The Painful Truth - Chapter 31: Security Fallout

.

Friday, November 4 (Continued):

Late Evening, Akito's Rooms, Ootori Estate:

signs and symptoms of complicated grief may include intense sorrow, pain, and rumination over the loss of your loved one…feeling like life holds no meaning or purpose…intense and persistent longing or pining for the deceased…

After what I witnessed on Wednesday, I'm going to recommend that Cho see a grief counselor. She ticks all the boxes for complicated grief which could easily spiral into a major depressive episode.

I don't really know her parents, so I'll talk with Honey, and since I won't see him until Wednesday…nope, they'll be at that ski trip. I'll call him tomorrow. I should let him know some things to look out for.

"Mmmmmmm," Yuki moaned. "There…"

I dug into her calf harder with my thumb and got an even dirtier moan. Looking towards her, I'm treated to a magnificent view of her ass. She's on her stomach with her legs in my lap, and she looks over her shoulder and pouts, "Don't stop."

"Oh," I close my book and let it drop to the floor, "I have no intention of stopping."

She wiggled and squirmed as I ran my hands up her thighs and over her butt. Firm and perky, and all mine. I squeezed with both hands, and she squealed.

.

His hands…

Oh, shit…his hands…

Before I realized what happened, he was lying on top of me, sucking on my neck, his hands on my breasts…then moving lower…

Late Evening, Mori's Car, Headed back to Morinozuka Estate:

After Seoul and the inspection, I was the only one from the taskforce to come out with them tonight, and I'm glad I did. Otherwise, I wouldn't believe what I'm seeing…a complete breakdown in communications between the primary, Takashi, and his security team.

He's supposed to be knowledgeable about tactics and procedures. Why did he start driving like an asshole, which is what you do when you are trying to lose a tail, without informing his or her detail lead?

If this was Hollywood and I was in charge, his employment wouldn't last the night.

.

Finally, the phone rang. I tapped the screen to take it hands-free.

Takashi: "That blue car is following us."

Nagata: "We've been on it since the co-op. Stop trying to lose them. Let us handle it."

Takashi: "What is the plan?"

Nagata: "Three of the follow cars will box them in and force them to stop. We don't want you anywhere near them when we do. Circle back to the confirmed route. The lead and remaining follow cars will pick you up there."

Takashi: That's when I heard a whimper and took my first glance at Haruhi since starting my evasive driving. She's curled up in her seat, face in her hands. Her whole body's shaking.

What have I done?

"Confirmed."

And I hung up.

.

"Follow 2, 3, and 4 – box him in and pull him over. Coordinate with Oshiro-san. He's expecting your call. We're going to get the primaries back to the estate and come back if needed."

"Confirmed."

.

"Haruhi?"

"Tak…" My voice cracked through the tears, so I cleared my throat and tried again. "Takashi?"

"You're safe. Nagata's taking care of it. We're headed home."

I slowly peeked out from behind my hands and saw familiar streets. "They're not behind us anymore?"

"No. They followed us from the Co-op, but the team has them now." He reached over and squeezed my hand, "It's over. You're safe."

Safe.

"How long?"

"We're thirty minutes from home."

.

Ten minutes later, Nagata called back.

"Got them. Press looking for a story. Knew the place was Suoh-sama's and had it staked out. No other cars involved. It's over."

"Confirmed."

By this time, we were back on our original route with the lead car in front and two follow cars behind us.

"It's all over, Haruhi. Everything's fine."

She didn't answer. Didn't take her eyes off her spinning ring.

"Haruhi?"

"OK."

We were both quiet the rest of the drive home.

Late Evening, Akito's Rooms, Ootori Estate:

"I think we both need a shower," I mumbled in her ear after collapsing across her back. I know I at least need a change of pants.

She turned her head, kissed me hard, then whispered in fucking sexy voice, "I'd rather just move to the bed."

My lips met hers, and I'm so tempted…so damn tempted.

.

I'm floating…

I'm on fire…

I'm boneless…

That's the second time he's done that for me, and I want it again and again and again forever.

And I want more. "Please."

My skin turned ultrasensitive on the path his lips made from my mouth to my neck to my ear.

"I want you so bad, Yuki-chan, but your birthday is only a couple weeks away…"

I squirmed and wiggled and managed to roll over under him, "I don't care," I gasped as I wrapped my legs around his waist. How do we both still have on all our clothes? "I want you. I don't want to wait anymore."

He kissed me hard. Tongue everywhere. He tastes like the wine he's been sipping.

Then he pulled back and shook his head, "Not here. Not tonight." A quick kiss. "I have plans for your birthday." Another kiss. "I promise you'll be glad you waited."

I tried a pout, "If you're going to make me wait, as least kiss me again."

"Oh," he smirked down at me, "I'll do more than kiss you."

Late Evening, Family Garage, Morinozuka Estate:

Oshiro-san and I were waiting for my son and Haruhi-chan when he pulled into the garage. We have much to discuss.

Her door flew open before he even opened his. She jumped out, spun around, and yelled through the door, "You're an idiot!" then slammed it.

Not the way I was going to approach it, but she does have a point.

He got out and headed after her, but I barked at him, "Takashi!"

His head spun towards me, realizing Oshiro-san and I were there, "I need to speak with Haruhi, Father. Please."

"No. I think you've done enough."

Yamaguchi and Nagata joined us, and I lowered my voice and let my son have it. "What were you thinking starting evasive maneuvers without informing security? You could have gotten into an accident. You could have made everything worse. Without security knowing what you were going to do, you endangered yourself and Haruhi-chan." I folded my arms across my chest and glared down at him, "You know better, Takashi."

"I was protecting her…"

"You endangered her," I roared then took a deep breath. "You and I have a meeting in the security offices tomorrow morning at nine to discuss this mess. Do not be late."

He 'yes, Sir'd me and took off after Haruhi-chan. I'm not sure he understands the ramifications of what he did.

No matter. He most definitely will after our meeting tomorrow.

.

It took me the rest of the ride home to calm down enough to realize what actually happened.

We were followed leaving the co-op.

And Takashi decided to not only take matters into his own hands but didn't even consult with security before he started driving like a lunatic.

He scared me.

He knows I hate riding in a car. He knows I'm scared of the roads. And he drove like crazy without even a thought.

What. An. Idiot.

I was almost to my room when I heard footsteps running behind me, "Haruhi!"

Dammit.

I don't want to do this now. Today's been too crazy. I'm frazzled, tired, scared, angry, frustrated, and likely to say something I'll regret.

"Haruhi! Please stop!"

I stopped and sighed, letting my shoulders droop. My purse slid off and landed on the floor. If those ceramic cats broke…

"What?"

"I apologize for my erratic driving."

I didn't even turn around. "Fine." Scooping up my purse, I continued to my room.

"Haruhi? We need to talk about this…"

Alright. He wants to talk, we'll talk.

.

Haruhi slowly turned around and her eyes narrowed. "You want to talk? Fine. But I'll talk. You listen."

She took a step towards me, "I'm tired of this shit, Takashi. I'm tired of talking about my security with you. I'm tired of you trying to take it over. I'm tired of being scared by your actions. TIRED!"

"But…"

"Stop," she held up a hand, "and just listen for once. You obviously haven't heard what I've said before, so I'm going to break it down for you one more time. Are you ready?"

I nodded.

"Good. Here goes…

"Did you even think before you started driving like a crazy person? What on earth possessed you to try something like that without even informing either of our teams? We had seven other cars with us. It was their job to deal with that."

A tear leaked out of her eye, and she brushed it away with the heal of her hand in frustration.

"If you can't trust my security, how the hell am I supposed to trust them?"

.

It's now or never. I'm at the end of my rope and am not sure I want to hold on anymore. He took a breath, but I plowed on not letting him speak. "I am tired of your overprotectiveness and your inability to accept my security. Security led by a head that used to be yours, by the way. Fully Morinozuka vetted."

I closed the distance between us and poked him in the chest, "I will not spend my life hiding behind you! Security is their job! Let them do it!"

If I don't leave now, I'm going to break down. I can't let him see me like that. I can't let him think I'm weak.

I stepped back a few steps, "You are either my security or my boyfriend. Not both. It's up to you, Takashi. You have to choose. But choose and mean it, because if this isn't the end of this, I'll choose for you, and you won't like it."

