Chapter 15

Erwin sits at the head of the dimly lit meeting room, flanked by Pyxis and Zachary. The air is heavy with anticipation as they gather around a polished wooden table. Pyxis, his grizzled face etched with curiosity, leans forward and asks, "So, Erwin, what's the purpose of this gathering?"

With deliberate movements, Erwin places three weathered books on the table, their covers worn from age and use. He meets Pyxis' gaze squarely and begins, "Upon our return from the recent expedition, our path led us back to Wall Maria. Despite the loss of soldiers from the 104th Corps, we noticed a significant decrease in Titan encounters compared to our earlier expeditions. Inside a secluded house, we stumbled upon these." He gestures towards the books, his tone tinged with intrigue and urgency.

Zachary reaches for one of the books, tracing his fingers over the title engraved in faded gold letters. "The Life of Grisha Yeager," he murmurs, his voice carrying a note of recognition. "I recall whispers of this man—a doctor who traversed in and out of the walls."

Pyxis flips through another book, his eyes scanning the pages filled with revelations about the world beyond the Walls and the enigmatic Titans. "Information of the World beyond the Walls," he muses aloud. "The extent of Titan knowledge... Who exactly is Grisha Yeager, and what compelled him to pen such detailed accounts?"

Erwin leans forward, his expression grave yet resolute. "These books were meticulously hidden in a basement, shielded from Titan assaults. Reading through them has confirmed my father's long-held theories," he explains, his voice steady with conviction. "Grisha Yeager may have passed, a fact Commander Shadis confirmed, but his legacy and the secrets he unraveled live on within these pages."

Zachary's brow furrows in contemplation. "If Grisha Yeager possessed the knowledge we seek, why go to such lengths to conceal it?" he questions, his voice filled with intrigue.

Erwin's gaze turns inward for a moment before he begins, "To understand why, let me share a tale about my father."

The scene transitions to Erwin's childhood, where his father, a teacher, stands before a classroom filled with eager faces. "My father was an educator," Erwin narrates, his voice carrying a hint of nostalgia. "During one of our history lessons, we learned about humanity's retreat behind the walls, ushering in a century of peace away from the Titans."

In a flashback, Erwin's father is seen holding a book and chalk, explaining the history to his students. "This act of retreat erased much of our past, leaving us with a sanitized version of history," Erwin continues, the memory vivid in his mind.

A young Erwin raises his hand, his eyes betraying a thirst for knowledge. "But I harbored doubts," Erwin admits. "I questioned my father about the discrepancies in our history, seeking answers that weren't in our textbooks."

The scene shifts to nighttime, with Erwin and his father alone in their home. "After school that day, my father finally shared the truth with me," Erwin recounts, his voice tinged with sadness. "He revealed that the government's history books were riddled with contradictions and secrets deliberately hidden from us."

A montage shows Erwin absorbing his father's revelations, his young mind grappling with newfound knowledge. "My father's revelations astounded me, but he cautioned me against sharing the truth indiscriminately," Erwin adds, the weight of his father's words evident in his tone.

Young Erwin is then shown interacting with classmates, passionately sharing his father's insights. "I couldn't contain my excitement and shared my father's story with others," Erwin admits, a hint of regret coloring his voice.

The scene transitions to Erwin standing solemnly before his father's grave. "That decision cost my father dearly," Erwin says, his voice heavy with emotion. "He never returned home one fateful day, falling victim to a supposed accident in a distant town. But I knew the truth—the government silenced him for daring to expose their lies."

"One hundred and seven years ago," Erwin continues, his voice tinged with bitterness, "humanity sought refuge behind these walls. However, my father believed that their memories were tampered with by the King to facilitate easy control."

Pyxis leans forward, his eyes narrowing with interest. "So, altering their memories made governing within the walls more feasible?" he questions, seeking clarification.

Erwin nods solemnly. "Exactly. The King's manipulation of memories was crucial for maintaining the semblance of civilization within our confined world," he explains.

Pyxis ponders this for a moment before speaking again. "But if they hadn't resorted to such drastic measures, do you think civilization within the walls could have thrived?"

Erwin's gaze hardens as he responds, "Yes, I believe so. From a young age, I've questioned why my father had to pay the ultimate price merely for seeking the truth. Even those in power believe they are acting in humanity's best interest. Yet, I've come to understand their true motives."

His voice takes on a tone of disillusionment. "They aren't protecting humanity but their own comforts— their gardens, houses, and lands," Erwin asserts, his words heavy with conviction. "Anyone who dares challenge their authority is swiftly dealt with, no matter who they are. My father's death was a result of human greed and my own naivety. Over time, his theory transformed from a mere hypothesis into an undeniable truth etched in my heart."

Zachary's eyes widen in realization. "So that's why you've kept the Military Police out of this," he deduces, his voice tinged with a mix of understanding and concern. "They've been aware of this information all along and are quick to silence those who dare to uncover it. It seems the government's priorities lie elsewhere, far from the well-being of humanity. What course of action do you propose, Erwin?"

