A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 3 Chapter 7
By the time Harry is done relaying everything he overheard and discussed between him, and Mr. Weasley night has fallen and it is pouring rain outside.
Ron and Hermione are thunderstruck by the information Harry has relayed to them.
Confirming whether he heard Harry right, Ron said "Let me get this straight, Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban to come after you?"
Nodding, Harry said "Yeah."
"But they'll catch him, won't they? I mean everybody is looking for him," said Hermione, cuddling Crookshanks in her arms close to the chest, trying to see the positive side of the situation.
"Sure," said Ron, apprehensively. "Except no one's ever broken out of Azkaban before, and…he's a murderous, raving lunatic."
"Thanks, Ron," said Harry, incredulously.
Bailey adds to that by whacking Ron in the head with her tail.
Suddenly the wheels on the cars squeal as the break mechanisms activate bringing the train to a slow stop.
"Why are we stopping," said Hermione, peering out the rain-drenched window. "We can't be there yet."
Hermione's not the only one thinking that.
Harry sticks his head out into the hall, the same as a bunch of people in other compartments. A loud rumbling is heard as the train car jerks harshly on the tracks, throwing everyone that had been moving into the hallway to see what was going on back into their respective compartments.
Alarmed, Ron said "What's going on."
Shrugging, Harry reasoned "Don't know. Maybe we've broken down."
The lights going out on them next certainly does help indicate toward that conclusion.
Bailey instinctively moves closer to her boy, placing a paw on his knee as he immediately wraps an arm around her neck and rubs the fur there.
"Ouch," gasped Hermione. "Ron, that was my foot."
Ron pays Hermione no mind, focusing on what's outside having glimpsed something moving. He wipes a patch clean on the window to get a better look.
"There's something moving out there," reports Ron, voice cracking from his fear. "I think…something's coming aboard."
The train jerks again and Bailey notices something odd. The air around them is getting colder and colder making everyone's breath visible and frost creeps over the window glass and the water they have in the compartment.
"Bloody hell! What's happening," exclaimed Ron.
Bailey's head snaps in the direction of the compartment door. Whatever was outside has now breached the car's interior.
And it's about to come inside.
Bailey's neck and back fur bristle, standing on end. She shifts into a defensive crouch over her boy's knees, baring her teeth at the door.
"Steady, Bailey," said Harry.
Harry may be trying to act controlled but even he can't mask how deeply unsettled he is by all of this. He even has one hand on his wand in preparation just in case.
The door is slid open by a protruding hand from a black cloak that is glistening grayish, slimy-looking, and scabbed, resembling something that decayed in water. Connected to the hand is a cloaked figure that towers easily to the ceiling. Its face is completely hidden beneath the hood except for the gapping mouth protruding from it.
Scabbers squeaks in terror, burrowing deeper into Ron's pocket and Crookshanks snarls at it next to Bailey's growling.
And then the thing, whatever it is, drew in a long, slow, rattling breath, as though it were trying to suck something more than air from its surroundings to breathe. The creature breathes in a distorted whooshing manner making it seem even more eerie than it already appears to seem.
That's exactly what it's doing and it's specifically targeting her boy.
Harry's breath catches in his chest as the creature appears to be sucking something out of him. Bailey has no idea what, but its essence is leaving Harry and deliberately traveling into the monster's mouth.
Luckily Bailey isn't being affected by it which means she can act.
Just as Bailey is about to pounce and tear into the intruder with her teeth the one person everyone paid no mind to and seemed to forget acts for them.
Without warning the man they've identified as Lupin rises to his feet, throwing his own coat off, and points his wand at the monster. Without speaking a single spell Lupin shoots a silvery mist out of his wand that forms and shield blocking them from its reach. The creature beats a hasty retreat down the hall corridor and leaves them alone as it goes to other compartments.
As soon as it's gone Professor Lupin closes and locks the door so it can't reenter this safe space again.
Bailey doesn't relax in the slightest.
