Chapter 19: Gift of the Night Fury, Epilogue

It was just before sunrise when I felt a paw rubbing against my side and a voice whispering in my ear:

"F-Flint?"

I slowly open my eyes, groggily lifting my head. I'm greeted by none other than Toothless.

"Tooth…what's wrong?"

"Flint…I'm sorry for waking you up…but I…"

I rose from my curled state to meet him eye to eye, the dragon seemed to have a mixture of anxiety yet resolve showing on his draconic visage, "…I'm going to go see the Queen…I would like you to join me."

I pull my head back a little at this…w-why would he be wanting to do this…and so early before sunrise? That's when it hit me…not too long ago I was sneaking out at this time to go see her…I guess it made sense. I look over to his new tail fin to examine it as another thought crosses me: maybe he wanted to settle things with her…or maybe he wanted answers to something?

All I could in return once I silenced my thoughts is scoff at him, "after all this time, you're willing to?"

"She's turned over a new leaf, hasn't she? It seems like you and her are on good terms now?"

I couldn't help but nod back at this.

Tooth's ears fell slightly as he gave a short sigh, "not long ago…I had the same nightmare as before."

"The one where you and Hiccup are chased by fighter jets?"

He nodded, "Flint…I WANT to see your world. I want to see the good things…I want to see where all of this is going to end up…I must know."

By now I sat up on my bed and focused intensely on his green, cat-like, eyes, "Toothless…I…"

He placed a paw on my own and gave a pleading face to me before I could even say what I had to say, "I have to see if the future is worth looking towards." He chuckles softly and silently, looking down to his artificial tail fin, "besides, this tail allows me to go back."

"W-we can get Hiccup to-"

"No" he suddenly stops me, "I just want this to be…between us…please." His big, dog, eyes melted into mine and I couldn't help but look down and nod, having finally relented.

"Okay…okay" I smile, "let's go see her, together."

"Thank you, Flint" suddenly he licks the side of my face before I shake my head in slight protest, "you're never going to stop that, are you?"

He couldn't help but give an innocent look back.

The sun is just below the horizon of the Viking Sea, small blue pockets of light glow faintly on the horizon. Sunrise is imminent…

Toothless and I left Berk on our way to see the Ex-Queen. The teenage Night Fury still had the custom tail fin on, allowing him to fly independently without his rider, Hiccup. As we travel through the dark clouds, Toothless makes a wide grin toward me and starts making maneuvers around me. I can't help but snicker loudly in return, "I must say…it's pretty weird seeing you fly on your own there, pal."

He joined my side once more, his playful smirk never ceasing to end, "Should I say the same about you?"

I roll my eyes in response, but he nods his head as his tone gets more earnest, "no, really, Flint. It must feel weird to be human and flying as if you always had been flying?"

I can't help but scoff, but he persisted incessantly, "how does it feel, Flint, be honest?"

"To be a dragon and flying?" I snorted lightly just before he nodded in return.

"Different…I can't say I loved flying as a human…"

"Oh really?" He looked surprised before he began circling me in midair.

"But now…I…I LOVE flying…it must be my dragon mind…because I absolutely enjoy times like these now."

Toothless gave a soft smile before he stopped by me again and pointed down with a claw, "race 'ya to Helheim!" He roared in glee. Suddenly, he swooped down in haste as my ears perked up, "h-hey!"

I join in, gaining speed as we both nosedive toward the foggy ocean. Unfortunately for me, Toothless is way too fast for me and he knows this.

"Come on Flint, you got to catch up" the Night Fury chuckled up ahead as my eyes watered from the dive. Before any of us can touch the water, we spread our wings for a glide. I try to give myself a boost, but I end up losing balance and I fall!

The teen dragon was looking back when he saw what happened: I had fallen into the water from my mistake. In haste, the beast turns around and picks me up, all in the span of a few seconds. He gave a snorted laugh as I grunted just as loudly to deflect his jest. He lands me on a rock nearby before I shake my head to rid as much cold seawater off me as possible, "maybe you were right…nothing is faster than you…"

The Night Fury couldn't help but give a slight, haughty, laugh at this, "even so, you're fast as well…faster than most dragons…even most of the adults. You could outpace Hookfang or Stormfly if you try hard enough."

