"By Iron, By Fire"- A man on a mission...
The air was bitter and cold. Snow blew in from the east across the mountains buried under the white rain. The terrain as barren as a desert in the middle of summer. However, a small pocket of life could be found trudging through the valley located in the center of the mountain range. A group of men, cloaked in thick furs to protect them from the harsh winters around them. Each of them was armed with weapons of various kinds from axes to swords and even bladed staffs. They were on a mission, and it was a mission many knew they wouldn't return home from, and they had all accepted this knowledge and took the leap of faith in the fact they could do what many would be unprepared to do.
They walked for days and weeks to reach their destination, and their supplies were beginning to run low by the time they arrived at what had been called The Plague Tree, the very tree in which the darkness of the world had unleashed the devastating Black Death-the Bubonic Plague. They walked across frozen tundra's and rivers, but the tree was seen from miles away before they could stop and marvel it's terrifying visage in full.
A Plague Tree can be described as a decayed tree full of branches and roots with enormous size, as enormous as a mountain that can be seen on the vast distance. This particular tree was also a maze to confuse the intruders that would attempt to raze it to the ground. Currently, only the darkest of monsters lurked within it. Witches, demon's, goblins, wyverns, they all called it home. As far as the men partaking in the quest to end it, this was the furthest place one could be from heaven while walking on earth.
Coming to a small cliff near a long steep pathway, the band of brothers-for that was what these men considered themselves after coming together in their time of need, gazed upon the horrifying sight of the Plague Tree. One of the men, a tall and dirty blond man with deep blue eyes and three scars on running across his face diagonally to cover part of his nose and some of his left cheek stepped to the front of the group to gaze at what could be his final battlefield. His hair is cut to the skin on both sides of his head, and the long hair remaining on the top of his head is pulled back into a ponytail. He wears thick deer and wolf pelts sewn together as his brethren, and on his back is a single sword.
This, was Naruto Uzumaki, a traveler from the forgotten east or Japan as they called it in his native tongue. He was once a traveling merchant, but when his wife and daughter were killed by the plague, he picked up the one profession he vowed to stay away from. Mercenary work.
Gathering their wits about them, the band of men continued their march towards the deadly tree, their mission coming to a end for either themselves entirely, or for their enemies. Regardless of who won or lost, the battle would end today when one side had been defeated. When they reached the base of the tree, a elderly priest by the name of William Wallace Dillon who hailed from Scotland gathered them around for one final talk, "I swear to you, every single mother-daughter, father and son taken from us by the Black Plague will be avenged." he promised them as he begun to smear fresh lambs blood on their foreheads in the shape of a cross as to bless them on their mission.
"It is their demon queen who brought this curse upon our lands. And in her death, lies our salvation! Our vengeance, and fury will be sated, and should we win, the dawn of mankind shall be untouched by darkness from the pits of hell. Be warned brothers, the demoness will not truly be dead until her heart beats its last! Let fear be dead to us, for there is no going back! For there is nothing to go back too..."
They had seen the large sacs that resembled fruit, but they knew better-they were anything but fruit as they had contained or currently contained a nasty creature called a Plague Fly, which carried the very same plague that had killed so many innocents from across the continent.
With their final prayers soon spoken and hopefully blessed by the Almighty, the men all gathered at the entrance and ignited their torches and ventured into their final resting place, ready to face judgement if called upon. Naruto smashed his own torch on the ground in a flay of sparks before fire caught and followed Father William from a few paces behind. He kept his eyes open and scouted any form of opening for possible paths, but the twisting and gnarling roots made transversing the tree near impossible.
They were being led into a trap, and they knew it, but they felt no fear for what was to come for them.
~XxX-xXx-XxX~
Naruto looked up a large hole and hummed to himself. The path was leading upwards even still. Calling his allies over, they climbed up the mangled roots into a deep and dark room, additional torches being ignited to light their path. The men were nervous, and the silent chanting wasn't helping them ease their nerves at all. The Demoness was preparing another unleashing soon, and if they failed all was lost. A silent creaking stopped William in his tracks, Naruto coming up short a step later, "What is it William?" he asked silently.
William didn't answer, he was to busy trying to hold in his last meal at the sight of the bones from various animals lining the wall like a sort of shrine. Shaking his head the priest continued to walk forward to battle. Silent yips and barks causing the knights to constantly twist and turn as they walked, "The damned Hexton's are amongst us." a large knight growled out as he noticed a sigil depicting their blatant use of magic to fuel their powerful curse.
