Guest W: I'm glad you think so. Your comment loaded in very late for me, that's why I didn't write about it. I haven't quite decided on the pairing.
By the way, you can picture Midoriya's Green Lantern outfit in anyway you want. For me, I picture the John Stewart GL suit from the Snyder Cut photo.
This story is now cross-posted on Ao3 under the same name for both title and author.
All Might and many pro heroes were seated in stands watching over the hearing that was starting soon. Every government official was there making preparations for the one man this was all for.
Izuku Midoriya.
This was the most important event in recent times, with the last one being Toshinori's big debut over two decades ago. When the senators heard about the crashed alien ship, every one of them came flying back to Japan to be part of the hearing. A bigger force was needed the amount of officials here, so the government had just called the top one hundred heroes in Japan to oversee security.
As everyone waited for the man of the hour to arrive, they all talked to each other to pass the time.
"I wonder how this will all go." Manual said.
"Who cares, I just hope this thing will be quick." Miruko said disinterested.
"I highly doubt that Miruko. This has to do with aliens and the green man, this may go on for a couple of hours." Fat Gum told her, eating some chicken from a bucket.
"Where did you get that?" Gang Orca asked.
"From the new food court. They just installed one recently, and they have some pretty good selections. Including fish." Fat Gum answered.
"Hmm, I'll be right back. Save my spot for me." He requested before leaving.
All Might sat in silence, an action mirrored by Endeavor who sat next to him. All Might reluctantly took a day off from crime fighting to attend the full hearing in his muscle form, having only buffed up a few minutes ago in a private room. He was briefed by Nezu earlier in the day about Izuku potentially teaching at U.A. like him. He wasn't sure about Midoriya taking on the role, but Nezu explained his reasons with Toshinori unfortunately agreeing with some of them. Izuku Midoriya was the world's greatest expert in space now and had a vast knowledge of the cosmos, including its threats.
"Hey Kamui, is it true about the green guy stopping a bank robbery today?" Mt. Lady asked.
"Unfortunately, yes. He got there before I and some other pros did. He already dealt with the perpetrators and helped the civilians before he repaired all the damage caused by the fight." Kamui Woods said.
"Wait, repaired? How did he do that? Death Arms questioned.
"Apparently that ring of his can fix anything broken. You have no idea how jealous I was when I saw him do it." Kamui told them.
"He can do that!? We wouldn't have to worry so much about collateral damage if we had something like that." Mt. Lady groaned.
All Might had finally spoken up. "He did all that?"
"Yeah. Some newbie wanted to arrest him for vigilantism, but legally couldn't because of his quirkless status or something." Kamui Woods said.
"Quirkless? But what about those light constructs he made?" Hawks piped up.
"Do none of you know who he is?" All Might asked.
"Nope. Didn't get to listen to the news this morning." Death Arms said with others agreeing.
"Do you know who he is?" Kamui asked All Might.
"He's the young boy that disappeared after the slime villain attack. His name is Izuku Midoriya." He revealed.
"Wait... the quirkless kid?" Mt. Lady asked.
"That's impossible. The man is too old to be him." Death Arms said.
"It's true, we were there for the interrogation. Check the reports yourself if you don't believe us." Endeavor spoke for the first time.
As the pros were about to question the truth, a voice popped into their heads with a warning.
'This is Mandalay. Izuku Midoriya has arrived.' She broadcasted to all the heroes at the conference.
It was about to begin.
Izuku had just left home after promising his mother he'd be back. No doubt she'd be watching him on the news at the hearing. He flew through Japan like a shooting star before arriving right above the Senate building. There were hundreds of people down below with some news vans stationed at the barricades where numerous heroes patrolled. Midoriya took a deep breath before going down.
"Show time." He told himself.
He descended as people from below took notice of him with news crews filming his descent. He softly landed with onlookers going wild behind the police barricades, with signs both welcoming and shunning. He even saw some prejudiced signs about him being quirkless. He ignored them and instead continued to the entrance flanked by many pro heroes who eyed him as he passed.