Stormfly, I thought to myself. I look up to meet his face with a raised brow, "didn't I tell you yet?"

"About?" He tilted his head as we rested on the rock in the middle of the ocean for a few minutes.

"I told her."

"Did you now?"

I nodded back, "so far only she knows other than you…and the Queen…"

"Speaking of the Queen…we ought to continue our journey" Toothless finished, "Flint, I'd be careful going around and telling everyone about who you are if I were you…not everyone might believe it and they might respond in a not so…positive way…"

"I trust her" I retorted, unfurling my dried wings for flight.

"I…trust her too…she's a good friend. I don't blame your decision…still…be mindful…I think the truth ought to stay between us."

"I understand."

Before I can even take off, Toothless throws me on his back with his head: much to my muted surprise, "oh come on!" I growled softly, soon holding on to him. Soon enough, he takes off and we're both back in the skies only this time I'm riding him.

"What's the point of being a dragon if I'm just riding on your back!?"

"I figured you would appreciate the thought…wouldn't this make you feel more human again?" He asked sincerely.

"I…suppose…" I went silent, looking around. It did feel wonderful riding on his back and being able to take in the scenery a lot more…like he's my chauffeur. I reckon he's doing the kind thing here and I should appreciate the kind gesture, and I do…wholeheartedly. My soft purrs of enjoyment ring in his dragon ears, much to his delight.

"If I'm being honest, Flint…" I heard him say as I open an eye, "…I like your human side more."

I let those words sink in…he must be telling the truth…he is…isn't he?

For all the joys he had with me in my dragon form, what with having a nearly identical Night Fury by his side, my human pedigree fascinated him daily. It's almost as if Hiccup had turned into a dragon and shared many new things with the natural-born dragon…but instead it's me doing it.

Toothless was always the curious type and my situation made him appreciate humans even more, though Hiccup equally contributed to this notion since the day the two met, don't get me wrong.

I held on as Toothless entered the fog, racing through the rocky pillars and broken Viking ships. Once the haze cleared and the volcano came into view, the dragon found himself wrapped in worry and fear suddenly.

The behemoth is nowhere to be found; however, that didn't stop the larger Night Fury from checking every corner in the air. Soon enough, he landed beside the half-broken Volcano before I disembarked, joining him by his side.

"She's…here…" the older Fury muttered.

"I sense her too…did I tell you she can't leave…"

"You did…but what if…"

"It'll be fine" I rested a paw on his arm as he looks down, finally calming himself down.

Right after, as if on cue: we witness two enormous paws emerge from inside the wrecked volcano and a large muzzle comes out. Toothless, in a moment's glance, steps back in despair…his eyes slit, ears and fins pulled back in response to her sudden appearance.

It's the Ex-Queen…and her calm and weak demeanor relays the same thing to the dragon next to me. He still is shocked to see how "damaged" she is from the battle one or two months ago: especially when he focuses on her scarred eyes.

It's clear to Toothless that the Queen's mannerisms are completely different from when he last saw her: never did he see her at peace with herself as he sees the beast now. Not too long ago she was vicious, brutal…repressive…it's like she's a different person now.

Having recovered from the rubble, her voice had returned fully…now softer yet still firm as before: a timbre like Cate Blanchett from my world.

The enormous reptile focused on the two Night Furies below her, "you have returned" her voice echoed throughout the island. She had spoken specifically to Toothless, having caught his scent and read his mind. As a result of the sudden mind read, Toothless gulped in response.

His eyes had become oval as a result and he gritted his teeth in retaliation, "That's something I hoped I would never get to experience again, you getting into my head like that…" he said with a half-growl, half-whine…and he said it in such a contemptuous manner too.

Even so, I gestured for him to come closer, "give her a chance for me…" I whispered in his ear softly.

"I am, it's the reason we're standing here right now…" he snapped back, "if I didn't give her a second chance, she would be dead right now, believe me" Toothless coldly retorted.

