After Luz and Amity had been left alone, the puppet hadn't immediately gone to talk to her girlfriend; on the contrary, she had given her ten minutes to calm down her boiling spirits. During that time she had filled two more glasses with beer, and then brought them to her and sat down next to her. Amity had taken hers and then, after a short toast, they had both taken another sip... very small to avoid feeling their throats tingle. Only then did Luz ask her: "Are you okay?"

Amity let out a sigh. "Now yes... but I'm still a little tense"

Luz could see it for herself: her girlfriend's body was definitely more tense than normal. "Amity... I understand that this isn't a good situation for you... you don't have to be ashamed to talk to me about it"

Amity rested her head on her shoulder. She suddenly seemed to have lost all her energy. "I don't know why I got so angry… I don't even know why I keep feeling so angry" she confessed. "I made it clear to that man that he is dead to me. I should be indifferent to him, he shouldn't have any effect on me... and yet... when I see him I can't help but get furious..."

"Amity, it's normal. That's still your father" Luz told her.

"But it shouldn't be like this!" Amity blurted out, standing up abruptly and spinning around in circles. "He abandoned me, he let my mother used me. I should forget about them forever, it would be the right thing to do. But then why do I keep feeling this pain in my chest when I think about them? Why do I really wish things hadn't happened this way?"

Luz also stood up and hugged her girlfriend from behind. She could feel Amity's body shaking under her hands. "Continue" she whispered to her. "Throw it all out"

Amity's body shaking intensified. "I hate them! I hate them both! And I'm so angry!" she screamed. "As a child I saw all my peers who had fathers who came to pick them up from school, and I would have loved for mine to come and get me, but he was never there! I heard about those united families who ate dinner together and laughed and they joked and daughters sat on their fathers' laps while he cradled them, and I wanted to have that love too! That was what he should have been for me, not... abandon me! And my mother... she should be here now! She was supposed to be the loving and kind mother who pushed me to do better and taught me how to be a good witch! But look at me now! I have this enormous power in my hands, and I haven't the faintest idea how to use it! I'm afraid that I might hurt someone, and I have no one to guide me or even suggest what to do! There is Lilith, but how can a fairy teach me how to use dark magic well? My mother should have been here, she should have rejoiced when I became a white witch, not use me to summon a monster! She was supposed to teach me how to fly on a broomstick, but now I have to practice Ghost on my own! We had to do magic together, fly into the sunset together, have fun making rain clouds appear above Edric and Emira! These were the parents I wish I had! A witch mother who taught me magic and an inventor father who taught me mechanics, both who loved me and who had no secrets at least for me! So why weren't they that kind of parents? Why did they have to hurt me so much? I just became the most powerful witch in the world, this would be the moment I need their support the most, and instead I can't appeal to either of them because they're both pieces of shit!"

Amity was talking so fast that she was starting to get out of breath, and almost without meaning to, she kicked the chair hard, resulting in her hurting herself. Luz was a little taken aback by that reaction and hurried to put the chair back, but Amity, without stopping, threw two more on the floor. "They should have helped me! They should have supported me! They should have been here! But instead they're not here, and I don't know what to do with my life! I'm no longer human, I'm no longer even a normal witch, and I know that no matter what I'll do, I will never be like the others again! I will always be different, an anomaly among anomalies, and I haven't the faintest idea what the hell I have to do! And they are not here!". Amity's hair fluttered. "THEY ALWAYS LEFT ME ALONE!"

A vortex of dark magic exploded from inside her and hit the entire bar, messing everything up; Luz also rolled on the ground. Amity noticed that and her eyes widened, realizing what she had just done; she abandoned her witch form and ran to her girlfriend: "Luz, are you okay? Oh, I'm so sorry...!"

"Don't worry, Amity, I'm okay" the puppet quickly told her, getting up immediately.

But this wasn't enough to calm Amity, in whose eyes tears began to form: "There, you see!? I have no control over this thing! All it takes is for me to be really upset to hurt you, and I don't know how to handle it!"

"Amity!" Luz tried to stop her.

Amity put her hands in her hair. "Sooner or later I'm going to really hurt someone, or worse! This damned essence that I now have in my chest and I can't get out of it only creates problems for me! My mother only created problems for me, my father only created problems for me! And now, I am alone having to solve those problems that they caused me...!"

"AMITY!" Luz repeated in a much louder voice, placing her hands on her shoulders to pin her in place.