Another step backwards. I lowered my voice, "Do you really want to guard me while I'm dating someone else?"

I turned and ducked into my room, shutting and locking the door behind me.

.

"Haruhi!"

I'd heard yelling and had come out in the hallway to see what was going on.

I managed to grab Takashi and pull him into my room while he was still half dazed. After everything she said, who knows what he'll do next after his brain starts working again.

"Taka, what the hell did you do?"

"There was…"

"Never mind. I don't need to know. I heard enough of what Haruhi said to know that you fucked up again."

"Satoshi…"

"Shut up." I stepped to block him as he went for my door. "Shut up and listen to me."

"Get out of my way."

"NO!" I pushed him away from the door. He may be able to kick my ass, but I am going to make sure he hears me first. "You're an idiot."

"Satoshi, I'm warning you…"

"Yeah, well, I'm warning you. If you're so stupid to throw away someone as special as Haruhi, then it's your own damn fault when she starts dating someone else."

He started stalking towards me, "Satoshi…"

If this doesn't do it, nothing will. "Although, you'll be great security for the two of us when I ask her out."

His fists clenched. His eyes narrowed. In the most deadly voice I've ever heard, he said, "What?"

"You heard me. I know I can respect her wishes. I know I can respect her boundaries. I know what my role in her life would be. I know how precious she is. I know what a gift having her in my life like that would be." I stepped forward and pushed him again, "And I know you're wasting it. You idiot!"

I heard the growl and braced myself for the punch that never came.

.

Umeko and I heard everything and had stood outside Satoshi's door listening for the right moment to interrupt.

I think before my oldest son kills his brother is the right time.

"Takashi," I barked, throwing open the door.

"Thank the gods," Satoshi mumbled as he stepped out from between us.

"Father…"

"I heard everything, and I agree with both Haruhi-chan and Satoshi. You're an idiot."

"But…"

"Go home. Think about your choices."

He glared at his younger brother.

"Don't worry. Satoshi's not going to be asking Haruhi out any time soon, right Satoshi?"

"No. Not right away."

I barked at him again before he lunged at his brother, "Go home, Takashi. Be back for the meeting with security. Do not call Haruhi tonight."

"But Father…"

"Go before I have you removed from this estate."

His shoulders slumped and he just short of stomped down the hallway. At least he respects me enough to follow my orders. I'm not sure I could have had him removed without injuries to both him and several security officers.

"And you," I turned and pointed to Satoshi, "I hope all that was to make a point."

"It was."

"Good. Because if they can't work this out and she started dating you, it would tear this family apart."

"I know, Father." He scrubbed his hands through his hair, "I love Haruhi. Just not like that. I'm not the idiot here."

Night, Heaven & Hell Gentlemen's Club:

Another Friday night, another strip club.

It's not like I'm enjoying myself. Now, when we get home and Bu strips for me…

"Hey, Asshole," she slapped my arm, "are those some of yours?"

I checked out the group of guys at the door, "Yep." Five of the fellas I hung around with the most at the compound. Haven't really seen them in weeks.

"Go."

"What?"

"Go," she waved a hand at them, "hang out. You've been at the Himura Compound so much since the hospital, I'm sure you have a lot of catching up to do."

I checked her out, looking for the catch.

She rolled her eyes, "Just go," and gave me a shove. "I'll be fine."

Well, I'm not leaving without giving her a taste of later. I stood up and leaned in close, her legs coming around my waist on instinct. Leaning forward, I licked the outside of her ear, "Just remember who brought you and who you're going home with."

Her voice came out as a growl, "Don't worry, Asshole. I have a special costume for tonight."

"You're fucking killing me, Bu."

.

I watched him flag down a waitress in a little white skirt, shelf bra, and halo as he walked over to those guys and heard him ask for a VIP table and bottle service. She put on a big smile and added an extra bounce to her step. Nice jiggle. That'll pull the tips.

I made sure all the entertainment and staff in all the clubs know who Ritsu is. He's to be treated with the respect an heir deserves. Give him everything he wants that's on the menu, but no touching. He comes home with me.

"Hey, Babe…"

I swung around and glared, "Save your breath. You'll need it to blow up your next date."

"Bitch…"

But that's I heard a voice at my elbow, "Would you like for me to escort him out for you, Shinobu?"

I turned but had to look down, "Honey?"

Night, Haruhi's Room, Morinozuka Estate:

Knock…Knock

"Haruhi? It's me, Chika. Can I come in?"

I couldn't hear anything, but Satoshi said she's still in there.

Good thing he called me rather than try to talk to her himself. They may be friends, but I know her much better than he does. He'll just open his mouth and shove both feet in. He's better off at Neon. I warned him not to tell the twins or Tamaki and Renge what happened. The last thing Haruhi needs is for those four to come over here thinking they can help. Though I'm sure Renge would stop them. She knows her well, too.

Finally, the door cracked open, "He's not out there, is he?"

"No. It's just me."

The door opened, and I slipped in. "Satoshi thought you might want to talk."

"I don't."

"Alright." I handed her the bottle of tea I brought with thinking it might help, then headed for her sofa. She unscrewed the cap and drank half of it then started to pace.

I watched her practically stomp from one end of the room to the other. Nostrils flaring, face red, it's clear she's been crying, but she's angry, not sad.

I sat back and waited.

.

Stupid Takashi.

I stomped around the room a couple times then whirled on Chika, "How did my father die?"

He swallowed hard, "Car accident."

"And how do I feel about riding in a car?"

"It scares you."

"So, if you were driving me around, would you all of a sudden start driving like a crazy person, taking hard turns, slamming on your breaks, and other stuff?"

"No."

"So, wouldn't you think the guy who's dating me, who supposedly cares more for me than anyone, would know not to do that?"

He shook his head.

"What the hell is wrong with him, Chika!" I roared. I'm beyond frustrated. I'm beyond angry.

That stupid idiot!

"HARUHI! STOP!"

He stood and headed for me, reaching for my arm…

That's when I realized I'd reached back and was ready to smash my bottle of tea through the window.

I let him take it.

"How could he do that? After everything, how could he scare me like that!?"

"Maybe he didn't…"

"Oh, don't you dare make excuses for him. Don't you DARE!"

He put up his hands and backed up to the sofa to sit down, wisely not saying another damn word.

.

Damn, she's got some lungs when she wants them.

Though, from what I got from Satoshi, her anger is completely justified.

"He did it again, Chika. He did it again." She started pacing back and forth, "After St. Louis, after everything we went through, after I don't know how many arguments, he did it again. He took over and didn't THINK!"

She stood in front of me, feet planted wide apart, chest heaving, eyes huge and glassy from angry tears, and baring her teeth.

I've never seen her so angry. I never want to see this again.

It's scary.

She whorled on her heel and started pacing again, "He's supposed to be this valiant protector, someone who knows about security, and he just takes over! He didn't check with his team. He didn't check with my team. He just took over!"

Then she stopped.

Then walked to the window.

Then took several huge breaths.

I heard her mumble, "Idiot…" then turn and walk towards me.

"He scared me, Chika." The sofa bounced as she plopped down beside me, "He scared me."

I reached out and pulled her against my side, wrapping my arm around her shoulders, "I know."

Silence fell as the sound of her breathing filled the room. It hitched several times like she wanted to say something but changed her mind.

Finally, she took a shuddering breath, "I don't know what to do."

I let that ride for a bit, realizing she doesn't want an answer, but someone who will listen.

A few minutes later, she sighed, "I'm not ready to give up on him. Not yet, but he's making it easy."

She pulled away and looked up at me, "What do I do now?"

There's the question I've been dreading. "I don't know, but we'll figure it out."

.

xXx

.

Night, Heaven & Hell Gentlemen's Club:

I gave Shinobu-chan a quick smile then turned back the jerk who'd been harassing her. In my best black-Honey voice, I growled, "I think the lady told you to get lost…"

He swallowed hard, "Yes, Haninozuka-sama," and ran.

"Shit."

"Are you alright?"

"Yeah, but it's more fun if I scare them."

I held back a smile, "I'm sure it is."

Then she laughed, "What are you doing here?" But before I could answer, "Want a drink?" she asked as she waved the bartender over. He was there in an instant.

"Can you make a chocolate martini?" When he hesitated, I smiled, "I've always wanted to try one."

