With Courage I Will Face
Arc II: Pewter
Chapter Seven: The Boulder Badge
Okay, so tomorrow had been ambitious, Ash realized midway through the morning.
They were not on a time crunch, unless you counted wanting to rub the smug look off face of the man selling stones as soon as possible a time crunch. There was no reason to rush, so after learning Brick Break Ash took another two days to train. They had been in Pewter City for a week now and made excellent progress.
It was when Pikachu was finally able to cut through more rocks than Butterfree could psychically throw at him that Ash considered the move up to par and usable in a gym battle. So, they all turned in that night knowing their first big battle was tomorrow.
Ash and Misty had made sure to get directions to the Gym from Nurse Joy before setting out and they made their way there in no time.
The front of the building was covered by a large grey rock with openings carved in it to fit the doors and two wood pillars, supporting the wood frame triangle above the door. In the center of the triangle the words 'PEWTER CITY GYM' were neatly carved into the stone.
Ash hesitated for only a moment before pushing the door open and stepping inside with Misty quickly following him.
The inside was dark, and they could only see blue shadows everywhere. The building was silent.
"Hello?" Ash questioned nobody. "Is there anybody here?" He waited for a beat. "I'm here for a gym battle!"
All the lights turned on at once. There was an entire battlefield in front of them now, complete with rock formations jetting from the floor. There was people around too, dressed in grey vests. Ash knew it was what identified them as gym staff or students. The one man not dressed in grey was directly across the battlefield. He wore an orange T-shirt under a green vest and brown pants. He had brown spikey hair that stuck out more upwards than Ash's own spikey hair, and he looked out at them with interest.
"You? You're light years away from facing Brock!" One of the gym students laughed out loud.
"That's funny, I thought I was gonna do that in a couple minutes." Ash shot back. Misty held back a smile.
"Are you Gym Leader Brock?" Ash asked, now turning to the man in the green vest.
"I am." His voice was deep, but not as deep as Ash expected. He sounded rather young. "It is a gym battle you're here for?"
"It is." Ash nodded. Brock nodded back.
"There is a staircase to your left for your friend to make her way up to the balcony- that is where she can safely watch our battle. I hope you don't mind; my brothers and sisters will be watching us as well." Brock told them. "I assume this is your first gym battle?"
Ash could feel himself being sized up. He refused to feel intimidated.
"I don't mind. And yes," He answered confidently. "It's my first gym battle of the big eight."
Brock tried not to be surprised at the statement as he hummed, walking back to the wall behind him and picking up two Pokeballs.
"I see. Another one for the big eight so soon." Brock said, more to himself than anyone. "You will have your work cut out for you."
"We like a challenge, don't we Pikachu?" Ash replied, clenching his fist. Pikachu agreed sharply.
"I hope you have more Pokemon than just a Pikachu if you want to earn any badges in the big eight. This battle will be a two-on-two. The first trainer with both Pokemon unable to continue battling loses, and you may substitute your Pokemon at any time, as the challenger." Brock started, taking his place on the other side of the battle field.
"I understand the rules." Ash agreed. He squared his shoulders as Brock nodded. They both unclipped Pokeballs from their belts.
"Butterfree, I choose you!" Ash shouted, releasing the Butterfly Pokemon onto the field.
"Geodude, it's time!" Brock mimicked his movement, releasing his Pokemon.
Geodude was a grey boulder-like Pokemon, floating above the battlefield with large, muscular arms that punched at the air threateningly. Ash debated scanning the Geodude with his Pokedex. It would be one more Pokemon logged for Professor Oak, who was surely keeping tabs on their encounters, but he felt like scanning a Pokemon during a gym battle would give him an unfair advantage somehow.
"When I said I hoped you had more Pokemon, I meant something like a Bulbasaur or Squirtle." Brock said stoically. "Geodude, end this quickly with Rock Throw!"
An array of multicolor orbs were created around Geodude as it cried out. The light dyed and turned the orbs into grey rocks that Geodude fired at Butterfree with a few punches of its arms. Butterfree, having been used to training with Pidgeotto, was fast enough to avoid the attack.
