With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.
Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.
The White Collar Phantom Thief
The Secret of Pandora
Case 14: The Red Moon Heist (2): The Aftermath
Kaito had sworn himself to never give Pandora over to the men in black, but there was a small child, crying in Snake's arms. What could he do? If it could save her life, he would give the stupid gem right now, there would always be ways to steal it back later after all.
"Mizu-chan!" Mizuki's father, sounding distraught and angry.
Oh no. No, no, no. What Kaito absolutely did not need right now were irrational, uncontrollable additional variables. Such as emotional parents. Indigo eyes widened as all Kaito could do was watch the way things escalated in just a split second. Mister Akatsuki lunged forward, reaching for Snake's gun, something Snake quite obviously didn't want. There were other gun-men though. There was the police. There was Akai on the roof. There was Missus Akatsuki, crying and sobbing and right behind her husband. There was Mizuki, still crying and struggling in Snake's arms. Snake himself, of course, with the gun against Mizuki's temple.
Before Mister Akatsuki had a chance to reach the gun, Snake shot him. He went down, blood blossoming on his white shirt, an arm reaching out for his daughter. His wife screamed at the top of her lungs and like that, chaos erupted. The first shot was all it took. Snake's men in the shadows and the police started shooting each other.
While Kaito had a hard time looking away from Mizuki, now that there were bullets – now that there was an unmoving body on the ground (dead? Unconscious? Kaito couldn't tell right now), there were other pressing priorities for him right now. He whirled around once, finding Shinichi and Aoko, arm in arm, pressed against a wall, hiding behind it. Good. Good, his boyfriend and his best friend had had the sensibility to seek cover. Great to see Shinichi display some basic survival instincts (though something told him that it had been Aoko who had pulled Shinichi away).
With that worry taken out of the equation (at least for now; knowing his detective, there was no accounting for when Shinichi would throw himself back into danger head first), Kaito's full attention returned to Mizuki. His card-gun was cocked and he tried to shoot Snake's gun out of the man's hand, now that it was no longer aimed at Mizuki's head.
There was such a rush of people and actions, bullets, bodies – people running around, physically fighting, rushing past him, toward those on the ground, trying to help, trying to pull them to safety. It was like a sickening dance, with far too much blood, a symphony of screams of terror accompanying them as Snake and Kaito danced around each other, bullets and cards flying.
Thanks to Kaito's intervention though – sharp cards cutting up Snake's arm that was holding Mizuki – did the bastard drop the child and with that, Mizuki was no longer a living shield. With that, Akai could safely take the shot. Even the best sharp-shooter had a hard time shooting when a frightened child was thrashing around in his line of vision, the risk was too great.
Snake went down. Kaito could revel in the satisfaction of watching Snake hit the ground with no movement for just half a breath before the severity of the situation caught up with him again and his awareness caught up with him again. Mizuki sat on the ground, all alone, sobbing and shaking. Next to the unmoving body of her father. An overwhelming sense of self-recognition overcame Kaito, as he saw himself and Toichi right there, death of his father caused by Snake too.
"Mizu-chan," Kaito's voice was gentle as he swept her up. "Hey, look at me, don't look over there."
He made funny faces, lifting the child up to hold her close so she would be looking at him instead of the bloodbath around them. Because he'd noticed the lack of Mizuki's mother coming toward them and he knew that couldn't mean anything good either. For now, he needed her to look away from the bodies, from the blood. He wrapped his cape around her, trying to shield her.
"KID," Nakamori barked out as he marched up to him, though his steps faltered as he closed in on him. "...Kaito. Is the child... Is she alright?"
Kaito. Kaito swallowed hard at that. The two of them hadn't spoken since Kaito had been arrested. He'd never expected Nakamori to actually acknowledge it like that, during a heist. There was something in Nakamori's eyes that Kaito couldn't decipher, maybe even didn't want to decipher. Kaito unclipped his cape, the child wrapped in it as he handed her over to him.
"Take care of her," Kaito whispered.
"No, don't leave, Mister Thief," Mizuki sobbed.
She reached out her hands for him, but Kaito smiled and bowed. "I'm afraid there are too many policemen for my taste here, we will have to meet again, young lady."
Kaito couldn't tell if Nakamori would have tried to arrest him, this whole thing had gone south so hard, but right now the young child in his arms was definitely distraction enough to keep him from putting cuffs on Kaito. The chaos of the scene alone was enough to let him disappear unnoticed. What Kaito noticed though was a high number of soccer balls at the scene and both Shinichi and Aoko inserting themselves into the investigation of the aftermath here.