"Make that two," she ordered as she knocked back the rest of her what I think was sake.

"Right away, Himura-sama."

"Now," she turned back to me, "not that I'm not happy to see you, but what are you doing here?"

"Well…," I hesitated, and she raised a brow, "well, Cho-chan's having such a hard time I thought bringing her someplace different would help." She started looking around, but I continued, "She's not here. I thought I'd check it out first in case it wasn't a good idea."

The drinks arrived, and she took a small sip, "Mmmm. Not bad." After a quick taste, I had to agree. "This place isn't really geared to couples, Honey. Look around," she waived her arm to encompass the room, "not counting the entertainment and the staff, there's only maybe five other women here including me."

"And that doesn't bother you?"

"Not really." She studied the room again, "This club isn't set up for dates. My techno themed club has a small dancefloor for couples and Komorebi Elegance Club is a supper club for dates with entertainment and has a dance floor as well. The other three, this one included, are mainly for men only."

"Oh."

"And while those two will cater to couples, I'm not sure Cho would enjoy either of them. Neon and the disco floor of Ranka's are more her style."

"I guess…"

She reached out and touched my arm, "Hey, that doesn't mean finding a place to take her is a bad idea, this just isn't that place."

After taking another sip, she leaned forward. I did my best to keep my eyes on her face. "Did something happen with Cho?"

I raised my glass to take another sip and realized it was empty. Signaling for another, I thought about if I should tell Shinobu what's been going on. But really, if anyone would understand, it would be her or Haru-chan.

"She's been spending a lot of time in her family's panic room…"

.

Listening to Honey describe the frantic search for Cho, I realized my own stomach was clenching and it was definitely getting hotter in here.

Damn, I thought I was doing better. I haven't freaked out in days. Ritsu knows about the nightmares, but I haven't told him I still am losing my shit sometimes. Mainly when I feel trapped or…whatever. Don't think I could get on a plane now. Not sure how Haruhi's doing it going to Seoul. Getting on one for the ski trip makes me sweat, but I don't want to bail on it.

I wonder if we could drive…say something like wanting some time to ourselves?

Shit. I haven't been listening to Honey…

"I just don't know what to do. I think she's going to Disney tomorrow just because I asked. Do you think it will help?"

"I'm not sure. She had fun in Florida, right?"

"Yeah, but…"

"Yeah."

I finished my martini and ordered a beer. "Honey, I'm not sure how to put this nicely, so I won't," he smiled. "You need to stop taking responsibility for making her happy. Her best friend was just murdered. It was sudden. It was shocking. It wasn't fair. And she didn't get to say goodbye. She doesn't need all of us trying to make her happy, to make her forget."

I chugged half the beer to get that sweet martini taste out of my mouth. If I want chocolate, I'll eat candy.

"She needs to be allowed to feel the way she feels. By trying to make her happy, you're telling her what she's feeling about all this shit is wrong."

"But that's not what I mean to tell her."

"I know. You know. And if she was thinking clearly, she'd probably know. But she's not thinking clearly and probably won't for a while. Back off and let her feel what she needs to feel."

"OK."

"Look, after the kidnapping, the murder, and all the other shit going on in everyone's lives, we all need to just be for a while."

"Do you think I should cancel tomorrow?"

"Not necessarily. Give it a go. Maybe she's going because she thinks it will help, not just because you want it to. But," I caught his eyes and held them, "be prepared to leave anytime. Watch her for signs. You know her well enough to know them. Don't force her."

"OK. I can do that."

.

xXx

.

Night, Honey's Limo Headed back to his Apartment:

Be happy but let her feel the way she needs to feel.

Enjoy the day but be ready to leave as soon as it feels like she needs to.

Stop trying to change the way she feels.

Be there for when she needs me, but don't force the issue.

I'm glad I went tonight. And I'm glad I didn't bring Cho-chan.

Shinobu was right. The disco at Ranka's is much more our pace.

I didn't even enjoy watching the performers. Every time I caught a glimpse of all that skin, I just felt dirty.

But Akatsuka-san and the rest of my detail seemed to like it.

The only thing there I enjoyed was the chocolate martini.

I wonder how hard they are to make.

.

.

Night, Neon:

She danced closer to me and smiled, "Where do you keep your medal?"

"In my trophy case in my room."

A little closer. I could feel her breath on my neck, "I'd love to see it."

I spun her out then pulled her back but not as close. It's not the first time one of them has basically asked to come back to my house. I'm sure it won't be the last either. "Watching a competition is much more exciting."

"When's your next one?"

"December 10 at the Budokan."

"I'll definitely be there."

"Then I'll definitely win."

.

"So, are you Hikaru or Kaoru?"

"Does it matter?"

His hands skimmed down my bare thighs as his lips nibbled across my shoulder. "Not as long as you don't stop."

.

"Hey, Kaoru!" I tossed a crumpled napkin at him to get his attention. When he turned, I pointed to the dance floor, "Go get your pervert brother away from that nice girl. He shouldn't do things like that in public."

"Tamaki-kun…"

"Yeah. No."

"What!"

"Tamaki-kun?" This time Renge-chan pinched my arm, "That's Kaoru out there. That's," she pointed to the twin across the table, "Hikaru."

"Very good, Renge. You win the which one is Hikaru game, but how could you tell?"

"What?" That's Karou out there?

"Well, despite the fact that you both dressed identically and parted your hair the same way, it's not that hard to those of us that know you well."

"Nope. Not buying it. Haruhi could do it with her eyes closed, but no one else when we're trying to screw with everyone. How'd you do it?"

"That smirk when he called you the wrong name."

"Ok, that I'll buy."

"Wait," I looked back and forth between the twins, "You're Hikaru?"

"Nothing gets past you, Boss."

Night, Heaven & Hell Gentlemen's Club:

Woosh!...Woosh!

All heads jerked towards the stage as the firebreathers started their show.

"Motherfucker…"

"Oh, shit…"

"You sure we can't buy them for the night?"

"Hey!" I kicked him hard in the shin. "Cut it out with that talk. These women are entertainment, not hookers."

"Sorry, Young Lord," he mumbled, bowing his head. "Guess I got carried away."

"Whatever."

I finished my sake and leaned back, crossing my arms in front of my chest. Dickheads.

We'd been having a great time getting caught up, and then they had to open their fat mouths…

"So, you're moving to the old Chiba Compound tomorrow?"

"It's the Shiraishi Compound now. Bu changed the name."

"Yeah, I heard that." He glanced at me then turned back to the stage, "Good name."

"It's boring without you at the Compound, Young Lord."

"Shut up," one of them shoved the other, "you sound like a girl."

"Fuck you."

"Hey!" I jumped in before they got out of hand, "I'll be around more after we settle in."

"OK."

Then I saw her start slinking her way towards us through the tables. Red miniskirt riding real low, matching halter cut just under those amazing tits.

Those hips and that smirk told me what was on her mind.

"Fellas," she nodded at them then bent over to whisper in my ear, "I've got a costume and a love hotel room with our names on it. Let's get the fuck out of here, Mr. Himura."

"Damn straight, Mrs. Kasanoda."

She waived a waitress over, "Keep this table happy on my tab," then grabbed my hand and led me to the door.

Late Night, Haruhi's Room, Morinozuka Estate:

I tapped lightly on the door but got no answer, so I opened it and peaked inside.

Chika's hand came up right away and put a finger on his lips, "Shhh," he whispered, "she finally fell asleep."

I stepped quietly into the room, and he helped me move her to the bed. She'd changed into sweats at some point, so we tucked her in wearing those.

When we were back in the hallway, he yawned, "She's pretty upset."

"As she should be." I shook my head thinking about what my oldest son had done. Akira doesn't want me at the meeting tomorrow. I think he's afraid I'll be harder on Takashi than him and the entire security team.

He's probably right.

"Thanks for coming over, Chika," I smiled and combed my fingers through his hair. He's grown again. "Your mother called, so you should be getting back."

"Yeah, I have an early workout." But before I could turn, he asked, "What's going to happen next?"

"Akira and the security team will discuss the situation with Takashi."

That cruel grin almost scared me, "Good."

"After that, I'm not sure, but they both need to take some time to think about what they want and then have a long talk to finalize things."

"I'm not sure she can handle him agreeing to back off her security and then not doing it again."

