Kuri rolled her wrists in around circles in anticipation, listening to the satisfying clicking sound of her joints. It was finally their turn to fight, and she and Bakugo were standing about twenty feet apart, waiting for Mr. Aizawa to give them the signal to start.
Bakugo was grinning, somewhat evilly, and his hands were emitting sparks. Kuri shook her arms out and started cracking her knuckles while observing their surroundings. They were boxed in by multi-story fake office buildings and were standing in the middle of the street.
While watching the six rounds before hers, Kuri's nerves had continued to grow. She was usually nervous about fighting even if she knew she could win. But considering that her opponent was Bakugo, she wasn't so sure about what she was going to do. Kuri's knowledge of Bakugo's fighting style was limited to what she had remembered from the sports festival she'd watched with her father. She didn't remember a whole lot except that he attacked quickly and violently.
While his strength was intimidating, Kuri was quite sure that she could take him on and possibly win. She didn't want to fight him, but for a different reason: she didn't want to hurt him. Yup, that's right. Her simping heart was keeping her from wanting to beat the crap out of him. Though she definitely would have to do something if she didn't want to get the crap beaten out of herself.
In summary, she needed to hold back while also working hard enough to not die.
Kuri suddenly heard the crackle of a loudspeaker come from somewhere around her.
"Okay, you two," Mr. Aizawa said, "You'll be starting in three…"
Kuri and Bakugo both took fighting stances.
"Two…"
Kuri took in a deep breath and leaned on the balls of her feet.
"One..."
This will be fun.
"Start."
Bakugo immediately leaped at her, using an explosion to propel his jump. His right arm came up, preparing to swing at her. Kuri jumped up high into the air. From where she was, she could see over the buildings of Ground Beta.
She heard another deafening explosion, and within a moment, Bakugo was in front of her. He tried to kick at her as gravity worked its magic, but Kuri dived down headfirst, managing to evade his attack. She flipped gracefully and landed on her feet.
Bakugo was yelling something at her as he was hurtling back towards the ground, ready to fire off another explosion.
I need more of a strategy if I plan to get through this fight.
With that idea planted in her head, and with Bakugo rapidly approaching, she dodged at the last second. She jumped off the ground so that she could twist and bounce off the side of a building, then repeatedly bounce off the surrounding buildings. She continued to ricochet herself around and around, going at inhuman speeds.
Kuri went on bouncing around like this for about thirty seconds until she heard another explosion and saw Bakugo coming right to where she was going.
Damn it, he figured out my trajectory.
Kuri saw Bakugo's hand glow as he warmed up another explosion.
If I block this, the force should push me into the building, and I'll be able to bounce off and get away. I just hope the burn won't be too bad.
Kuri lifted her arms, and Bakugo's hand made contact with them. As he did so, Kuri felt the searing pain of the burn through her sleeves, then the thundering sound and force of the explosion. Her body flew back, but Kuri was lucky enough to maneuver her body into the position to jump again. Unfortunately, she'd landed on a window.
The glass shattered beneath her feet, and she felt herself fall through the window frame and onto the hard concrete floor. Kuri got up carefully, trying to avoid the broken glass, then peered outside what had been the window. Bakugo was down on the sidewalk looking up at her, and she was on the fourth floor of what she remembered to be a six-story building.
Bakugo ran into the building, and Kuri took to the stairs, swiftly ascending them. She felt a large blast from downstairs that shook the building violently, causing Kuri to trip.
Is he trying to make the building collapse?
She sprinted up the last flights of stairs, another enormous blast rocking the building as she emerged on the roof. She felt the building tilt; the foundations were at their limit. As the building began to fall, Kuri launched herself over to the roof of a building on the other side of the street. She turned and was immediately met with the sight of Bakugo coming at her again.
Her dumbass hadn't been paying good enough attention, and now she didn't have much time to dodge.
Bruh, frick this.
Bakugo landed another explosion on her, this time on her waist. The touch fried her brain for a second since Kuri was extremely touch-starved and had just been touched on the waist by her crush. She quickly came to her senses and managed to jump off the roof and rebound on another building.
