With Kaitou KID gone, Snake starts going after the jewels more actively and people get killed. It doesn't take Shinichi long to see a connection to KID – and that this is the last branch left of the BO he had taken down.

Shinichi forms a special task-force to end the BO for good. And for that, he needs Kaitou KID's help.

The White Collar Phantom Thief

The Secret of Pandora

Case 17: The Afterglow

Kaito stood with his arms crossed in the doorway to Mizuki's bedroom. Quiet, unmoving, simply watching. Very untypical Kaito behavior. Kaito was rarely quiet and rarely stood still. His mind however was so busy racing that his body had the chance to be completely still.

There was a young child curled up in the too big bed, clutching a Kaitou KID teddy to her chest, hugging it tight and close. She looked so small on the bed. Well, she was small. She was barely eight years old, she was a young child. But even so, she… seemed so much smaller? Or the world seemed so much bigger in comparison to her? Kaito's stomach felt so heavy as he looked at her.

All that she had been through, it made him feel so awful. Guilty. He'd been there. He'd been right there when her parents had died. It had been his heist and her parents had died, at the hands of Snake, of all people. Shaking his head harshly, Kaito pushed off the door-frame to make his way toward the library. It was strange how he kept gravitating there.

Sure, Kaito was well-read but libraries had never been his comfort places before. This library though? This library was his comfort spot, because it was Shinichi's library. Shinichi's books, Shinichi's favorite armchair that smelt like him. It also more often than not featured Shinichi sitting in it, holding a book and or a cup of coffee.

Not right now though. The armchair stood empty as Shinichi had gone to a late night meeting with Furuya, Akai and the police. Interrogations with the still captured BO member Rose, now that they had taken down Snake. Scare her into giving up more information. Like why they had seemed so particularly interested in the Akatsuki family.

Come to think of it… There was something Kaito hadn't gotten around to in all the chaos and death and fear of the night and hadn't thought about since, because the chaos had only barely died down.

With an absentminded look on his face did Kaito run his fingers over the armchair on his way out of the library again. Time to check on something else. His feet carried him out of the library and toward his own room. He opened the secret passage on autopilot, making his way to his KID cave.

Behind a portrait of his father, Kaito had a secret safe. Thoughtful of Shinichi to give Kaito, even in his hidden secret room another secret. For just a moment, Kaito looked at the portrait with a particularly nostalgic look. Mizuki and her loss had brought his own memories of watching his father die to the forefront of his mind. Perhaps another reason why he was restlessly wandering the halls of the mansion this late, instead of sleeping. Among other reasons.

The safe clicked open and Kaito reached in. Beyond his own family heirlooms that he kept here, toward the latest addition. Something he thought was safest here, for now. The Red Moon gem. The Akatsuki family heirloom. The gemstone Mizuki's parents had died for. It felt… heavy, in Kaito's hand. Far heavier than a gem its size should be. Heavy with two deaths. Heavy with the burden of an orphaned little girl, sleeping just down the hall right now.

"You're coming with me," Kaito whispered at the gem.

In long, quick strides did he head out onto the balcony. It was something he did out of routine at this point. Years and years of routine. Take the gem, hold it into the moonlight, return it to the owners. Rinse and repeat. A slight bump in the road this time, a delay in checking the gem – two murders, some arrests, an anniversary to celebrate and a child to foster – but aside from that, he expected nothing out of the usual. Hold the gem up into the moonlight, as always, pocket it and them put it back into the safe, for now, since the owners were dead. He wasn't going to burden Mizuki with it.

Despite having searched for Pandora for so many years now, he wasn't prepared for it. He didn't expect the bright, red light blinding him when the moonlight hit the gem. He was so startled, he actually dropped the gem. And even as it hit the ground, there was still a faint red glow.

"W… What…" Kaito blinked, staring down at it. "Did you just-? Did you just glow at me?"

What was he supposed to do now?!

/break\

Shinichi heaved the most exhausted sigh of his life, making a mental note to never schedule a meeting with both Rei and Akai that late. He could handle them in the morning, but late in the day he didn't have the energy left to deal with them. Reaching a hand up, he started rubbing his neck. What he'd need now was maybe a hot bath and if he could convince Kaito a massage? Those magic fingers would be great, they surely could work wonders on his tense muscles.

His first instinct was to call out for Kaito, but then he remembered that there was now a child living with them. A child who was hopefully, please, please, please already deep asleep because it was definitely already midnight, maybe past it, and the last thing Shinichi wanted to do was wrangle a kid into bed and fight over how many bedtime stories she was going to get (partially because Mizuki was a hard negotiator. Last time, Shinichi had not gotten away under four).

Where to go to first…? Bathroom for that blissful sounding bath, bedroom to simply fall into a light coma and forget about everything else, Kaito's room in hopes of that massage maybe?