"I agree. Nor should she have to."

"Then what are you…"

"We'll have to see how it plays out, but I will not allow him to endanger her or hurt her again."

"Good."

Saturday, November 5:

Early Morning, Fujioka Memorial, Morinozuka Estate:

"And then I shut and locked the door." I reached out and traced her kanji, "What do I do, Mom? I'm not ready to give up. I'm really not. But when he does things like that…"

I didn't sleep well last night, so when I woke up around five, I gave up and came down here.

I've told them everything that happened, and I've just gotten angrier. That idiot ignored every policy I know of and acted all on his own. If that car hadn't had press but instead a bigger threat, who knows what could have happened. With one sharp turn, he could have lost almost all of both of our security teams.

And this is after he practically yelled at me for what I did in New York.

Does that idiot even realize the irony?

.

"Sorry I didn't make it by yesterday, Miwa."

I lit the incense and stepped back.

"I'd say it was because I was busy, but that'd be a lie. I didn't want to face your family, especially your little sister. I know she's still having a hard time with what happened, that she still blames Haruhi-sama. Anyway," I scrubbed my hands through my hair and stood up straighter, "I'm sorry I didn't make it yesterday."

That's when I heard a footstep behind me.

"Eiji?"

I'd recognize that voice in an earthquake. I slowly turned around, "Haruhi-sama?"

She looks terrible. Dark circles under her eyes, baggy sweats that the twins would give her so much grief for wearing, and really bad bedhead.

"How have you been?" I took a breath, but before I could answer, she continued, "I heard you were made the liaison between the Morinozuka's and the security review. Congratulations."

"Thank you," I bowed slightly. If it hadn't been for her insistence that I keep a position with the family, who knows where I'd be right now.

She walked up beside me and placed her hand on Miwa's marker. "I miss him."

"I do, too."

We stood silent for several minutes before I built up the courage to broach a sensitive subject. "I heard what happened yesterday."

Silence.

"I'm here if you want a different perspective."

She thought for a few moments. I could tell she was being deliberate about her response.

"Do you think he'll ever see himself as my partner and not my security?"

"That's a good question, and probably the clearest way to ask it." I gave her a sad smile, "I'm not your security anymore, so I feel I can be more straightforward. May I?"

"Of course."

"What do you know about the history between the Morinozuka and Haninozuka families?"

"Not much. Nothing for certain."

"Well, forgive the history lesson, but this might help you put some things into perspective." I led her over to a bench, and we sat. "Both family lines extend into antiquity and their histories are closely intertwined, but they weren't always equals. Until relatively recently, the Morinozuka's acted as servants and protectors to the Haninozuka's. Although the two families are now related through marriage, that history is still thick in their traditions.

"Takashi-sama's always seen himself as Mitsukuni-sama's protector despite his abilities in martial arts. Protection is ingrained in his personality. Has been since he was little. It's a hard instinct to break."

I let her think about that for a few minutes. This is one time I'm glad Nagata's in charge of her detail instead of me. But I sure wish I could be a fly on the wall at that meeting this morning.

Finally, she heaved a huge sigh, "It's all well and good to say that it's his natural instinct to protect that kicked in, but if his natural instincts are to go against all his training, break policy, and endanger his primary, then his instincts suck."

Well, when put that way…

"Excellent point."

"So, now what?"

"It's not a secret, so I can tell you there will be a meeting this morning with Takashi-sama, Akira-sama, and the relevant security personnel. They'll be going over the incident and making sure he knows what he did wrong."

"Good," she huffed, shoving her hands in her pockets. It is rather cold in here.

Then she proved just how hard it is to distract her. "You gave me the history of the families but didn't answer my question. Can he change?"

"I'm not sure. It will depend on what he wants more, you as a partner or you safe."

She stood to leave, but I spoke up before she could go, "The two of you will need to talk this through. Probably not for a couple of days. It will take that long for him to fully realize his mistakes. When you do, you need to be ready. Be ready with the answer to this question: what do you want in a life partner?"

Morning, Security Conference Room, Morinozuka Estate:

Nagata, Yamaguchi, Thompson-san, Ogata-san, and I spent some time prior to this meeting to discuss the best course of action. Akira-sama gave us the green light to speak freely to Takashi-sama. To speak to him as a security member rather than the heir. To treat this as an after-action report and debrief when a security officer needs disciplining. That took pressure off the tack we decided to take.

It's still going to be a bumpy ride.

Nagata was just finishing the timeline…

"And that's when the lead car, Takashi-sama's car, and two follow cars arrived at the estate. Follow-ups with the reporters have confirmed that they were acting alone and had no intention of hostile action. They were following to see where she was going, with no plans to intercept."

He looked up from his report and across the table to Takashi-sama. Setting his pen down, his eyes narrowed, "Now that we've reviewed the facts, I want you to explain why you broke protocol, acted recklessly on your own, and endangered my primary."

"I took actions to ensure her safety."

"No," I barked, "you endangered the primary. You took it upon yourself to make security decisions without consulting her actual security detail. Your actions were in exact opposition to her safety."

I've been on the Morinozuka family security force my entire career and been the head for the last two years. I've known him since he was a child. He knows better than this. I know he does. It's so frustrating to see him so dense.

Nagata took over, "What you did last night lessened our ability to protect her. You undermined our deployment, our policies, our training. If something had happened and she was taken or injured or killed, it would have been a direct consequence of your actions. It would have been your fault."

I pierced him with a glare, "And the fact that that doesn't seem to register with you, Takashi-sama, has me incredibly concerned."

No response so Nagata continued, "You are trained in hand to hand, but not security procedures…"

"I attended the Black Onion Squad Personal Protection Detail training prior to St. Louis…"

"Then that makes this worse. If your protective instincts are so strong, so bad, that they throw your training out, how can you trust them? How can we? How can Haruhi-sama?

"Have you stopped to realize how much you scared her last night? How much your reactions reminded her of that fatal car accident? You'll be lucky if she ever rides in a car with you again!"

I tapped Nagata's foot with mine, a private signal for him to calm down. He took a breath and lowered his voice, "As it is, you've set her back months. The fear in her eyes as she got into her SUV this morning…"

Takashi-sama jolted in his chair. He kept the panic in his eyes out of his voice when he asked, "Haruhi's at Hitachiin Studios. If you are here, who's guarding her?"

.

Oshiro-san glanced around the room, the look on his face clearly frustrated with Takashi-sama's lack of comprehension. The anger on Akira-sama's face alone was enough to scare me. Takashi-sama might be his heir, but he sees Haruhi-sama as his daughter. And don't get between a father and his daughter.

Oshiro-san squared his shoulders and looked down at him, "That is none of your concern. She's covered. That's all you need to know."

"But…"

"No. This meeting is to discuss your failure. Nothing more."

Takashi-sama bit his lip but didn't say anything else. In my opinion, one of the very few smart things I've seen him do since the review started.

When Ogata-san brought me on board and told me my primary role would be reviewing Fujioka's security because of my Hollywood background, I thought having her boyfriend be knowledgeable about security procedures would be a positive thing. Too bad I was almost immediately not impressed. His concern for her blinds him to the overall situation and leads to endangerment like last night. Having him in the picture is a liability rather than an asset.

Before the meeting, we decided that Ogata-san and I wouldn't participate unless addressed, but it's getting harder and harder not to rip him a new one.

He's a textbook example of how being in love makes a man stupid.

Akira-sama agreed to also not speak during the meeting, but I've been keeping tabs on him and counting the number of times he's practically had to hold his breath to keep from dressing down his son. I'm sure he'll have a private chat with him after this, and I have a feeling it will be harsher than everything said here put together.

"Takashi-sama, you are not a team of one. You are not even on the team. You are a primary yourself. Security is not your job."

Then Oshiro-san turned to me, "Thompson-san, if you were leading the team last night and Takashi-sama was on it, what would you have done?"

I fixed him with a stern look and let him have it. "If you were under my command, you would have been fired on the spot. No one makes a mistake that endangers not on the primary but the entire security team and remains in my employ. No one."

There might not be another chance for me to get everything off my chest, so I kept going, "My primary responsibility in this security review is Fujioka-sama's safety. That includes finding her a new detail head with celebrity experience. I'll tell you this," I reached out and tapped the table with my finger, "not a single person who's qualified would put up with what happened last night. You keep undermining her security, and you'll never find anyone to protect her and work with you. No one worth their salt will put up with being second guessed by the 'boyfriend'." I said it with derision and meant it.