The Ex-Queen sensed what he had said and chimed in almost immediately afterward, "I saw your dream, Night Fury."

He looks up with a raised brow in retaliation, "which one" he asked, his tone had suggested that he was being quite snarky with her.

"The nightmare" she deadpanned, "…you and the human boy…chased by the human flying machines…surrounded by their masked soldiers."

Tooth looks down, remembering the events clear as day. The behemoth gestures a paw at us, "you wish to know more about Flint Callahan's realm. I wish to share with you…if you will allow…" she beckoned slowly. Toothless looked toward me and I nodded, giving a smile of encouragement, "you DID come here to see my world after all."

The adolescent dragon stepped forward, closer toward the scarred colossus at the base of the volcano.

Leave us

She had ordered the small band of dragons roosting on the island to leave the three of us alone for the time being. Not objecting, they all took to the skies and disappeared into the fog above.

I soon followed behind. Once we're close enough, the two of us feel the world around us shake and distort. We close our eyes as the Ex-Queen uses her mental abilities to change the scenery around us via telepathy. It's clear to Toothless and me that the three of us are linked together mentally for the moment.

Once the changes are finalized, I, myself, am amazed to see we're now in a large white room.

Toothless, having closed his eyes out of fear opened one eye to examine the interior we both now find ourselves in, "w-what…is this?" I can sense that his heartbeat is elevated, and his shuddering breaths suggest that the dragon is one breath away from panicking.

I look around: the ginormous beast who created this is nowhere to be found; however, we can both "feel" her presence regardless. It's clear she just built this world for us to observe. It doesn't take long for me to realize where we are, she pulled this scene directly from my memories…

There are paintings and other artifacts on display. It's clear that we're now in a museum. I can't believe it! It's almost as if we both had traveled in time to the future, but of course, all this is fake…it still had my mouth open from shock…

Toothless the Night Fury looks back and forth frantically, never having seen such a place so white and bright before in his life. I walk around, taking note of the artwork on the walls above me. The dragon behind me, having finally regained his composure, walks toward me…cowering behind me like a scaredy-cat, "w-where are we, Flint?" He mewed worryingly, his voice echoing throughout the place as if we were in a cave.

This is what humans from the future call…a museum

We heard the Queen in our thoughts, "that word…Flint said that before, I remember now…" Toothless muttered silently, almost to himself.

Humans in the future come to places such as these to appreciate works of art and their history

Once she explained, Toothless stared at some paintings across from us…realizing what they were…remembering the drawings Hiccup had made in his spare time. Being familiar with the art, he trotted over to one such painting to examine it. The work is a portrait depicting a man with a 'lute' which is a musical instrument from the dragon's era.

"W-wow!" Toothless boomed in excitement and awe, having perked up suddenly, "this is…incredible! It's like they're staring right back at me…it's so realistic!"

I smiled inwardly, quietly hopping on him to rest against his long neck, "yup…it'll be a while before we get to this point in human history…"

"What do you mean?" He asked, looking back at me with a calm side-eye.

"Humans won't have this sophisticated form of art for centuries" I said, regrettably.

"What a shame…" his ears drooped at the realization, "still, this is fantastic, if only I could draw like this!" Toothless murmured softly. I couldn't help but think about it, imagine if he COULD…that would be pretty cool to see.

From what I can find within Callahan's mind…is that humans will gradually invent new methods to create their art…in a period that will be known to them as the Renaissance…

"Renai?" Toothless tilted his head, looking in the air as if she were above.

"Renaissance, basically a rebirth in human culture…your time isn't exactly the best in history, buddy" I added.

"Really…"

"Unfortunately…" I nodded back.

Suddenly, the dragon looked back, curiosity flooding his face for the past few minutes now, "are you an artist, Flint?"

I shake my head in return, "not really…" is all I said. The Ex-Queen could feel my sadness: his question having reminded me of Sophia…

Before the adult Fury could ask, the behemoth changed the scene around us again and we both find ourselves outside on top of a cliff. Again, Toothless panicked a bit but soon recovered, looking around.