"This place reeks of death, keep your wits about you." Naruto replied walking past it.
As they spoke silently amongst themselves, they entered what could only be called some form of shrine room, red candles with black flames burning around them. It was here, the trap would spring, and the knights knew it-but weren't prepared for it. A large explosion of fire caused the party to jump in fright as they readied themselves for combat. A growling chanting from behind caused the group to turn, "It's her, the queen has shown herself!" William shouted as the demon queen began chanting at them angrily before a knight threw a axe at her, only for the axe to strike a large bramble and get caught.
Naruto drew his blade, the shimmering metal glinting in the flames as he regained his focus. However, the knight that had thrown his axe was retrieving his weapon, only to collapse to the ground having had his hand pricked by a sudden exposure to thorns growing on his handle and he began to desperately start gasping for breath as if something were trying to escape his seeing this pulled some of the others way, "Stand back!" he yelled out. The knights all cried out when a hoard of flies burst out from the man and shock the group of knights.
Swinging and batting their torches and swords wildly, they were driven towards the walls where several smaller creatures-witches from the mere glimpses they had as they were swinging wildly, reached out and raked their fingers across the iron armor a couple of the men wore, the metal crumpling like leaves as it constricted the man within, causing him to drop his weapon as he gripped the crushing helmet on his head before he collapsed dead to the ground. Naruto, looking around in a panic, steeled his nerves when he heard a high pitched squeal from behind, and he struck out, his blade stabbing into the gut of a ugly goblin and holding it in place.
Sweeping it's legs out from under it, he stomped his foot down and kept it pinned in place. Twisting the hilt of his blade, black oil slide down the groove carved in the metal, filling the blessed runes carved into the sword and then onto the goblins gut. With his weapon now prepped, Naruto struck down on his blade with a call of, "By iron, and fire!" where the goblin roared out in agony as Naruto ripped his now flaming sword out and quickly decapitated the monster. Turning around he managed to witness a small wyvern pinning a fellow knight to the ground and growled as he stomped over and stabbed the creature through its back, its wails of pain filling the air before Naruto flipped the beast over his head and slammed it down before slicing up and cutting it in two.
"William!" Naruto said pulling the priest up to his feet, only for the man to point directly behind him.
"The Queen!" William cried out as Naruto turned and unleashed a roar of battle before charging ahead.
Naruto of course knew he would have opposition, but she was making it to easy for him. A small group of goblins was nothing to him, slashing and cutting through them was like walking through ankle deep water. William's prayers filled the air as one after another of his comrades was attacked from the shadows before either being pinned to the ground and ripped into or pulled into the darkness where their cries ended shortly after.
As more of the humans fell to her servants, the demon queen was slowly gaining respect for their tenacity, but the blond one, the one with scars on his face, he was putting up a mighty fight for such a weak human. The fact he divided a goblin in two with a single stroke of the blade before spinning around to decapitate a witch was quite decisive indeed. She faded into the shadows once again just as Naruto turned his sight on the spot she had been standing. Walking through the dark hall, he noticed yet another hole, but this one led downward rather than up. But, it was the thing next to it that held his attention. It was a little bird, one he knew all to well in fact.
It was his daughter's, Margaret's, favorite toy when she had still been alive. B-But how was it here? Why was it here? Stabbing his blade into the dirt, Naruto gingerly reached out and plucked up the small thing and looked at it closely. He and Sierra, his beautiful wife, had made it out of a shuck of corn and small feathers of a robin for little Margret's fifth birthday. She was six when she died to the plague, his wife a tender twenty two while he was twenty four. They had been married for six years, and he had cherished every moment he had with them. However, his shock came when it faded away to reveal a small birds body causing him to drop it in shock. A hiss from behind drew his attention where he quickly ripped up his blade in time to be smashed across the face and down the hole by the demoness herself.
Grunting in pain, Naruto landed on his back after falling for about twenty feet, and he was heavily winded from the fall down the hole. That was gonna leave a mark, if he survived that is. Still in a daze, Naruto slowly blinked himself back to concentration, only to see a swarm of flies flying down the very hole he fell into seconds before. However, before he could mount a defense, the flies hit the floor and transformed into the demon queen, now face to face with the man who interested her so much a few seconds ago.