He fell back in his seat like I'd struck him.

Good. Maybe I finally knocked some sense in his thick skull.

A quick glance around the room told me everyone had reached the end of their rope.

Time to hit him with the 'find out' portion of his 'fuck around'.

Oshiro opened the folder that'd been sitting in front of him throughout the meeting. "Actions have consequences, Takashi-sama. Your actions last night broke the trust Haruhi-sama's team had for you. You are no longer trusted to act in her best security interests."

His body stiffened, and he shook his head slightly. At least he remained silent.

"Due to your direct actions, new rules and procedures are established. The first of which is, you will no longer be allowed to drive her anywhere."

"But what if she wishes…"

"Irrelevant. However, after last night, I'm sure she won't want to be driven by you in any case." He smoothed the paper in front of him and continued, "Next, we will need forty-eight-hour notice for any activity you wish to take her on that is off this estate or not at the apartment. That includes any date, shopping, meals, etc."

Oshiro-san listed a few more that were slight adjustments to existing procedures including new privacy restrictions put in place to help curb her social media profile when out in public. Frankly, the first two were the worst for him.

Everyone turned when Ogata-san cleared his throat, "After last night, I no longer believe you can be objective regarding Fujioka-sama's security. I'm taking you off her security review taskforce. You'll still be interviewed and reviewed but won't be in a decision making position."

With that, Oshiro-san stood and the rest of us followed. Takashi-sama swayed slightly as he stood. Perhaps we actually got through to him?

.

As soon as the door closed behind us, I ordered Takashi to follow me. We didn't speak until we were alone in the soundproof room.

"Father…"

"No." I held up my hand, "You don't get to talk yet. You will listen to me."

I paced the length of the room and back, getting ready to do something I've only done perhaps twice before – yell at my son.

"What were you thinking! What you did was incredibly stupid! You ignored your training. You ignored protocol. And worst of all," I leaned forward and yelled in his face, "you endangered my daughter!"

He stepped back, "But…"

"Absolutely not, Takashi. No 'buts'. If you were my employee, you'd be blackballed throughout Japan, Korea, China, and anywhere else the Morinozuka family name can reach."

I stepped forward to get in his face again, "You could have gotten her killed!"

Backing off, I stood staring for a few moments. "Pull a stunt like that again, and I'll forbid you from seeing her. I'll forbid you from the estate. Do you understand."

His huge eyes just stared at me.

"Do you understand?" I asked again in a louder voice.

"Yes."

"Yes, what?"

"Yes, Sir."

I headed for the door, "Think about what you want. Think about what she wants. But don't contact her today. We spoke to her at breakfast, and she's still quite upset."

Late Morning, Koi Pond, Morinozuka Estate:

I'm not sure how long I stood there after Father left, but I finally realized I needed to be close to Haruhi. And since she's not here, the koi pond is the next best thing.

What am I going to do?

Why won't they listen to me?

Nagata didn't tell me he spotted the car. How was I supposed to know they were aware? For all I knew, they had no idea. That car could have come up and done anything if I hadn't taken action.

And how dare they decree I'm not to drive her anywhere anymore. Haruhi likes it when I drive.

But when I close my eyes and remember the fear in her face last night…

Dammit.

I tossed a handful of food for the fish and watched them swarm. Water splashed my arm, and I remembered her panic attack.

She's so delicate. So fragile. So precious.

I only want to protect her.

Why can't they see that?

Late Morning, Security Conference Room, Morinozuka Estate:

After Akira-sama and Takashi-sama left, we all just sat still staring at each other. It's like we finished a marathon.

"Do you think he got the message?" Thompson-san asked as he refilled his coffee.

As Takashi-sama's acting head and team second, I kept my mouth shut. I was the only one who didn't speak during that meeting, and considering everyone's tempers, I'm keeping it that way.

"I hope so," Oshiro-sama leaned back and stretched. "I sure don't want to do that again."

Thompson-san studied the room for a beat, "But what if he makes you?"

No one wants to answer that question. Takashi-sama's the heir. The only person who can supersede his orders is Akira-sama.

"He won't," Oshiro-sama grunted. "Akira-sama won't let him." He took a deep breath and sighed, "The boy's smart, he's just not thinking right now. He'll realize what he did and not do it again."

Thompson-san snorted and raised a brow but kept silent otherwise. I've spent enough time with him to realize he doesn't have a high opinion of Takashi-sama. To be fair, he's not catching him at the best time. The kidnapping has put us all on our back foot – obviously or we wouldn't be having a security review – so he's not seeing all his experience.

Oshiro-sama surprised me when he turned the question back on Thompson-san, "How would you handle it if he did something like last night again?"

Lacing his fingers together, he leaned forward and put his hands on the table, "That would depend on my role. As the family security head, it would be unlikely I'd hear about it as it was happening, so I'd meet with his father to determine the course of action. Personally, if he did something to endanger her like that again, I'd recommend he no longer be allowed within her proximity," he shrugged. "The timeline on that would be up to Akira-sama."

He looked over at Nagata, "If I was her detail head and present at the time of his action, my response wouldn't be as diplomatic." His lips quirked up in a half-smile, "I don't envy you your position, Nagata, but if I was you and he did it again, I'd remove her from his presence immediately. Separate the teams and get her to a new location until I could reevaluate her situation."

He hesitated, then looked around the room, "It's harder because Takashi-sama has some security experience, though not in PPD. I've separated a couple I was guarding before because one couldn't follow procedures. It was ugly, but you must do what's necessary to keep your primary safe."

.

I glanced over at Ogata-san to see if he was thinking the same thing.

He nodded.

Guess we both just heard what we needed to make the decision.

"Thompson-san?"

"Yes, Oshiro-san?"

"The Morinozuka Security Division would like to offer you the permanent position of Fujioka-sama's Personal Protection Detail Head."

His eyes became huge as he fell back in his seat.

Not sure how he didn't see that coming.

Late Morning, Koi Pond, Morinozuka Estate:

I gave my son what I felt was a fair amount of time for him to stew in his own juices before I hunted him down. I wanted him to have time to catch his breath after that meeting but not find his footing.

I found him sitting at the koi pond, his elbows on his knees, his face in his hands.

Now he's going to hear from me.

Sitting in the chair opposite the sofa, I took a deep breath and gave him what for, "What do you want to do when you grow up?"

He jolted in his seat, and I held back a smile. I didn't realize he hadn't heard me come in.

When he didn't answer, I repeated the question, "What do you want to do when you grow up?"

"I don't understand the question. I'm the heir."

"You don't have to be. I have another son and a young woman your father and I think of as a daughter. Now, do you want to run the Morinozuka businesses as a whole or just security? Or none of them? You have your own businesses after all."

"I want to lead the family."

"Alright. What about Haruhi? Do you see a future with her? Do you want her as a life partner or a primary?"

"I want her for life. I love her."

I leaned back and crossed my legs, "You lost the respect of several security officers with your antics last night. So much so, most of her team doesn't want to protect her when you're around. You should be concerned about what the consultants will recommend at the end of their review."

"Mother…"

"And what about Haruhi-chan? After all the arguments the two of you have had over her security, do you really think she wants to go through it again? How can she trust you if you say you'll stop taking over? The two of you have been here before, and you broke that promise. You'll have to prove yourself all over again. Trust, once broken, is much harder to build."

"I want her as a partner, but she won't be there if something happens to her."

"You can continue to think that Takashi but consider this. Last night you put my daughter at risk. You acted selfishly, foolishly, and without a thought to your training."

I stood for my dramatic exit. "Go home. Think. Really think. And before you talk to Haruhi-chan, come back and talk to me. Tell me what you're going to do and how you'll do it." I headed for the door, calling back over my shoulder, "I won't let you endanger her ever again."

Late Morning, Hitachiin Studios:

"Thank you for your time," I stood and bowed. "Good luck with the catwalk test."

"Thank you, Fujioka-san."

As soon as she left the room, I texted Kaoru: #8 NO!

There's no way I could see myself working with that woman. And she wouldn't be good for the line either. All her questions were about Kaoru and what he's like and if he has a girlfriend. She's in her thirties! And has kids! I know because she must have shown me dozens of pictures.

