follow you, then."

Rem nodded, and together, they walked away from the main building towards a small structure on one side of the front lawn, with gray stone and a blue domed roof. Subaru had been there before when being shown how to do proper landscaping, but it brought up rough memories of somehow nearly losing a limb handling shears.

Inside of the small gazebo-like structure, Subaru gazed out at the rustling grass beyond, towards the entrance to the Roswaal Mansion's compound. Taking in the light breeze, he tried his best to not look over at Rem, the girl sitting on one of the seats behind him. The Sun was beginning to fall below the horizon, leaving them in the orange bask of the sunset.

"T-This seems like a great hangout spot," he commented nervously. What kind of stupid line was that?!

After there was no response, Subaru braced himself and spun around, his breath catching as he saw the girl's intense glare on him. She had one hand raised towards him, in a way that painfully reminded Subaru of how Ram had cast spells on him back in the Capital, and her blue eyes that at times looked innocent, were only full of hatred.

"Are you a part of the Witch Cult?"

The blunt question seemed to come out of nowhere. His only real knowledge about the Witch Cult was that they were followers of Satella, but he had never pried much into it, thinking it to be mainly superstitions of the world.

"N-No… I uh, didn't even know they were real," Subaru answered, offering a nervous smile. "I like to think I'm not dumb enough to join a cult–"

Before he could react, something flew from Rem's hand and slammed into his shoulder. Subaru let out a gasp of pain, looking over to see a shard of ice puncturing into him, a light trickle of blood oozing down his arm. He clutched at his shoulder, then glared towards the girl, whose expression hadn't changed at all.

"What… Why…?"

"The only reason you are alive, is because my sister is already going through a lot," Rem stated darkly. "And if you died now, Master Roswaal would not get the meeting he wished for."

"Well, if I'm bleeding out, that won't happen anyways," Subaru retorted, gritting his teeth at the pain in his arm.

Rem seemed to smile ever so slightly. "I can heal you."

The implications of torturing and healing someone made Subaru shiver. "C-Can't you ask questions like a normal person?!"

"A normal… person…?" Rem stood, and Subaru backed up against the stone railing behind him. "You're just like any other Human… Untrustworthy. And your… stench…!"

Subaru's eyes widened. He recalled how Meili had commented on the Witch's scent at some point. Earlier, he was a bit weirded out when he thought Rem had taken a whiff of him, but now it all clicked.

"I-Is that scent…why you hate me so much? Because…I've got no idea–"

Rem moved quickly, her hand on Subaru's neck before he could do anything about it. He gripped her arm, but found that she was much stronger than he could have ever known, lifting him up into the air til only his tip-toes were touching the stone floor.

"Liar."

He braced himself as the girl's other hand grasped the ice spike in his shoulder, pushing it deeper, eliciting a gasp of pain from him.

"Tell me everything you know about them, or I'll make you even more useless," Rem growled.

Subaru wasn't sure what to say, and could only brace himself to take either a ferocious beating, or to get ripped apart based on how strong she seemed–

But luckily, neither had to happen.

Rem suddenly jumped back, releasing him as something flew in from the side, sticking into the stone wall nearby. Subaru slumped down, coughing and rubbing at his throat as someone jumped in front of him, their arms open, facing Rem to defend him.

"You're so lucky that I came back early," Meili said over her shoulder.

Subaru grinned. "I clearly had it… under control."

Rem glared at Meili just as hard as she had to Subaru. The young girl didn't let up however, standing her ground. It wasn't an ideal situation, and he'd like to avoid a fight, so hopefully the inclusion of Meili would bring Rem to her senses—

"Look out..!"

Suddenly, Meili turned and tackled Subaru to the ground as something flew overhead, wiping out the stone walls around them, before being pulled back by a chain and returning to Rem.

"Where the hell did she get that…?"

Subaru and Meili looked to the girl, who was now wielding the morning-star, the handle in her left hand whole her other handled the chain. Behind them, it was clear just how much destruction that spiked ball could deal if it hit them.

"I-I don't know.. She just had it suddenly," Meili said, looking nervous.

"Rem! Just let us all talk about this," Subaru exclaimed. "Whatever the damned Witch Cult is, we have nothing… Huh?"

They both watched as a horn began to emerge at the center of her forehead, glowing and rippling with pink energy.

"You just like any other Human—" That statement earlier had made Subaru think, but now it was all but confirmed.

