Becky's POV:

As soon as I woke up Tuesday morning, I grabbed my phone and called Spike. He picked up the call on the second or third ring.

"Hello?" He asked. He sounded really tired.

"Spike? It's Becky. You want to meet at the pond? We can go fishing, swim, go in the pond on a canoe. Anything you want to do, I'm up for it."

"We can go to the pond. I actually need some downtime. Especially after yesterday's game. Just be at the pond around 10:30."

"Ok." I hung up the phone and started to get dressed. I just put on a light blue and white plaid jacket and a light blue tank top. Then I grabbed my Nike white sneakers and a thing of sunscreen. I grabbed my backpack and put something to eat in there, just in case we got hungry. Then I got in the go kart and drove to the pond.

When I got there, Spike was already there, throwing rocks in the pond, letting them skip across the water. "Hey, I'm here."

He turned around and grinned at me. "Hey, Becks. Yesterday sure was fun, wasn't it?"

"You bet. I haven't had that much fun with the Trojans football team in... in... well, in forever!" I said.

"So, I already got a canoe ready to go, if you want to. You don't have to, if you don't want to."

"No, I want to." I said, as we stepped into the canoe. We grabbed the paddles and pushed the canoe out to the middle of the pond.

I set down my backpack in the middle of the canoe. I pulled out two chicken salad sandwiches. "Hey, I made you a lunch. Here."

"Yeah! Thanks, Becks." He leaned over and placed his lips on mine.

And then I remembered something. I remembered back in 1994 when Junior and I were sitting on the log. We saw that couple in the canoe, making out. I realized that Spike and I are turning into that couple, but honestly, I don't mind it.

We stayed like that for about 4 or 5 minutes before we pulled apart and started eating our lunch. "Here. I brought you some Nacho Cheese Doritos."

"Gee thanks, Becks." He said, grabbing them out of my hand.

"You're welcome." All of the sudden, I heard someone yelling that sounded somewhat familiar. So I stood up in the canoe, to see if I could see who it was. Then the canoe started to rock.

One quick motion, of me sitting down, tipped us out of the canoe. It also tipped the canoe upside down. "Becks! Are you ok?" Spike asked, as he swam over to me.

"Yeah, I'm ok." I said, trying to get my hair out of my face. "Oh no!" I realized that when the canoe tipped, my backpack when out.

"What's wrong?"

"My backpack, it sunk. Do you have your waterproof flashlight on you?"

"Yeah." He handed it to me.

I held my breath and went down into the pond water. It took forever to find it, so when I saw dark blue shining off the flashlight, I grabbed it and went back up the surface. "Did you find it?"

"Yeah. Here, let's push the canoe back to the shore." We got behind it and just pushed it all the way back. Then when we got on the shore, we dragged it over to where they keep the other ones and flipped it beside one of them. "We should probably just go to my house."

"Ok." He said, as he put on his bike helmet. He grabbed his blue and sliver bike, that was propped up against a tree.

I hopped in the go kart, even though I was soaking wet and drove home. When we got to my house, we walked straight into the bathrooms in my house.

There's two. One in my bedroom and one in the hallway. Spike took the one in the hallway; I took mine.

I washed my hair. I washed my body. Then I got out of the shower, and went to try and find something to put on.

I wasn't wanting to be a prissy or cutesy girl, so I just put on a blue sweatshirt and and a pair of grey sweatpants. I sat down on the couch and turned on the tv.

"Becks! Can you come here, please?" I heard Spike shout from the bathroom.

"What's up?" I asked, as he stuck his wet head out the door, just an inch.

"Can you find me some clothes to wear? The ones I have are wet."

"Oh, I'm sorry! I will, just let me go grab some of dad's clothes." I walked to my dad and Patty's room and started to rifle through dad's dresser. I pulled out a short sleeved t-shirt and a pair of jeans. "Here."

"Thanks. I'll be out in a minute or two. Then I'll come sit down on the couch with you." He grabbed the clothes and shut the door back.

A few minutes later, he came out of the bathroom. His hair was damp. "You want to watch a sport movie?" I asked.

"Hmm. How about The Benchwarmers or Little Big League?" He asked, holding out two VHS tapes.

"The Benchwarmers. It's hilarious." I said, as he put the tape in. Then he went into the kitchen and popped some popcorn.