I promised Karou I'd save my opinions until we'd seen all of them for each position, but I figured he'd want to know if there was an absolute deal-breaker. The others I've just been ranking.

I checked my watch…10:34. And I've only seen eight so far. Twelve more to go.

At least he set a full buffet in the lounge I'm using. Maybe another couple of those crab puff things before I call in the next one…

.

Tilting my phone screen so Mao could read it, I whispered, "Let number eight go. If Haruhi's that sure, it's a waste of time for us to see her."

She nodded and left the room.

I started at the bottom of the list, and Haruhi started at the top, so I'm watching number fourteen walk right now.

Not bad…

.

"I see from your resume, this will be your first time modeling. What made you want to try out?"

"Well, I'm currently working as a waitress and entertainment in a bar while taking business courses during the day. My daughter came home from school recently and told me her teacher said dancing in a bar isn't something mothers should do…"

She trailed off, her face flushing a dark red.

I reached out and handed her a box of tissue. "Until someone knows what struggling looks like, they should keep their uninformed opinions to themselves."

Her eyes looked up at me with a spark of hope.

What is wrong with this country and its opinions of working women?

"My father worked as an Okama throughout my childhood, and he was the best father I could have ever had."

I offered her another cup of tea and some crab puffs. "Make an early lunch of it," I smiled as I piled a couple more on my plate, "and tell me about how you'll integrate modeling with your classes."

Late Morning, Shiraishi Compound:

"You gotta be fucking kidding me."

"Nope, this is your personal office."

"It's fucking purple, Bu."

"Well, it was Dai's wife's tearoom." I tried, but that angry puppy look on his face did it for me. I burst out laughing. "Relax, Asshole. We couldn't get it done before now, but the decorator will be here this afternoon to meet with you. It's part of the second wave that will be done while we're skiing."

"Oh."

I patted him on the head, "Start thinking about what you want. The room on the other side of that wall she used for storage. It's yours too. You can knock down the wall for a bigger office with a conference table if you want to."

He put his hands on his hips and started surveying the room, "Yeah. That should work."

"Then I'll leave you to it. I've got a meeting with my second."

Late Morning, Tokyo Disney:

"It's a small world after all…"

I pulled her close and kissed her cheek. She was humming along, but I could tell she wasn't as happy as she was in Florida.

"Look, Cho-chan," I pointed to the painted bubbles on one of the boats, "is that a hidden Mickey?"

"Good eye, Honey-kun. That's four so far for you today."

And none for you, my sweet Cho-chan. It's like you're just going through the motions. Forcing a smile because you know I want to see it. Your eyes don't even light up.

Her mother said she slept in the panic room again. When I asked her about it, she said her room reminds her of sleepovers she had with Keiko-chan. She was never in the panic room.

As the exit came into view, I squeezed her hand three times, "Do you want to ride again?" Our VIP tickets let us stay on as many times as we want.

"Maybe later."

I made sure Tama-chan knew we were leaving, and we all got off the ride.

.

Poor Honey. He's trying to make it fun for her. I'm surprised he's not trying harder, though it's a good thing he's not.

Then Tamaki-kun stopped and stared, "Look, Renge-chan! They have gachapon toys!"

I took a closer look, "And we can buy them with our bracelets." Hooking my arm through Cho's, I gently pulled her along, "Come on. Maybe we can find something for Honey's new brother or sister!"

That idea put a bounce in her step, and the four of us headed into the store.

Lunch, Café, Ooka Artist Co-op:

"Thank you for taking a study break and meeting me for lunch." I gave Akito-kun a quick smile, "I know we were just here for dessert on Wednesday, but their meals sounded tasty." I took a big bite of noodles, "MMmmm."

"It worked out. The café's close to the medical school so it was easy to come over in between study groups."

He's so busy with his studies. Is this what it will be like when I'm in university and he's doing his internship? Will we even have time for each other?

"I talked to Honey this morning?"

"Really? Why?"

"Cho's grief could turn to depression. I wanted to let him know some things to watch out for. I also suggested a grief counselor."

"Oh."

I must have looked as worried as I feel, because he reached over, put his finger under my chin, and raised my head, "Hey, she's hurting, but it's not bad. Not yet. I just wanted him to be aware. What's she'd going through is normal, but being cautious is a smart thing."

"OK."

Neither of us said much as we finished our food. We were both studying the art on the walls. That's an interesting painting of a river. I wonder if I could use a filter and the camera settings to get that effect.

"When's the next photography lesson?"

"Tomorrow." I'm sure my smile is huge. "Jigoku-san has an early morning photoshoot, and I'm going to observe."

"Sounds like fun."

Lunch, Tokyo Disney:

Security Radios…

Akatsuka (Honey Detail Head, Lead for the day): "All teams, Mitsukuni-sama confirmed headed for Crystal Palace Restaurant for lunch. Detail heads report."

Yamada (Cho Detail Head): "Confirmed."

Tabata (Tamaki Detail Head): "Tamaki-sama and Renge-sama in Adventureland Bazaar getting new shirts after getting wet on ride. Confirmed headed to restaurant next."

Shimizu (Renge Detail Head): "Confirmed. Will change in restaurant restroom." And while we're in there, I'll talk to Renge-sama about Cho-sama. She's holding up so far, but I can tell she's doing it for show. If Renge-sama suggested she didn't need to stay…

Akatsuka (Honey Detail Head, Lead for the day): "Peripheral guards report."

As I listened to the outer rings report in from different sections of the park and from the vehicles, I watched Yamada oversee our primaries being seated. After what happened in California, I have all the tables surrounding theirs filled with security. We paid a family and two couples off so we could have their tables, but I am taking no chances.

Their VIP guides aren't pleased, but I will have my way. No one will approach their table without having to come through a ring of guards. There will be no surprises. The guides were seated with the guards rather than the group. One of them can call a guide over if they have a question. Their privacy will be respected.

Cho-sama's been quiet and somber all day, as expected, but she's also kept a wary eye on the crowds, flinching almost violently when one guy got too close. He was checking his phone and not paying attention, so there was no malice in it, but her reaction was stronger than expected. Yamada said she's been like that on campus the last week. I think he should discuss her mental state with Saka-san, his family security head. He'd be in the position to bring it up to her parents. It's much harder to guard someone when they are scared of everything and depressed.

.

"What is that? It looks delicious."

"Mickey milk pudding with passionfruit sauce," Honey smiled then made it disappear. "I think I need another."

Cho poked at her strawberry crepe but didn't say anything. There's nothing but sweets on Honey's plate. Not even a protein. Granted, it's not the healthiest menu here, but they did have vegetable and meat choices.

"How's your sushi, Tamaki-kun?"

"Different." He picked one up with chopsticks and offered it to me, "I'm not sure I'd call it sushi. It has fried chicken in it." It wasn't bad, but definitely not traditional. "I'm not sure Haruhi would approve."

"The white chocolate and strawberry mousse is yummy. It has a cake slice!" And three of them disappeared quickly.

Shimizu's right. Cho's not enjoying herself at all. Maybe I should…

But Tamaki-kun spoke up first, "What's everyone want to do next?"

Cho looked up and sighed, "We haven't been to Tomorrowland yet."

"Cho-chan?" She turned to Honey and tiled her head, "Do you really want to stay?"

"But…" I grabbed Tamaki-kun's arm to get him to stop.

Her voice was so small, so quiet, "I wish I wanted to."

"But you don't?" She shook her head. "Then we can go."

"I don't want to ruin your day, Honey-kun."

But he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close, "You absolutely are not doing that, Cho-chan. I hoped this would help. It's not. So, there's no reason to stay." He kissed her cheek and lowered his voice.

.

Honey-kun leaned closer, "It would ruin my day if you did something that wasn't best for you. Tokyo Disneyland isn't going anywhere. We can always come back. But you come first for me, Cho-chan. Please know that. I love you. I want what's best for you."

Suddenly, lots of tension I didn't even know I was carrying fell off my shoulders. Was I really trying so hard to be happy? Was it that obvious I'm miserable here?

"Thank you." I leaned into his chest and took a deep breath, "I'd like to go."

"OK."

I sat back up and reached for my purse.

"Leaving?"