"She's… a Demon or something?"

As Subaru said that, a smile formed on Rem's face, one not backed by any trace of sanity or happiness— No, it was born of pure rage.

"I'll make you talk," Rem spoke, before lunging at them.

Needless to say, Subaru and Meili booked it, jumping out of the already destroyed structure and continuing towards the Mansion. However, Rem easily moved in front of them, blocking their path. Subaru looked over to Meili, who had another dagger ready, but didn't look too confident.

Even if I'm slowing Li down, could we beat someone like this? Subaru thought. He looked at his arm, the wound bleeding more and more after the icicle had fallen out earlier. I've gotta do something before this goes too far..!"

"Li, I'm gonna do something stupid again, you've got my back, right?"

The girl shot Subaru a confused look. "What do you..-"

Not letting anyone stop him, he broke out into a run, straight towards Rem, the girl tensing up and preparing her weapon.

Please let this work! I've got no damned idea if this sort of magic will do it!

Subaru raised his uninjured arm, sliding to a stop just ahead of Rem as she swung her weapon his way. While it wasn't necessary, he made his hand into a gun shape to try and point his magic in the right direction.

"Nurak!"

Feeling mana being pulled from his Gate, Subaru tried his best to not dampen it like he did in practice. Julius had warned him that using magic in his inexperience might cause an explosion of power that could injured his Gate forever— But now wasn't the time to worry about that.

I'll aim for nullifying her horn! That's gotta be a weak spot— Full power! Let's go!

Subaru watched in horror as the smallest ball of dark, wispy energy with the tiniest crackles of power poofed out from his finger towards Rem, before sizzling out halfway to her. This was exactly as powerful as it was when he held back, so why was it this pitiful when he wasn't trying to stop himself? Was it a mental block?

Dammit Julius—!

He could only watch as the morning-star approached his head. Luckily, Rem seemed to come to her senses a little, pulling on the chain so the ball instead flew down into his side, sending him sprawling away as his bones audibly crunched.

The pain was too intense to even comprehend as he tumbled and eventually writhed in agony on the grass.

These… damned sisters… never… hold… back…!

Gritting his teeth, it took everything for Subaru to rise up a bit, seeing that Meili was approaching Rem, the girl turning to greet her next target. Subaru's eyes widened, imagining the worst outcome possible, remembering those times that Meili had died right in front of him.

If I see it again, can I.. forgive Rem..?

He already knew the answer. He would probably hate the girl and never get a chance to understand what the problem was, and their whole mission might be compromised.

Gotta… stop them…!

Letting out a yell of agony, Subaru managed to move up to his knees, blood pouring from his side, every word he spoke causing pain to ripple through him.

"Rem…! You…You'll… Never kill… The Witch Cult!"

This has to be done, even if it hurts!

"You can't even… kill someone.. as worthless as me!"

I can't see that again, I can't—

"I-If you... Don't kill me... I'll.. I'll kill your sister!"

It worked. Rem ignored Meili and leaped towards Subaru, the young girl surprised and stumbling before redirecting her run towards them.

"S-Subaru! What are you—"

He smiled, realizing he must look insane right about now. Still, dying like this was much better than having to see something he never wanted to see again.

Sorry, Li.

As he looked towards the girl, Subaru could see the anguish in her face. That was much more terrifying than the enraged demon coming at him, and only confirmed what he wanted to happen.

Your hero will never die! I'll—

Subaru's eyes opened, the memory of intense pain resonating through him. He instinctively reached for his side, not feeling anything wrong there, before sitting up and looking down at himself.

I'm… back.

He let out a shaky breath, then watched as Ram entered the room, carrying his uniform in her arms.

"Subaru?"

Looking to his right, he saw a sleepy Meili looking at him with concern. He quickly realized where he had been reset to— Right after Beatrice had drained his mana.

"I'm a-alright," he said shakily. He looked at Ram, watching her put his uniform on the dresser. "

"You have been out for a few hours," the girl stated as she turned to him. "I apologize for Beatrice's actions, sir. This is not uncommon."

Subaru sighed. Having to redo things did get tiring sometimes… But at least he felt in-tact, mentally speaking, even if he felt himself shivering.

A cold hand touched his, and Subaru felt a slight bit of relief at that, not needing to look to Meili to confirm what she wanted to tell him.

"It's alright, I didn't think this would be easy," Subaru told the maid confidently. "Also, just Subaru would be fine."

