With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.
Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.

The Secret of Pandora
Case 4: Prison Break
"Inmate Kuroba! Your wife is here, you lucky bastard. I assume you know the drill."
Huh. Kaito sat up slowly and then followed the guard out of the cell. After Shinichi's last visit, Kaito had been sure that he'd see the detective again, because Shinichi was like a dog with a bone when he set his eyes on a case. But not this soon. Not that he was complaining; just getting to see his detective really helped him get through the day. And seeing Shinichi like that definitely got him through some lonely nights, because damn his legs looked good in the short, red dress.
"Kai-chan!" Shinichi sounded as perky and cute as last time. "I missed you!"
Shinichi jumped him, wrapping his arms around Kaito and the thief was determined to enjoy this as long as he could. Warm and feeling so good against him. Once the guard was out and the door closed, Shinichi let go of him and turned around. The view from the back was incredibly distracting because the high heels didn't just do wonders on Shinichi's legs, they also worked on his butt.
"I already shared my most tragic life-story with you, what more do you want, tantei-kun?" asked Kaito softly before quirking his lips. "Unless you want to use this conjugal visit properly~"
"Another comment like that, I'll turn you into a natural soprano," warned Shinichi unimpressed.
"You're no fun at all, Great Detective," Kaito sighed with a small pout. "So, what is it?"
"You'll change your mind on how much fun I am when you hear why I'm here today," Shinichi pulled the collar of his dress down to get something out of his bra. "I'm here to break you out."
Perhaps seeing a flash of a pink nipple had fried Kaito's brain but he was pretty sure he had just heard his tantei-kun claim that he was here to break Kaito out of prison. Definitely fried brain.
"I'm sorry, what?" asked Kaito as he watched Shinichi unpack.
"You heard me, Kuroba," Shinichi grunted as he unfolded what he had unpacked. "According to my mother, this should be all you need to disguise yourself as the guard."
"Slow down," requested Kaito, his hands held up high. "Why would you, the Great Detective, the person who put me here, break me out of prison? You're law-abiding!"
For a moment, Shinichi paused and turned to look at him. "I'm law-abiding, but I've worked with a criminal before if it was for the greater good. You know that. You are that criminal."
"Explain it to me," Kaito sat down on the table, watching Shinichi. "Why are you doing this?"
"The men in black..." Shinichi trailed off and licked his lips. "I can't rest until I did everything I can to take them out. To stop them. These men in black, the ones that killed your father, that tried to kill you. I don't think that I can take them out without you. Besides, you stopped them from killing by beating them to the jewels. If nothing else, you returning to being KID will stop the killing while we figure out how to take them out for good. Together."
Akako's face came to Kaito's mind. The only way for Kaitou KID to keep soaring the sky and reach his true goal is for him to be captured by the demon of light. Was that it? Was that what her cryptic prophecy had tried to tell him? He needed to be arrested for Shinichi to put this together and for the two of them to work together? That was insane. Completely ridiculous. Right?
"One problem," offered Kaito after a moment. "I mean, probably multiple problems, but first of all, everybody kind of knows that Kuroba Kaito is Kaitou KID so how do you..."
"I have a plan for that, but can we maybe focus on the break out first, before we get to how things will continue after that?" requested Shinichi. "We need to run through the plan so you know what to do before the guard returns to bring you to your cell, okay?"
"Okay. Tell me how you're going to break me out of prison, tantei-kun."
Shinichi pushed a make-up kit and a watch toward him. "My tranquilizer watch. Put that on your body, I know you can hide things under your clothes. When you reach your cell, you tranq the guard and then you have to be very quick so you don't draw attention. This plan really hinges on you being you and doing what you do. Switch clothes with the guard, make yourself look like him and make him look like you. Put the tranquilized guard into your bed, it'll buy us time until he wakes up."
Kaito raised his eyebrows impressed while he put the things away. "Okay, got it so far. Then?"
"Then you return here to bring me out of the prison. You'll have to clock out afterward. I scheduled this visit to coincide with the guard's shift ending. Leave the prison, act casually, take the guard's car to this address. We'll go from there. Here are the plans of the prison, let me show you where you have to go to clock out and where the changing room is. I trust you can memorize it."
"Of course, tantei-kun," Kaito grinned and leaned over Shinichi's shoulder to look at the plans.
"For the record and as a fair warning, Aoko-chan was not a fan of this plan," said Shinichi after a moment.
Kaito stared at him in bewilderment. "...Aoko... knows that you're breaking me out?"
