With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.
Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.

Case 13: The Red Moon Heist (1)
When Shinichi woke up the next morning, it all still felt so very unreal. Like a dream he'd had. Kissing Kaito, confessing to Kaito. Only when he went down to the kitchen for his coffee and found the left-overs from their dinner still standing out on the table did it start feeling more real.
"Shin-cha—an," Kaito's voice was even more chipper than normal.
The next moment, Shinichi had a happy thief hanging off his neck. Hugging him tightly. The smile on Kaito's lips nearly split his face in half. He leaned in for a kiss and Shinichi watched the motion a little dazed. It was hard to believe that this was really happening. That Kaitou KID was in his kitchen, wanting to kiss him. Shinichi followed his lead to meet Kaito half-way.
"Good morning," Shinichi whispered against Kaito's lips.
"Boyfriend," Kaito grinned, looking far too pleased with himself. "Bo—oyfriend."
"Are you going to be insufferable about this?" Shinichi asked seriously. "Because I will take it back if you are going to be insufferable about this."
"Nope, no take-backs," Kaito stuck his tongue out at him. "You said you lo—ove me and you do not get to take that back again. I know you love me and you want to kiss me and-"
Shinichi covered the thief's mouth with both hands, scowling at the thief. "I take it all back. You are too insufferable. I changed my mind."
Kaito made a whining noise, staring at Shinichi with the saddest eyes possible. When Shinichi removed his hands, he rolled his eyes and quickly pecked Kaito's lips in a short kiss.
"Just... try not being too insufferable about this," requested Shinichi.
"How could I possibly not be insufferable about this, Great Detective?!" Kaito threw his hands up in exaggerated exasperation. "You love me! I get to kiss you now!"
Shaking his head, Shinichi turned around. "I have to go to work. And I believe you have a heist note to write. I'll see you tonight, Kaito. Try not to write a love poem in the note, mh?"
"You're just no fun at all, Shin-chan," Kaito pouted. "No fun at all."

Shinichi walked into the agency with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm. He'd left exceptionally early to make one more stop before going to work. He smiled, even as Kogoro's scowling face pushed its way into his line of vision. No, not even he could destroy Shinichi's mood.
"What are you doing here?"
"Is Ran home?" Shinichi asked, putting Kogoro's favorite coffee in front of him. "Here."
Bit of bribery. Their relationship had never exactly been good, but it didn't hurt to try... right? Kogoro looked at him skeptically, but he pointed into the direction of the kitchen. Of course. Shinichi continued on his way, still smiling as he entered the kitchen and spotted her.
"I bring your favorite tea," Shinichi held it up as an offer. "And hoped we could... talk."
"Talk?" Ran frowned at him, before the frown melted. "...Okay."
Oh. Oh, that was a good sign. Seemed like her weekend trip away with the girls had really done her some good. And she deserved it. Maybe he should have called beforehand, asked if he could come over, but... perhaps, part of him had been afraid of the answer. The other part of him had simply forgotten about that. He was so used to just coming over to Ran's all the time.
"I'm sorry," Shinichi cleared his throat. "I just... something great happened to me. And I wanted to share it with you. Should I have asked you before coming over...? I'm still unsure about... about where you and I stand, right now...?"
"I... don't know the answer to that yet either," admitted Ran. "I think... we need to figure out a new way of being us? Together, somehow? See what works?"
"Yes," Shinichi nodded his agreement. "Yeah, we'll... do that. How are you?"
"I'm... I'm doing better," Ran took a deep breath and nodded. "It was nice, going on the little cruise. Enjoying the sun, not worrying about anything. And when I returned, Masumi-chan had this whole big dinner prepared for me. She... was feeling so guilty. But the days away really helped me sort my feelings about the whole situation? I'm... I understand why she lied, I know that we've slowly grown closer and then we were dating and it's hard to figure out... when to share something like that."
"Right," Shinichi bit his lip. "So she's no longer in the dog-house?"
"No," Ran smiled and shook her head. "I did tell her no more lies though. And I'm telling you no more lies too, you hear me? I can't... handle that anymore."
"I promise," Shinichi nodded quite hard. "I just..."
"So, what is it? You came here for some news? What happened?"
