LEFT 4 DEAD
Even being in a war doesn't prepare you for this.
They come at you and come at you and they never God damn stop.
That was what he said to himself as he lay against the generator three monsters of the infected towered above him roaring in fury as they were more than ready to snuff out his light once and for all, "I'll be with you in just a second..." he managed with a fit of coughing as he lit up his last cigarette, looking up at the three tanks as his m16 clattered out of his grasp to the ground next to him... the blood pooling up under him, "have at me you bastards..." he muttered as the monsters advanced on him...
Sometimes you just can't unmake how things end up...
Chapter 1: We just crossed the Street
The last four humans in Fairfield Pennsylvania… the odds were not looking good
Fairfield 2 weeks after first infection
The city of Fairfield, Pennsylvania… once a bustling city in the north of America, many families and people simply trying to live their lives were once here, and then the flu came and turned society in the states into a horror addicts worst nightmare… even now 14 days into a supposed flu epidemic there was still no clear answer… the government and the police the military… all gone fleeing while they still could… because within the first week there was nothing left.
The population was either dead… or one of the walking infected abominations that now craved the flesh and bloody murder of any poor soul that still happened to be alive, at first it was simple take up arms and defend yourselves against the undead menace, but then things got worse, the infected began to change and develop… new variants with unique capabilities began to rise up amongst the already normal infected and quickly the population of humans dropped and dropped… until now there was seemingly no one left.
Blood, rotten or half eaten bodies, fires and damaged or destroyed vehicles or buildings all around for the still humans eyes to see and the only eyes that now lingered throughout the whole city were certainly not human, they were pale and white, completely devoid of anything resembling humanity… until they laid eyes on someone not in their own image… then the eyes would turn a deep crimson as they began to hiss and scream and thrash around violently as the anger and rage boiled to the surface and then they would strike.
With no end in sight and no plan or possible escape route what do the last surviving humans do to keep themselves going… they take up arms and fight until their last breathes, clinging on to the vain but relevant hope that somehow someway… this will all be dealt with one day, that the military will come back and cleanse the world of the infected menace… until then they will do it themselves until they can find salvation one way or another… curing the infection one bullet at a time, in a dark alleyway in a more quieter part of the city 4 cones of light began shinning through the darkness of the alley way the seemingly last survivors in the city being the ones to light their path forward as they search desperately around them for a safe room, or somewhere to rest and of course for any sign of the enemy.
The old man leads the way… a grizzled 70 plus year old war vet who did his duty in the Vietnam war, he had seen some shit and after that war was over, he was discharged with a hand full of medals, but after that his life went flat… going from dead end job to dead end job… until that fateful night when the infected returned and he was giving a war to take part in once again… being put into surgery to finally have work done on his busted knee, and right as they were administering the stuff to put him under, the nurse behind the doctor became the first person he ever saw succumb to the green flu, attacking the nurse and brutally murdering her in front of his eyes as he quickly came to his senses and sliced her down with a bone saw. He frantically ran from the hospital returning to his home as screaming and shouting occurred all around him, getting back in the old Vietnam gear and taking up his old trusty M16 assault rifle a souvenir of his old war days… he took up arms and re-joined the war once again… Marching forward with clearly the most confidence of the group dressed in his military attire including the black army boots and beret atop of his greying head, his face adorned with a greying beard illuminated by a cigarette hanging out the left side of his mouth as his face was grim and determined. He had spent the last week and a half trying to get the three misfits that walked along behind him out of this city and why time and time again he had not succeeded he was certainly not going to give up now, he would see peace back on earth even if he ended up down to fighting the sick bastards off with his bare knuckles, "stay close don't get split up" he said low and dangerous voice as he lead the group forward, his M16 held tightly in his grip as he had his combat knife and a magnum handgun in his holster around his waist as well as the backpack filled with ammo on his back which had been heavier a few days earlier... but recently increasing infected presence meant that it was now starting to become an issue.
Behind him was the youngster of the group the one who placed the must trust in his leadership as his had been the first face she had seen since the horrid day her mother and farther perished as she was exposed to her first signs of the infected... after the incident when she was was forced to give her own father a mercy killing she ran and hid herself away as people were screaming and dying all around her as the infected monsters hunted them down like lambs to the slaughter, hiding in a shed and balling her eyes out for as long as she could remember before the door was pried open and the form of a grizzled war veteran stood in front of her holding his hand out for her to climb to her feet and join him in the fight against the menace that now ravaged their world. Still a teen and being a college drop out Zoey spent most of her time in class watching old horror movies... at least she had the cold comfort of knowing that she was studying up on the right subject leading up to the shit world she now found herself stuck in. Wearing a short sleeved white shirt with a red track jacket from her college over the top, jeans and black and white converse on her feet she was a fairly straight forward young woman who was now in a not very straight forward world where everyone bar three people were trying to kill her. The teams only remaining first aid kit on her back she was learned very early on that the infected had no quarrels hurting people and they left and few cuts and bruises when they were lucky enough to take you by surprise, she followed closely behind the old man with much more nervousness in her steps as her wary eyes scanned all around her looking for danger as she held 2 M1911 handguns tightly in her hands.