"It's fast." Brock noted Ash's Butterfree's speed. "Geodude, Tackle!"
Geodude threw itself through the air at Butterfree as Ash cried out a response.
"You use Tackle too!"
Butterfree did the same, throwing himself at Geodude. They collided handily, but Geodude quickly gained the upper hand by virtue of being made of solid rock. Butterfree was knocked back and fluttered to stay stable flying.
"Use Rock Throw, again!" Brock called.
"Use Gust!" Ash countered urgently.
Butterfree flapped his wings again and kicked up a small cyclone, but it was not enough to hold off the rocks Geodude threw. Ash gasped as Butterfree was struck by the rocks he was attempting to dodge.
"Butterfree! Are you okay?" Ash cried out in worry.
Butterfree shook off the damage as he floated back into the air, letting loose a cry of 'Freeeee' as his wings flapped.
"Use Gust again!" Ash ordered. Butterfree, despite the order not going well last time, flapped his wings and sent out another gust of wind.
"Rock Throw!" Brock went for the same thing as well, but Ash was ready.
"Confusion!" He cried.
Butterfree's red eyes glowed a light blue as he took control of the rocks thrown. Each one was outlined in the same blue light as Butterfree's eyes and thrown back at Geodude, who tried and failed to swat them all away. Brock grunted as his Geodude was forced back.
"Now use Gust!" Ash switched strategies again.
"Use Defense Curl!" Brock countered the command swiftly.
Geodude crossed its arms and braced itself, a light blue flash coating its body and signifying its raised defenses just in time for the Gust attack to make contact. Geodude grunted under the impact but held strong.
"String Shot!" Ash called suddenly.
He smiled as he heard Misty and Brock both let out noises of surprise at the command. They hadn't been expecting him to rely on a move Butterfree had known before he evolved with all the new ones he had learned, but Ash saw the utility of it. Ropes of silk shot out of Butterfree's mouth down at Geodude, who Brock had instructed to dodge, but Ash was ready still.
"Use Gust on the String Shot!" He said proudly, again to the astonishment of both Misty and Brock.
The gust kicked up by Butterfree caught the silk he was spraying out, spreading the thin ropes around the entire battlefield, and making it neigh impossible for Geodude to navigate without getting caught in the silky trap. Soon enough, Geodude was all but tied down in silk.
"Finish it, Butterfree! Use Confusion!" Ash ordered happily.
Butterfree's eyes glowed again and, despite Brock's plea for Geodude to use Rock Throw a final time, Geodude was too restrained. The gym leaders Pokemon was lifted into the air, outlined in blue, before being slammed into the rock wall beside it twice and thrown back into the ground.
It quickly became apparent that Geodude was unable to battle, and Brock recalled it. He gave the Pokeball a long, respectful look before swapping it for another.
"Onix, it's time!" Brock cried, selecting his second Pokemon.
Brock's second Pokemon was Onix, the Rock Snake Pokemon. Ash was, admittedly, intimidated by its height and no doubt strength, with its entire body being made up of large grey boulders. It took up almost Brock's entire half of the battlefield and was taller than all the artificial rock peaks on the field. It let out a roar as it was released, and Ash could feel Butterfree float backwards.
In the stands there were cheers, and Ash's attention wandered for the first time. On the balcony with Misty there was several children, varying in height and age, but they were all heavily focused on the battle and seemed very happy with the Onix's appearance. This must be his ace Pokemon, Ash thought, and they think it's about to wrap this battle up.
Brock's arms were crossed. He thought so too, did he?
"Butterfree, use Gust!" Ash thrust his hand forward.
Butterfree obeyed, sending more gusts of wind out at Onix while Brock stood calmly. It was almost an entire minute before Brock uttered a command.
"Swat it down with your tail, Onix. Then use Screech." Brock said calmly. His head nodded decisively.
