Chapter 22
Loona lightly woke up with her eyes still closed. She yawned and moaned. However, her hand wasn't resting on her boy Cody. She reached out, thinking he may have tossed and turned to the other side of the bed, but she still didn't feel his psychical presence. She opened her eyes to see that Cody wasn't in bed. The bed curtains were untied and covering the bed. Loona's heart rate began to accelerate as she quickly swiped the curtains open and scanned the room for her boy. The bedroom was empty.
"Cody?!" Loona called, slightly alarmed.
"Yeah?" Cody called before walking in.
Loona turned to the doorway. Cody walked in with a big black and white coffee mug with Jack Skellington's head design on it. Loona let out a sigh of relief. Then she sniffed a few times to smell the coffee.
"Caramel Macchiato?" Loona asked.
"Yep, but I didn't know if you wanted some whiskey in it or not," Cody answered as he handed her the coffee.
Loona blew on the hot coffee to cool it off a little. Then she took two sips and relished the taste. Cody pulled out her black pirate flask and placed it on the nightstand.
"It's right here if you want a shot in it," Cody said.
Then Cody pulled out his black and red acoustic guitar and sat down in a leather recliner. Then Cody played 'If Only For Now' by Pop Evil. Loona placed her mug on the nightstand next to the flask and lay on her side as she watched and listened to her boy. She grabbed her phone and recorded him as he played.
'Streets crowded with voices
Thousands of faces, but you're what I want to see
Lights, reflections of yesterday
Days that I've thrown away
You're all I wanna keep'
Cody's singing voice and guitar music were beautiful. He filled the air with magnificent music. Loona rested her head on her hand, leaning on her elbow. She had a relaxed and gentle smile on her face.
'So if you lay here with me now
I promise the stars, they won't make a sound
If you stay, just for a while
Cause we know the world won't ever slow down
If only for now, right now, if only for now.'
Watching and listening to Cody play filled Loona with pride and joy. Her boy Cody had so much potential and was genuinely a good person with unbreakable strength and courage. She knew full well that he would grow up into a great man. Loona felt like she was the luckiest person in the world.
"How did I get so lucky to have him?" Loona thought to herself.
Millie, Moxxie, and Blitzo walked in with smiles in their pajamas, and all three had fresh coffee. Once Cody finished the song, he looked at Loona and smiled. She smiled back. Blitzo, of course, had a big smile with heart-shaped eyes.
"Aww," Blitzo squeed.
Loona's smile vanished as she rolled her eyes and groaned. She poured a shot of whiskey into her coffee and drank some.
Before Blitzo would start his baby talk, Cody asked, "Anyone want breakfast?"
"Always," Millie said.
They ordered some waffles, French toast, and some bacon & eggs. While they were still waiting on room service, Verosika, and her crew came over dressed casually.
"Hey, Verosika," Cody greeted.
"Hey, sweetie," Verosika kissed Cody's head.
Kiki, Coco, Apple, and Milky kissed Cody on the head or the cheek. Blitzo had a smug look on his face and looked like he was going to say something but didn't want the morning ruined.
"Ah, ah, Blitzo. No insults or comments on Verosika and her friends," Cody ordered.
"I was gonna ask them if they wanted some coffee," Blitzo said.
This surprised everyone as their eyes widened.
Then Blitzo asked Verosika and her friends, "Would you like some coffee?"
Verosika and her crew glanced at each other and Cody before turning back to Blitzo.
"Yes, please, we would like some coffee," Verosika said politely.
Blitzo brought out more mugs and placed all the coffee accessories next to the mugs.
"I don't know if you have a preferred way to make your cup of joe, so I'll just pour it black, and you can put in how much cream and sugar you want," Blitzo said, pouring the coffee into the mugs.
Verosika shrugged, "Fair enough."
"We have caramel and almond milk as well," Blitzo added.
"Do you have any vanilla creamer?" Apple asked.
"Yeah, let me get it from the frig," Moxxie said.
Verosika and her crew set up their coffee the way they liked, with cream and sugar. Josh and Ace added some honey to their coffee. Coco and Apple put in cinnamon. Verosika and Kiki added some vanilla extract to theirs. Kat and Milky dripped some honey in their mugs.
"Cody, what are your plans for the day?" Verosika asked after sipping her coffee.