Ram blinked at him, a bit surprised. "I see, I will try to remember that."

Their conversation had gone like normal, with Subaru forgiving the girl and doing his best to amend any hardships. After Ram had left and Meili went off to her own nearby room, Subaru slid over to the desk beside the bed, managing to get the oil lamp burning, much to his momentary joy.

Then he began to practice his writing, his shakiness eventually fading as he focused on the task.

It was an odd sensation to experience. After dying, his memory was mostly intact, but it was like any muscle memory from before his death had left him. It took a while, but he felt like he was ahead of his previous self by the time midnight came.

No more getting comfy, he told himself as he hopped onto the bed gratefully. I've got a lot to do, and a lot is riding on this week..!

His complacency had gotten him killed, and very well may have gotten others dragged down as well— But not anymore. He had to take action—

And for starters, Subaru was going to impress a certain maid with anger issues.

The next three days, Subaru managed to surpass his limits from his previous life.

Cooking? Subaru had at least mastered the art of not slicing himself to pieces.

Cleaning? Subaru only had two accidents while cleaning the windows and the gardens— Cutting his previous blunders in half.

Service? Subaru had managed to serve Joshua without the boy angrily throwing tea all over him. His brow did twitch a couple of times in resentment at how Subaru did things, but it was an improvement at least.

Most of all, he put further strides towards making friends with the two maid sisters, knowing it would be key to his success.

"Don't worry Rem, I've got that!"

"Hey, I can read that!"

"Can you believe it's such a nice day again?"

Eventually, when Subaru tried to butt in to grab something for Rem, the girl finally seemed to have had enough.

"Do you think I can't do that myself?"

"Hm? Ah, no, I was just uh…"

Rem turned away, and he stopped, realizing he might not have been making as good of progress as he thought.

Am I trying too hard? Shit…

Contemplating what to do, Subaru recalled that it was this night that the girl had initiated her attack on him. It was quite possibly his last chance to come out of the week unscathed.

Now or never, I guess…

Subaru bowed suddenly to her. "I-I'm sorry for anything I've done to upset you!"

There was silence for a moment as he stared at the red carpet at their feet. He wished the awkwardness would go away, but knew it wouldn't be that easy.

"I can tell that you dislike me, for some reason," he continued on. "Whatever I've done, please tell me and I can try to work on it!"

That's right! Talk to me in a more friendly environment!

He wanted to take control of the situation, to quell any worries she might have about his loyalties. If he could do that, then maybe—

Rem walked past Subaru and grabbed the crate that she was about to get before he'd interrupted. As she walked by him again, she spoke softly.

"I do not know what you mean."

Subaru watched her continue on, his mouth agape.

I failed that badly?!

It was all over. Maybe he'd made it even worse this time? If Rem was aware that he knew something was wrong, would she do something even more brash?

Dammit…! It's time for my last move!

Subaru quickly ran over to a random door and flung it open, pointing inside.

"Oh ancient loli, I've come seeking your wisdom!"

Beatrice glared at Subaru from her seat, exactly where she had been the last time he had seen her. For a moment, Subaru was baffled that he'd actually found her again, but then he grinned.

"Heh, looks like my luck's turning aroun— Gah!"

The girl suddenly blasted him out of the doorway, the door slamming shut as he tumbled across the hallway.

"Didn't even listen to me for a sec…" Standing and scowling, Subaru nearly went to the same door, but figured there was no way that'd work. "Don't underestimate my guessing abilities!"

Three doors down the hall, he swung another door open and quickly strode inside. The girl seemed shocked that he returned so quickly.

"Come on, just give me a minute—"

She raised her hand, but before she could try to banish him again, Subaru braced himself, managing to catch himself on the door as wind threatened to blow him away. After a moment, it ceased, and he pulled himself back inside.

"Hmph… Betty had said there was little time for this, did she not?"

"You're just mad that I guessed correctly again," Subaru said cheekily. However, as she seemed ready to do something more drastic, he quickly added: "Wait wait! I want to help, and I also want to ask some things!"

Beatrice hesitated, before dropping her hand and looking down at her book.

"You have one chance, I suppose," she muttered.

Subaru grinned. "Alright! Look… I'll tell you the main reason we came here."

Opening up a bit to someone who supposedly guarded a lot of powerful information was a desperate but possibly fruitful plan. Subaru told her about what had happened in the Capital, and how they wanted to find Emilia to potentially save her.