Swiping out at her, he watched as she recoiled in disgust, "You breed like rats." she declared, "You put stone on top of stone and then live in your own filth." she sneered at him angrily. Standing up and walking around him she continued her angered speech, "You are trespassers on our world. It's why I created the plague. It's why every one of you must perish!" she stated honestly as several dark tendrils birthed themselves out of the ground and stabbed themselves into the blondes flesh and began to drag him into the ground below his body, his struggles anything but fruitful as he tried to escape.
As a tendril grabbed his hand and he grunted and he turned to rip it off, only to notice a small puddle of familiar liquid on the ground. Reaching out to his opposite side, he picked up the torch with a yell and slammed it down into the oil on the ground. The cry of the demon queen filling the air as an explosion filled the air and threw Naruto away from him. The explosion had in turn filled the roots of the tree where it quickly spread out and begun to burn everything in sight. The demon queen looked around in panic and she heard the roar of fire around her, her creation, it was dying and she couldn't stop it!
Naruto's roar of fury filled the air causing her to snarl as she turned and used a staff of wood to block his attack. Snarling, he swiped around and down, disarming her before he yelled in anger, before stabbing the end of his axe through her gut, her cry of pain as she was pinned to a chunk of her creation filling the air. With that done, Naruto backed away calmly as she swiped at him in agonized fury. Naruto didn't take his eyes off her as he reached down to pick up his sword, "By iron..." he declared deeply, the demoness trying to remove the axe embedded in her gut as Naruto spoke softly, "By fire... " he finished his spiel.
The demoness chuckled at his words, they were cute, "Everyone you know is gone. I've seen it in your eyes!" she declared in a soft voice, "You wish for death." she spoke to him with a dark smile on her face.
Naruto nodded, "And today, we both die." he told her as he gripped the pommel of his blade in both hands, and placed himself in a stance. With a yell, one of defiance, and one of anger, Naruto rammed his blade into the demon queens heart. Her cry of pain filled the air as Naruto's sword pushed out of her back. However, the demon queen wasn't done by a long shot, as her hand shot out and buried itself into his gut. Her laughter filling the air as Naruto grunted in pain. The demon queens eyes glowed with power as she spoke in a hoarse voice, "I curse you with life." she told Naruto darkly.
Naruto could hear his heartbeat rapidly in the back of his ears, the demon queens arms glowing with golden tendrils of energy as her fading magic filtered into his mortal flesh, his own veins taking on the same glow as the demon queens own magic. He tried to move but found himself stuck, "To never know peace. To walk this earth alone for eternity." she groaned as she forced more of her power into him as her dying words filled the air, "You will never die..." she spoke as her body began to crumble to ash as the flaming tree collapsed around them.
Naruto collapsed to his knees, the demon queen's ash-like arm crumbling as he hit the ground, his hair swaying in the intense heat of the flames as they begun to consume everything around him.
Storm-cloud's filled the air as the Boeing 747 jet jetted across the sky. The thick clouds filled with heavy raindrops and flashing thunder. A stewardess walked down the aisle tending to her duties as she passed out drinks to passengers on the flight. A blonde man with short blonde hair that was spiky stared out the window to the aircraft as lightning exploded in the distance. He stopped staring when he felt something begin to fill his gut. Slowly looking around, he found that all the other passengers were asleep or were in the process of falling asleep. Turning to the window, he slowly inhaled only to breath out a deep silent breath on the window.
And as he suspected, a hexton sigil appeared on the window from his breath. He shook his head, "Magic." he muttered before wiping the sigil away. The storm surrounding the plane was getting worse by the moment, and he could only hope he undid whatever stupidity caused it in time. Reaching into the back of the seat, he proceeded to take a magazine and remove a staple from it, straighten it out, and drop it in a full glass of water. Rising from his seat, the man looked around, and saw that the staple hadn't moved a inch. but the fact it was wavering in the water was enough of a lead, and so, he followed it.
He went from his cabin area into the one ahead, no major change-hello, what did he have here. As he walked up the aisle, the staple suddenly turned the opposing direction, to where a young woman with several tattoo's on her and dark hair sat by a window. A mystic-be she a witch, devil or even something else he had to fix her mistake. Placing his hand on her, he saw the ring on his hand glow to signify she was in fact a creature of the supernatural. She was alone so this made it easier to handle. Sitting down next to the obviously startled young woman he begun to fold up his sleeves before unfurling the small tray for eating.
"Y-You're the hunter, aren't you?" she asked nervously.
The blond nodded, "Yeah." he confirmed.
"I-I didn't do anything." she protested to hopefully dissuade him from possibly killing her.