Before his mind could even finish that question, his feet were already on their way toward Kaito's. Mh. No Kaito inside. Shinichi's brows furrowed. Okay. Where could his thief be, at night…?

First place he checked was the KID cave. Then Mizuki's room, knowing that Kaito liked to loom about and watch over her, feeling particularly protective of the girl since he saw a lot of himself in her and also carried very misplaced guilt (something that Shinichi had made a mental note to talk to Aoko about, to find a way to help Kaito with). In her room was only the sleeping child though. Slowly, Shinichi was running out of rooms and ideas. Kitchen? Late-night snack, maybe? No.

"Okay," Shinichi heaved a sigh and tilted his head back. "Kaito, where are you?"

Without a clue on where Kaito was, Shinichi decided to go to his library for now. Sit down, comfortably, and then text Kaito to ask where in the world he was. Surely he wouldn't have left the premises. He knew part of their deal was that Kaito wasn't to leave the mansion without Shinichi. And though there was trust between them, trust that meant Shinichi didn't believe Kaito would run away and flee, Shinichi didn't think that Kaito would break his word. Shincihi also didn't think Kaito would leave Mizuki completely alone in the mansion like that. Without protection. The mansion was big, but not that big, so Shinichi couldn't have displaced his boyfriend, right…?

"Meow!"

Once Shinichi entered the library, he was faced with both his KIDs. His thief and his cat. One curled together on top of the other. Kid-chan stared up at him with large eyes, pawing at Kaito, who seemed to be asleep on the couch in front of the table.

"Ah," Shinichi smiled faintly.

It seemed the Great Detective was more exhausted than he thought if he couldn't figure out where his silly thief would be. At the place that reminded him the most of his detective. Because he was a sentimental, love-sick, silly fool. Shinichi could feel his cheeks heat up as he approached Kaito. He caressed his boyfriend's cheek with a gentle hand. The touch stirred Kaito near immediately, long lashes fluttering, eyelids opening to reveal his dark blue eyes. So dark, in the right light they looked purple like rich amethysts. Shinichi liked that, he liked counting the shades of dark-blue and purple in them, observing the change of color in them depending on the light, loved memorizing which light made them look the prettiest. Setting sun, Shinichi had determined at one point, because the orange paired the best with them and made them look their most purple.

"Hey," Shinichi's voice was a whisper. "You should get up. This couch is not good for sleeping."

"You're back," Kaito smiled, lazy and tired even as he nuzzled into Shinichi's touch.

"I am," Shinichi went to sit next to the thief. "What are you doing here? Did you… wait up for me? You didn't have to do that, you know."

"Oh, I did," Kaito sat up, abrupt and with a startled look on his face. "You won't believe this."

One moment to the next, Kaito seemed wide-awake, staring up at Shinichi. Kid-chan made an annoyed noise of protest as the sudden movement jostled her around a bit. Kaito patted her to apologize but then quickly got up, having only a single thought on his mind. A hand reached out for Shinichi's, grasping it tight to tug him along. Out, toward the nearest balcony.

"You're… being dramatic," Shinichi frowned. "And I mean 'dramatic by your standards'."

"We found it," Kaito's voice was a hissed sound, tense and tight. "I didn't—I never thought. I don't know what I thought. I mean, the plan was always to find it, but…"

"Kaito," Shinichi turned toward him, concern written on his face. "Slow down, you're not making sense. I need you to formulate full sentences so I can follow you, okay? And then we can make sense of whatever this is together. You and me, like always?"

His hands cupped Kaito's face and though he never thought of himself as being good at reassurance, this he could do. There was some kind of problem and it needed solving, that much he could tell already. And he could solve problems. He could solve them even better when it was the both of them together. Kaito nodded, taking a deep breath.

His hand slipped into his pocket and he took out a gem. Shinichi recognized it from the heist. He also recognized the way Kaito's hand was shaking. In all his years of knowing the thief, not once had he seen Kaito's hands shake. During no trick, no heist. No threat against his life or the life of anyone else. Well, this night was apparently far from over and Shinichi wasn't going to get that massage and quiet rest of the night, was he?

Kaito lifted the gem up into the moonlight and as its rays hit it, it glowed a bright red, bathing them both in the red shine like blood spilling all over. Oh. Oh, that was the thing Pandora was supposed to do, wasn't it? Shine red under the moonlight.

"This…" Shinichi swallowed hard, reaching a hand out himself – a hand that was shaking as much as Kaito's had, Shinichi noted. "This is Pandora?"

"I mean, I guess?" Kaito shrugged, eyebrows furrowed and face screwed up.