Cody shrugged, "I was thinking of chilling by the pool. Maybe work on my tan. Try out the spa and hot tub. Relax before my lawyers and accountants come to talk about my money. Then, I thought of storing our stuff at the apartment and M&M's apartment in my cube if the apartments haven't been blown up or burnt down."
"Here's hoping," Moxxie said, raising his mug.
"Wait, will all our stuff fit in that cube?" Millie asked.
"Oh yeah. The cube shrinks everything to a super tiny size and stores it there. Then when I want to bring them out, it brings them back to their normal size. Hence the name, infinity cube," Cody explained.
"That's good to know. Although, we may have to stop at our apartments first anyway to get swimsuits unless you got some in that cube of yours," Loona pointed out.
"Oh, that's right. Okay, change of plans. After breakfast, I summon portals to our apartments, grab our stuff, and come back here."
"How long will it take to get everything in that cube?" Blitzo asked.
"A couple of minutes. Ten to fifteen at most," Cody answered.
Room service arrived with magnificent breakfast food. Everyone chilled and chowed down together. Once breakfast was finished, Cody and his friends got ready to grab their stuff back at the apartment. With Imp City now a warzone, they needed to be extra careful. Verosika and her friends insisted they come along, but Cody assured them they'd be okay. So, he kept the portal open just in case.
Loona had her gauntlets on and ready, Millie her battle axe, Moxxie his dual revolvers, Blitzo his signature pistol, and Cody his blessing-tipped 1911. Cody opened the portal to his and Loona, and Blitzo's apartment. They approached cautiously to the front door and unlocked it. They didn't know what to expect as they went inside. The apartment looked fine, with nothing out of the ordinary. They checked every room to be safe and that no one was around.
"Clear!" Loona called.
"Clear!" Millie called.
"Nobody here but us chickens. Alright, do your thing. All the furniture, dressers, posters, all of it," Blitzo said.
"What about the food and stuff in the bathrooms?" Cody asked.
"We'll have to box it all except for the stuff in the fridge and freezer—that stuff we'll have to leave behind. Also, I'm putting our clothes in suitcases, so it'll be easier to take out later," Loona answered.
"You got any cardboard boxes in that cube?" Moxxie asked.
"Yeah, I do. I don't know why I got them, but I figured I might as. I got cardboard boxes and tape," Cody said, pulling it out of the cube.
The whole thing took about twenty minutes. They grabbed and packed all their stuff. Blitzo even got his secret stash that was hidden along with a few weapons he had hidden. However, during that time, they did feel uneasy due to the sounds of distant gunfire and explosions. Cody and Loona looked outside their apartment to see some changes. There were destroyed buildings here and there, along with ones that had partial damage. However, it wasn't as unsettling as the dead bodies in the streets and road. Most of the shops were looted, and even had sandbags with machine gun nests. It was clear that Imp City was now a war zone. Cody couldn't help but feel a little guilty, knowing that this all started when he killed Valentino. Even though he got what was coming to him, many demons' lives have been and will be ruined due to the aftermath of this war.
Blitzo cleared his throat, "That's everything. You guys good?"
"Yeah, let's go, Cody," Loona said, taking his hand.
Cody nodded and followed her back through the portal. He closed that portal and opened a new one for Millie and Moxxie's apartment. However, there was debris blocking the way,
"Oh no," Millie sighed.
As they moved some of it out of the way, they saw that the apartment was damaged from explosions, and bullet holes were everywhere. Everyone made sure it was clear and safe. Millie and Moxxie checked the area with upset faces. Mostly, everything was damaged or completely destroyed.
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me! The bed too?!" Moxxie cried.
"Wait, the wedding albums!" Millie scrambled to find them through the rubble.
After tossing some broken wood and big pieces of drywall, she pulled out a photo album book.
"Ah! Found it!" Millie hollered before opening it up, "It's okay. It's good."
"Well, that's a relief," Moxxie smiled.
Cody approached them and looked at the wedding photos with M&M. They were amazing photos. Moxxie was handsome in his white tuxedo coat with black pants. Mille was gorgeous in her black and purple wedding dress. Her hair was long with purple flowers in her hair that matched her bouquet. Cody smiled, seeing how happy they both were.