"Ah," Shinichi flushed. "So I... I told Kaito that I... love him. And we kissed."
"You..." Ran blinked repeatedly. "Oh. Oh wow. I'm... I'm happy for you, Shinichi."
A small smile spread over Shinichi's lips and his cheeks turned darker. "I'm... I'm unsure how this is going to go. I mean, if... we're... a couple now? And it's... complicated. He's living with me. We're doing this whole fiance play. We're chasing a criminal organization together."
"Yes, I guess your relationship is made more complicated by your circumstances," Ran frowned. "But... you do love him, don't you? And he loves you?"
"Yes," Shinichi was startled by how fast his answer came.
"Then you have everything that's important," Ran's smile was reassuring. "Everything else, I know you're going to figure out together somehow. Your thief is... very crafty."
That was true. Shinichi nodded slowly. He supposed they could. They figured everything else out somehow, hadn't they? A relationship? That didn't sound that hard, compared to some of the other things they had gone through together. Like taking down pretend-terrorists on an airship, or landing a plane together. It was strange, the things he found himself capable of when KID was at his side.
"Thank you, Ran," Shinichi smiled back at her. "I really needed that."

"You are of high spirits today," Jii looked strangely pleased by that.
"Ye—es. I feel like absolutely everything is going to go according to my plans today," Kaito laughed. "Writing the note, it just... it came to me, even more easily than it usually does. I can visualize it all, how I'm going to dazzle Shinichi tomorrow."
"Steal the jewel," Jii added. "How you're going to steal the jewel."
"Oh, yes, that too," Kaito waved a hand dismissively at that. "I mean, stealing is... I know how to do that. But Shinichi! This is... This is going to be the first heist now that we are a couple!"
"And you wish to impress him," Jii heaved a sigh, but the look on his face was one of fondness. "You truly are your father's son, if I may say so."
Huh. That was... Kaito hadn't looked at it like that yet, but his father had become Kaitou KID not just to protect his mom, but also to impress her. Impress the greatest phantom thief there had been, until Toichi took up the mantle. And in a way, every performance Toichi put up as Kaitou KID had been to charm Chikage, to impress her, to put awe on her face. The same way Kaito performed for Shinichi. Teh. Okay. So he was his father's son indeed.
"Let's make this heist particularly special," Kaito declared with utter determination.

Shinichi furrowed his brows as he stared at the heist invitation. He was trying to solve the riddle. Which was made unreasonably much harder by the cuddly thief on his lap. Kaito was trying to get his attention. He kept peppering Shinichi's face with kisses, running his fingers through Shinichi's hair, trying to mess it up and in total awe at how smooth it was.
"Thief," Shinichi grunted.
"Detective?" Kaito sounded unreasonably pleased. "You're so soft."
"And you're so distracting," Shinichi glared. "I'm trying to work here."
"You have an office to do work at. This is home. Home is not for work," Kaito chimed innocently.
"Stop trying to be cute. It's not cute. It's annoying," Shinichi shoved him lightly. "Off, thief."
Kaito whined, but he did get off Shinichi's lap. He didn't let go of the detective though. Because he was aware that he couldn't be affectionate with his detective during their actual work, at the heist. So he had to get as much as he could out of it before the heist. And besides, his detective was clever enough to actually figure this out while paying attention to Kaito.

The Akatsuki family home was beautiful and large. Nakamori was cussing up a storm trying to position his people at all exits and entrances, which was harder than it should be thanks to many glass doors leading out to the garden. Shinichi was currently checking the premises himself.
"Hello. Are you a police man?"
Startled, Shinichi turned around. There was a little girl standing right behind him, no older than the Detective Boys. Red hair put up in pigtails, while small hands clutched a... a Kaitou KID doll. Of course. She looked at him with curious eyes and he smiled at her.
"I'm not a police man, but I am here with the police," Shinichi went down in his knees to look at her properly. "I'm Kudou Shinichi, I'm a detective. And who are you?"
"I'm Akatsuki Mizuki! I live here."
She looked very proud at that, making Shinichi smile more sincerely. Before his stint as a kid, he hadn't been good with kids at all. But being with the Detective Boys had made him more patient.