"She's been lied to enough and her learning about those lies the way she did... I think that it would irreversibly damage your relationship if she doesn't know," replied Shinichi. "Hakuba-kun is also not a big fan of it. They heard me out and can see the benefit of it, but..."
Kaito swallowed hard and averted his gaze. He wondered if him and Aoko even still had a relationship. If she would ever talk to him again, or if it was already damaged beyond repair.
"She still loves you," offered Shinichi gently, not looking at him. "She's hurting right now. But I know what you mean to her. And if she hears... what you told me, the last time I visited, I think that she'll understand. If I can understand your reason, then your best friend will too."
"...Thank you, Shinichi," whispered Kaito, voice warm and soft.

Tranquilizing the guard and changing outfits and faces with him took half a minute. He knew Sawamura enough to mimic his stance, the way he walked and talked. Then he did everything as Shinichi had planned it ahead; picking his lovely wife Tomomi up from the room and bringing her out of the prison, clocking out, getting changed, leaving the prison and taking the guard's car. His wife wasn't waiting for him there but a student of Teitan High with short, brown hair, seemingly freshening up her make-up. Kaito knew that Shinichi was just using the mirror to keep an eye on what was going on behind him. Without speaking to Shinichi, Kaito passed him and took the school bag from Shinichi, knowing that his own costume change was in there. Shinichi's old school uniform, as well as a quick temporary hair-dye to turn his hair black. Kaito was in and out of the public bathroom in under five minutes and this time when he approached Shinichi, the detective closed the mirror, smiled at Kaito and attached himself to Kaito's arm.
"Ne, ne, honey, let's go and have cake at the fancy hotel, yes?" asked Shinichi sweetly.
Damn, this was such a turn-on for Kaito. Not even so much the crossdressing – though he couldn't deny that that did something for him too, especially Shinichi's legs in dresses and skirts – but the display of competence. Shinichi's mind had always been what Kaito was most in love with, it had been the first thing he had fallen for. That brilliant mind that could work a hundred angles at once. The fact that Shinichi had come up with such a smooth plan to break him out of prison, how easily Shinichi slipped into the roles he had to play for this, how he had thought every angle through.
"Anything you want, sweetheart," offered Kaito in a voice similar to Hakuba's but altered.
The two walked in silence until they were alone. No other pedestrians on this street.
"We're going to part ways here," Shinichi whispered regardless. "You remember the hotel and the room I told you? Get there. I know you'll be able to... get into the room even without a key. It's not occupied right now. Go through the balcony down one floor. We'll meet there."
"Why aren't you coming with me?" asked Kaito with a frown.
"Because Kudou Shinichi has to be seen entering the building," replied Shinichi. "Just be a good sneak thief and do as you're told. If I'm late, just... don't do anything suspicious."
"You're so mean, tantei-kun," Kaito pouted. "A bad wifey and girlfriend, so mean to me."
"The only reason I'm not kicking you yet is because you don't know the final stage of the plan yet and I will be gloating in delight at that point," muttered Shinichi beneath his breath.
"Well then, I'll see you later, sweetheart," offered Kaito and kissed Shinichi's cheek.
The detective flushed a pretty pink as the two of them parted ways. It was the blind trust between them that really got Kaito though. Yes, Kaito had no idea where all of this was going, what the next step of the plan was, but he trusted Shinichi. And Shinichi trusted him to come to the hotel, to not just use his freedom and run away. It filled him with relief, because for months now, he had feared that he would never even see his tantei-kun again, much less have his trust. As much as he had opposed telling Shinichi about Snake, it had restored something between them. Explaining to Shinichi how and why he had become Kaitou KID. Perhaps Shinichi was right, perhaps he needed to just sit down with Aoko and explain it all calmly to her. Hopefully it would help.

Kaito sighed contently as he ruffled his hair. Since Shinichi hadn't been at the hotel by the time Kaito climbed into the bedroom from above, he decided to take advantage of the nice, hot, private shower. When he got out of the bathroom, he found Shinichi – actually dressed as Shinichi – sitting on the bed. As enchanting as Shinichi in a dress had been, Kaito did love him in a well-cut suit too.
"That is a very pretty dress. For you or for me?" asked Kaito playfully.
There was a purple dress laid out on the bed next to Shinichi, a red wig on the pillow. "For you."
"Let me guess? The owner of this hotel room?" Kaito stepped up to look more closely.
"Your new identity, actually, but yes, also the owner of the room," replied Shinichi. "Here's a file with your fake new life and the persona you're going to play in public from now on."