"These are wonderful photos. You look amazing together," Cody complimented.
Millie grinned, "Thank you. Isn't Moxxie handsome?"
Cody nodded, "Yeah, that's one sharp-dressed groom with a gorgeous bride."
M&M blushed at that.
"Yeah, I'm the luckiest demon ever!" Moxxie praised with a smile before it turned into a frown, "I just wish some of our other stuff survived."
"I'll buy you some furniture after I buy you a new house," Cody said, still looking at the wedding photos.
"You're really doing a lot for us, Cody. I don't know how we can repay you," Millie said.
"You already have repaid me."
Millie and Moxxie turned to him, confused with raised eyebrows, as they glanced at each other.
"By being my friends and being there for me when I need you. That's all I could ever ask," Cody explained.
He noticed it was quiet. When he looked up, he saw Millie and Moxxie smiling with tears building, and their pupils were so big. They cried out joyfully as they wrapped their arms around Cody. Cody hugged them back as he smiled.
They collected anything salvageable before returning to the hotel. Then they got into their swimwear. Cody summoned a portal so that Verosika and her crew could also grab their swimsuits and bikinis. They headed for the pool. Despite the gothic design of the hotel, it had a decent pool that welcomed sunshine and tanning. The pool was big and had red color in the chlorine. The black and red outdoor lounge chairs were comfortable with cup holders.
Verosika put sunscreen on Cody, and he put some on her and Loona as well. Once everyone was protected, they relaxed and sunbathed with chill music playing. Occasionally, drinks were brought out by the staff. Everyone chatted casually as they tanned, and every now and then, they took a dip in the pool to cool off. Verosika and her female friends showed off their beauty in the water as they whipped their hair. Loona and Verosika swam close to Cody, enjoying the water and each other. Loona didn't give Verosika any mean glares or dirty looks. She even smiled at her as she smiled back. Then they both smiled at Cody as he returned the same to them. Even the pool
Then later, they went to the jacuzzi area. They were customed with recliner chairs in the water like the lounge chairs so you could lay in them. Cody, Loona, Verosika, M&M, and Blitzo relaxed in hot water before the big plasma TV on the wall. Verosika and her crew stayed by the pool and the bar. At first, everyone was enjoying themselves, but then the TV showed the news.
"Hello there, I'm Katie Killjoy," Katie started.
"And I'm Tom Trench," Tom added.
"Hell's Civil War continues to rage on in Imp City and Pentagram City. The death toll on both sides rises to the tens of thousands."
"And almost all of their living civilians have fled for their safety seeking refuge in any areas safe from the conflict. The fighting continues to spread in those cities and the surrounding areas."
They showed a map and a list of places, including towns and district areas. The map had areas marked in red that were deemed dangerous warzones, areas in green that were safe, and areas in blue that were neutral. They showed clips of the fighting, destruction, and wounded being carried out.
Both sides had military soldiers and armed militia fighting the war. The militia on the Free Demon Union recorded their ambushes on the VVV Legion and showed clips of them executing officers and prisoners. The whole thing made Cody frown and look away.
"Hey! Can we change the channel?" Loona called.
A staff member came by with the remote and changed the channel to a sports channel. He adjusted the settings to that it could split the screen into four showing four different sports channels – basketball, baseball, dirt bike racing, and off-road truck racing. This was a much better change for Cody and the others.
"How are you doing, kiddo?" Loona asked.
"I'm okay. Although, I feel a little guilty that I'm relaxing here while all that is going on," Cody replied.
"Don't think like that. It's not a crime to relax. Besides, you earned it by killing those two psycho Overlords," Verosika stated before sipping her drink.
"Also, once you're knighted, you're gonna be part of the fighting, and boy, are you gonna change the tide," Blitzo added.
Cody hesitantly responded, "I suppose you're right. What time is it?"
"About ten minutes to two," Moxxie answered.
"Alright, I need to get cleaned up for when my lawyers and the accountant guys come," Cody said while getting up.
"You're gonna want me there. Trust me. I know all the loopholes and things you wanna look out for. Plus, you'll need Loona there since you're a minor, and no minor can enter into any legal contract without parental consent," Verosika pointed out.
"That's . . . actually correct. I need to wash and get dressed, too," Loona said, getting up.