He entered and walked through the halls with many people in suits watching him warily. Having a hero force this huge put some people on edge, though with Izuku they shouldn't have to be. He stopped in front of the big doors where the hearing would take place and pushed them open with both hands.
Every voice quieted down as he passed each row filled with people. They all watched him walk down the row where an empty table and chair sat, facing the government heads and cameras. Izuku gently pulled the seat out before sitting and faced the government waiting.
"... Izuku Midoriya, thank you for joining us today." The Prime Minister said.
"Thank you for having me." Izuku nodded.
"Today Mr. Midoriya you will be answering all of our questions with the full truth and nothing but the truth. Do you understand?" He asked.
"I do, sir." Izuku affirmed.
"Nine months ago you were abducted by an alien artifact, can you tell us why?" He questioned.
"Yes, I can. What took me from Earth long ago was a Green Lantern ring. These rings are sent out into the galaxy to find worthy individuals and bring them back home to Oa. I was one of the chosen." Izuku answered.
"Mr. Midoriya, what are Green Lanterns?" A congresswoman asked.
"Green Lanterns are an intergalactic police force that patrol the entire universe as peacekeepers. The universe is split into thirty-six hundred sectors, each guarded by a Green Lantern." Izuku said.
There were murmurs amongst the crowd about the news. The heroes that were there for the investigation the day before stayed quiet.
"So there are thirty-six hundred Lanterns in the universe?" An HPSC Chairman asked.
"No, there's twice that amount. Most of the Lanterns are honor guards who patrol the entire universe instead of one sector. Those who aren't honor guards share their sectors split into equal territory." Izuku responded.
"How come we've never seen a Green Lantern before?" The Prime Minister questioned.
"Because our planet has never really been in trouble enough for a Green Lantern to show up." Izuku said.
A part of All Might was glad that Earth was never in too much danger for a Green Lantern to show up. Another part of him was angry that All for One wasn't seen as a threat to them though.
"What about the Green Lantern before you? Who were they?" The Congresswoman asked.
"The Green Lantern before me was a Martian from Mars. He was a Green Lantern for over a hundred years before he perished in battle and the ring returned to Oa, which was then sent back out into our sector of the universe where it would eventually find me." Izuku revealed.
"A Martian!? Martians existed!?" A congressman exclaimed.
People talked loudly to one another about Aliens having lived so close to them for so long.
"How is it we haven't seen Martians from our rover images yet one was a Green Lantern?" The Prime Minister inquired.
"The Martians unfortunately had a civil war that killed off the majority race. The last Martian alive was J'onn J'onzz, who became the next Green Lantern after the last one perished as well." Izuku said.
"Do Green Lanterns always die in the line of duty?" He asked.
"Not all of them, no. Some do die of old age or retire from the corps, but almost all of them chose to stay a Green Lantern until the very end." Izuku stated.
"Why spend their entire life fighting as a Green Lantern?" The HPSC Chairman asked.
"It's seen as one of the highest honors and duty to be chosen as a Green Lantern. I don't know what greater purpose there is than being one." Izuku spoke.
"So the Lanterns are well known throughout the universe?" The Congresswoman queried.
"Yes, they are. The Green Lantern Corps has been protecting the universe for three billion years, they are known to many planets as great defenders. In simplest terms, we're pretty much space cops." Izuku answered.
Everyone in the room began shouting about the revealed history of the Green Lanterns. The pros couldn't comprehend a galactic force lasting that long, with All Might beginning to like the Green Lanterns.
"Off topic, but I would like to know why you were much older when you were a teenager nine months ago?" The Congresswoman asked.
"Time works differently on other planets, mam. For you I've been gone for nine months, I've lived thirteen years in the many planets I've been to over my career." Izuku explained.
"While that is fascinating, I believe it's time we get to the most important question." The Prime Minister said.
"The ring." Izuku assumed.
"Yes. You hold a powerful alien object, one our government and many others want to get their hands on." He said.
"That's true sir, but trust me when I say I'm doing you a favor by keeping it out of the world's hands." Izuku stated.
A small uproar from government officials started but was quickly silenced by the Prime Minister.
"Now why is that, Mr. Midoryia?" He inquired.