That made Kaito frown curiously. He had brought up the issue with his identity being revealed to the public, but he hadn't entirely expected a whole fake identity from Shinichi. Accepting the file, Kaito opened it to go through the information. Tsukino Guinevere, half-Japanese, half-French, born and raised in Paris where... Kaito blinked slowly and looked up at Shinichi.
"Run this by me, in your own words, tantei-kun," requested Kaito slowly.
"Nobody knows where I was in the past two years or what I was doing. The story will be that I spent the majority in Paris, where I hopelessly fell in love. Now that my agency is up and running, I've arranged for my fiance to come and live with me," replied Shinichi in a factual way.
"Just, questioning the part where you want me to be your fiance."
"It's the best cover," argued Shinichi, though he was blushing. "I'm not going to leave you out of my sight, KID. And it might be suspicious if I just happen to gain a random roommate. Why would I. The past two years of my life are a mystery, me falling in love in that time is not out of the realm of possibility. No one is going to question a man and his fiance living together. I've always been a private person who didn't like to flaunt my personal life around. You'll live with me so I can keep an eye on you and if you leave the mansion, you pretend to be Tsukino Guinevere."
Sure, factually speaking that did make sense and was a good cover-story. Still, the part where it required Kaito to pretend to be Shinichi's fiance was really getting to the thief. He buried his face in the file to cover his blush. Learning his parents' names, the town his new alias had grown up in, anything that he needed to know to perfectly play this new persona.
"This is... very thorough," noted Kaito curiously.
"Helps having a world-famous author as a father," muttered Shinichi. "He came up with the story, my mother designed the disguise, Haibara and the professor brought her into existence."
"So they all know?" asked Kaito, raising his eyebrows.
"They all knew my secret, they know I didn't meet a pretty French girl," argued Shinichi. "But other than them, only Hakuba-kun and Aoko-chan know that I broke you out. The team is not entirely... decided yet and I don't know how far you would trust them, since you don't know them."
Kaito lowered the file, looking at his detective. "Team, huh?"
"We'll talk about that when we're at my place. Get changed, I'll pack everything up."
"What is all of this anyway?" Kaito looked around the room at the other clothes.
"My mother has been playing your role for the past couple of days already. It'd be suspicious if my fiance appeared out of nowhere on the exact day that Kaitou KID breaks out of prison."
Kaito was so impressed and so in love. "...You really did think of everything, didn't you?"

The red hair went really well with Kuroba's freckles and Shinichi hated that he noticed that. What he really didn't like were the green contact-lenses. KID's real eyes were so much more appealing. Not that Shinichi found KID's eyes appealing, it was more a general observation. The two of them made their way to the Kudou Mansion together, arm in arm, and Shinichi could finally breath in relief when his door closed behind himself. They'd made it. Out of the prison, to the hotel, now here, without getting caught. Closing his eyes, he leaned against the door. Just a moment.
"Oh hello, and who are you?" Kaito cooed as he went into his knees.
When Shinichi opened his eyes, he saw the thief petting the white cat. "...I don't want to tell you her name because I fear it might go to your head and you'll misinterpret it."
"What? Is she named Kaitou KID #2?" KID laughed as he picked up the cat.
"Her name is Kid-chan," admitted Shinichi after a beat, cheeks flushing.
Kuroba blinked surprised at him, not saying a word, which might just be worse than the teasing. Clearing his throat, Shinichi pushed off the door and walked deeper into the house, expecting the thief to follow him, which KID did without having to be told.
"I assume I can skip the grand tour, because you're a stalker and most likely have the layout of the mansion memorized," Shinichi shot the thief a look, earning a cheeky grin in reply. "Right. So I'll show you your rooms then. You don't have to be Gwen-chan while it's just us inside. The house has enough security measures that are very effective against break-ins and paparazzi."
"Right then," with the snap of his fingers, Kaito changed into a casual outfit. "So? My rooms?"
Shinichi hummed in confirmation as he reached his first destination. "Please be careful when opening the door. I'm not overly keen on having them all over the house and Kid-chan likes to chase them for fun – or for lunch, if she's still hungry, so it's safer for them."
Kaito frowned confused, growing more and more curious as to what was hidden behind the door. It opened and Shinichi snuck in, with Kaito right behind him. Inside, the thief was startled to have something fly right into his face, before it sat down on his shoulder and snuggled up to his cheek.
"...Tama-chan?" asked Kaito surprised when he recognized the white ball of fluff.
Looking around, he saw that the entire room had been turned into a bird enclosure. White doves. Nearly all of his white doves. Honestly, Kaito had no idea what to say to that. His throat felt too tight to talk already. He'd been so worried about them, had hoped that Jii-chan would be taking care of them. But... Why were they here? And why did Shinichi have a bird enclosure for them?