Renge? Oh, I forgot about Tamaki and Renge.

"I'm sorry…I just can't…"

"No need to apologize. You need to take care of yourself."

And I could see it in her eyes. She understood.

"Don't worry about us. Tamaki-kun and I haven't finished the rides and there are several shops I still want to visit."

"And don't worry about lunch," Tamaki waved away Honey-kun's money, "I've got it."

"Thanks, Tama-chan."

"Will we see you tonight?"

Tonight? Oh, shopping for ski stuff.

Honey-kun squeezed my hands three times, "We'll see how we're both feeling. We both already ski, so we have equipment, and we can always send our assistants out."

We told our detail leads we were leaving, said goodbye to our VIP guide, and headed for the limo.

Afternoon, Hitachiin Studios:

Lunch with Kaoru and his staff was all business. We'd all seen all twenty candidates for the thirty-something model, and he wanted to eliminate as many as possible.

Since I didn't see any of them model, I just gave him my ranked sheet and mostly listened, interjecting where needed. My first choice was number nine, the bar entertainer. She and I clicked the most during our talks. To me, she embodies the spirit of 'Every Woman'.

Unfortunately, she ended up third in the overall rankings, but one and two were my three and four, so I'll get along with whoever they choose.

Now, I'm back in my lounge getting ready for the fifty-something candidates, but I can't make myself focus. I did a good job this morning, but after that lunch all I want to do is curl up and sleep.

Or go yell at Takashi.

Jerk.

Dammit.

I told myself I wasn't going to think about it today.

But after what he did…

Dammit.

I jerked to my feet and stomped over to the door. Taking a deep breath, I opened it and called out, "Number twenty-one please."

Afternoon, Honey's Limo:

The city streamed by outside the tinted windows as we left the park. It wasn't as big as Florida but was still fun. We'll have to go back.

Cho-chan sat beside me, curled up tight against my side, my arm wrapped firmly around her. Her eyes were distant and glassy. I could tell she was holding back tears.

The limo was quiet, the only sound were the tires on the pavement.

"I'm not sure I want to go home yet."

There aren't that many places we can go to be alone. Takashi was in a terrible mood this morning but wouldn't tell me why, so the apartment is out. We could go to the Haninozuka estate, but mother might not understand we want to be by ourselves.

"Can we just drive around?"

"Sure." I tightened my arm and told the driver to take the long way back to the Cho estate. It's on the other side of Tokyo, so it will be at least an hour anyway.

She sniffed, and I handed her a handkerchief. "Hey, I know you're hurting, but you're not alone, OK?"

"I know. I just…just…" She took a deep breath and tried again, "I thought it would hurt less by now. I should be moving on," her huge eyes looked up at me, "shouldn't I?"

"Oh, Cho-chan," I pulled her onto my lap, tucking her head under my chin, "it hasn't even been two weeks."

She let out a shaky breath, and a tear ran down her cheek, "I miss her so much."

"I know." I kissed the top of her head and started rubbing her back, "And it's OK to miss her. It's OK to hurt. Whatever you're feeling is OK. It's what you need to feel, and there's nothing wrong with it."

By now she was crying full out. Huge sobs wracked her body, and I held it tight as she shook. I picked up the phone and told the driver to give us at least another hour. We'll see if we need more time as we get closer.

"I…I can't stop. I'm sorry."

"It's OK." I ran my hand through her hair as I reached for the blanket over the back seat to wrap us up. "It's OK. Just breathe." More sobs. I think my heart is breaking. "You don't have to be sorry for anything. I've got you."

I held Cho tight as she grieved. Letting her know she had all the time and space she needed.

I need to propose soon. She needs that stability. My original proposal idea isn't going to work. It's too fun. Too playful. She's hurting too much.

She needs something romantic, quiet, and private…

Late Afternoon, Shiraishi Compound:

"You sure about this?" he asked us again for the tenth time as we wandered around the space.

"Yes, Young Lord. We each have our own private rooms, share a living space and small kitchen, and its back door opens directly across from the security building. It's perfect."

Kono and I went back and forth about where to live on the new compound. Both of us wanted to be in the main building but be as close to the security building as possible. Yes, both of our primaries can text when they need us, but it's best, especially with those two, to be near at hand. They both can get some strange ideas in their heads, and if we're close, we can control their environment easier. We both know there's no stopping their ideas sometimes.

Igaya-sama agreed to the arrangement. He's living in an apartment in the security building that the previous head lived in. He doesn't want a remodel, just fresh paint and new furniture, so that will happen while he's living there. Our remodel will happen during the ski trip.

The Young Lord raised a brow at me, a last chance for me to change my mind. I know why he's concerned. Neither of us is completely comfortable with Shinobu-sama's choice to keep Kono has the head of her detail. We both understand it, though it took some time for me to get there, we just aren't happy with it. To be fair, nothing short of going back in time and Kono preventing the kidnapping to begin with will make us happy, so here we are.

I gave him a nod, hopefully ending the issue.

"And you're OK in here until the remodel?"

"Yes, Shinobu-sama." We had our futons delivered already, so it's not like we're on the floor. The hardest part will be sharing a bathroom for a few days. The remodel is enlarging it into two separate ones. "We'll be fine." Kono nodded.

"And the decorator…"

"We're meeting with her tomorrow unless your plans have changed."

"Nope. Neither of us have plans to leave the compound tomorrow." She turned and gave the Young Lord a leer that spoke volumes. Perhaps we should warn the compound guards and gardeners about opening random closed doors. Who knows how many closets they may try out tomorrow.

"Well," the Young Lord turned and headed for the door, "I'm going shopping."

"You got my list?"

"Yup. And your sizes. Don't worry. I won't get you anything Cho would ski in."

"You better not."

I followed him out the door, worried about that evil laugh.

Late Afternoon, Hitachiin Studios:

"Thanks, Kaoru."

"You're welcome." I turned to Higashio-san, the Every Woman lawyer, "Standard 1-year contract as discussed. Exclusive."

"Yes, Kaoru-sama."

And with that, I'd just hired a former stripper to be the thirty-something model. I'm not sure if any of us can say Haruhi's doesn't have good business instincts anymore. The arguments she made for Takimoto-san were nothing short of brilliant. She's right. She's the very demographic we're designing for. Women trying to break into the business world and be taken seriously. It didn't hurt that Haruhi said she'd help with the interviews when her background came out. I tried to warn her what she was stepping in, but she waved me off. Mao will make sure her agent gets a full briefing from today.

Our fifty-something model, Sugiushi-san makes up for it by being married with adult children and two-year-old twin grandsons. Her husband manages a supermarket, and her children have boring jobs. No controversy there.

"We'll need to arrange for a press conference and several interviews with the three of you as soon as possible." Suwa-san, my head of marketing, was already scrolling through her calendar.

Haruhi's getting better at covering her dislike for the business. I didn't even see her eyes roll. "My agent has my schedule. It will have to be after next weekend no matter what."

"Yes, Fujioka-sama. I'll check with him."

"Thanks."

"Well," I closed my laptop and stood, "if there's nothing else, I need to get going."

.

I followed everyone out and pulled Karou aside, "I'm not going shopping tonight."

"What? Haruhi doesn't want to go shopping." The grin said it all.

"Idiot," I punched him in the arm. "But seriously, I'm tired and not even close to being in the mood. Besides, I'm not learning to ski, so I don't need any equipment."

Guess I must look as tired as I feel because he didn't argue. "OK. But that won't stop me from getting you some winter clothes. You need a new coat, new boots, new pants…"

"I still have all that from last year."

"Haruhi," he shook his head in play disgust, "You should know by now that fashion expires. You can't wear anything from last year. Styles have changed."

"Fine, but remember, you want me in commoner stuff."

"And that's what I'll get," he reached up and tapped my nose. I resisted the urge to bite his finger off.

Late Afternoon, Nozuka Supotsu Flagship Store, Skytree Solamachi Mall:

I greeted everyone as they came in and had staff members show them to the skiing gear.

Satoshi pulling up in his limo surprised me. I thought he'd come with Haruhi in her SUV. We haven't spoken since he threatened to ask her out.

"Hey, Taka." He climbed out and headed for the door. "Haruhi's not coming. Too tired after the model stuff today." That might be part of it, but I don't believe that's the main reason. Neither does he going by that glare. "She said not to call her."