"Mizu-chan? Mizu-chan, are you here anywhere?"
A woman with hair as red as Mizuki's walked around the corner, looking worried. Relief filled her face when she spotted the little girl. Though the expression quickly changed into a scowl.
"Mizu-chan, I told you to go to your room while all these strangers are running around here."
"I'm sorry, mama," Mizuki looked guilty as she shifted around. "I was curious."
"I'm so sorry if she bothered you," the mother turned to look at Shinichi.
"Oh no, it's quite alright," Shinichi offered the mother a reassuring smile.
"Goodbye, mister detective," Mizuki waved at him. "But please don't catch mister thief."
Shinichi blinked a couple of times, trying not to laugh. Well, she wouldn't have to worry about that. The mother heaved an exasperated sigh at that, motioning toward the stuffed toy.
"She likes the thief," explained the mother. "I've been trying to tell her that it's not good rooting for a criminal, especially when said criminal is here to steal from us."
"But he always gives everything back!" Mizuki argued with a pout. "And he performs magic! I love his magic tricks, they are the best!"
Shinichi had to cover his mouth to not laugh out loud. Oh, that kid was precious. When had he started thinking that? People rooting for the thief had always annoyed him. Somewhere along the way, he had grown so attached to his thief that he found these things charming.
"If you need anything, my husband is in the living room, talking to the inspector."
"Thank you, Akatsuki-san," Shinichi nodded briefly and then waved at the girl. "Bye, Mizuki-chan. I'll make sure to tell the thief that you like his tricks, mh?"
Mizuki perked up at that, nodding so hard her pigtails swung around wildly. Shinichi smiled to himself as he watched mother and daughter leave. Time to return to his task at hand.

Nakamori was in a mood. Not even his daughter's presence seemed able to calm him down. But then he tended to be even more irritated when a heist was at a private estate, compared to a museum where he got more cooperation. Civilians always proved a risk, Kaito knew that. He loved that. They tended to make things much, much easier for him. Which explained why the inspector didn't like it much. Kaito had snuck his way in by pretending to be the babysitter. He'd anticipated that the parents would call someone to watch their young daughter and try to keep her out of the heist. Well, that was going to be hard seeing as Kaito needed to be in the heist, but until his time was up, shadowing the young girl was a great way to get a feeling for the house.
"What are you doing?" Shinichi's voice was a low hiss.
"Playing hide-and-seek with the young miss," Kaito offered a smile that shone through his disguise. "I figured if I power her out now, she will be sound asleep during the heist."
Shinichi snorted and shook his head, before turning his back on Kaito to go and find Sera and Hakuba instead. Searching for the child was a great excuse to explore the place more. Kaito had already caught a few good looks at the gem itself. A large, red ruby, set in a golden necklace, with a star on the left and the right of the ruby, selling the imagery of a night sky and this being a red moon. Very tacky and too big for Kaito's own taste.
"It's been a family heirloom," Kaito heard the wife say. "I've had it in my family for so many generations now, I couldn't imagine losing it."
"Don't worry, ma'am, we are going to protect your jewel," Nakamori-keibu promised.
Oh, how much Kaito hated turning the inspector into a liar. Alas, this was his job.
/break\
"Now it's time to sleep for little princesses," Kaito smiled warmly.
Surely the girl had to be exhausted at this point. Kaito was, that much was for sure. He'd been running around this house for the past hour. It was way too ridiculously large. All Kaito wanted at this point was lounge on the couch at the Kudou mansion, with Kid-chan on his lap, watching TV with Shinichi. He'd even let the detective choose the movie.
"But I wanna see how you steal the jewel."
"What," Kaito blinked a couple of times.
"You're not Seiko-nee-chan," declared Mizuki with determined eyes. "Seiko-nee-chan knows exactly where I like hiding the most but you weren't really looking for me, you were looking around the house, because you're KID-san!"
Oh my, Kaito had a miniature detective at his hands, it seemed. Might as well entertain the child, right? He dropped the facade and offered his trademark KID-smirk. Pressing a finger against his lips, he winked at Mizuki. The girl looked absolutely delighted at being right.
"I need you to be a good girl and go to sleep now though," Kaito whispered. "So I can go about my work without having to worry about you, okay? Because heists can be dangerous."