Behind her was a man far different to herself and the man leading the way forward, a man who went from working in an office wearing designer clothing to fighting the horde in the space of two days, despite the shit world he now found himself living in he was by far the most positive of the group which sometimes really got onto the others nerves... Louis a average man from a basic office job living his life to the fullest... he would go to the rifle range during his lunch break to let off some steam which his colleagues would often mock him for, now considering they were most likely all dead... he was fairly certain that it wasn't so damn funny now considering he was one of the last men standing. Wearing a white button up shirt with a red tie on, designer trousers and shoes and a smart watch on his left wrist, he walked forward with a weary set of eyes but a heart full of hope that sooner rather then later him and his team would find the way out of the city, and that no matter what it took or what stood in their way they would pull through and make it out the nightmare they now lived... unfortunately his optimism was not shared with the last member of the group who quite literally was his exact opposite... Francis, walking forward with his Uzi held tight in his hands as he had the backpack filled with the teams food and drink which like the ammo bag was starting to become rather light...
The man at the back of the group was far different then his peers, when the infection first hit he was almost about to be sent to prison when he was spending his last day a free man meeting up with some old friends and a girl he had been hitting it off with, only for her to turn infected right in front of him and try to maul him to bits, he remembered that night well... because not soon after he got separated from his biker friends and assume that they didn't make it... now he was stuck with three people that he did not fit in with in the slightest... a grizzled war veteran that he clashed with at basically any available conjuncture... while it was true that he and Bill didn't get along he still respected the man's place as the leader of the group and deep down... had respect for a literal Vietnam war vet now taking on the horde of the undead. The girl was fine but she was soo far stuck up the old buzzards ass sometimes it led to them clashing and as for the positive office worked... Francis couldn't understand why Louis was soo positive in the situation they were in but he had a theory that perhaps it was his coping mechanism for the absolute shit show he was no stuck in and in that sense Francis couldn't blame him... didn't make his over positiveness any less annoying however. He was definitely the biggest of the group well over 6 ft clad in black chaps and a short sleeved white vest with a black leather jacket over it that was no a multitude of different colours due to his contact with the infected, arms big and muscular and covered with various tattoos including symbols of the group he was associated with, holding firmly in his grasp a pump action shotgun which he had claimed many lives with and a crowbar strapped to his back which he had been using to open uncooperative doors. He hummed to himself quietly as he tagged along at the back of the group looking up momentarily as thunder struck above letting him though that soon rain would be falling on the twisted city of the dead, the war veteran continued to lead the way wanting to keep good pace as he wanted to try and find shelter quick and fast before the rain really started coming down, though considering how much shit their clothes were covered in maybe some water wouldn't be such a bad thing...
He continued up the alley noticing some distance ahead that a collection of corpses with one had its hand raised into the air and was noticeably missing a thumb but that was not what caught the old mans attention, against the wall was what looked like the bottom half of a rather bloated infected with lots of green goo hanging around the corpse and now around the wall as well, "hold up" he said with a quick raise of his hand as he bent down the thunder going off above again, he took a small portion of the stuff in between his finger and his thumb frowning, "ain't seen anything like this before" he said quietly as the group waited anxiously behind him, "Jesus don't let that stop you from smearing it all over yourself..." Francis grumbled clearly disapproving of simply touching any kind of fluid that they happened to come across. Bill simply stood back up and turn around wiping his hand of Francis's leather jacket as he recoiled in shock, "their changing..." he simply said as Francis cursed, "god damnit Bill ugh it stinks..." he retorted as Louis chuckled as Zoey looked away from the exchange before all of them found themselves freezing as a rather haunting sound had reached their ears letting them know that something or someone was nearby.