When bullets started soaring into the direction of Kaito, Shinichi felt like his life was stopping. Fear grasped him and he felt himself unable to move. If not for Aoko tackling him, he didn't know if he could have torn himself out of it in time. Once he got himself shaken out of the stupor, he managed to take action and take some of the gun-men out himself too.
Even when the shooting finally stopped, Shinichi could still hear the echoes of the bullets in his mind. He could still feel the echoes of the shooting around him and he felt himself walking in a daze, following Aoko toward her father. Her first instinct, to make sure her dad was safe, was okay. His first instinct was Kaito. His first instinct was to find the white among the red. The only white he could find was being cradled by Nakamori. Kaito's cape. There was blood on it. Why was Nakamori holding Kaito's cape? Why was there blood on the cape? What was-?
"Mizuki-chan," Shinichi blinked a couple times when he noticed the little girl wrapped in the cape.
Okay, good. Not Kaito. Kaito had used his bullet-proof cape to shield the girl. Of course he had. And he'd of course handed her off to Nakamori for safe-keeping, which all implied Kaito must be alright – Kaito had to be alright, because if that thief dared to get seriously injured right now, now that the two of them were finally dating, then he would be in so much trouble.
"Where are-" Shinichi cut himself off.
He'd meant to ask about her parents, but he'd seen her father go down and right then he noticed, from the corner of his eye, someone covering the unmoving body of her mother. Oh no. No. Shinichi pushed himself between Mizuki and the sight of her mother.
"Hello, Mizuki-chan," Shinichi had to force his smile a little. "Are you hurt?"
She shook her head, still crying and hiccuping. "Where did Mister Thief go?"
"I'm afraid Mister Thief and the police don't mix well," Shinichi chuckled, more genuine at the thought of his boyfriend. "I'm sure all of that was very scary. Maybe you're injured and didn't notice. How about I take you over to the medics so they can look at you?"
He locked eyes with Nakamori-keibu, who looked quite relieved at that. This KID heist had escalated in a manner no other has before. From what Shinichi had seen, both owners of the jewel seemed dead, Shinichi had no idea where exactly the jewel even was and for what might be the first time, the KID task-force actually came into direct contact with the Black Organization. Snake was dead. Shinichi had heard it through his ear-piece and he had seen the man go down.
The murderer of Kuroba Toichi, the man who had killed the fist Kaitou KID, the man who had taken Kaito's father from him, was dead. Which was something Shinichi had to shelf for right now, because he didn't even know where his boyfriend was and there was a still sniffling child being placed in his arms, who right now deserved his full attention.
"Thank you, Kudou-kun," Nakamori-keibu's voice was unusually soft.
What did one do with a... traumatized child that had just lost one, if not even both, her parents? As Shinichi walked toward where the masses of medics had gathered that had been called upon by the police, Aoko came to follow him after a few moments of making sure her dad was alright.
"Shinichi-kun... what..." Aoko trailed off, like she didn't know what to say.
"Take my phone, call..." Shinichi cleared his throat. "Call Gwen-chan to tell her that I'm alright. And ask her to meet me at the hospital, ask her to bring the Detective Boys. I think that maybe other children could help Mizuki-chan better right now than hovering adults."
He motioned toward his jacket's pocket and Aoko nodded in understanding.

Kaito's hands were shaking as he took a quick, cold shower. Images of blood and bullets and a crying, frightened child were a whirlwind in his mind. Aoko had called him, on Shinichi's phone, and her voice had been so relieved to hear his voice, as she told 'Gwen-chan' that Shinichi was safe, told her about what had happened at the heist (keeping up facade) and asked him to meet them at the hospital and to bring the kids. With normal kids, Kaito would have been doubtful, but then these children were scarily experts when it came to dealing with the dead and the aftermath of death.
After the quickest of showers – to get rid of the blood and to calm down his mind – he put on his Guinevere disguise and rang up the professor, who seemed surprised but happy enough to drive them all to the hospital. Of course were the kids with the professor. Sometimes, Kaito wondered if they even had parents (and sometimes, he wondered what kind of parents they had. Allowing them to walk onto crime scenes with actual murders on the regular. Personally, Kaito would have probably forbidden his kids from hanging out with Conan-kun and the professor months ago).