"Sir, even if I hand this over no one else on the planet can use it but me, only the ring allows the original wielder to use it. Even if you gather the smartest minds on the planet, they wouldn't be able to crack it." Izuku revealed.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"I'm saying they would be stuck in a constant loop of building the tools to make the tools to building the other tools to analyze it. It would take them hundreds of lifetimes to even figure out how it functions." Izuku explained.
"So you won't hand it over to the government?" He argued.
"No sir, I cannot. This ring was entrusted to me by the guardians. It's one with me until the day I die." Izuku stated.
"... if you refuse to hand it over, then what will you do?" He questioned.
"Patrol my sector and keep it safe. I'm not your enemy sir, we are on the same side. All I ask is let me do my job and protect those who can't protect themselves." Izuku answered earnestly.
Murmurs were thrown around as the Prime Minister sat for a minute in silence.
"You do know you will be breaking many vigilante laws by acting like a hero." The HPSC Chairman said.
"Funny enough, the laws for vigilantism are non-existent for the quirkless. There's also nothing about the prohibiting of alien objects. So in the eyes of the law, I am technically innocent." Izuku revealed.
The HPSC Chairman glared at Midoriya with the other agents joining him.
"You know that may change soon, Mr. Midoriya." The Prime Minister said.
"I know, sir. All I ask is for the chance to prove to you that I'm needed." Izuku requested.
"... we shall see. I hereby consider this hearing at an end. Thank you everyone for coming." He announced.
Shouts of disagreement were thrown around the room by government officials at the sudden dismissal. Pro-heroes went to bring order to the riot while the ones in that stand watched from above.
"This went by faster than I thought." Fat Gum sweatdropped.
"Finally! I'm going down there in case any action happens." Miruko said before jumping down.
"What I don't understand is why didn't the ring choose anyone else?" Death Arms questioned.
"What do you mean, Death Arms?" All Might glared.
"I'm just saying there were many pros who were there that day, including you All Might. Why didn't the ring choose any one of us instead of some quirkless kid." He tried to defend himself.
"He's right though. Wouldn't it be better if someone with a quirk had a ring like that?" Mt. Lady said.
"I don't believe a quirk would benefit from my ring. At least, not all of them would." A voice spoke up.
They all turned their heads to see Izuku floating beside their box leaning up against the wall.
"What do you mean, Midoriya?" All Might asked.
"It would probably work more with physical quirks, but I don't think it would be that many. I know a few Green Lanterns who possess abilities similar to quirks, but haven't been able to enhance their powers with their rings." Izuku said.
"And to answer your question as to why I got the ring instead of any of you, is because my willpower was far greater than all of yours." Izuku told.
"What does willpower have to do with it?" Kamui Woods asked.
"Will is what powers every Green Lantern ring in existence. They seek out those with great will that can overcome any fear they face." Izuku said.
"How does Will give power to something like that?" Mt. Lady questioned.
"The guardians spent countless millennia finding the greatest power source in the universe and found that Willpower was the greatest one there is. Once they figured out how to harness it they created the rings with the power of Will inside it, allowing its wielder to create anything they could imagine if they could Will it." Izuku explained.
"So when you say anything..." Death Arms trailed.
"I mean anything. I have a powerful imagination and a lot of Will to go along with it." Izuku stated.
"Did you come up here to gloat boy?" Endeavor growled.
"No, I came for All Might. Could we speak in private?" Izuku asked.
"Of course young Midoryia." All Might said.
The two ventured off out of the room leaving the pro heroes to contemplate the power of a Green Lantern.
"... he could replace us anytime he wanted to." Death Arms muttered.
"Oh don't be like that Death Arms. He seems like an alright guy enough to not do something like that." Fat Gum assured him with a pat on the back.
Endeavor by himself glared at their retreating forms. He didn't like that a child was chosen by a power as dangerous as that ring, and couldn't understand why anyone else like him wasn't chosen.
He's going to have to up Shouto's training when he returns home.
13 Years Ago on Oa:
Izuku was blasted out of the air and landed harshly on the floor. His body smoked slightly from the attack, groaning as he struggled to get up.