With a shaky breath did Shinichi sink down onto the ground. After a few breaths, no less shaky than Shinichi's, did Kaito join him. They sat shoulder to shoulder, in total silence. The gem safely pocketed away by Kaito again, to prevent any further glowing. Minutes passed with neither talking, merely their presence next to each other. And the weight of Pandora in Kaito's pocket.

Shinichi spoke first. "Guess we figured out why Snake was so adamant to get that gem."

"What… do we do now, Shinichi?"

Kaito turned toward him, his eyes dark as night right now. Filled with questions and confusion. Oh, again. Shinichi… Shinichi had no idea. But somehow, it hadn't occurred to him that Kaito also wouldn't have any idea what to do next. This was Kaito's mission, after all.

"You…" Shinichi paused, unsure how to put this. "You don't know? I mean… Did your father leave you any kind of… instructions? It was his… hunt, to find Pandora?"

"Dad," Kaito blinked repeatedly. "That's a… Yes. We could… I could… I should check… I could check the records. Perhaps he did leave some… I just… I never…"

Tilting his head, Shinichi wondered what to do to make Kaito feel better. He reached out, interlacing his fingers with Kaito's and squeezing his hand. Another sigh and Kaito rested his head against Shinichi's shoulder, squeezing back on Shinichi's hand.

"I never thought about what to do when I'd actually find it," Kaito admitted. "I always thought… Kaitou KID's purpose is to find the gem before the Black Organization could, and to destroy it before they can use it. That was the determination of a naive young boy."

Shinichi tilted his head so it was resting against Kaito's. "Was it?"

"It's a magical cursed gem that, as you just saw, somehow glows in the moonlight. Who knows what it does when you crack it. If you can even crack it," Kaito sounded serious, thoughtful. "We shouldn't do anything… too quick or irrational…"

"That sounds too reasonable to come from my sneak thief," Shinichi teased.

Turning his head, Kaito pouted at him. "Don't be mean, Shin-chan."

With a grin on his lips did Shinichi lean in to kiss Kaito. "Okay. What do we do?"

"...Put the gem back into the safe for now and go to bed because it's late?" Kaito yawned. "It's too damn late and nothing we do now can't also be done tomorrow?"

A shaky sigh of relief. "That sounds so good, yes. Okay."

"Tomorrow, I'll consult my dad's records," Kaito added after a moment. "But… Don't tell anyone. Not yet. I don't want anyone aside from you and me knowing."

"Naturally," Shinichi ran his thumb over the back of Kaito's hand. "I… wouldn't know what to tell most people anyway. We found a glowing gem, so it might actually be magic. So far, we've operated on the assumption of it just… being an obsession of the BO. That's all the reason we need to hunt for it. But magic… magic is…"

Shinichi made a face. His 'I don't like this' face, as Kaito noticed. He couldn't resist kissing that face. It was a very cute face. And honestly, Kaito could relate. He still disliked the fact that magic was real, he couldn't even begin to grasp how tough this would be on his overly rational detective. Everything in Shinichi's life was logic and science.

"Okay, let's get sleepy detectives and thieves into bed," Kaito hopped up and then helped Shinichi up too. "C'mon. I really need sleep. Maybe when we wake up, the gem stops glowing?"

"Yes. Maybe," Shinichi chuckled weakly.

They headed inside together and then split up, Kaito heading to his safe to put the gem away and Shinichi heading to his bathroom to at the very least get a quick shower. Too late for a bath now. Mh. He mourned the loss, but the hot shower did at least something for his sore muscles.

Dressed in his most comfortable pajamas, Shinichi walked right to his bed, just to find it occupied.

"Kaito. You are in the wrong bedroom. And bed."

The thief sprawled out on his bed looked far too comfortable there. And far too much like he belonged there. Shinichi sat down on the edge of his bed, looking at his thief. His fingers found their way into Kaito's temptingly messy hair near on their own. It was so soft. One of the biggest perks of dating Kaito was getting to run his fingers through that hair. Silly, Shinichi knew. Not something he ever thought he'd want. To run his fingers through someone's hair. But this was special hair. Soft hair. And when Shinichi played with it, there was such a pleased look on Kaito's face, like he was just… melting. That, Shinichi also liked. The moment was so serene.

"I found it," Kaito whispered into the calm silence. "I really… did it."

"Yeah," Shinichi tried to keep his voice even. "You found it."

Kaito found the gem his father had died trying to protect. Now they just had the task to figure out what to do with it. That thought weighed heavy on Shinichi's mind. So heavy, in fact, that Shinichi simply laid down, right next to Kaito. As soon as he was down on the bed, Kaito grabbed him by the midsection and pulled him close against himself. Kaito nuzzled his face into the crook of Shinichi's neck, kissing it playfully. His hand rested on Shinichi's stomach.

"I love you," Kaito whispered.

Shinichi frowned, a little surprised by the sudden declaration. "I… I love you too."