They all stopped as sobbing could be heard, a woman by the sounds of it, looking all around them Bill turned 180 degrees towards a door leading into an unknown room behind them in the brick work of the building next to them, he frowned, while it was a woman crying the crying itself was not what he would consider natural... also why had she not drawn the attention of any infected, "someone is still alive..." Zoey said her eyes wide with fear but her tone of voice suggested to the old man that she had hope that maybe it was a woman, he looked at the other two who looked uneasy, Francis rubbing the back of his neck as the old man nodded at the young girl slowly approaching the door as she joined him, he pushed the door open revealing a pitch black room, the sobbing now much louder. "Over there" he said as lighting went off once briefly lighting the room but nothing could be seen, Zoey switched on the flashlight of one of her handguns and began to follow the old man deeper into the dark room as the sobbing of the woman continue, Francis and Louis waited anxiously outside as the moved further inside lightning going off around them, "hello?" Zoey called out as the sobbing continued their was a corner of the room hidden by a table and it seems they had finally found the source of the crying Zoey moving closer as her light began to hover over the woman on the floor in a fatal position rocking back and fourth as she sobbed, "hey its ok we are here to he..." she never got the chance to finish as the reality of the situation hit them. Right as Zoey moved to hover her light over the woman the lightning went off again and showed the horrific truth, as the flash briefly lit up the room they noticed a large pool of blood in the corner of the room, showing several mangled and decapitated corpses lying against the wall next to the crying woman, and more importantly the woman was now confirmed as the worst case scenario... she was one of the them... the infected menace, the brief flash of light showed her skin was a deathly pale grey and that she had very little clothing still attached to her body, "lights off!" Bill hissed pulling Zoey' light away and switching it off before they were able to fully illuminate the infected woman. Both of them now stared warily at the sobbing woman who had not even seemed to notice their presence yet as she continued to sob... "shit..."Bill cursed under his breathe as Zoey's eyes were now wide and filled with fear.
Francis and Louis stood with their back to the door, Francis thought he had heard footsteps back down the alley where they had come from as both he and his colleague looked around scanning for any signs of danger, "what the hell is taking them soo long have they found a survivor or not?" Louis said wanting an answer now more then ever, "I don't know why don't you go and ask them?" Francis retorted sarcastically as Louis scoffed before looking up in shock as hissing and shouting became audible... he narrowed his eyes before they went wide as his worst suspicions were confirmed, as many dark hissing figures began to charge down the alley towards them, the infected had caught up with them it was time to leave. "Oh shit, shit, shit... they are coming!" he yelled running towards the door as Francis began to fire his shotgun, he ran into the room shouting and he soon wished he hadn't, his light shinned across the woman who then snapped her head up with a shrill shriek hissing loudly as quickly rose to her feet her arms shaking as deep crimson eyes stared back at him full of hatred her fingers revealed to have grown into thick long bloody claws several inches long, "run like hell!" Zoey yelled as they quickly ran for the door, Bill firing a burst as the woman gave chase, Louis slammed the door shut and leaned against it hoping to keep the wraith woman at bay. Several bangs occurred on the door before he yelled in shock as a flailing bloody and clawed hand ripped through the door and began to jerk around looking for a throat to tear out as he began to unload with his Uzi as his colleagues fired at the infected charging down the alley way, hey continued firing yelling as the arm continued its assault, "how do you like that!" he yelled as finally the woman seemed to succumb to his hail of bullets and it fell back into the room as he ejected his spent mag and put in another joining his allies in gunning down the horde, "stick together!" Francis yelled over the booming shots of his weapon as a smoking figured appeared on a fire escape behind them from above.
It screamed loudly before a long rubber tongue like appendage shot from his mouth and wrapped around the old man, pulling him away from the others as it began to hold him under the fire escape the assault rifle clattering to the ground alerting Francis he was in need of assistance, he turned around aiming up and blasting the infected twice causing it to let the old man go as it exploded leaving a large cloud of thick green smoke above them as Bill slowly clambered to his feet, Francis gunning down two infected attacking him from both sides as Bill finally got back up the biker handing him back his M16, "merry Christmas" he said as Bill took the weapon but silently nodded his thanks as they re-joined the others, Zoey lighting the groups last pipe bomb before pressing the button, "fire in the hole!" she yelled throwing the device forward as the twenty or so infected that were left charged for it scratching and clawing each other as the device finally went off. Showering body parts and blood mist in the air as Louis was alerted by something shinning above them, looking up to his utter amazement a helicopter, he suddenly ran after it yelling as the others cursed before going to move after him Zoey moving the quickest as he ran out onto the main street unaware of the hooded figure stalking him from above leaping across the rooftops to keep up with him, "down here we are not infected, down here!" he yelled waving his arms as the helicopter drifted off seemingly not seeing him, "damnit!" he yelled as the figure hanged off the side off a building growling as it eyed him down. With lighting speed the figure leapt with an ear piercing scream Louis turning around as it landed right on top of him pushing him down to the ground under its weight as it began to claw away at him he cried out as it tore through his shirt and began cutting up his chest and drawing blood, Zoey emerged from the alleyway and charged into the infected knocked it off of him as she began to unload with both handguns, he pulled his own from his side and together they shot it dead as its body landed against the boot of a car.