"Come on you poozer, get up! The enemy wouldn't waste the chance to kill you right now when you're sleeping there! Are you a quitter!" A deep voice shouted.
"No Sargent Graxon, sir!" Izuku shouted back.
With a surge of energy, he got back up to face his bulldog-faced opponent and constructed a green pillar before throwing it at Graxon. Instead of dodging, Graxon summoned a large drill that turned the pillar to dust, then reformed then into a boulder and hurled it at Midoriya. He quickly thought of a baseball bat and smashed the boulder with it, shattering it into thousands of pieces.
Unfortunately, his entire vision was clouded by the debris as he didn't see Graxon shooting for him until he saw a big fist part come out of the cloud hitting him in the face. Izuku was flung across the room hitting his back against a wall, and slowly slid down defeated.
"Let this be a lesson to you other poozers. Never lose sight of your opponent, or you end up looking like shrimp over there." Graxon stated.
"Sir, yes sir!" Other Green Lantern recruits yelled out, with a few cringing from Midoryia's state.
"Good. Now four arms, get into position!" He ordered.
A large buff red-skinned woman with four arms gulped a bit before joining Graxon in the ring. One of the recruits took mercy on Midoriya and quickly flew over to him before helping him up, earning a groan of pain. He looked up with his maskless face to see Arisia Rrab, a blonde elf-like girl who looked close to Izuku's age.
"He sure is brutal, huh Midoriya." She said.
"No kidding, I'm seeing birds fly around me." He groaned.
Arisia giggled at his joke making him blush, even more so when she hustled him up and wrapped her arms around him.
"You know you can carry me with your ring instead." Izuku said embarrassed.
"I haven't quite figured out the whole construct thing yet. Wouldn't want to accidentally have it disappear and drop you." She joked.
"It took me a week to figure it out, so you'll get the hang of it soon enough." Izuku said with certainty.
The two were interrupted when the four-armed woman was sent barreling after them making the two jump out of the way, with the woman smashing against the same wall Midoriya smashed earlier.
"Let that be another lesson, always be aware of your surroundings. If Raava wasn't so focused on my constructs, she would've seen my fist coming from a mile away." Graxon instructed.
"Uh sir, I think Raava is out cold." Arisia nervously piped up.
Graxon grunted and came over to see her slumped over on her side. He let out an annoyed growl seeing the strongest recruit out cold.
"I thought Tetramands were supposed to be tough. Fine, take both cadets Midoriya and Raava to the medical wing." He ordered.
"Uh sir, I can't make constructs yet and aren't strong enough to carry them both over." She reasoned.
"Sigh, fine. Diamondhead, go help her take them for treatment and return immediately to resume training." He ordered again.
Diamondhead, whose name was Omax, was a tall man with diamond skin and walked over sighing in relief at not having to face Sargent Graxon yet. He summoned a bubble construct around himself and the others before flying them out of the training arena. They flew through the city of Oa until they reached the medical wing and descended to the front platform. The bubble construct dissipated to create two medical stretches for both Izuku and Raava to lie on.
"You should probably go Arisia, I can handle this myself." Omax told her.
"Are you sure? I don't want-" Arisia was saying.
"Go ahead. We don't want you to get in trouble with Graxon." Izuku assured her.
A reluctant Arisia began to leave, but not before squeezing Izuku's hand reassuringly. The blushing boy watched as she flew off waving at them when Omax led the two injured instead.
"Teenagers." Omax muttered.
"What was that, Omax?" Izuku didn't hear.
"Nothing kid. Let's get you to see some help." He said.
Half an hour later Izuku was lying down on a recovery bed being healed by a medical ray. To kill time Izuku was writing on a special pad he got from his first day on Oa, and was using it as a new hero journal for his training since his backpack was left behind on Earth. Thinking about Earth made Izuku feel a little sad, having missed his mom and watching hero battles.
"Graxon went hard on training again, I see." A familiar voice spoke up.
Izuku was shaken from his thoughts and looked up from his tablet to see Tomar-Re standing near the door.
"What made you guess that?" Izuku asked.