Onix's tail was swift, breaking through the small vortex of wind Butterfree had created and struck Butterfree true, hitting it and pinning it to the ground. Onix, while glaring at Butterfree, opened its mouth and let out a noise so shrill it seemed silly coming from Onix's imposing and threatening stone face. The attack clearly unsettled Butterfree, as he started thrashing about under Onix's rock-hard tail.
"Finish it with a Rock Throw." Brock finished. Onix roared, a much deeper sound than the noises it had made a moment ago, and created the same grey boulders that Geodude had and thrust its head forward, launching the rocks in time with its momentum and at Butterfree.
"Use Confusion, keep them away!" Ash replied erratically.
Butterfree's eyes glowed again, and he again took control of the Rock Throw. He aimed them backwards but was not strong enough to launch them far enough back to hit Onix, and he was still pinned under the massive weight of the behemoth rock snake.
"Try a Gust!" Ash was desperate, and Butterfree tried his hardest to flap up a Gust, but his wings were going nowhere fast.
"Rock Throw, again!" Brock's command was nowhere as desperate as Ash's.
Butterfree could not escape in time and was ruthlessly slammed by rocks while Onix pinned him in place. Ash heard the painful noises Butterfree was making and knew he could not continue on.
"Stop, stop it! Butterfree can't battle anymore let him up!" Ash cried out, darting onto the battlefield.
He ignored the looks of everyone around him as he arrived by Butterfree's side just as Brock ordered Onix to release the Butterfly Pokemon. He continued to ignore the looks he got from the hoard of people in the stands as well as Brock as he knelt and rubbed Butterfree's head gingerly.
"You did amazing, Butterfree. I couldn't have asked you for a better battle." Ash said. "I'm sorry I let you get hurt like this."
Butterfree made a noise of what Ash could almost interpret as affirmation, but it was hard to tell as his Pokemon was still masking pain. Ash sighed as he returned Butterfree, promising it a trip to the Pokemon Center soon. He stood up, noticing Pikachu was staring at him too from where they were previously standing. Ash smiled out to his partner.
"Butterfree had to know how proud I was. Otherwise, he might've felt like it was all for nothing." He said, walking back to his side.
"You are a very… unique trainer." Brock commented. "I've never seen someone display that level of concern over a gym battle."
"I'd say thanks but that doesn't feel like a compliment." Ash muttered more to himself than Brock as he knew the rock-type specialist hadn't heard him. "I'm ready to keep going now." He said louder.
"Choose your next, and final, Pokemon. It will be an uphill battle against Onix, so choose wisely." Brock advised.
"Pikachu, are you ready to win this?" Ash turned to the electric-type. Pikachu's cheeks sparked at the same time as Ash's burned in excitement, the yellow mouse jumped onto the field quickly after.
"I thought I told you to choose wisely." Brock mocked them. "Are you sure this is the match-up you want?"
"I've never been so excited in my entire life." Ash replied with a huge smile. It was so genuine that Brock paused, and Ash took his quietness as acceptance. "Use Tail Whip!"
Pikachu quickly spun around, wagging his tail teasingly at Onix. Onix growled and lunged forward, Pikachu was only just able to avoid the attack. Onix went to lunge again, irritated, but Pikachu teased him again with another Tail Whip.
"Onix, use Bind!" Brock interrupted another of Onix's lunges.
Onix paused mid-launch to reconfigure, pulling its head up and tail back to attempt to reach Pikachu with its long tail instead.
"Jump up and use Charm!" Ash ordered. Pikachu jumped up and just barely avoided Onix's tail. He turned to look up at Onix, only to be grabbed from behind.
Pikachu was quickly wrapped up in Onix's tail, unable to move. He wiggled and struggled, but Onix's grip was rock-hard as expected. Brock stood with his arms crossed again, as if disappointed.
"Do you see yet that your Pokemon stand no chance against me and my rock Pokemon?" Brock said confidently.
"All I see is someone so afraid of losing he's trying to get me to forfeit." Ash retorted quickly. "It's not gonna happen. Pikachu, use Charm! You've got Onix right where you want 'em!"
Pikachu stopped struggling. He forced himself to take a small breath as he heard Ash's voice. His human was right, this could be a good position. He opened his eyes, making them rounder than usual and appearing to be as cute as possible under Onix's downward glare.