As Bill and Francis emerged out into the street the car began to blare an alarm much to their horror as Louis gingerly got to his feet hissing as his short was now ripped as his chest was dripping blood, "ah this is gonna get bad" Bill said calmly as screaming and hissing began to rise up and echo all around them, they moved to the middle of the street, looking all around them as they began to see dark shadows emerging of the walls and all sources of light around them, then they came, a thick solid wall of the infected charging around the corner as they gripped their weapons tightly, seeing the road sealed off with a chain link fence behind them, hearing infected climbing over them as they all seemed frozen in that exact moment. Bill frowned although he had a strong sense of determination as he gripped the rifle tight but Zoey and Louis looked all around them their eyes wide and filled with terror, Francis however simply looked forward back down the street with a stern face as suddenly a loud roar could be heard followed by something smashing a car thirty feet into the air towards them, it bounced several times before crashing through the chain link fence taking out over a hundred over infected along the way as the group became alerted as thundering footsteps began to make their way towards them, they began to back slowly away as through the mass of infected a large 12 foot tall muscular tanned beast began to punch and smash its way through the lesser infected roaring along the way. "Run or shoot?" Louis asked as the beast trundled closer taking out every smaller infected in its path deeming them an annoyance, "run or shoot!" Louis yelled again, "both!" Bill yelled as they took off down an alleyway opposite to the one they just emerged from, the beast bellowed and smashed its way through the lesser infected blocking its path towards the survivors it intended to destroy, the survivors turned the corner seeing a metal stairwell that lead up the side of the apartment building next to them, "get to the roof" Louis yelled as Zoey charged up the stairwell followed closely by the man in question who began gasping with each step as his chest began to burn with pain.
Bill and Francis stood back to back blasting away as the thundering footsteps grew closer, "come on... come on!" Francis grunted as the monster charged around the corner the ground shaking underneath each of its massive steps, he fired away nailing the beast with many of his pellets as blood splattered everywhere, but the monster was not fazed as it simply picked up a common infected and slammed it into the man sending him crumpling into a wall as he grunted in pain, Bill turned to face the danger seeing the monster going in for the kill on his downed ally, he unloaded a full mag of the M16 into it causing it to change targets and slam into the wall next to him as he barely ducked out of the way, the best ripped a chunk of the wall out of the wall and flung it at the stairwell as Francis had begun climbing up barely missing as it dented the stairwell, Bill ran for the stairwell looking up as handgun fire blew the heads off of two infected coming at him from either side. "Go ill hold them off!" Zoey yelled firing away as Bill scaled the stairwell as the beast yelled pulling itself up, however as it neared the top the stairwell began to dent and bend and pull away, Bill reached the top as the stairwell began to give away, the giant yelled as it reached up again, the stairwell began to groan and pull away as Zoey was pulled back losing one of her handguns, the stairwell gave and she ran back as quick as she could reaching her hand out for Francis, "Francis!" she yelled as his hand clasped around her arm as the best yelled one final time getting crushed under the horrid metal that landed down on top of its body.
Zoey was pulled onto the roof collapsing onto her knees as the three of them gasped for breath, Louis leaning against the wall clutching his chest with gritted teeth, "we made it... I can't believe we made it!" he yelled before gasping, "son we just crossed the street" came the cold voice of the veteran sitting down on the step in front of them as he lit another cigarette as thunder and lightning went off above them, he stood up the light from his cancer stick illuminating his greying aging face, he walked to the other side of the rooftop looking down at the thick wall of infected stumbling around the street below, he looked back at his friends a grim look on his face, "lets not throw a party until we are out of this city" he finished as they looked up at the sky as the rain that had been threatening to drop down on them finally decided to make their night that much more worse. While the other two men simply remained silent as the old man sat watching the street below, the young woman pulled her knees to her chest as she began to shiver the biting cold creeping up her spine as the rain poured down on them, she hoped the old man would find the way out for them soon, she remembered his first words he said to her when he found her in the shed, "ill get you out of this city I promise..." she hoped now more then ever he was right... as things stood they were the only ones left and the authorities and military had left the city in the dust... she prayed a few small tears streaming down her face... they had really been Left 4 Dead.