The man snorted softly, "Let's see it." he said motioning for her to hand something she had in her possession over to him.
"See what?" she asked.
The blond looked at her and said with a bit more force, "Come on." he told her.
The young woman growled in annoyance like a child would do when their parents scolded them, but regardless she did as she was commanded. Reaching into her bag she pulled out a bundle of sorts and handed it over without protest. As she did this, the plane shook, passengers ahead crying out as the turbulence hit a bit to hard for their liking. The two ignored the announcement to buckle up and brace themselves for a rougher than normal flight. The man looked at the bundle and nodded at the girl, "Be glad you didn't get them wet." he told her. And with that, he unrolled the bundle handed to him.
He finished unwrapping the bundle to reveal a set of small glowing tokens, "You know, I've been looking for these for a while now." he told the young mystic. He adjusted them a bit before he turned back to the now shuddering young woman, "These, are ancient runes. They manipulate the weather. Rain, wind, cold heat." he said unwinding the small twine around them before asking incredulously, "And you just jammed them together in your bag?!" as the plane shook really hard, startling the young woman and passengers even further, "You know what you get when you mix a thunderstorm with cool moist air at forty thousand feet?" he asked her ignoring the panic around him.
Thunder rumbled outside drawing the young woman's attention briefly before she turned back to the blond, "It's simple science." he said with a smirk. As he finished speaking, the plane dropped several hundred feet, the air masks falling down as passengers scrambled to put them on as they cried out in a panic of fear. The blonde man however, only smirked as he went to work. The man shook his head, "Unbelievable." he stated in good humor, "You mystics have no idea the kind of powers you wield or can wield do you?" he asked.
Unrolling a small bundle of his own revealed the necessary items he needed to disenchant the tokens. Pulling a small tube of white powder, he opened the cap and sprinkled some onto the runes causing small electric sparks to surge off the runes. Putting the powder back, he pulled off two small picks and begun to scrape them back and forth across the runes, small golden sparks filling the air as he begun to remove them from one another. With a couple of gentle tugs, he seperated the three totems from one another and calmed the raging storm caused by the ignorant youth next to him. The plane shot out of the storm, and the passengers all breathed a sigh of relief.
The young woman asked nervously, "A-Are you going to turn me over to the council?"
"No" the man responded causing her to briefly panic.
"So you're gonna kill me?" she asked with tears forming in her eyes.
"Kill you? I'm trying to make sure you don't kill yourself." he told her with a smirk on his face, "Enjoy Japan, and be safe when it comes to items of power could you?" he asked her before rolling up the runes properly before placing them in his own pocket and walking away.
Kuoh Academy. What was once a prestigious all female school was now a newly formed co-ed school for males and females alike. With the male to female ratio so different, five females to every male, it had come to be school knowledge that all the males thought of themselves as kings who wanted a harem of beautiful women. However, a strict set of rules was put into place to abolish that kind of notion real quick. Males who were caught peeping on the girls were fined with a 250 yen fine, and if that didn't stop them, then the fine doubled each time.
If they paid the fine the first time but turned to other methods to get their jollies off then things changed. Forcing themselves onto a unwilling female was immediate expulsion, physical harm was a call to the police and expulsion on the grounds to never return, and anything after that was jail time given as an adult. Needless to say, many of the males left soon after to not push their luck any further than they were able to.
Naruto Uzumaki, the last hunter as he was known in the supernatural world, opened the door to his car-a Ferrari 250-GT that was built back in 1962 which was one of the earliest models put out. It was a midnight black with white pinstripes running up the hood of the car. Stepping out he pulled off his sunglasses and looked at the school in a slight distaste. Outside of his normal routine of ensuring any Mystics didn't interfere with a mortal human's life as well as search for dangerous artifacts, he liked to take some time to teach young adults about the world at large.
Depending on what he felt like teaching, well it was entirely random but he was immortal come on, it usually depended on his current address of living. His new subject of teaching-Physical Fitness and History. The Physical Fitness was so he could ensure that the Mystics he could sense-if you could call it that as he knew that the more beautiful young women were the mystics rather than the plain and ordinary females-didn't do anything that could jeopardize the peace created after the war that came a full century after the destruction of the Plague Tree and death of the Demon Queen at his hands.