Mizuki looked put-out by that, pouting openly at Kaito. Aw, as manipulative as Kaito's favorite detective when he wasn't getting what he wanted either, how adorable.
"But I wanna see you perform!"
"Aw, I know you do," Kaito tried hard not to smile. "But little thieves need to steal and little girls need to sleep. I'm sure you can see it all on TV tomorrow, mh?"
Mizuki did not look pleased by that. And Kaito understood it, he really did. Seeing something live yourself was always better than seeing a recording of it. But Akai had already spotted some suspicious vans and people. They didn't know if this was a fun, safe heist or if there were sharpshooters present trying to take him out. Every life lost to Pandora was one too many, but Kaito genuinely didn't know how he'd handle it if a child got hurt because of him.
"I'll make you a deal," Kaito kept his voice in a low whisper. "If you are being good and promise to go to sleep now, I will return tomorrow in daylight to give back the gem and then I'll perform a trick just for you. How does that sound, Mizuki-chan?"
The girl wiggled her nose, eyebrows drawn deep as she contemplated the offer. Finally, she nodded her head and held out her hand. How adorable. Kaito took her hand to shake it.
"You have a deal, mister thief," Mizuki nodded. "But that means you can't get arrested tonight, otherwise I won't get my show. So you have to watch out for mister detective, he seems sneaky."
Sneaky, huh? Kaito couldn't help but snicker a little. She was on point with that.
/break\
Shinichi was alert. He knew better than to drop his guard, especially nowadays during the heists. After all, he knew the dangers that lurked around the corner. The problem with heists was that there were always factors he couldn't control. Namely, the bystanders. One of those factors was always Sonoko, but usually – like today too – Shinichi had Ran to watch over Sonoko. Ran herself, Shinichi knew he didn't have to worry about. If anything, the Men in Black ought to be afraid. Now more than ever, since she finally knew the whole truth. His eyes found hers on the other side of the room. She even stood with half a step in front of Sonoko, ready to fight anyone who turned out to be a bad guy. Of course would he prefer for them to be safely home, but trying to separate Sonoko from her beloved KID-sama was pretty much impossible.
The other factors were always the owners. The Akatsukis were a nice enough couple. He didn't speak much and looked very serious, while she clearly worried about her family heirloom. For the most part, they seemed to listen to Nakamori-keibu, which was always a good start.
However, they had a young daughter and if there was one thing Shinichi hard learned during his time as Conan, it was that nobody could stop a child from going where they wanted to go, because children were small, inventive and sneaky. But even knowing that didn't give him any guidance on how to deal with the kid, or where to expect her to pop up.
"Mizu-chan!"
The mother's voice was distressed and when Shinichi turned around, he felt dread overcome him too. A man he had come to know as Snake was holding the little girl, a gun to her head. He was in a standoff with Kaito. Kaito was holding the gem in one hand and his card-gun in the other. Her mother had made her way up onto the roof in search for her missing daughter, apparently.
"Akai," Shinichi's voice was sharp.
"I can't," Akai sounded frustrated and angry. "He's using her as a human shield and she keeps wiggling and fighting too much for me to safely take a shot."
The danger of her putting herself in the line of fire was too big. Shinichi gritted his teeth.
"The gem," Snake demanded. "Or the brat dies."
Mizuki was sobbing and thrashing in his hold. Shinichi could see the distress in Kaito's face, despite his perfect poker-face. Over the years, Shinichi had just become an expert at reading that poker-face. Shinichi knew they were in a risky situation here. He was holding his breath, hating how helpless he felt. Why would Snake show himself now? After all this time? Was this it? Shinichi had arrived too late to see whether or not the Red Moon ruby was Pandora. His eyes wandered back to Kaito, wondering if his thief knew what to do. Usually, Kaito always knew how to safe the day.
Author's note: FUN FACT, the last chapter originally started at the description of the Akatsuki manor. And then I decided no wait Shinichi should confront his feelings before the heist and then the confrontation burst the limits of the chapter and pushed the heist all the way outta the chapter and into THIS chapter xD and caused the heist to be split into two sooo stay tuned for the conclusion~