"Well for one, no other training officer can knock out a trainee like Raava. And two, Graxon was complaining at lunch about recruits being too fragile these days." Tomar-Re answered.
"Of course he did. So what brings you here sir?" Midoriya asked.
"I've been keeping up with your progress Midoriya, and I believe it's time for you to go on patrols with me to gain experience." He explained.
"Really! But it took me forever to create a construct weeks ago. Why do I get to go out and not any of the others?" Izuku questioned.
"Yes, you were slow in the beginning. However, you've grown exponentially faster than the others once you managed to figure out how to make a construct. You are at the top of the class with Raava just right behind you." Tomar-Re revealed.
"But she's a lot stronger than me, so why wasn't she chosen?" Izuku asked.
"You saw her in training today. Once she becomes aware of her surroundings, she will be taken out on patrols like you will." He said.
Izuku looked away to ponder the recent news. He looked sadly at Raava's sleeping form across from him, knowing how much someone like her wanted this opportunity. Why did a Deku like him steal this chance from her?
"Do not hate yourself Midoriya. Everyone gets their chance in the Corp, some sooner than others. So what do you say, will join me on my patrol and learn something from it?" Tomar-Re asked him.
"... when do we start?" Izuku asked him back.
Present Day:
All Might and Izuku entered a private room by themselves with Izuku using his ring to scan the room.
"What are you doing?" All Might asked.
Izuku stayed silent until he finished and addressed him. "Just checking for any bugs in the room, which there isn't. You can debuff now."
All Might nodded with gratitude before puffing into smoke that dissipated to show Toshinori in his skinny form.
"I thought you would have forgotten about it, being gone for so long." Yagi assumed.
"I could never forget my last day on Earth." Izuku said.
"... listen Midoriya, if you are still upset about-" Yagi was saying.
"I already told you All Might, I forgave you long ago. That's not what I wanted to talk about." Izuku told him.
"Then what is it?" Toshinori asked.
"I was offered a teaching job at U.A. from Nezu earlier today." Izuku revealed.
"Really!? Why are you telling me this?" All Might asked him.
"Unfortunately, I forgot to ask Nezu for his number and I'm not sure if U.A. will take my calls seriously. I'm assuming you have him as a contact and could tell him I would like to take the test tomorrow." Izuku requested
"Absolutely, but what kind of test are you taking?" Yagi asked.
"Well I never got to finish my education before I left, so Nezu went and created a test after getting the okay from the higher-ups. If I pass, I will have graduated with a high school diploma and be allowed to work at U.A." He explained.
"Is that so? Well, I'm not supposed to tell anyone this Midoriya, but I'll make an exception for you since you'll be teaching soon. I'm going to teach there as well." Yagi revealed.
"You are!? Well then, I guess I'll see you very soon again All Might." Izuku said offering his hand.
"We'll be coworkers soon, call me Toshinori Yagi." All Might said shaking his hand.
"Okay, All Might." Izuku joked, making Yagi shake his head.
It was the next morning when Izuku woke up to see his mother already awake making breakfast. He didn't complain much since she made Katsudon, his favorite dish that he hadn't eaten in a very long time. As they ate Izuku received a text message from an unknown number, telling him the test was ready. He assumed this was Nezu since he asked All Might for both his and Nezu's numbers last night before he left. He had his ring connected to his old phone Mom kept after All Might returned it personally on the day of his disappearance. He bid farewell to his Mom after helping clean the dishes and flew off straight to U.A.
On his way over he stopped a couple of criminals in a car chase with the police and even grabbed a balloon out of the sky to return to a child who accidentally released it. He made it to the school and dropped in front of the entrance before pressing on a buzzer, waving to the security camera watching him. The gates opened automatically revealing the same homeless man from yesterday waiting for him.
"Good morning, Eraserhead." Izuku greeted.
"Morning." He said sounding tired.
"Rough night?" He asked entering.
"It's always a rough night." Eraserhead answered.
They walked in silence through the hallways until they reached a locked door. Eraserhead took an ID card and swiped it in front of the scanner unlocking the door, pushing it open and letting Midoriya go in first. He entered to see a big classroom that would fit in more with a college rather than a high school. He saw principal Nezu down below on the side sitting at a large desk by himself.