Once it was started, he came back to the couch and sat back down next to me. The whole movie went by quickly and we had a few good laughs.

Then the front door opened and Dad, Patty, Junior, Kaden, and Brian walked in. "Hey, guys. What's up?" Dad asked. "Watcha watching?"

"The Benchwarmers." I said, eating some more of the popcorn. Mmm, buttery, delicious popcorn.

"That's a good movie." Junior said, grabbing some of the popcorn.

I glared at him and gave him and my family a death stare that clearly said, 'Get out of here. Now.'

My dad understood and quickly walked into his room, with Patty not too far behind. Kaden and Brian followed Junior to his room.

"I had fun today. Even if we did tip over the canoe." Spike said, as he turned to me.

"Same here." I got up and hugged him.

"Well, I'll see you later, Becks. Dad wants me to come home. He didn't say why, but I promise, I'll call you tonight." He kissed me on the lips then walked out the door.

I picked up the trash and threw it all in the trash can. Then I put the VHS tape back in its case. Then I went into my room and started to read my new book.

Spike's POV:

I woke up as soon the light from the sun hit my face. I rubbed my fingers on my eyelids. Then I heard something ringing in the distance and I thought it was my alarm clock. But when I looked, it wasn't even working!

Then I realized that the phone in the hallway was ringing. I looked at my watch on my nightstand and it was barely even 10 o'clock!

I stumbled out into the hallway and answered the phone. "Hello?" I felt as tired as I sounded.

"Spike? It's Becky. You want to meet up at the pond? We can go fishing, swim, go in the pond on a canoe. Anything you want to do, I'm up for it."

"We can go to the pond. I actually need some downtime. Especially after yesterday's game. Just be at the pond around 10:30."

"Ok." Then she hung up the phone. I decided to start getting ready. I just put on something simple; a short sleeved t-shirt and a pair of gray cargo shorts.

I walked outside to get my bike out of the garage. I strapped on my helmet before I got on. I got there in about five minutes and started skipping rocks on the water to pass the time by. I went head and got canoe all set

"Hey, I'm here." Her voice sounded a sweet as lemonade and it made me feel all tingly inside.

I turned around to face her and grinned at her. "Hey, Becks. Yesterday sure was fun, wasn't it?"

"You bet. I haven't had that much fun with the Trojans football team in... in... well, in forever."

"So, I already got a canoe ready to go, if you want to. You don't have to, if you don't want to." I said.

"No, I want to." She said, as we both stepped into the canoe. We grabbed the paddles and pushed the canoe out to the middle of the pond.

She sat her backpack in the middle of the canoe. She pulled out two chicken salad sandwiches. "Hey, I made you a lunch. Here."

"Yeah! Thanks, Becks!" I exclaimed, as I leaned over and kissed her.

We stayed in that position for a few minutes before we pulled apart. Then we started to eat our lunch. "Here. I brought you some Nacho Cheese Doritos." Becky held out a bag of them.

"Gee thanks, Becks." I grabbed them out of her hand.

"You're welcome." She said. Then she got a weird look of her face and before I could ask what was wrong, she was standing up in the canoe. The canoe started to rock, so she quickly sat down. But the movement of her sitting down that quick, it tipped the canoe into the pond.

"Becks!" I shouted, swimming over to her. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah, I'm ok." She said. Then she began to look distressed. "Oh no!"

"What's wrong?"

"When the canoe tipped, my backpack fell and I guess it sunk, because it's not floating. Do you have your waterproof flashlight on you?"

"Yeah." I took it out of my shorts pocket.

She went down under the water and came back up, about three minutes later, with her backpack in hand. "Did you find it?"

"Yeah. Here, let's push the canoe back to the shore." We went behind it and pushed it all the way up, until we heard the hollow scraping sound of rocks on the bottom of the canoe. "We should probably just go to my house."

"Ok." I put my bike helmet on and hopped on my bike. She got in her go kart and drove home. As soon as we got there, we both had to take showers. I went in the hallway shower and she took the shower in her bedroom.

After I was done with my shower and I'd washed my hair, I realized that I didn't have a pair of backup clothes. "Becks! Can you come here, please?" I shouted, barely sticking my head out the door, but enough to where she couldn't see the rest of me.

She came around the corner, wearing a blue sweatshirt and grey sweatpants. "What's up?"

"Can you find me some clothes to wear? The ones I have are wet."

