"Okay Kate, why did you want me to meet you here at your office?" Mary asked as she got off the elevator, only to notice the headache Kate was clearly nursing.

"There's only one person who could have you nursing a headache this late. You ran into dad didn't you?" Mary asked and Kate nodded.

"And I basically disowned him in every way besides legally. He finally pushed me too far." Kate said.

"I know it's not really my place, but since there's a good chance that my mom and I are going to get caught in the middle of whatever fight dad is no doubt going to try to pick with you, I have to ask, is there any chance of you and dad talking it out?" Mary asked.

"Not unless he gets a new personality blown into him. Mary, you don't understand how he treated me after the accident, since after all, it's not like I was really around much when we were kids." Kate said.

"Then help me understand." Mary said, since honestly, this was something that had been driving her crazy for years.

"After the accident, dad completely changed. He was cold and distant to me, like he blamed me for surviving the accident while mom and Beth didn't. The first thing he did after the funeral was ship me off to a boarding school on the other side of the country and do you know how I found out he and your mom were dating when I came home?" Kate asked.

"Please tell me it was before you came back to the apartment to find my mom and I living there?" Mary groaned.

"Nope. And then it was your mom who pulled me aside and did everything she could to assure me that she wasn't trying to take my mom's place in my life and that you weren't trying to replace Beth. She'd even tried to convince my dad to let me return to regular school in Gotham with you, but." Kate said.

"He wouldn't hear of it and said you were lucky he let you come home for the holidays. I always thought that it was because he was rejecting your sexuality." Mary said.

"No, if that were the case, there's no way he'd be leading the Crows right now. He just had to blame someone else for what happened to my mom and Beth so he wouldn't have to feel guilty about not saving them. And he chose two people to put the blame on. Batman and me. That's why even when I was home, I never spent much time at the penthouse, I preferred to crash at my friends' places. And even being the top student at one of the toughest military schools in the country wasn't enough for that man. I finally decided that I don't need him in my life right now, so I cut him out of it." Kate said.

"Okay, got it and I definitely know which side I'll be taking in the fight." Mary said.

"Good, because that brings us to the reason I asked you to come here." Kate said.

"What's so important?" Mary asked as Kate got up from behind her desk and walked over to the display case containing her Aunt Martha's pearl necklace.

"So, is that something you're keeping or is it up for grabs?" Mary asked.

"The only person who's allowed to remove this necklace from its case is Bruce. The necklace belonged to his mom. In fact, she was wearing it the night she and my Uncle Thomas were killed. It's what the robber stole from them. Bruce spent years and millions of dollars to get it back. Though I might relocate it to Wayne Manor where it will be more secure, in the meantime." Kate said as she proceeded to open the secret elevator.

"Why is there a hidden elevator in your office?" Mary asked.

"Technically it was put in during Bruce's time. I promise, it'll all make sense when we get downstairs. Hopefully." Kate said as she dragged Mary inside.

"Where are we going?" Mary asked as the elevator closed.

"You'll see." Kate said with a smile, wondering what Mary's reaction would be when she saw where they were going.