"Welcome to U.A. Mr. Midoriya." Nezu greeted.
"Good morning Principal Nezu. Is this where I'll be taking the test?" Izuku asked.
"Yes, and if you pass you will be spending much of your time here." Nezu told him.
"... this will be my classroom? It's pretty big for the standard high school class." Izuku commented.
"That it is. I decided your class would work much better as an elective instead of a mandatory requirement." Nezu explained.
"You think this many students will want to attend my class?" Izuku asked.
"I know many of our current students will be interested in joining your curriculum. It will most likely be freshmen that apply for your class anyway." Nezu said.
He then pulled out a large packet of papers out of nowhere and dropped it in front of Midoriya. It was four inches thick and made a heavy sound when it slammed on the desk.
"... this is the test?" Izuku dreaded.
"Oh yes! You've missed out on your entire high school education and some of your finals in middle school." Nezu smiled evilly.
"And you made this in a day?" Izuku questioned.
"It took me an entire afternoon to create it. Tell us when you have finished your test and stay so I can tell you if you got the job after I grade it." Nezu said.
The chimera hopped off the chair and left the classroom, leaving Izuku alone with the four thousand-page test. Sighing, Izuku grabbed a pencil from the table and took the test before sitting down at a student's desk. He opened to page one and began the long tedious process that will drive any student crazy.
Outside of the room, Nezu walked away with Eraserhead following him.
"It's going to take him the entire day to finish that test, you know." Eraserhead commented.
"You never know Shota. For some, the test only takes a couple hours to finish." Nezu said.
Eraserhead only shook his head, not believing that anyone could finish a test like that in only a few hours.
Only to be proven wrong two hours later when he, Present Mic, Midnight, and Nezu were in his office going over applications, the phone began to ring interrupting them. Nezu picked it up and put it on speaker.
"Are you finished, Midoriya?" Nezu asked.
"I am, sir." Izuku said
"Great! I'll be down in a second." Nezu said before disconnecting.
"Wait, who was that?" Present Mic asked.
"I was waiting to reveal him when everyone came in today if he passes the test." Nezu said.
"Midoriya... wait a minute! Isn't he that Green Lantern guy from last night's government hearing?" Midnight asked.
"That he is, Midnight." Nezu told her.
"Why is he here?" Present Mic asked.
"That's not important. How could he have finished that test so fast? Was he cheating?" Shota questioned.
"He wasn't. Take a look for yourself." Nezu said.
He spun his computer monitor around to show the three a viewing of the classroom where Izuku was taking his test.
"I planted a camera in there earlier to make sure he couldn't cheat. Throughout the entire video I watched, he hasn't once shown me any kind of suspicious activity while taking it." Nezu revealed.
"HOLY COW! THAT'S THE TEST HE WAS TAKING!?" Present Mic screamed.
"That would've taken me a week to finish!" Midnight exclaimed.
"Yet it only took Mr. Midoriya a few hours to finish. Eraserhead, take me to him." Nezu requested.
He jumped onto Shota's shoulder and they left the two teachers to ponder Midoriya's presence. It wasn't long before they reached the classroom and entered to find Midoriya playing darts with a construct. His packet lying down on the teacher's desk.
"I'll give it to you Principal Nezu. That was the hardest test I have ever taken in my life." Izuku stated.
"I'm glad then. Eraserhead, you may go." Nezu said.
He hopped down when Shota left and sat at the desk, taking the packet and flipping through each page. It would've taken a normal reader a week to read through the whole thing, but Nezu's quirk allowed him to process everything faster and simply finish reading in half an hour. He set the packet down gently on the table and stood in his seat with Midoriya across from him. He reached out a paw for Izuku to shake.
"Congratulations, Mr. Midoryia. You have now graduated high school." Nezu said.
"When do I start?" Izuku asked with a smile.
Btw, since Izuku won't be in Class 1-A, I'm going to put an oc in his place. I thought about Shinso, but I couldn't figure out a way for him to get in legitimately. Plus, I wouldn't know what to do with his character after that, he would just be there. Anyways, see you next week.