She hurtled through the air back towards Bakugo with her arms outstretched. He blasted over to her, just as her body crashed into his torso, sort of tackling him. She wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him down with her as she fell back to the ground.
She felt the shock of an explosion on her back, and Kuri shrieked in surprise and pain. There was another explosion, and Kuri felt them being sent down with an even greater force. In a last-ditch effort to not die upon impact, she flipped Bakugo over her head at the last second so that she could use his body to cushion her fall.
Sorry, Bakugo, I may like you, but I still have to look out for my own bones.
As they landed, Bakugo groaned in pain, and Kuri quickly stood up, mostly unscathed.
Your sacrifice was not in vain. My bones thank yours.
Kuri hesitated, wondering if the fight was over yet, but Bakugo got up and leaped at her. She jumped away but then felt Bakugo's hand wrap around her ankle. As she was being tugged back down to earth, she panicked and tried to kick him in the head. He brought his arm up to block her and grabbed her other ankle in the process.
Kuri felt the burning before she felt the force of the explosion. From her ankles, Bakugo had thrown her down to the ground.
As she made contact with the pavement, she heard a loud crack and felt a sharp pain in her side. Well, she had sharp pains everywhere, but especially in her rib area. She guessed that she had broken a bone or two.
Also, she had the absolute pleasure of getting the wind knocked out of her. Kuri only remembered this happening to her once before, when she'd slipped on water in first grade and fell flat on her back. It had been awful for those few moments where she couldn't breathe, and she had started crying from the pain. It had been many years since that had happened, but the agony was just as she'd remembered it.
Kuri began coughing violently, desperately trying to get some air back into her body. Knowing that she was still in the middle of a fight, she tried to roll away in a futile attempt to escape. Of course, it didn't work, and Bakugo was there already.
He pinned her down, grabbing her wrists and using his legs to restrict hers. Kuri didn't struggle and instead just lay there, still trying to breathe. Plus, Bakugo was flustering her by being so close, which made things even harder for her poor lungs. She stared up at Bakugo's beautiful face, who had a victorious smirk on his face.
"Aren't you going to try to get me off? I thought you said you'd make this fun, Bunny," Bakugo said. Kuri chuckled weakly, her breathing starting to go back to normal.
"Sorry, dude, I'm at my limit. And I'm pretty sure at least one of my bones is broken," she said. She probably wasn't at her limit, but she was injured and really didn't feel like risking it all for one P.E. class. Bakugo frowned at her judgmentally.
"Maybe you shouldn't have held back," he said.
Aw, shit, he figured me out. Oops.
"How do you know I did?" Kuri said, trying not to be suspicious but failing miserably.
"Because you didn't do shit during this fight."
"True," Kuri said. Bakugo gave her a funny look as if he hadn't expected her to admit that she hadn't been trying to legitimately battle him. He didn't respond, so Kuri assumed that the conversation had been dropped.
Her eyes drifted around, trying to avoid his face as she realized that she'd been staring. After a couple seconds of awkward silence passed, she remembered the situation.
"So... What do we do now?" she asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I've surrendered already. You don't have to be on top of me anymore. Unless you really want to," Kuri said with a wink, then regretted it immediately.
I think the pain is making me delirious. At least the confidence will make me laugh later.
Bakugo turned beet red, and he scrambled off of her.
"Shut up, dumbass! You're so fucking annoying sometimes…" Kuri laughed, barely offended. She was insufferable sometimes, and she knew it. Unfortunately for Bakugo, he was one of those people that Kuri especially enjoyed teasing because it was so amusing. Well, maybe it'd be in her better interest to quit it if she wanted her apology to be genuine. Oh yeah, that apology. I need to do that.
"Yeah, I know. Remember, we need to talk later!" Kuri said as the medical robots came by to cart her over to the infirmary.
"Yeah, yeah, I didn't forget. I'll see you later, Bunny," he said. She waved to him as she was being rolled away. And as they turned the corner to leave their battlegrounds, she thought she saw Bakugo slightly smile.