"Where are we going?" Ayumi asked.
"We're going to the hospital, Ayumi-chan," Kaito smiled at her with his best Gwen-smile. "There is a little girl who got hurt and could use some cheering up. Maybe you could play some with her."
"How did she get hurt?" Mitsuhiko leaned forward some, always curious.
"There..." Kaito paused for a moment. "There was a KID heist and it didn't work out well, Shin-chan said there were some bad men. Mizu-chan is the daughter of the jewel-owners."
The kids were quiet on the way to the hospital. Despite their young age, they were aware of so many things that children their age shouldn't be. Even though they were playful and naive at times – as they should – sometimes they could be very insightful.

Relief washed over Kaito the moment he actually laid eyes on Shinichi. Shinichi, with bags under his eyes, his normally neat hair was ruffled, clothes rumpled, torn, bloodied at places – his own blood or other people's blood? He looked bone-tired.
"Shin-cha—an!" Kaito's voice pitched a little.
He ran up to his boyfriend, wrapped his arms around Shinichi's neck. His Great Detective seemed startled by the public sign of affection, but hey, what good was a disguise as Shinichi's fiance if he couldn't get some PDA in? Though he did seek out eye-contact with Shinichi first to check in if it was okay with Shinichi, once the detective nodded briefly and leaned in too, Kaito tilted his head for a kiss. It was brief and chaste, but it earned them giggling from the Detective Boys.
"You okay?" Kaito whispered into Shinichi's ear. "I wanted to check in but..."
"No, yeah, I mean..." Shinichi cleared his throat. "Aoko insisted that I got checked out too. I'm physically fine. A bit rattled, perhaps. But I'm fine. I'm waiting, right now, for the doctor to be done with Mizuki-chan. She... barely wanted to let go of me..."
"Okay," Kaito nodded, relieved. "Let's talk later. Let's check in on the kid for now."
Shinichi nodded sharply against him, taking Kaito's hand. The two of them herded the kids into the room as soon as the doctor gave them the all clear, though both of them stayed back outside with the doctor to hear what he had to say. Apparently, she had gotten away with it with some bruises and minor cuts, the worst of it was trauma. The worst of it was the loss of her parents.
"Hello, Mizuki-chan," Shinichi spoke softly as he approached the bed. "Do you remember me?"
"Mister sneaky detective," Mizuki nodded. "Is Kaitou KID okay?"
"Yes," Shinichi smiled. "He got away just fine, as he always does, that's just him."
For a moment, Shinichi paused, turning toward the kids and Kaito. "I brought some friends. And this is, ah, this is my fiance, Gwen-chan."
He flushed brightly as he wrapped an arm around Kaito's waist, before he went about introducing the Detective Boys. Haibara kept glaring daggers at him. The mocking kind, making fun of him for getting flustered. Shinichi attempted to ignore her, instead focusing on Mizuki. He sat down on the bed, next to her. A tiny hand reached up to him, clinging onto him. Ever since Nakamori had handed her to Shinichi, the girl had been clinging onto him, seeking his shelter and protection. He reached out to cover her hand, squeezing it very gently, trying to reassure her.

They stayed for hours, until the hospital kicked them out, but even then, the girl only let go of Shinichi because she finally fell asleep. The professor loaded the Detective Boys into his car to bring them all back to their respective homes and Kaito and Shinichi decided to split up.
"I want to go back, check in on her, as KID," Kaito's eyes trailed back to the hospital.
"Of course, yeah," Shinichi cleared his throat. "I have to... I have to call Nakamori-keibu, I want to know what happened. Check in with him. Then talk to Akai-san and the others."
Kaito nodded and reached out for Shinichi to pull him into a brief hug. "Okay. We'll talk tonight then, at home? I love you, stay safe."
Shinichi's heart fluttered at that. "I love you too. Watch out, don't get caught."
"Never," Kaito grinned pleased. "Only by you."
He winked before disappearing. Shinichi shook his head slightly. Okay. Nearly everything that could have gone wrong had actually gone wrong there. Thankfully enough, Mizuki was safe. But that was... really all Shinichi could say. What was going to happen to her now? She was just a kid. All over a stupid jewel, a dumb legend that these greedy bastards were buying into.

"Hello, young miss," Kaito put on his most delighted smile as he came in through the window.