If she knows we had nothing to do with it, then maybe she'll open up a bit more.

Beatrice seemed to be deep in thought by the time Subaru had finished his tale. She gently shut her book and set it aside, leaning forward and gazing at him intently.

"What is it you want from Betty, I wonder?"

"Well, uh… I guess it depends on what you can give me— Alright alright!" Subaru panicked a bit as the girl raised her hand again, looking annoyed. "Can you tell us where Emilia is?"

She shook her head. "Betty cannot tell you that."

Subaru sighed. "Figures…"

"Because," Beatrice continued, "She never returned to the mansion, I suppose."

"What? Then where is she?"

"Wherever that foolish man has gone off to," Beatrice said with a slight pout.

"You mean… Roswaal?" Subaru rubbed his temple, thinking of what that could mean. Was he truly already on-track to saving Emilia? If so, was their entire mission here pointless in the end? "So he's already finding a way to help, would that mean that…"

Subaru trailed off as he saw the worried expression on Beatrice's face. He recalled her being worried about somebody named 'Bubby', could that have something to do with it?

The gears slowly began to turn for Subaru. He recalled Felt mentioning some sort of spirit back when they had talked after the incident in the Poor District.

"This uh… Bubby, Emilia's Spirit? You're that worried about them?"

Beatrice narrowed her eyes at him. "Yes. With that girl in danger, he is also suffering, I suppose… And despite all of this knowledge, Betty cannot find a way to save him."

For the first time since originally laying eyes on Beatrice, Subaru felt like she was just a vulnerable child more than ever. It reminded him of the same revelation he'd had about Meili— No matter how she acted or what she did, she was still a kid in the end.

"I see… Well, surely Ros.. Er, Sir.. Mathers?… Can figure out something," Subaru insisted. "Isn't he like, super powerful?"

"Debatable," Beatrice said bitterly. "He is just a fool who tries impossible things and drags people down with him, I suppose."

"Jeez, sing his praises more huh… I'm getting the impression that this guy isn't as cool as I might've assumed."

"Hmph… If that is all, then—"

"Wait wait wait… Can you tell me more? I have to know about why, well…" He took a deep breath before blurting out the rest. "What the hell is the Witch's Scent and why does is piss Rem off so much?"

Beatrice seemed oddly annoyed at the question. "You came to Betty with some lovers quarrel?"

"N-No, it's not that," Subaru insisted, "I have to… have to…"

Have to what? If Emilia truly wasn't here, then learning was all Subaru needed to do. It didn't matter if Rem hated his guts, as long as he survived, right?

As if I'd let it end that way! If I was that weak, then all those times before…

No, I won't let the legacy of Natsuki Subaru get tarnished because I was scared to try!

"I have to make things right, no matter what," he managed to say.

Beatrice looked a bit conflicted, before scoffing and shaking her head.

"If it will get you out of Betty's hair, then she could tell you some things."

Subaru grinned. "Really? You're the best!"

"Just… stay over there," Beatrice told him as he got closer. "Betty can see what the problem is… You do quite reek of the Witch, I suppose."

"Eh..?!"

With that, Subaru listened in to what Beatrice had to say. She explained that not many could detect the scent of the Witch, but it generally lingered on those who have some sort of ties to her, including a group known as the Witch Cult that follow her. She also began to tell how twin Onis, Rem and Ram, had suffered a lot at the hands of the Witch Cult, but cut it off without much detail.

"…But those details are not Betty's to give. You will have to ask them about their past yourself, I suppose."

Subaru nodded. He had sat cross-legged nearby, listening to her tale like a child.

"That does answer some things," Subaru said. "But honestly, I've got way more questions now too."

"Hmph, well, Betty does not have infinite time however," Beatrice said in a tone that held a finality to it.

"From the looks of it, you kinda do," Subaru commented, motioning around to the large magical library that the girl guarded.

That must have been the last straw, because the girl quickly stood up and approached him. Subaru scrambled towards the door and grabbed the handle, before stopping and turning to her, having second thoughts about running away.

"Would you happen to know anything about Yin Magic, Bea—"

WHOOSH! Subaru was blasted out of the room, hard enough to slam into the wall opposite of the door, stunning him for a while.

"Another meeting with Lady Beatrice?" Ram's voice eventually said as his daze went away.

"Yeah… Just a friendly chat," he muttered.