"Why, tantei-kun, did you go out and hunt down my doves and build all of this too while planning my prison-break? That is true dedication to detail," Kaito laughed playfully.
"I've had the enclosure longer than the plan to break you out," replied Shinichi unimpressed. "And your doves are as bad as you. They've been stalking me since you got arrested. I just... gave up at one point and turned a room into an enclosure, since they refused to leave."
Huh. What was that saying about pets and their owners? Apparently, Kaito's doves' taste was as good as Kaito's. Though it still was a bit unexpected to have Shinichi do all of this for them. Kaito smiled warmly as he caressed Tama-chan's head one last time before the two left the enclosure.
"Your bedroom is opposite mine," informed Shinichi as they headed up the stairs. "So I can keep an eye on you. If you sneak into my bedroom and if you do anything inappropriate, I will make you regret every single life-decision you have ever made, am I understood, pervert thief?"
"You continue not being any fun at all," Kaito sighed with a pout.
Shinichi threw him another glare as they entered the bedroom. Though the detective headed right over toward a sunflower painting. It reminded Kaito of the ones they had saved together.
"And this is your third room," commented Shinichi as he pressed the side of the frame.
It popped open, revealing a doorway. Kaito's eyebrows shot up as he quickly followed Shinichi through the small hole in the wall. It was big enough for them to climb through. Behind it was a hidden room. In the center stood a mannequin wearing KID's get-up, including the top-hat and the monocle. The walls were lined with gadgets and toys, things he'd need for his magic.
"H... How?" asked Kaito slowly. "The doves are one thing, but this... How...?"
"The costume was harder," admitted Shinichi. "But the professor... He actually knows your accomplice and contacted him about the costume. I suspected you had more than one, with how often you lose monocles and capes. The gadgets had been made by the professor to begin with. After I decided to break you out, I told the professor about it and asked him if he thinks he would be able to replicate the card-gun and hang-glider at least and he told me... He told me that he's been supplying Kaitou KID for twenty years now. With the original blue-prints, it didn't take him too long to rebuild them. If there is anything else you'll need, just tell the professor next door."
"Wait, wait, wait, the professor – my professor – is also your professor?" Kaito looked startled. "I mean, I have never met the person who makes all my gear and he's been referred to as 'the professor' before, but... No wait, this actually makes sense I guess... The card-gun, my grenades, your shoes, your soccer-ball belt, my hang-glider... Yeah, I can buy the same crazy brilliant mind being behind all of this, huh. Still, how small is the world...?"
"Been wondering the same thing lately," admitted Shinichi with a tired look on his face.
Kaito grinned to himself as he took the card-gun, twirling it in his hand. "It's lighter."
"Oh yeah, considering it's been years since he made it, he decided on a few improvements. Also, your suit is lined with a very light, but very bullet-proof, material," explained Shinichi.
Putting the gun down, Kaito moved on, his eyes roaming over all the things. A deck of cards caught his attention. He'd always liked to play with cards to keep his hands busy, so he started shuffling them, letting them fly through the air and catching them in his other hand. Just to keep himself busy, but he quickly noticed the enraptured way in which Shinichi was watching him.
"So... This is the big idea then?" asked Kaito softly. "Kuroba Kaito is a wanted fugitive and Tsukino Guinevere is your beloved fiance who just moved in with you? Kaitou KID resumes his work, chasing the crows back into the shadows of the night, while you and me work together to capture them? And KID's new base of operation is now... your home?"
"Please don't put it like that, listing all the crimes I have just committed for you," Shinichi groaned and covered his face. "Part of me still can't believe I did all of that... Have I lost my mind?"
"You've rationalized working with me to take down actually dangerous criminals before, tantei-kun," noted Kaito in a gentle voice. "You're doing the right thing, Shinichi. You are."
"Says the criminal I broke out of prison," Shinichi shook his head. "Sorry if your word is not exactly the final vote on the matter there, you're personally biased."
"Okay, yeah, that's fair," Kaito laughed softly before sobering up. "I'm looking forward to working with you, for what it's worth. You and I make a great team. Always have."
Shinichi averted his eyes so he could avoid agreeing with the thief. Because he knew this was true. When the two of them worked together, they were a force to be reckoned with.
Author's note: Next chapter, Kaito and Aoko are going to meet again. Because their friendship is incredibly important, but Aoko also had a right to her anger about being lied to for so long. Time to clear the air!