He made a flourish motion and produced a flower for her. The girl was already wide awake, so it wasn't like he had woken her. Apparently, she'd woken up from a nightmare, there were tears on her cheeks. Understandable. It had taken months after Kaito's dad had died before Kaito had slept through a full night, really. Mizuki startled, but then she recognized him and looked eager.
"You came to visit me!" Mizuki sounded eager, and then she looked absolutely crestfallen and started crying. "I'm sorry. I... I... I'm so sorry, it's all my fault."
"Hey. Hey, no. No, it's not. It's not your fault, why do you think it's your fault?" Kaito rushed over to her side and sat down next to her. "What do you think is your fault?"
"Everything," the little girl launched herself at him with her full weight. "I promised you to stay in my bed and go to sleep, but then I sneaked out because I really wanted to see your show, I broke my promise and then there was the bad man, I saw him with the gun and he grabbed me and he said he could use me to make you give him the jewel and now-" a sob wrecked her little body, "-and now mommy and daddy are dead and it's all my fault because I didn't stay in bed."
Kaito's throat felt tight as he wrapped his arms around her, holding her in a safe hug. "It's not your fault, Mizu-chan, it's not your fault, you hear me? Those were very, very bad men and they would have done something horrible either way. It's very lucky that you are safe. Your parents, they loved you very much, they would have done everything to protect you."
Mizuki kept sobbing into his chest until she fell asleep once more. This poor child had been through so much and all Kaito wanted to do was help her, somehow, even though he didn't know how.

Both Akatsukis had died, trying to protect their daughter. Shinichi was used to death, he was used to people being dead. Even to people dying in front of him. But it never got easier. And definitely not when children were involved. Everything had been such a huge chaos. He'd kept his debrief with Nakamori-keibu as short as possible, because it was already late, the day had been much, much longer than expected. When he'd woken up this morning, in the afterglow of having confessed his feelings to Kaito and now having a boyfriend, he had not expected the day to take such a turn...
"I'm so..." Shinichi took a slow, deep breath, rubbing his eyes as he entered his home.
Meowing greeted him and oh no. Kid-chan had been home alone all day! He furrowed his brows concerned and went into his knees to pick her up, cradling her close to his chest. When he walked past her place of feeding, there was a post-it note with Ran's handwriting walked past the place after my errants, thought to feed your cat and doves – Ran. A soft smile spread over his lips.
"Even when the world would be burning, I could rely on you, huh, Ran..."
He walked upstairs with Kid rubbing her face against his chin, purring away happily that her human had returned to her. So much had happened today, he was fairly sure there were things he was forgetting about. He barely got rid of his jacket and belt before collapsing face-first on his bed, mindful of his cat. He was just glad to be off his feet at that point.
Once he hid the bed though, he couldn't shake the image of Mizuki, crying and frightened. That poor kid. He wasn't usually this involved. This wasn't like a case, Shinichi solved crimes. This wasn't a case to solve, they had all witnessed who had shot the parents. Nothing to solve there. Instead, he had somehow become the child's support, he had somehow become involved.
The window opened and Kaito's voice was very gentle as he sneaked in on silent feet. "Are you asleep already, tantei-kun?"
"Nh," Shinichi rolled over, which took more energy than it should. "How is she?"
Kaito, wearing an all-black outfit to blend into the night and sneak around undetected, let himself fall onto the bed too, arms spread. "...Blaming herself, for what happened."
"Wha...?" Shinichi tilted his head, scooting closer to his boyfriend.
"Before the heist," Kaito wrapped his arms around Shinichi's waist. "She realized I was pretending to be her babysitter. I made her promise to stay in bed. And she... She broke the promise and she got threatened by the gun-man and now her parents are dead. She thinks that's her fault. If she had stayed in bed, her parents would still be alive."
There were words to be said, but none came to Shinichi's mind. All he could do was heave a sigh, filled with all the exhaustion he felt in that moment. With that sigh, his eyelids fell close. Even with all the things in the back of his mind, in that moment, in his bed, in Kaito's arms, surrounded by Kaito's warmth, the exhaustion of the day caught up with him and Shinichi felt what little energy he had left drain away from him as he drifted off into sleep.
Author's note: For the sake of not ending this on a cliffhanger too, we will have the boys cuddling and falling asleep instead of discussing other heist related things right now! But yeah! Snake is date, everybody! *pops the champagne* And Mizu-chan survived!