Ram smiled slightly. "Getting into trouble is your strong suit, isn't that true Barusu?"

"It's Subaru… But that was close enough— Wait, was that on purpose?!"

The girl made a small noise of delight, then turned and walked away, leaving Subaru to scramble up and follow, amazed that he'd just heard something with a bit of humor come from the girl.

With that, the fifth day came to an uncertain end, with Subaru returning to his room, wondering what the night would bring.

Time to see if any of the past few days had paid off…

He found himself unable to go straight to sleep, and instead continued to try and keep up with his reading and writing. Ram never showed up to teach him, but he thought nothing of it, as they had their own duties to attend to most likely.

Both fortunately and unfortunately for Subaru, he would get his chance to redeem himself to Rem on this night. However, it would come in the form of silent death that descended upon the mansion, unnoticed until it was all too late.

It all started with a scream in the dead of night. By the time Subaru emerged from his room, he found a body lying in the hall, blood trailing from it. It was a person in a strange dark robe and pointed hat. The sight was confusing to say the least, but as he turned to go towards Meili's nearby room, he gasped as he saw several more of the hooded figures staring at him.

He saw them produce gleaming daggers before they were upon him in a split moment–

SLASH! Subaru fell backwards, arms raised, but felt nothing. There were several thuds as his attackers all fell, and he saw Meili standing behind them, out of breath, the dagger in her hand coated in crimson.

"Li…!"

Scrambling over to her, Subaru helped to support the girl as she seemed quite out of it. She began to tear up, and pushed her face into his side as she sobbed.

"What the hell's going on? Have you seen Joshua?" Subaru held onto her, looking down each way in the hall, wary of more attackers. "Was that all of them?"

Looking back, Subaru would always find that question to be humorous. Of course it wasn't.

A tremor shook the entire mansion to its core.

"Subaru–"

Meili didn't get to say what she wanted, before the ground beneath them crumbled, and they descended down to the first floor, slamming into debris along the way. They tried to hang onto each other, but the chaos of it all ended up flinging them apart, and then…

Silence. When the dust had settled, Subaru felt like he could barely feel his body, besides his right arm in front of him. Soon, he realized that the rest of him was trapped under something, most likely debris from the destroyed parts of the mansion they'd fallen through.

Then he noticed the bodies. It was impossible to tell who was who, some of them might have been the ones who had attacked them, but he wanted to find Meili, Joshua, anyone– Even if it meant seeing something he didn't want to.

Then, through the dust and flames that were arising around him…

"Is this… the limit of love? Hmm…"

The voice and face of insanity struck. Subaru was lifted into the air by an invisible force, unable to do anything but watch and lament about his failures–

And hear those last words before dying.

"My brain trembles…!"

SNAP!

This time, Subaru's awakening was anything but peaceful. He sat up quickly, sweating and breathing hard, eyes darting around the room frantically.

"S-Subaru..?"

As Meili spoke, he jumped a bit, looking at the girl who looked incredibly worried.

"Ah…" Subaru gulped, feeling like his mouth was incredibly dry, as if he could still taste the dust and smoke in the air from moments before his death. "You're… y-you're… al…alright," he said shakily.

Before Meili could question his obvious fear, Ram entered the room with his uniform. Not wanting to deal with pleasantries right now, Subaru quickly got out of the bed and strode past her, the girl looking at him as he went.

"I would not recommend moving so much after having your mana drained, sir–"

He ignored her. Stepping out into the hallway, he felt chills running along his skin, every slight movement of flickering shadows and every minor breeze making him jump, seeing that terrible face in everything.

Subaru both knew and didn't know where he was going. After all, it was up to his incredible luck to find it.

And of course, he did it on his first try.

Opening the door to the Forbidden Library, Subaru walked in, receiving a cold stare from Beatrice.

"Did Betty not say that…'' She trailed off as she saw how he looked, the boy moreso falling onto his bottom rather than sitting nearby. "Did something happen, I suppose?"

Subaru let out the weakest chuckle he could manage. "Yeah…"

Beatrice sighed. "What is it you want from Betty?"

"I…" Subaru gulped, his fear gripping him, as if that person who had killed him could show up right now to attack him if he said anything. "I… I have to ask about…"

"Hmm…?"

It was difficult to find the strength to speak those words. The attack he had just experienced seemed impossible and too well timed, was it not? After all, he'd barely learned of their existence, and yet, he had to ask:

"The Witch Cult…"