The sky is blue with sparse clouds and there is grass underneath us. The "wind" is calm and soothing. Looking over the edge, the older Night Fury can see a town that immediately confuses him. His ear fins perked up and he had to blink several times to make sure he wasn't dreaming:

Below us is a sprawling human city…with several skyscrapers along with other aspects of modern life. The medieval dragon looks up to see planes flying overhead, leaving chemtrails behind. The rivers are filled with boats and barges: all passing by one another. And, along the hillside and steel yellow bridges are hundreds of automobiles that are commuting to and from work.

The black dragon next to me almost couldn't take it, I can tell he is so overwhelmed by it all that he collapses a bit. I rushed over to help, but he immediately stands up again, gesturing me to step away despite wobbling a bit, "I'm fine, sorry…"

This is what humans will become…

We heard her voice echo like some Goddess hidden in the clouds above us.

"It's so different…so different from Berk and everything else…is this...is this Berk?" He stuttered his lines, and I patted his shoulder in response to calm him. I tried laughing a bit to help too, "actually, this is what we will call…Pittsburgh."

"Where's that?" he asked, beaming with curiosity.

"Far from Berk, that's for sure…" I shrug.

It appears Berk does not exist in Callahan's realm…

Toothless drooped upon hearing that from the Queen, but he expected that. Nothing but mountains could survive THAT LONG into the future. Maybe…the village moved elsewhere or something, the Fury didn't want to believe it no longer exists…still…could it be true? Berk, the Vikings…even dragons…nowhere to be found in this future world…at all…it made him shiver.

I nudged him quite affectionately like a house cat as he looked down to meet my green eyes. He nodded softly as if accepting this revelation despite finding it quite bittersweet. The world around us changed again not long after.

We spent the next few minutes glancing over modern times as well as other aspects of humanity like travel, space, etc. Toothless knew, by this point, that humans were destined to rise, but then, depictions of conflict were shown by the Queen, and Toothless was horrified by them. We saw intense battles taking place, and advanced machinery being used…all of which horrified Toothless to the core. He couldn't help but curl himself up and shut his eyes.

"S-stop it!" I yelled above in response, my voice drowned in heavy gunfire and explosions.

Upon feeling his misery and despair and hearing my voice, the Queen had stopped the scene.

"W-why…" is all Toothless can ask once he unfurled.

"All of this…it happens…yes it sucks…but think: the good outweighs the bad in humanity. Toothless…I won't sugarcoat it…humans are terrible…but not all of them are…and we've made great strides to better ourselves…believe me."

The teen dragon seemed to believe my statement more once the Ex-Queen drew from my memories: images of wind turbines, solar panels, clean energy, and not to mention humanity's efforts to save endangered species.

"If Furies are endangered as I think they are…we would honestly protect them…try our best to save them from extinction."

Extinction…he thought solemnly. By this point, Toothless had been sitting down, trying his best to absorb as much information about the future as possible. Once again it all felt too much for the reptile and I decided to have the Queen end the session.

Suddenly, however, we end up in the same white room from the beginning, yet this time all the paintings and other works of art are gone.

I look over to my right and see a familiar instrument that I have not seen in a while, "oh…" my rabbit-like ears suddenly rise, "oh! Toothless, you ought to see this!" I prance over and gesture toward the device.

He arrives and sniffs it carefully, "w-what is it?"

"It's called a piano. If you ask me, it's humanity's greatest instrument…I don't think it's around just yet…I really wish you could hear one…" my ears drooped.

"H-how does it work, exactly?" Toothless asked sincerely, placing a claw on one of the keys. The sudden sound it makes causes him to jump in the air like a scared feline, and I can't help but giggle at what just happened, "I don't know how to play it…kind of wish I did…I wish you could hear how it sounds…Toothless…"

All of a sudden, I hear the Queen's voice echo in my mind:

Leave it to me, Mr. Callahan…

As if on cue…a blurred humanoid figure forms and begins playing the piano in front of us…a scene created by the Queen for our amusement.