They were so close he could visibly see the stat-change take effect in Onix's eyes. Now that Onix had lowered attack and defense, Pikachu knew Ash was getting ready to break out their secret weapon.
"Now Pikachu! Use Brick Break!" Ash cried, pumping his fist into the air.
Pikachu, not even being able to move a muscle, could close his eyes and visualize swinging his tail violently and cleaving through stone. It was enough to make his tail glow and that hurt Onix plenty. It forced the Rock Snake Pokemon to loosen its grip on Pikachu and the tiny Pokemon fell straight down.
"Use Brick Break again!" Ash ordered happily. Pikachu darted forward, jumping up and swinging again.
Brock ordered Onix to move, but the snake was too big to pull its entire body out of Pikachu's way that quickly. Pikachu managed to hit close to the start of Onix's tail with the strong fighting-type attack, causing Onix to grimace even worse than before now that there was force behind the attack.
"Use Rock Throw again!" Brock sounded much more urgent now, and Ash couldn't help but feel vindicated.
"Dodge what you can and Brick Break the rest!" Ash countered. "Get closer to Onix!"
Pikachu had been training for this exact scenario for six days. Butterfree using Confusion to launch rocks at him was a perfect mirror of Rock Throw and although Onix was decidedly better at it than Butterfree, Pikachu had gotten to the point where he could break through more rocks than Butterfree had the stamina to throw at him. That was a lot of rocks.
As such both he and Ash were confident as he used Brick Break to break through only three rocks and dodge the rest while making his way up to Onix.
"Use Screech again!"
Onix lowered its head down to the ground to take better aim at Pikachu. It's mouth opened and the shrill noise returned, being shrill enough to stop Pikachu's running in its tracks. He covered his ears in pain. Too loud.
He watched as Onix started to rear his head up.
No! Pikachu thought. That was the golden opportunity, head ducked down and primed for a Brick Break. But through the painful sound of the screech, he could hear Ash's voice clear as day.
"You can do it! Use Brick Break!" Ash was not desperate this time, just excited as he commanded Pikachu forward.
Pikachu's eyes snapped open, and he shot forward with speed like he never had before, leaving a glowing white trail behind him. He reached Onix in next to no time and was upon it, swinging his glowing tail into the side of Onix's face straight to the jaw. Onix's entire body was flung to the side as Onix nearly fell over under the weight of the blow.
Brock gave a noise of acknowledgment.
"It seems I underestimated you." He said simply. "But you won't beat Onix with surprises. Use Tackle!"
Onix shook its head and reared up again before lunging forward at Pikachu. Pikachu, panting from his burst of speed earlier, didn't have the energy to dodge quick enough and was launched backwards with the force of 200kgs of hard rock. It was the first solid hit Onix had landed on Pikachu, and it looked like it was nearly enough to do him in.
But Pikachu pushed back to his feet and glared back harder. Ash felt burning in his cheeks, his body, his soul. They were here to win.
"Use Tail Whip again!"
Pikachu turned, weaker than before but with renewed determination, and wagged his tail. Brock and Onix both did not take kindly to the taunt; Brock quickly ordered another Tackle and Onix was moving before he even finished the command.
"Brick Break, go!" Pikachu sprinted forward again, tail glowing, and leapt up above Onix's head and landed on its skull. "Do it!" Ash's voice came through Onix's sounds of struggling and Pikachu slammed its glowing tail down onto the top of Onix's head.
The force was finally too much for Onix, and its massive body collapsed down onto the ground. Brock's referee had declared Onix unable to battle, making Ash the winner of the challenge. Pikachu was still on Onix's head by the time Ash had made it to the battlefield, just in time to let Pikachu jump down into his arms.
"You were incredible, Pikachu! I'm so proud of you!" Ash said as he hugged him close.
"Pikaa." Pikachu replied tiredly, but he did his best to hug Ash back.
"Cheater!" A new voice cried from the side of the room. "Cheater, cheater!"