History, well he liked teaching facts and not tales of grandeur that was more than likely put into the books for the children who attended the school. Opening the door to his classroom he saw it was already full of prospective students and each were talking among themselves. He immediately picked out a total of five Mystics in his class-Devils if their smell was anything to go by-and they were incredibly young, no more than sixteen at the youngest and eighteen at the eldest. Closing the door a bit loudly on purpose Naruto cleared his throat, "That is enough talking, you are here to learn, no socialize." he told them.
"Today, however is my first day, so I shall be lenient and allow you all to introduce yourselves followed by some of your likes and dislikes, hobbies and dreams for the future." he said before spelling out his name on the board, "My name, is Naruto Uzumaki. I hail from Kyoto Japan and as such I am a natural born citizen of this land. I like teaching people the proper things they desire to learn and reading up on the Occult when I have time. I dislike those who push other people around and those who think themselves better than others. I like to go fishing and hiking as a hobby and my dream for the future right now is to ensure all of you know the knowledge you need to graduate this school." he told them.
In the back of the class, a young buxom woman with waist length black hair, beautiful brown eyes, and thin rimmed glasses felt herself panicking at the man's name. Her friends weren't as scared-they didn't even flinch when he spoke his name. But she knew exactly who this man was, he was the only immortal human in the world, he fought against the darker forces of the Occult, and if need be he killed them as well. Tsubaki Shinra was a mess, and she didn't know if she wanted to scream and run away, or simply grab her friends and throw them at the man to save her skin if only for a few more moments.
When school ended for the day, Naruto had made sure to wait in his classroom with a small list of students-students he had asked to meet him at the same time when school was over-he needed to speak with. So it came as no surprise when he heard the door to the class open and the full collection of Mystics walked into his room, each wary and confused by having" all of them in his room. Setting down the small bundle he had taken from the Mystic on the plane he unrolled them and let them see the Runes in all their glory. The fact he saw them all subtly stiffen didn't bother him, he actually smiled softly and motioned for them to each take a desk so he could speak.
"I know each of you aren't human, so I'll simply come out and ask, what are your intentions with the humans of this school?" he asked calmly before they could ask what he meant, despite their panicked looks he burst into laughter, "And before you start denying anything, I want you to know who I am." he said as he walked over to the window and let out a breath of air that revealed a Hexton sigil on it, "I was one a Hunter from a band of brothers, and I am the sole survivor on the battle against the Demon Queen and her hoarde to save humanity. I assume you all know the tale?" he asked as he wiped the sigil away.
"I-I knew it, y-you're here to hurt us." Tsubaki whimpered.
Naruto simply shook his head, "Far be from it actually. I merely want to know why so many of you have gathered here in a school? Are you going to be hunting down humans? Are you building a coven of sorts? Are you simply here to learn? I ask because I want to keep the peace between the humans who know nothing of you and your people." he told them where each of them breath a sigh of releif, including Tsubaki herself.
Tsubaki cleared her throat, "I apologize for my earlier misconceptions of you. I had figured you had come to hurt us or worse, but if you are in fact being honest, we're just high school students that are here to finish their education. We may devils but even we have to abide by the laws that our leaders put into place after the war. I figured you were the Weapon of the Axe and Cross and had come to hurt us on orders, but we truly have no ill intent to the humans here." she told him. In fact, they only wanted to learn about this immortal more than their own subjects now that they had met him.
Naruto nodded his head, "And that's alright, completely understand your fear miss Shinra. You hear stories and tales of a man who seen and done it all, and you draw the misconceptions so it's alright to think that of me. Most of what you hear might be true to an extent, but I don't indiscriminately kill or harm the people of the SUpernatural world for fun, in fact I have come to detest some of the things that the humans have done to you and yours. I have hurt and killed your kind, but I stopped my real hunting days decades and centuries ago." he said softly, "Now, I just want to make sure nothing happens to either side." he explained.
"So, you're here to what, observe, put us in check, I-I'm afraid I don't follow." Akeno said with confusion.
"I'm here to teach, but I only brought you here and revealed the Runes to you so we can have a conversation without it being weird between us. I only needed to know why there were so many of you gathered into a single point, but you have answered that for me." he told her.
Oh~ ok that made sense.
"So, will there be anything else Sensei?" Rias asked the man.
Naruto shook his head, "Other than me having to hunt for rogue elements of the supernatural whenever they get out of hand, no. If you don't have any other questions, then you may leave at your leisure." he said politely.
Ok so it's a bit short, but I like how it turned out. I will be publishing this at a later date, but for now, give me some more idea's to look into and try out for you guys.