"Oh, I'm sorry! I will, just let me go get some of dad's clothes." She came back a few minutes later with a short sleeved t-shirt and a pair of jeans. "Here."

"Thanks. I'll be out in a minute or two. Then I'll come sit down on the couch with you." I grabbed the clothes and shut the door then I put the clothes on in the bathroom.

I walked into the living room, my hair still a little wet, and sat down on the couch next to Becky. "You want to watch a sports movie?" She asked, just as I sat down.

I walked over to where they kept the movies. "Hmm. How about The Benchwarmers or Little Big League?" I held two up so she could see them.

"The Benchwarmers. It's hilarious." She said, as I slid the tape in. Then I went to the kitchen to pop some popcorn.

Once the movie was started, I came back to the couch and sat down next to her. The movie went by quicker than we thought it would. We laughed a lot, especially at the bit when Nelson managed to fart in that kid, Kyle's, mouth.

Then out of nowhere, the front door opened and in stepped, Coach Danny, his wife, Patty, Junior, Brian, and Kaden. "Hey, guys." Coach Danny grinned at us. "Watcha watching?"

"The Benchwarmers." Becky said, as she ate some of the popcorn.

"That's a good movie." Junior reached over and stuck his hand in the popcorn bowl.

I noticed that Becky had turned towards her family and not more than a minute later, they were all headed to their rooms.

"I had fun today. Even if we did tip over the canoe." I said as I turned to her.

"Same here." She got up and hugged me.

"Well, I'll see you later, Becks. Dad wants me to come home. He didn't say why, but I promise, I'll call you later." With that, I kissed her on her lips then walked out the door.

I hopped on my bike and rode back to my house. When I got there, I propped my bike up on some boxes in the garage then walked in my house, through the garage door.

"That you, son?" I heard my dad ask, and he didn't sound normal. Which could only mean one thing. He's either drunk or has someone over at the house. It could be both, who knows.

"Yeah, it's me." I walked into the living room, to find my dad, drunk as a skunk.

"Where's dinner? I thought I told you to get dinner before you came home!" He shouted.

I gulped. "No, sir. You didn't. You called and told me to be home, but you never asked me to get dinner." I knew what was coming, but I tried my best to avoid it.

"You calling me a liar? Get over here. RIGHT NOW!" He stood up and took off his belt. He stumbled over to me and started swinging.

Anywhere he could hit me, he hit me. He hit me the places he hit me yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that. I've got so many bruises; it's literally so painful.

When I didn't know what to do, I reached out and hit him, making him fall. "Spike! You get back here!"

I bolted out the garage door and grabbed my bike as quick as I could. Then I rode my bike all the way bike to Becks house.

I set my bike up against a tree then walked to the backyard, where her room is. I knocked on her window. I saw her part the curtains and stare at me, through the window.

Becky's POV:

What is that I hear? Is someone knocking on my window? It's really late, who'd be knocking on my window at this time of night?

I got up and parted my curtains so I could see who was outside my window. I saw Spike, just standing in front of my window. He'd just left no too long go, so that's kind of confusing me.

I walked out my bedroom and out the back door. "Spike? Are you ok? What's wrong?" When I got up closer, I noticed that he had tear marks on his cheeks. "Why were you crying? Spike, is something really wrong?"

"I can't go back there, Becks. I just can't." He sobbed into my shoulder.

"Wait, hang on. Spike, you're not making any sense. You can't go back where?"

"Go back home. My dad has been abusing me." He then pulled up my dad's shirt, and I saw bruises all over his stomach.

Tears prickled in the corner of my eyes. "Why didn't you tell me? I would've helped you. Spike, I love you."

Tears spilled down his cheeks. "I know. I love you too, Becks. Can I stay here, just for the time being?"

"You know you can. If you ever need somewhere to stay, this will always be your home away from home. But I think your dad, he might need help."

"You ain't the only one. I've always known that." He said. Then he yawned. "Well, I think I'm going to get some sleep. I hope you sleep good."

I went into my room and grabbed him a blanket. "Here's a blanket."

"Thanks, Becks. Sleep good."

"You're welcome. And thanks." I said, as I went to my own bedroom to finally get some sleep. But I couldn't sleep, because I was up most of the night, thinking about what would happen if he went back to his house. Before his dad got the help he needed.

Whenever that day comes, we'll be ready for it.