Ash turned to see one of Brock's brothers, he assumed, rushing angrily towards the field only to be stopped gently by one of the gym aids.
"There's no way you could've beaten Brock with that Pikachu if you didn't cheat, it's impossible!" He continued to cry out.
"We did not cheat! Pikachu worked really hard to be able to win that battle!" Ash yelled back.
"Real mature, Ash, arguing with an eight-year-old." Misty was beside him again, nudging him with her elbow. Ash shot her a look but had the decency to appear embarrassed about it until he heard Brock approach them.
"No, Ash is right." Brock interjected. "He has every right to defend his actions. If Forrest were not my brother, he would be more careful with his words because they could call the match into contention. He should know better; he is nearly eight-years-old." He shot his brother, Forrest, with a reprimanding look.
"Ash," Brock begun again. "I underestimated you in our battle. But it was not a mistake that cost me the match, as I believe that you would have been able to win even if I came at you with everything I have. You showed me everything I'm supposed to test for here at the Pewter Gym and more, and never have I seen a battle like that. I hope you can forgive my harsh words, a lot of it comes with the territory of being a gym leader."
"No hard feelings, all you did was get us geared up to win!" Ash replied happily. Brock gave a chuckle, and for a moment Ash and Brock made eye contact. "Thanks for a great battle, Brock. We learned a lot."
"I bet you did, didn't you?" Brock said with a smile of his own. "Ash, it's time for me to give you your winnings. Follow me over here."
He led them to the side of the gym, opposite the balcony where Misty had watched their match. There was a table set up with a gym student behind it, and Ash recognized him as the guy who made the lightyears comment earlier. Ash resisted the urge to smirk and instead turned his attention to Brock as he spoke.
"As you know, your reward for beating me is the Boulder Badge of Pewter Gym." Brock picked the small badge out of the students hand, holding it up to Ash. It was just a small, grey octagon, but Ash looked at it with wonder. "It's often the first step in taking the big eight challenge, but by no means is it always the easiest. It means a lot that you won today and giving you the badge effectively ranks you up as a trainer." He handed the badge over to Ash, who held it up between his index and thumb to show Pikachu and Misty.
"With a gym badge, you're now able to read the trainer's job boards. You can decide to take some errands and do some favors for towns if you so choose, a gym badge gives you that authority. The more you have, the more jobs you'll have access to." Brock continued to explain.
Ash knew all this already, having been through plenty of Professor Oak's seminars on Pokemon Trainer's being productive members of society, but he let Brock speak anyway. Pretty much every town had job boards posted that trainers could help them with in exchange for rewards, usually money or items. There was usually no restriction to who they were for, as long as the trainer had enough badges to take the job. Plenty of people didn't mind whether the chores were getting done with help from gym students or trainers passing through the town or even gym leaders themselves.
This went together with Ash, as well as the other Pokedex holders, being on-call for Professor Oak should he decide he needs an errand from them. There was plenty to keep trainers busy and in demand that wasn't battling gyms or climbing into the ranks of the elite four.
"Of course, you also get rewarded a TM, along with prize money." Brock picked up the deep brown CD from the table, inside a clear glass case just like Ash's Brick Break TM. "This is the TM for Rock Throw. Now that you've beaten me, you can use the experience to learn and grow, taking what you saw here with you in the future and making it your own. Your prize money will be automatically deposited into your trainer account."
"Thanks a lot, Brock. I learned a lot from our battle." Ash accepted his second prize.
"I have a favor to ask of you, Ash." Brock said after a moments hesitation. "It's always been my dream to travel the world as well, to learn more about Pokemon. I'd really like to be a Breeder, I think, or Professor. But I have a responsibility to my family and my families gym." Brock gestured around with his hands. "I would appreciate it if you could learn all you can about Pokemon for me and see everything this world has to offer."
Ash and Misty both appeared shocked at his words.
"You're the first person I've met in a long time that I think understands how I feel about Pokemon, because you feel the same way. I know it's a lot to ask, and it might not be fair, but" Brock paused, seeming to hesitate again, but Ash didn't need him to finish.