Amity finally shut up; the puppet's authoritative tone had had a blocking effect on her. For a moment, she lost herself in Luz's kind, determined eyes, those beautiful eyes that she loved so much. "Amity... I wish I could tell you that everything will work out for the best, but we both know that would be a lie. This is not a children's story, where the hero returns home after defeating the evil wizard and lives happily ever after. The reality is that the hardest part of every adventure are the scars you have after said adventure" Luz told her with a bit of sadness in her voice. "I don't know what tomorrow holds, no one can know. But... we will face it, together. Whatever person you become, whatever mistakes you make, any problem, everything... we will face it. Step by step, we will move forward, and we will find both our place in the world"

"What if I'll do something bad?" Amity asked her in a small voice.

Luz smiled at her. "You already did that. And we solved it"

"Something stupid, then" Amity said again.

"You already did that too. Multiple times. And we solved them" Luz reminded her, without losing her smile. "And if you hadn't done those mistakes... maybe you wouldn't be the person you are now... and I wouldn't call you my wonderful girlfriend. The experiences we had made us the people we are today... and I couldn't be happier, because thanks to this I can be here in front of you wanting to shower those beautiful lips of yours with kisses"

A small smile finally formed on Amity's face. "Luz... you're wonderful. Don't ever change"

"Of course not!" Luz said with a laugh. "Come on, Amity, after all we promised each other: we will grow old together. Therefore, don't be afraid to do even the biggest stupid thing you can imagine, because then we will solve it and move on! A promise is a promise, and it must be kept!"

At that point Amity didn't hold back either and burst out laughing. She grabbed Luz and hugged her tightly; seriously, how did she manage to make someone so wonderful in every way her girlfriend? The two exchanged a kiss, and then they separated and looked at each other; Luz could see that Amity was definitely more relaxed now. "It's nice to see you smile again"

Amity's expression softened even more, but she still said: "Thanks, Luz, but now... I think you should go find King"

Luz nodded feeling very guilty. Even though she thought King was exaggerating, she was downright rude to him. If Eda had been present, she would have scolded her and she would have had every reason to. "Yeah... I have to apologize to him. Do you think he's still on the island?"

"If they came on the airship, they'll already be gone" Amity told her. She paused for a moment, then she added: "We'll go home tomorrow. You'll talk to each other there"

Luz looked at her in surprise. "Really? Do you want to come back?" she asked, remembering how she had reacted earlier with Alador.

Amity shrugged. "I don't like the idea of leaving this place, it's wonderful, but... I think I've been distracted enough. I need to go home and face my problems, not run from them" she said. "We will come back here another time"

Luz nodded. She was happy with that choice: it had seemed for a while now that Amity was staying in the amusement park more to escape from her problems than to have fun. Making the mature choice to return home was the best course of action. "Let's tidy up in here, then let's go tell the others"

"I'll take care of it" Amity said, and with a quick wave of her hand the objects in the room all flew to where they were placed before she knocked them to the floor during her rant.

"Mph. Being a witch also saves you time for household chores, hm? That isn't fair!" Luz protested with a laugh.

Amity shrugged. "I can use magic to be lazy, so why shouldn't I? Come on, I bet Eda does this too"

"Eda doesn't do housework regardless" Luz replied, remembering the messy state the Owl House was in. At that point she noticed that the glasses she had prepared were also back on the table. "Hey, there's still some beer. One last sip before we go back to the others?"

"Good idea. It's really good after all" Amity replied drinking from her glass. Too bad that while she was doing it, her ears suddenly lengthened until they became at least half a meter long and became covered with brown fuzz that was very reminiscent of the natural color of her hair.

Luz froze as soon as she saw this. The glass in her hand nearly exploded. "Luz, are you okay?" Amity asked her seeing that sudden reaction.

The puppet opened and closed her eyes a couple of times, and she looked at her glass; after which she placed it on the table. "I think... I overdid it a bit for my first time drinking. I'd better stop here"

"Are you sure that's all it is? You're pale" Amity asked again.

Luz swallowed. She was having a hallucination… yes, she was definitely having a hallucination. "Don't worry, everything's fine... just... I better sit down for a moment" she said, taking one of the chairs and sitting on it. She put her hands on her legs to force them to stop shaking.

Amity cocked her head to the side, sure that her girlfriend was acting far too strangely. "Okay... but if there's something wrong, tell me right away, okay?" she told her, and then she took the glasses and put them back in their places; but while she was doing it, a long tail emerged from under her skirt, ending in a tuft of hair the same color as those on her ears.

