APPEARANCE
Toshiro is a tall, muscular young man with teal-coloured eyes and short, dark brown hair. He usually wears a serious facial expression.
His high school uniform consists of the classic black gakuran, white collared shirt, and black pants, not wearing the cream sweater as the dress code isn't strictly enforced.
As an athlete, Toshiro wears sweats most of the time, and when swimming, he wears black jammers with either white, grey, teal or red patterns. He wears a variety of casual clothing elsewhere.
PERSONALITY
Toshiro is reserved and stoic, even intimidating, but is quite kind. He takes a dry and harsh position on swimming and volleyball toward himself and those around him. Despite this, he takes an active interest in Hinata's training when he is despondent about his progress.
He's very protective of Kageyama, threatening Kindaichi not to pull Tobio down with his harsh words about his goal to be the best Setter for the team after seeing him again. Toshiro is hard-working and dedicated to his family, as evidenced by his participation in a family-run business.
BACKGROUND
Toshiro has been best friends with Tobio since their classes at Akiyama Elementary school and the Little Falcons Volleyball Club, spending holidays together with Tobio's family. He and Tobio often hung out together, enjoying similar activities, especially volleyball. Both best friends show that they were prodigies.
Once they entered Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High, it was clear that Tobio and Toshiro would be much higher than the other players on their team, including the current third-year players on their team, including the current third-year setter Toru Oikawa and third-year wing spiker Hajime Iwaizumi. However, Toshiro's exceptional abilities and over-consideration of others led him to develop a caring demeanour and overly cooperative with his teammates for Tobio's lack thereof, causing them to refer to him as the 'Black Knight'. Since the true meaning of this nickname was only known to the players at Kitagawa Daiichi, outsiders assumed that it referred to Toshiro's incredible talent and friendship with the 'King of the Court'. Additionally, he would often practice more than required with Tobio, which their teammates, Kunimi and Kindaichi, would notice and judge them for and sometimes try to avoid.
By Toshiro's third year of junior high, Kageyama's attitude had already destroyed their relationship with their teammates to the point where Kindaichi and Kunimi considered asking the coach to bench both players. Despite the setter's lack of teamwork and all-rounder, Kitagawa Daiichi still managed to be a favourite to win at the Junior High Athletics Meet. It was at the tournament where they would first meet, and Tobio began his long-term rivalry with Shoyo Hinata.
Kitagawa Daiichi was said to have moved forward with the tournament but lost in the finals; it's hinted that Kageyama may be one of the main reasons for the loss due to his picture being on an article about the match that also mentioned Toshiro trying to save the ball that lost them the game. During junior high competitions in their third year, Kageyama sent a toss to his teammates in the middle of a game only to find no one behind him but Toshiro, who, unfortunately, was too late to get the ball. Their teammates refused to hit Tobio's tosses anymore, showing their apparent desire to have him removed from the team. Kageyama was then benched and ended his final game at Kitagawa Daiichi in shame, and Toshiro is reluctant to join matches without his best friend, deciding to sit on the bench with him. Toshiro is accepted into Shiratorizawa but joins Kageyama at Karasuno High School, not wanting to leave his best friend after the death of his grandfather, knowing how much it shook him and Miwa.

Toshiro is known as the 'Black Knight' and a volleyball genius for his incredible technique and game sense. As a high-calibre all-rounder, Oyama has the potential to unify the team with his overwhelming talent but struggles with Tobio's lack of effectively communicating with their teammates.
Toshiro is a skilled all-rounder with a remarkable grasp of the basics and the complexities of volleyball. He can play many other positions, including wing spiker and setter, not caring if he touches the ball as long as he helps his team to win.
Height and reach: 336cm - April 2012
Skills
Jump Serve: Toshiro has a powerful jump serve that his opponents are wary of. Early on, he hadn't learned how to aim it accurately, but over the break, before joining High School, he got close as 1 out of 3 hit the mark.
Solid Receives: Toshiro is one of the defensive pillars of the team and is often tasked with some of the most challenging receives. He is capable in both underhand and overhand receives, allowing him to save the powerful spike and tricky jump floaters.
Setting: Toshiro isn't as skilled as Tobio; he can provide sets based on each spiker's preference, knowing how it feels as a spiker as well. Knowing that each player has a different set of skills and emotions, Toshiro can match his settings to their needs to give them the best chance of scoring.
Pinch Server: Toshiro often subs to serve in place of other players. He's capable of performing powerful spike helps and jump floaters, and he's particularly good at aiming toward difficult spots for opponents to receive through a float serve.
Straight Spike: Toshiro's explicit requires absolute precision as the ball trajectory is exceptionally close to the boundary line.
Blocking: Toshiro is a slightly skilled read blocker, and when jumping to block, he would stop and jump straight up instead of sideways. While capable of blocking opponents, Toshiro uses his blocks to help make receives easier for his team.
Jump Float Serve: Toshiro's jump float serves can vary from skimming the top of the net to catching the opponent off guard, having to receive from further out before. He can increase the speed of his serves, so opponents have a more challenging time reading the trajectory.
Minus-Tempo Quick Strike: Like Kageyama, Toshiro is capable of the Freak Quick with Hinata and even replacing him as the hitter with Kageyama. While he may miss the toss more often than Kageyama does, he has enough precision and speed in his tosses to make full use of the quick.
Cooking: Toshiro learned how to cook from his grandmother, who lives with him and the rest of his family.
Swimming: Toshiro loves to swim, but not as much as volleyball; he prefers the backstroke.
Self-defence: His grandfather owns a self-defence studio near their house and took lessons when Toshiro was younger and still attends classes with his younger siblings.