"I'll do it." he said confidently. "Of course, I will. Y'know, my own dream is to become a Pokemon Master. I don't really know what that means, that's just what all the kids in school used to say. My friends from home and I all think it means different things. I'm not just trying to win the Pokemon League and retire, I want the same thing you do. I want to see everything there is to see and meet every Pokemon I can along the way." Ash replied.
In that moment, Ash felt to everyone else like the tallest person in the room.
"Thank you, Ash. I wish you the best of luck, truly." Brock said, extending his hand.
"Don't thank me yet. Thank me when I achieve both of our goals." Ash shook Brock's hand, and a brotherhood was born.
"Let's get to the Pokemon Center, Ash. It's almost time for lunch." Misty nudged him after a moment. Ash nodded, reluctantly acknowledging it was almost time to leave Pewter City behind. "Would you like to join us, Brock?"
"That would be nice, but I should write up a report and everything for our battle for the League. If I don't get it done soon, I'll never get around to it, my next few days are pretty booked thanks to these guys." Brock gestured to his siblings. "But if you guys are ever in Pewter City again, don't be shy, alright?"
"We won't! We'll see you around Brock!" Ash readily agreed.
Brock watched them go with one final wave, feeling like he just gave up his ticket to the adventure of a lifetime.
Ash and Pikachu were jogging back to their training grounds by the edge of town now, since Ash had remembered he had to go rub his Boulder Badge in that old man's face. Misty had criticized him for it, but he was already running before she could even finish, and she had no choice but to follow him.
"Hey!" Ash was calling as he saw the old man's store come into view.
He was standing, dusting off a couple rocks inside a wooden cabinet until he heard Ash's cry. He turned around and, upon noticing it was Ash, smirked.
"Have you come to grovel at my feet? To ask for my help and advice?" He said sarcastically. "Too bad the great Flint doesn't take anyone under his wing." The man, Flint, threw in.
"Not at all," Ash said as he approached the outdoor shop. Pikachu stopped at his feet, looking almost even more smug than his trainer. "Just came by to show you this!" Ash produced his Boulder Badge from inside his jacket pocket.
Even Misty would admit the look on Flint's face was absolutely priceless.
"That's preposterous! You had to have gone out and caught another Pokemon to help you!" Flint said after sputtering for a few moments. "You can't have beaten Brock with just two flying-types and a Pikachu!"
"He actually beat him with one flying-type and a Pikachu." Misty interjected happily.
"I don't want to believe it, but I guess I've eaten my words. Congratulations, kid." Flint said through a cough. "And I told ya I'd give ya something from my store, didn't I?"
Ash and Pikachu both nodded.
"Do we get to pick?" Ash asked, somewhat intrigued.
"NO!" Flint shouted at him. "I can't afford to let you choose any of the most expensive stones I have in my collection for free, a man's gotta make a living out here still. But I am a man of my word, so I will give you something from my store that could be useful to you even if it's not one of my evolutionary stones."
Flint turned back to the cabinet he had been dusting, bending down to the bottom shelf, and muttering as he reached in. It was a jaggedly cut stone, similar in shape to the Boulder Badge except bigger, able to be comfortably held in the palm of Flint's hand.
"This is a Hard Stone. Not exactly rare, but one of the more useful items I have in stock right now. If you let a Pokemon hold it, it'll boost the power of rock-type moves by about 20%." Flint said, handing it over to Ash. "Should go nicely with that Rock Throw TM you won as well, if you ever catch a Pokemon that can use it."
Ash tucked the stone into his backpack for now. It sunk nicely to the bottom and wasn't much heavier than it looked.
"Thanks a lot for keeping your word. I owe you thanks too, because it was thanks to you that I got so fired up to beat Brock as soon as possible. I know we were fired up, but extra motivation always helps." Ash replied. "Isn't that right, Pikachu?" Pikachu nodded.
"Well, don't get used to it. You kids best be on your way, I've got some things to think about." Flint said somewhat cryptically.
Ash and Misty shared a glance but shrugged and begun their walk back to the Pokemon Center.