Harry is unconscious.
Whatever the creature had done to him had knocked Harry out completely.
Bailey is quite obviously visibly upset. She's whining, nudging his face with his nose and pawing at Harry's chest only to receive no response. Bailey is becoming more and more frantic by the second. There's nothing Ron and Hermione can do to calm her down.
Lupin is the one who steps into the line of fire so he can check on Harry. Hermione and Ron know better. That's practically asking to get bit. Which is a decent reason as to why they're so hesitant.
But Lupin is smart. He knows exactly in what manner he should approach the panic-stricken red retriever. It's best not to push any boundaries.
Lupin moves closer in a direction where Bailey can clearly see him coming. His movements are slow, calculated, and collected so he doesn't appear threatening. Bailey pauses in her ministrations, lip pulling back over her teeth in a clear warning for him to stay away. Lupin wisely keeps his distance while at the same time extending a hand for her to sniff. Bailey cautiously sniffs his hand and after a couple of seconds, ears rise from their flattened position against her skull and his legs lose their rigid stiffness, giving his fingers a light lick.
Ron and Hermione are astonished, staring in open befuddlement. They'd never witnessed Bailey relax with the tension leaving her body like that so fast unless the instigating gesture was from Harry.
A sullen Bailey warily permits Lupin to reposition her boy to where he's lying down instead of hazard-sprawling without snapping crossly at him.
Bailey then settles where the front half of her body is lying across Harry's chest, laying her head on a shoulder.
As the minutes slowly pass by Bailey absentmindedly licks Harry's forehead as Lupin hands out chocolate to Hermione and Ron. The explanation he gives is that cholate helps negate the side effects of the monster's presence in the compartment.
Bailey finds that peculiar. As far as she knows there are no spells on that chocolate and so is confused as to why it would help with the ailments.
Turns out Bailey's added heat lets Harry's body recuperate much faster than expected.
A groan from him alerts the others that he's starting to wake up.
In her excitement, Bailey sticks her nose into his ear and sniffs around.
Harry jerks awake, pressing a hand against the same ear.
"Bailey," groaned Harry, chidingly. "You know I don't like it when you do that."
Bailey barks, wagging her tail happily.
"Harry! Harry! Are you all right," exclaimed Hermione.
Ron and Hermione gently move Bailey off and heave him back onto his seat.
"Are you okay," asked Ron, nervously.
"Yeah," said Harry, looking quickly toward the door probably searching for the now vanished hooded creature. "What happened? Where's that thing? Who screamed?"
"No one screamed," said Ron, more nervously still.
Bailey is left perturbed. Even with her superior hearing, she didn't hear any loud screaming either.
"But…," said Harry, looking around the bright compartment for the person he's sure did. "I heard screaming."
A loud snap made them all jump. Professor Lupin was breaking an enormous slab of chocolate into smaller pieces.
Handing Harry a particularly large piece, he said "Here. Eat it. It'll help."
Harry took the chocolate but didn't eat it.
Deeply unsettled and disturbed after what he just experienced, Harry asked "What was that thing?"
"A dementor," said Lupin, passing chocolate to Ron and Hermione. "One of the dementors of Azkaban. Eat. It'll help. I need to speak to the driver. If you'll excuse me…"
He strolled past Harry and disappeared into the corridor.
Watching Harry anxiously, Hermione said "Are you sure you're okay, Harry?"
"I don't get it…What happened," said Harry, wiping more sweat off his face.
Hermione said "Well, that thing, the dementor stood there and looked around, and you…"
"We thought you were having a fit or something," said Ron, who still looked scared.
"And did either of you, you know, pass out," asked Harry.
Shifting his shoulders uncomfortably, Ron said "No. I felt weird, though. Like I'd never be cheerful again."
That's another thing Bailey finds strange. She'd been so out of her mind about Harry's condition when he fainted that she hadn't been paying any attention to any of those symptoms. She hadn't felt them at all.