The first keys are struck and the familiar tune echoes in the room and my eardrums…and my eyes begin to slowly swell…

The song is called: To a Wild Rose by Edward MacDowell.

It's a familiar song that I know all too well…and not having heard music like this in a good while…well…it sent me into an emotional hole. I began to whimper and cry, both from joy and sorrow.

"It...it sounds...so nice..." Tooth says softly, appreciating the soft and warm tone the instrument is making, "it...it makes me feel...nostalgic...why...why do I suddenly feel this way?"

That's when Toothless next to me notices my weeping form with a side-eye, "F-Flint, are you okay?"

I wipe tears off my muzzle as I sniffle softly, "y-yea…just…I know this song personally…my mother used to play it when I was very young…to help me sleep…" I closed my eyes as I continued weeping. Toothless began holding me to calm my nerves, "it's okay…"

"Oh God…what must she be thinking right now…will I ever see her again…"

Right before the musical piece finishes, Toothless gestures to the invisible Queen to end the projections. She decides to and sure enough, we end up on the volcanic island once again, having returned to reality once more. Everything fell silent…

The teen Night Fury glances over at me as the Ex-Queen took this time to rest, placing her enormous chin on the side of the volcano. Ironic that it wasn't Toothless who finally broke from all the things we saw…but instead was me…

"T-that was…"

"Too much…" Toothless added in as I bobbed silently.

Both native dragons gave me a few minutes to compose myself. By this point, my tears had dried, and I couldn't cry anymore. My thoughts were soon turned to everything we had experienced in the Queen's mental world.

"It's a shame…" I muttered under my breath before Tooth rolls his head to the side, sitting beside me.

"What is?"

"Dragons…they're nowhere to be found in my time" I shake my head in despair.

"Maybe they went into hiding, you never know" he suggested but that didn't seem to help very much, "I honestly don't know if our worlds are even connected to one another…" I added.

"Come again?"

By this point, I recovered just enough that I begin circling him as if I were the teacher and Toothless: my pupil, "there's this…human theory of multiple versions of the same world…it's called the Multiverse."

Tooth seemed to perk at this, his ears and ear fins responding in synch, "Multiverse?"

"How can I simplify this…" I place a claw to my chin, "…imagine events changing to things that lead to different outcomes…resulting in different worlds. What if Hiccup never shot you down, what if I didn't end up here and met you, what if Hiccup became a dragon instead of me, or what if you and I died on that snowy mountain the day you rescued me? Even crazier, imagine a world where you and I are just thought up by a person for some kid's little bedtime story?"

"That's…quite wild…to say the least" he found the idea preposterous, but interesting.

"Point is…maybe your future will be very different from mine."

"But Flint…" Toothless suddenly stood up from the charred sand, his face bright as ever, "what if…you were brought here to change the future?"

I rolled my eyes at that, "I doubt that very much…"

"Seriously" he stopped me with a paw on my shoulder, "what if you're here to make sure dragons make it to your time, so humans and dragons can live together as they do now?"

"Seems pretty ambitious, Toothless…" I walked away a bit, "how can someone like me…do it? How can I, one measly human…surrounded by millions…BILLIONS in my era…be the one to do it?"

"Flint…why must you put yourself down like this?" He shakes his head as his tail flicked in disapproval.

"I'm just saying…" I shake my head.

"Look at what Hiccup did…" he deadpanned and that alone silenced me. His tone suggested encouragement, "I believe in you…I don't care if we weren't supposed to meet, this is our world and you're a part of it."

I grimaced at the thought…what if he's right, what if that is my purpose for being here? Even then…how will I accomplish such a task? Why was I so specially picked out of everybody to be here?

As if she answered my pleas to distract me from my thoughts, the Queen opened her scarred eyes and looked down:

Callahan may be right about dragons hiding in his time…

Toothless and I looked up to the Queen:

There is a place…the original home of dragons…a place under the surface where dragons lived…have you heard of it, Night Fury?

"Can't say I have…" he said, raising an eyebrow.

