Interlude I
Route Collusion
"I know a way for you to break the engagement."
"…"
"…"
"…Why should I even believe you?"
"Do you have any other choice? Because if you're waiting for Yukinoshita-san to be honest with you about how to break it, then you've been losing your touch while I was gone."
"…"
"…"
"…Why do you even care? I know you're not doing this for me."
"…Tell me, Hikigaya. Are you in love with Yukino?"
"What does that have to do with—"
"Yukino might hate me for this, but I refuse to let her get chained to someone who won't even love her back. I won't let her happiness be put in jeopardy for someone who isn't even sure about how he feels."
"You…"
"So, I'm asking you, can you look at me in the eyes and tell me that you love Yukino?"
"…"
"That's why."
When he woke up on Monday, he hadn't been in the best of moods.
Between still feeling overwhelmed with everything that was happening, combined with Hayama's visit barely two days ago which had left him with a lot to think about, he had been in a rather sour state in the morning.
'That sounds like the worst plot idea ever. It's just going to be a bunch of girls bickering while the most boring protagonists laugh it off and try to maintain the shitty status quo. Stop recommending me crap like this, Zaimokuza, I swear.'
Which is why he might have been a bit too… mean spirited when the first thing he had gotten in the morning was a text from Zaimokuza, explaining this amazing novel he had found about some guy getting sent to a fantasy world and who just also happened to have a party full of female members.
He hadn't needed to read more to know where that was going, so he had answered Zaimokuza accordingly.
He was regretting it by now, though. There was no need to lash out at him like that, that much he knew, especially when he had read stuff that sounded arguably worse.
But by the time he had tried to apologize to Zaimokuza, right as he was about to leave the house with Komachi in tow, another message from him arrived first.
From: Zaimokuza_GOD
"It seems you still haven't learned anything, Hikigaya Hachiman."
Why did he insist on sounding like an old-school villain? He could only sigh, deciding that he would just apologize later if he was going to act like this so early in the morning.
He received another message right after, though, this one actually making him glare at his phone.
From: Zaimokuza_GOD
"You sound so high and mighty. I can only wonder how you would act in a situation like that."
There was no need to wonder because this wasn't one of his crappy novels. Life didn't work like that, as much as Zaimokuza would like it, so he could only snort in response.
If he thought he would get a raise out of him, then he was sorely mistaken.
So he simply pocketed his phone, a sigh leaving his lips as he prepared himself mentally for Yukinoshita to be waiting for him right outside.
"Good morning, Hikigaya-kun. Do you mind explaining this?
And well, he hadn't been wrong in that regard.
However…
"Why do you have these two waiting for you, Hikkio?! Explain!"
"Watch it, blondie, but yeah what's going on here, Hikigaya?"
It seems Miura and Kawasaki had just decided to drop by first thing in the morning as well.
And as he received three different sets of glares with varying degrees of anger in them, he could only wonder what kind of entity he must have pissed off for this to be the start of his week.
Extremely short chapter, of course, but this is supposed to be a bridge between the first part and the upcoming second part.
Keeping the "routes" away from one another, so to speak, has been fun, but now it's time they start messing with one another. A constant shuraba, if you will, can't avoid those.
More details about the conversation with Hayama will be shown in due time. I'm leaving it vague on purpose for now.
And now, a 2 weeks time skip because why not.
I'm glad to see yandere Yui was quite well-liked. Out of all the routes, Yui and Yukino's were the first ones I figured out. Yukino's was easy as fiancée stuff is a classic trope, and with Yui, well, I just found the concept of the airhead being the actual functional sociopath to be funny, and it let me try and keep Yui in character on the outside.
I know on the inside I'm prety much making her super OOC, which I tried to avoid with the rest, and my only excuse for that is that writting a yandere is fun.
I saw a surprising amount of Tobe fans. It can't be an old romcom without MC having one way too upbeat guy friend.
Once again, thank you all for reading this far and for the follows, favs, and reviews! The last chapter is now the chapter with the most reviews of the fic so glad to see Yandere Yui got you all excited.