By around this point in time Professor Lupin had come back.
Pausing as he enters, looking around and smiling at them, Professor Lupin said "I haven't poisoned the chocolate, you know…"
Harry takes a bite to be polite, a look of pleasant surprise crossing his face.
"We'll be at Hogwarts in ten minutes," said Professor Lupin. "Are you all right, Harry?"
Bailey cocks her head to the side.
How does Professor Lupin know who her boy is?
Ducking his head in embarrassment, Harry muttered "Fine."
Bailey wags her tail as she watches the interaction, getting a good vibe off of Professor Lupin. He's not like the other Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers they've previously had.
Sirius Black and those ghastly Dementors aside Bailey full-heartedly believes this is going to be a good year.
It's especially going to be an official better beginning as soon as she sees who is greeting them inside Hogwarts.
Authors Note:
For those of you on fanfiction I'm sure you've been facing the many unwanted ads when you're reading a story. Well, yesterday, I finally had enough, and I got an adblocker app. It worked! No more ads on any level! The one I got is Adblock Pro: Safari Ad Blocker. It really works. Just follow the instruction video that it attached to it.
Heads up everyone there's someone on fanfiction you need to seriously watch out for. Early a couple of months ago after I woke up I was checking my email and I saw I had a new guest review on my A Dog's Purpose Is Strange Magic 2 sequel. I took a look at it and got a very big shock. Some random person I've never spoken to before on here or anywhere else in my life was basically threatening me. Intimidating and practically ordering me to write a threatening letter to someone on their behalf, telling to stay off of for life or else they and everyone else close to them would be killed, disgustingly telling them to kill themselves. And at the bottom of the message this crazy person wasn't done. Warning me that if I don't send the letter then they would kill me and for confirmation to email them to make absolutely sure I complied with their demands. Of course I did nothing of the sort. Instead of doing what they wanted I reported them to the website, sent copies of this deplorable guest review message to police officer cousins of mine so they could have it on file, and I went to a nearby police station and reported it.
When I spoke to the police officers and they checked everything on the message they saw, that while the address and names of business were accurate the people and their names were not. They agree it was more than likely a scam because of the email address on the bottom in order to perhaps get access to personal information or potentially hack my computer. Despite that I'm still very happy they took it seriously as I showed and told them everything. All the same I'm still very happy that I brought this to the attention of law enforcement. Even though the entire thing might be fake I'm still very happy to have brought this to the attention of those who can do something about it if it was legit in some way. This may have been a scam, but it's obvious these people are beyond irresponsible if they try to goad people into sending death threats to random strangers just to get access to info.
Be that as it may if this does unfortunately happen to you do not send any messages to the email addresses they put down and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you bring the message to the authorities immediately whether it is legit or not.
Because it's a guest review it might not be visible for a couple of days as it loads if it is sent to you. But when it does you should definitely pressing the report abuse button and send it to the email that leads to the support staff that is available.
Just a heads up to those of you who aren't aware of this yet, Email alerts for this website are now only active if Email opts is enabled in account settings.
I hope you all like this one! I certainly did while writing it for your vast enjoyment! ;D
For those of you just starting out with my stuff there are other works on my profile that may catch your interest. I highly recommend you take a look as soon as the opportunity presents itself to you. Who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover.
Stay safe everyone. Especially with all of these crazy natural disasters occurring a lot lately due to global warming and climate change everywhere for sure. I swear it's like they're getting worse and worse all the time and it's like officials are simply just ignoring it or pretending it doesn't exist entirely just to go on with their daily lives. Especially those in multi-million dollar companies that rely on certain elements of our planet that we rely on to naturally keep us safe instead of adapting and finding new safer ways to keep in business. There are so many options out there where they can adapt, but they just refuse to see it because all they care about is money. Climate change is altering so much faster than anyone can really keep track of.
So, in light of all this, it is important to live life to the fullest as much as anyone can.
I know I am. ;) See you guys next time.