If she's not coming, I don't even want to be here. I don't need new equipment. I don't need anything for this trip.

Only Haruhi.

But if I leave, everyone will wonder why. So far, Satoshi and Chika are the only ones that know what happened. I want to keep it that way.

That's when the twins pulled up and got out. "Hey, Mori. I'm not sure if you've met my assistant yet," Karou introduced Mao-san. I'd seen her in St. Louis, but we hadn't formally met. "Since Haruhi's not coming, Mao's going to shop for her. She needs a new winter wardrobe even if she doesn't need ski stuff."

"Hn."

.

Three hours later, I'd filled up the entire limo with coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, shirts, pants, loungewear, and anything else Mao and I could think of for Haruhi. I asked her to deliver it to the Morinozuka's then take the limo home. I'm sure she'll be kicking back with a beer before they leave the parking garage.

This group sure knows how to shop.

Renge helped completely outfit Tamaki for skiing and fashionable lounging. If he wasn't engaged, he'd have to beat the snow bunnies off with a stick. Hika helped Yuki with everything she'll need. She wasn't sure if she'd just try skiing or snowboarding, so he got her set up for both. I think he overwhelmed her, but she needs a bigger wardrobe. I've seen her wear the shoes she's got on tonight three other times.

And don't even get me started on Honey. Since he's grown, he needed new everything. He had to call another car just to take the stuff back to the apartment. And all pink. Pink snowsuit, pink boots, pink skis, pink sweaters. Pink, pink, pink. And there was no stopping him when he found that Hello Kitty store.

At least Ritsu knows his wife. I offered to help, but he managed pretty well on his own. No pink. Black and red with skulls. They're made for each other.

"Hey! Everyone!"

"What's up, Boss?"

"Let's go to the diner for dinner!"

Dinner, Small Dining Room, Kyoya's Apartment:

I asked Tachibana to join me for dinner for our weekly security briefing. I need to know what's going on, and he's more open in an informal setting. Still means he does nothing more than wet his lips with the wine even after I've assured him I'm not leaving again until tomorrow.

"…and that's the deployment for the ski cabin. Plans are set and the first team will be going up on Monday."

"Ogata-san's satisfied?" He and Morimoto-san are heading security for the cabin and various resorts.

"Yes."

"Fine." I took a bite of steak and savored it. This new chef was the right choice. "How about Yuki and Numata?"

"All reports are positive. She seems to be comfortable with him, and he reports that there is no friction. I still believe he's the right choice."

.

And then he asked the question I've been expecting, "And her photography lessons?"

"Going well. No security issues. Those his art is well known, the photographer, Jigoku-san, isn't. So far, they have not been recognized." I hesitated for a beat, "I'll be going to the lesson tomorrow morning to make a assessment."

"Why?"

"Personal curiosity."

He doesn't believe me, but simply nodded, "Fine." Although Nagata's reports have left no doubt to his suspicions about the photographer, I did not pass on his concerns. I want to judge for myself. I've also ordered a deeper background check on him.

"Anything else?"

I thought long and hard about telling him this, but in the end decided that he should hear it from me rather than someone else.

"Yes. Friday evening, Takashi-sama…"

As I told him what happened, I carefully assessed the emotions in his eyes. Anger was the most prevalent.

"Morinozuka security has determined he is no longer allowed to drive her anywhere."

"I should think not."

When he turned and stared out the window, I worried about the faraway look that took over. It usually indicates a plan in the making.

And I believe I know what it probably is.

"No."

"No, what?"

"No, this is not your second chance with her." The embarrassment in his eyes confirmed my suspicions.

With a big sigh, he picked up his fork and attacked his steak, "Yeah, but at least I'm not the only fucking idiot in the world."

He looked back up, "Keep me apprised."

"Yes, Kyoya-sama."

Dinner, The Diner:

"And then found a huge gachapon store full of Disney toys." Renge pulled a couple out of her purse. "These are my favorites. Minnie mouse as the Disney princesses. Look," she handed one to me, "here she is as the Little Mermaid."

"How cute." It was, but I'm just not into all the Disney stuff the way she and Tamaki are. Now if it had been anime…

She and Tamaki continued talking about their afternoon, but there's something wrong. Honey said Cho wanted to leave early, so he's missing her, but it's something else.

I think it's Mori and Haruhi.

Kaoru said she was tired after their interviews, and he believes that, but Mori's been upset this whole time. And Chika and Satoshi keep glancing at him like they're angry.

I wonder what happened.

.

Am I not seeing the entire picture?

Oshiro, Father, Nagata, Thompson, Ogata. They all said what I did was wrong. That I went too far. That I endangered Haruhi.

I respect them. They can't all be wrong.

So, perhaps my approach was incorrect.

I looked up from my grilled fish and met Ritsu's eyes.

If anyone will understand, it will be him. He loves Shinobu. He wants her protected.

Maybe he can help. Maybe he can help me make Haruhi's guards understand that what I did wasn't that wrong. Maybe he can help me protect her better.

Evening, Ritsu's SUV, Driving Around Tokyo:

"Alright, Mori, we're alone." He's been weird all night so when he asked to talk to be privately, I jumped to find out what the fuck is wrong. "Is Haruhi alright?"

"Yes."

"Then what's up your ass?"

He leaned back in his seat across from mine and spilled.

"…and I was hoping you could help me."

"Help you how?"

"With security. Help them understand what I did and why. Wouldn't you have done the same?"

I leaned back, finished my beer, and shook my head, "Respectfully, no way in fucking hell."

Author's Note:

So, the blue car…not where you thought I was going, was it?

I know I've harped on Mori messing with her security before, and I'm trying to not make this feel like I'm beating a dead horse, but this is his instincts coming up and taking over rather than him just being worried, so it's different. It will also be the last time they have a big fight about this. As she tells him when they finally have their big talk – this was your last chance. I will say that I have no plans for a breakup. It will be bumpy, but they will work it out. Ritsu will have a big part of that. I think you'll all like what he has to say, but if you have suggestions, please let me know. He will not be pulling any punches.

And Haruhi's not coming out unscathed. Mori's moronic actions will set her back riding in a car. The guard that's been riding with her in the back to help her remember to keep from jumping out the door will probably stay longer. Dad and I are pretty sure she'll never end up getting her license. I just don't see her ever wanting to drive. And with security, she doesn't have to.

As for what was said in this chapter, Dad and I are pretty happy with it. Satoshi offering to date her was a big blow for Mori. And Haruhi did a good job telling him exactly what she thought.

Her talk with Eiji was necessary. I wanted someone to give her the family history perspective. Most of that info came from the OHSHC Wiki.

When I read the Mori/Security meeting to Dad, he was disappointed I didn't go at Mori stronger. Then I read him the talk with Akria. That gave him the harshness he wanted.

Was anyone surprised I decided to go with Thompson for her head? The more I wrote him, the more Dad and I like him, so he made a logical choice. Besides, we have enough named characters. We both think he's strong and independent enough to tell Mori to sit down and shut up if he needs to. I can see him grabbing Haruhi, stuffing her in a car, and leaving Mori by the side of the road if the situation warranted it. Not that I'm foreshadowing anything.

Honey's doing his best to help Cho. I want her to go to a dark place, but she won't be there too long. Like he said, it hasn't even been two weeks. I think her parents will take Akito/Honey's advice about a grief counselor. It's always a good idea to get help when you need it.

Thought it was funny that he'd be so desperate to help that he'd consider taking her to a strip club. Had fun writing that. Notice the hint I dropped about Bu not doing as well as she's letting on? The kidnapping wasn't that long ago and even if she's a badass yakuza, it's unrealistic to think she'd go through that and be OK already.

Honey's support for her in the limo after Disney shows just how far I've had him grow up. Like she told him when he got the bakery…indulge your love for cute as a business, but that doesn't mean you can't be serious. They'll make it through, but I'm not quite done with them yet. I did have a great marriage proposal for him and then I decided to kill off Keiko so I really can't do it. Bummer.

Why Mori thought Ritsu would understand, I have no idea. I can't wait for you to read that conversation next time…

Next Chapter:

What Ritsu really thinks…Haruhi gets a new detail head…Tachibana observes an early morning photoshoot…Haruhi and Bu give interviews…news from the Seoul Trial…and the ski trip begins…