"I love you so much," Kaito sat up some, leaning over him, smiling. "You broke me out of prison, Shinichi. You… did that. And let me stay here. And helped me continue my search. Because you trusted me. You trusted my judgment that what I was doing was… breaking the law, but… for a reason. And thanks to you, I… found it. Thanks to you, I was actually able to do it."

Suddenly, he leaned down, kissing Shinichi so fierce and filled with so much passion that it took Shinichi's breath away. As tired as Shinichi had been a second ago, that declaration and that kiss stirred something in him. Filled him with not just a warmth but also with energy. He reached a hand out, cupping first Kaito's cheek but then letting it trail down Kaito's neck and chest. His pajama shirt was open, so Shinichi got to touch bare skin. Kaito's fingers danced down Shinichi's chest and opened the buttons so swiftly, Shinichi didn't even notice. Their kiss broke, both panting against each other, nearly touching still but bringing the barest bit of distance against each other.

"Are we…?" Kaito trailed off some. "Do you want to…?"

"Yes," Shinichi put quite some emphasis behind that, licking his lips.

Not that he'd planned on, but right here, right now? In this moment? With Kaito against him like this, feeling him? When Shinichi licked his lips again, he leaned forward, touching upon Kaito's lips before kissing him once more. With the go-ahead, Kaito's hands wandered deeper, pushing against Shinichi's pants. Shinichi wiggled a little, lifting up his hips more than willingly. His own fingers curled into Kaito's shirt, pulling it off Kaito more harshly. His fingers trailed over Kaito's biceps in appreciation, before pulling him in for another kiss, even deeper than the last.

Soon they both were naked on the bed, hands wandering over each other's bodies. Shinichi gasped as Kaito's fingers graced his nipple. The thief kissed his way down, trailing wet lips over his torso and dipping down his belly. Shinichi arched his back, leaning into the touch. His fingers found their way into Kaito's hair once more when the thief's lips graced his rapidly hardening cock. Oh. Shinichi hissed out a curse when he felt Kaito's lips wrap around him fully. His toes curled at the sensation. A curious tongue teased him along the length, until it reached the tip. Kaito circled it, brushing against the slit until Shinichi was gasping out his name. Until Shinichi couldn't hold back any longer and threw his head back in pleasure, coming hard. Kaito lapped up the last drops of cum with a pleased grin on his lips, looking sated as he sat up.

"Hey," Kaito leaned in to steal a kiss, a shorter one.

Shinichi could taste himself on Kaito's lips, which was a strange sensation too. He tilted his head and leaned back, looking at his thief. Looking at the obvious erection pointing his way. After a moment of hesitation – no, contemplation – Shinichi reached out to grab Kaito and drag him in for the so far longest kiss, at the end of which Kaito was seated between Shinichi's legs. Legs that were spread in invitation. Shinichi emphasized that invitation by reaching out for Kaito's dick, caressing it a few times as he guided it closer. The magician was happy to follow that guidance closer.

"Okay," Shinichi paused, reaching for his nightstand with his free hand. "Hold on."

He noted the wide-eyed open-mouthed expression on Kaito's face when Shinichi pulled a small bottle of lube out and he also noted that his smart-mouthed thief was clever enough not to make any teasing jokes. Because that may end up with a very blue-balled thief. Getting more comfortable, Shinichi coated two of his fingers with lube and pushed them in with practiced ease. He knew his own body, knew what he liked and how to work it. His eyes closed as he gave himself over to it.

"Shin-chan, love the show, but I think if I watch much longer, I'll just-"

Huffing, Shinichi pulled his fingers out of himself and reached once more into his nightstand to throw a condom at Kaito. He was not going to tell Kaito where he'd gotten those from though. Kaito scrambled to put the condom on and then grasped Shinichi's thighs. Careful and gentle. He was slow as he pushed in, inch by inch, both gasping near simultaneously at the sensation of being united like this, of feeling the other like this. Their hands grasped each other, holding each other, pulling closer as Kaito pushed in deeper, becoming more one. Their lips met again when Kaito was as deep inside his detective as he could. Both, their hips and their mouths moved at the same time.

Kissing, biting, thrusting, touching. It was unlike anything Shinichi had ever experienced and he was glad to share it with Kaito. He bit down on Kaito's shoulder when the thief picked up the pace, clearly building up toward his orgasm. And when Kaito came, he thrust as deep and hard as he could, gasping out Shinichi's name against the detective's cheek.

Both collapsed in a breathless heap, satisfied and together.

Author's note: As you may have noticed, this chapter came a little late. Delayed due to me being sick. Still sick, but ya know, got some writing done in between. I got for you, one magic gem and some smut to make up for the wait! ;D Next chapter, time to investigate Pandora!
