Chapter 4: Cooking Together.
Eddie and Dylan were in the kitchen, ready to look for ingredients.
"All right, Dylan, tomorrow is your mom's birthday, so I want you to help me make her a cake." Eddie said.
"Sure thing, Dad. Just tell me the measurements and what kind of icing." Dylan said.
"Well, first, we need to find flour and sugar." Eddie said before they rummaged through the cabinets, accidentally knocking several things over. Eventually, after knocking them over as well, they found the sugar and flour.
"All right, now we make a vanilla cake." Eddie said
"No way. Let's make a chocolate cake." Dylan said.
"Dylan, you know your mother likes vanilla." Eddie said.
"Yeah, but she also likes chocolate." Dylan said.
"Let's make vanilla." Eddie said.
"Chocolate." Dylan argued.
"Vanilla." Eddie argued.
"Chocolate." Dylan argued.
"Chocolate." Dylan argued.
"Vanilla." Eddie argued.
"Chocolate." Dylan argued.
"Vanilla." Eddie argued.
Then, an idea struck them.
"Why don't we…" Dylan started.
"Do both?" Eddie suggested.
"Half-chocolate, half-vanilla." Dylan said.
"Sounds good." Eddie said.
With that, they started preparing the batter. Dylan eagerly cracked eggs into the mixing bowl while Eddie had to struggle to keep the shells out.
"Dylan, careful how you crack those eggs. Shell pieces are falling in left and right." Eddie said.
"So what? An egg's an egg." Dylan said.
"Yeah, but all those eggshells won't be appetizing." Eddie said before a cloud of flour dust kicked up. Dylan had missed pouring it in.
"Nor will that much flour." Eddie said.
"I got it." Dylan said before he tried several more times, spilling flour everywhere before he finally got the flour poured in the bowl.
"All right, now we mix it." Eddie said before he started the electric mixer. The mixing went well until the mixer ended up sending batter onto Dylan's face.
"Sorry, Dylan." Eddie said, scratching the back of his head.
Dylan wiped the batter off before he got a mischievous smirk.
"Food fight!" Dylan yelled before flicking batter at Eddie, which he retaliated with, starting a food fight.
Eventually, they got the batter into the cake pan and put it into the oven, accidentally spilling some on the door.
As the cake baked, Dylan looked at Eddie and asked, "Dad, how long is it supposed to bake for?".
Eddie's eyes widened, "I forgot to set the timer!" he said before he facepalmed, "Crap, gonna be tasty." he muttered sarcastically.
"Should we let it bake for 10 minutes?" Dylan asked.
"Too short. We need to bake it for 17 minutes." Eddie said.
"What about 20?" Dylan asked.
This debate went on for a while before they eventually decided to check the cake. It looked done, but smelled slightly burnt.
"Should we try baking it again, Dad?" Dylan asked.
"No. It's not burnt, so it should be fine." Eddie said before he set it on the counter.
After it cooled, Eddie put the vanilla icing on while Dylan tried to put on some chocolate icing. But, he squeezed the tube too hard, which caused the icing to go everywhere. Eddie squeezed the vanilla too hard as well, which caused the icing to go everywhere.
Later, after icing the cake, Dylan got carried away with the sprinkles, which resulted in the cake and the floor being covered in sprinkles.
The next day, Anne woke up to Eddie and Dylan presenting the cake to her.
"Happy Birthday!" they said.
"Oh, what a wonderful cake!" Anne said.
"Me and Dad made it ourselves, Mom!" Dylan said.
"Though not without a few mishaps." Eddie said.
"Oh, thank you both!" Anne said as the three of them group-hugged and laughed.