Luz froze again when she saw this. She rubbed her eyes several times, yet she continued to see it. That couldn't be a hallucination! Seeing her act like that Amity seriously began to worry. "Luz, seriously, what's happen?"

"A-A-Amity… can you d-do me a f-favor?" the puppet asked her with a trembling voice.

"Of course! Anything!" Amity answered her immediately.

"C-Can you p-please… touch your e-e-ears?" Luz asked her, and the color on her face diminished with each word.

"Huh? Of course I can, but why..." Amity froze when her hand brushed against her right ear. Her eyes widened and whatever she was about to say died in her throat. Slowly she touched both ears, feeling them in several places up to the top, and her face became the same color as a sheet. "Luz… is there something wrong… with my ears…?"

The puppet nodded shakily, and then she pointed to her tail: "Y-You also have a..."

Amity looked down and noticed the tail; at that point she could no longer hold back and let out a scream. "What's happening to me!?" she exclaimed, and she ran towards the first reflecting surface she found (the glass of one of the glasses), and as soon as she saw herself she jumped back. "What... what's happening to me!? Why do I have donkey ears and a tail!?"

She quickly conjured a magic to shrink the size of his ears, but she was horrified to discover that no matter how much she used it, the ears remained unchanged. "What... why!?" she screamed. "How is it possible that my magic isn't enough to bring me back to the way I was before!? I have the power of a supreme being inside me! How can... ARGH!"

Amity realized with horror that a strange force was balling her hands into fists; she tried to resist it, but her fingers didn't obey her and closed, and then merged with her palm until they turned into hooves. She tried to scream, but immediately closed her mouth when the braying of a donkey emerged from it. "L-Luz!"

The puppet was almost as terrified as she was. "Amity... what's wrong with you!?"

"Help me! I can't stand up straight anymore!" Amity screamed desperately with tears in her eyes, an instant before falling to the ground. She could no longer get back on her feet, only to stand on all fours; it was as if her very bones had just changed position. Her face changed and lengthened into a snout, and every remaining part of her body became covered in brown hair. In the end, instead of the girl, a beautiful donkey with a brown coat appeared, with lavender mane and hair on her head and Amity's clothes on her.

"A-Amity! Oh, my...!" Luz exclaimed taking the donkey's face in her hands. "But... but how is this possible? What magic is this? Why can't even you counter it!?"

Amity's eyes widened even more. "Luz!"

"What?" the puppet asked her, who was now completely panicking.

Amity let out a bray. "You too! Your ears!"

Luz raised her hands and touched her head, and realized that her ears had also transformed into those of a donkey, although they were still hard and rigid like those of a wooden toy. "No! No, no, no! Please!" she screamed in fear and involuntarily took a step back, and she tripped over her own tail which had sprung up between her legs. She tried desperately to tear off her ears and tail, but even her hands soon turned into hooves, her face elongated and became a snout, and her body filled with stiff down the same color as her hair, until that in her place there wasn't a donkey made of wood with the same pixie cut and her same clothes.

The two girls were terrified like few times in their lives. "What...what happened to us!?" Amity exclaimed in fear, barely managing to avoid braying.

"I don't know! Oh, King was right!" Luz replied, but she wasn't making any effort to avoid braying like a real donkey. "We should have listened to him and left! I should have known this was one of those too-good-to-be-true situations! What..."

Suddenly there was a noise like a snake slithering across a damp surface. The two girls fell silent and looked at the chandelier, which was made up of a long handle and two blue globes that gave off a soft light; and the aforementioned globes had now changed position and were aimed at them... and inside them was a strange pupil-like dot, which was moving as if it was actually looking at them. "Are those… eyes?" Luz murmured as she backed away in fear.

The chandelier fell apart, revealing itself to be composed of two intertwined tentacles ending in eyes. They climbed up and stuck to the ceiling, and it changed and a large mouth appeared beneath them, curling into a smile so terryfing that would have made even Grometheus's skin crawl. "Well done, girls... you brayed really well"

The ceiling unraveled and broke, turning into dozens of tentacles that moved towards Luz and Amity with the clear intent of grabbing them.

In the original book, Pinocchio turns into a donkey after five months in Toyland, while in this AU only five days pass. Furthermore, the transformation in the original book is much slower, lasting several hours, whereas here it happens very quickly, just like it happens in the Disney cartoon