It's what the humans call: the Hidden World…perhaps one day you will see it as I had, it is possible that in the future we all have returned to our ancestral dwelling

"Maybe she's right…" I stepped in, "maybe because humans became more numerous, dragons had to seek refuge elsewhere…because our cities encroached on their environment and stuff…that would explain everything…" I suggested.

Toothless pondered at the thought for a while as silence gripped us three. Eventually, something in me wanted to know…wanted to see now that we're here. I looked toward the other Night Fury with a burning question on my mind, "Queen…is it possible that you could show me…his world…"

The other dragon across from me gave a befuddled expression, looking toward me like an intrigued Labrador, tail slithering behind him, "m-my world?"

I nodded, "I want to see how you lived before your tribe disappeared…I want to see…"

Toothless seemed flattered by this request, he knew I had become so fascinated with dragons that I wanted to experience their culture firsthand.

The blind Queen above us acknowledged my request and immediately after Toothless and I are thrown back, once again, into the illusions made by the behemoth.

This time, however, it's through the Night Fury's memories, not mine.

First, we witness what appears to be his mother watching over what I assume to be his egg, a black sphere and the only one around. Soon, it starts to rock back and forth as I witness the birth of a Night Fury…the birth of Toothless. The dragon across from me is fixated on his mother, and it doesn't take long for him to get emotional inside.

I see the baby Fury, which is smaller than me, escape the confines of his shell and be nudged by his loving mother.

Then, the scene changes and we see the hatchling taking his first steps alongside his parents and the Night Fury tribe that lived with them at the time. Inside the cave, the group eats, sleeps, and plays together. I can see the Furies hanging like bats, sleeping soundly without a care in the world…and outside they "dance" under the light of the moon.

I see a pair of Furies lovingly embracing each other in the corner while another pair have a tug of war with their meal.

Next to me is a weeping Toothless…witnessing his young memories playing out in front of him. I couldn't help but nudge my head against his drooping head.

"Oh, Flint…"

"I know…"

He pulled away, placing a paw on the side of my face suddenly, "you may not be a Fury technically…but…it feels great seeing another…"

"No…listen…" I interrupted him, "I AM a Night Fury…just like you…I may be human inside…I may not have been born as one, but here I am...I'm one of your kind…I've accepted that." I can't help but hug him as he returns the gesture, "you know…if I had been born a Night Fury, it would have been great…growing up with you..."

"Even so, you're my brother, you know that…" he rubbed his paw against my head as I couldn't help but chirp back to him, "but I'm sure my parents would have loved having you around with us" he added.

Suddenly, he saw it…a strange object that his baby counterpart had been playing with during most of the flashbacks. He closes his eyes and sends a message to the Queen.

That's when the scenery around us fades and we return to the shore of Dragon Island. I had wanted to see more, so I was rightfully confused…looking toward Toothless. He, however, had motioned the Ex-Queen above and she suddenly lowered a gigantic paw where she opened it to reveal something inside…

We moved closer to see it…it looks to be some type of…medallion?

Toothless takes the medallion from her paw as he sniffles a bit, "thank you…"

Then, the Fury turned toward me and displayed the artifact in front of me, "this…is a human charm I found on the island I lived on as a hatchling. I've had it with me for a very long time…I had it stowed away in my roost when I lived in this volcano" he gestured above with his head, "once I was old enough, I figured I would never need for it again…I decided to cast it aside, but then I thought about you recently…I'm surprised it's still around…"

He gestured me to open a paw and I reluctantly do so, "I want you to have this…so that…if you can go home to where you belong…it'll be with you…and with it, I'll always be with you…no matter where you are."

I couldn't help but become tearful after he said this, my paw shakes as Toothless rests the medallion on my paw. I look up at him and smile, "it's my gift to you, Flint."

I examine the bronze artifact: it has the body of an unknown dragon on it, in a style reminiscent of medieval art. There are words on it…but they're in a language I'm unfamiliar with…and it's so old that the letters are too worn to decipher anyways. Either way, it's a neat gift if I may say so.

"Thank you, Toothless" I hugged him once again as he nods, "thanks for being here, Flint…and thank you for helping us…Queen…"

She bows her head in respect and that made the Night Fury a bit shocked at first. He couldn't believe it: this beast used to scorn and punish him…and now she had nothing but the utmost respect for Toothless.

"We ought to find a name for you" he heard me say to her, "I reckon I'll find one…"

He chuckled, lightly slapping my back with his wing, "it'll have to wait, I just realized just how long we've been here. We ought to head back to Berk."

"You may be right…I guess we'll catch 'ya later" I waved to the Ex-Queen, "farewell" she responded softly.

We returned to Berk by the time the sun is up, though Toothless had detoured…heading for the forge. He told me to wait by the house in the meantime, and I didn't object. As I wait, I sit on the rooftop examining the bronze medallion he gave me…

A few minutes pass and I hear him above, carrying equipment. At first, I'm confused, especially when I realize that it's his saddle and red tailfin.

He lands below next to the house and sets them down, "I figured Hiccup isn't awake yet. Go ahead and wake him" he grinned before I smiled, "oh…I get why you brought that here now…" I said while the Fury nodded in return.

I started jumping up and down and eventually, the young Viking came outside to meet us…

"I'm coming you guys…alright, who is it this time" Hiccup chuckled but stops to see Toothless in front of him with the gear beside him.

Haddock is wracked with confusion, "what'd you pull this out for…you don't need this anymore" he brushes the saddle beside with his prosthetic foot, "come on bud, let's-" suddenly, Toothless gets in the way, motioning the equipment in the snow.

"Tooth-will you stop fooling around? You've got your new tail now, bud…" he stops, seeing the Night Fury look down at it. I decide to jump down from the roof to join them.

"He's not getting it…" the teen dragon muttered under his breath to me.

"Suppose we drop hints then…" I suggested.

"That's what I've been doing…"

"You got to be more…how you say…animated…" I chuckle.

I sit on my hind legs, acting as the interpreter for the human: using gestures to help convey Tooth's desire to saddle up and ride with Hiccup. I point to the new tailfin and shake my head to Haddock. As if to add garnish to my meat, I pick up the red tailfin and display it in front of Toothless and his tail.

The Viking seems amazed by my charades and is won over by Tooth's puppy eyes, but ultimately understands what the larger dragon wants from him.

"Flint…I did think of discarding this new fin…but maybe I'll…have it around…in case I need to go somewhere with you again…otherwise, I would destroy it here and now" Toothless happily mewled and I shrugged, "fine with me."

I suppose he's right: it's clear to me that he prefers to ride with Hiccup than to use the new tail…I don't think he'll have much use of it other than what he just stated. Maybe one day he'll use it again…maybe someday soon, but for now I help Hiccup remove the new contraption and set it down. The Berkian then puts the old gear on Toothless along with the old red fin.

Toothless licks the boy in the face, seeing as how they were meant to fly together…that was his gift to Hiccup…the gift of friendship…the best kind the two of them know.

And so, we set off for the skies…all three of us. We challenged ourselves, as we often did. As we reached the top of the cloud cover, the human got off the Night Fury and the three of us dived into the ground at high speeds. The feeling of the wind blowing against me sent me into a state of euphoria and I sensed the ground near as Toothless did. We both opened our wings just after Hiccup mounted the dragon once again. We speed through the blue skies as we cheer in delight, our lives are woven together like tight fabric…unbroken…our bond closer than ever.

I guess Hiccup was right…this is the BEST Snoggletog ever…and it's my first one. These past few days have been crazy…in a good way…and I, for one, can't wait to see what happens next!

Phew! That's the end of the film short "Gift of the Night Fury." Now, there is a BIG difference when compared to the original ending: the new fin Toothless had destroyed in the original short is not destroyed in this version. It's stated in HTTYD3 that Tooth really had no reason to keep the fin for himself to fly, but I figured that because of Flint this alternate version of Toothless decided to keep the fin for future use. One of the reasons I feel is because he would want to fly with Flint alone, possibly to see the Ex-Queen on future endeavors…or possibly have it for something important later on…hehe.

Anyways, I hope you readers enjoyed this recent addition to Brothers, I'll see you all next time, peace!