Erwin meets Zachary's gaze with unwavering determination. "Having delved into the truths hidden within these books, I believe there is a path forward," he declares, his voice firm and resolute.

After their return to the Coordinate Village, Eren and Historia gather their comrades to outline their plan. Eren projects a digital map onto the screen, highlighting their intended route. "As we follow this path," he begins, his voice steady, "the King's anti-personnel squad will undoubtedly try to abduct us and eliminate most of our group. It's a risk we cannot afford to take."

His words hang heavy in the air, tension palpable among their 104th friends. Eren continues, his tone resolute, "Therefore, Historia and I will proceed alone. The rest of you will wait at the Reiss Chapel." He gestures to a point on the map. "We'll confront the King in the government, so you all must be prepared to handle the soldiers. They are intent on our destruction, and our survival hinges on our willingness to fight back, even if it means taking lives."

The gravity of Eren's words sinks in, and a sense of horror washes over their comrades. Eren notices their reaction but remains steadfast. "Armin," he addresses his friend, acknowledging his moral compass, "you and your group will serve as backup. I understand your hesitations about resorting to extreme measures."

Armin, with a furrowed brow, speaks up, "But shouldn't we try to negotiate first? Violence should be a last resort."

Eren's expression hardens, his gaze unwavering. "We've tried negotiation before," he replies, his voice tinged with frustration. "But as history has shown, talking alone doesn't suffice. If it were that simple, my father wouldn't have had to resort to extreme measures, including sacrificing the lives of the Reiss family, to pass on the power of the Founding Titan to Historia."

Historia's voice cuts through the tension, her tone resolute. "Negotiation requires mutual willingness," she states firmly. "If only one side is open to it, the efforts are futile."

As Eren and Historia set their plan in motion, they don their hoods and stealthily make their way toward Capital Mitras. The city's gates loom before them, guarded by members of the Military Police. One of the guards steps forward, eyeing them suspiciously. "Identify yourselves," he demands, his tone commanding.

Eren and Historia remain silent, their eyes glinting with an otherworldly intensity. Without a word spoken, a subtle aura of power emanates from them, causing the guard to gasp in astonishment. Suddenly, as if under a spell, the Military Police guard at the gate is overcome, his eyes glazed over as he relinquishes control, allowing Eren and Historia to pass through unhindered.

Inside the opulent chambers of the royal government, a tense atmosphere hangs thick as Rod Reiss, a man of authority and influence, sits at the head of a polished mahogany table. Surrounding him are key figures from the government, their expressions a mix of concern and determination.

"We cannot afford to underestimate the threat posed by these Titans," Rod Reiss declares, his voice carrying a weight of urgency. "Their sudden appearance and intervention in Trost have disrupted our plans and exposed vulnerabilities we cannot ignore."

One of the government officials speaks up, his voice laced with apprehension. "But sir, how do we proceed? We still don't have a clear understanding of the identities of these Titans. They operate outside our control, making them unpredictable."

Rod's eyes narrow as he considers their predicament. "Indeed, that is a challenge we must address," he acknowledges. "However, we must not forget the ultimate goal—retrieving the power of the Founding Titan."

Another official chimes in, voicing a concern shared by many. "But without knowing the identities of these Titans, how do we approach the situation? And what of Historia? She possesses royal blood, a crucial element in our plans."

Rod's gaze hardens, his resolve unwavering. "Historia's role remains paramount," he asserts. "If we cannot control these rogue Titans, then we must turn to other means. Historia must consume the current possessor of the Founding Titan's power to ensure it returns to our grasp."

As the discussion continues, deliberations intensify, strategies debated, and uncertainties loom large. Suddenly, the doors burst open, and Eren and Historia rush into the chamber, their presence disrupting the carefully laid plans of the royal government.

The official's voice rings with authority as he demands answers, "Identify yourselves! How did you bypass the Military Police guarding the perimeter?"

Without hesitation, Historia steps forward and removes her hood, revealing her identity to the stunned assembly. Rod Reiss, her father, gasps in disbelief. "Historia!" he exclaims, his shock evident in his voice and expression.

"Hello, father," Historia greets him calmly, her tone tinged with a hint of irony. "As for how we passed through the Military Police, let's just say they were quite cooperative. Manipulating them with the power of the Founding Titan proved to be remarkably simple, wouldn't you agree?"

Rod's initial shock gives way to a mixture of disbelief and desperation as he processes Historia's revelation. "The power of the Founding?" he gasps, his eyes widening in realization. Without hesitation, he rushes towards Historia, arms outstretched in an attempt to embrace her, his emotions running high.

However, Historia's response is swift and decisive. With a calm yet resolute expression, she deflects his attempt to embrace her and sends him crashing to the ground with a forceful shove. "If you believe you can manipulate me," she retorts, her voice tinged with determination, "then you are sorely mistaken."

Rod scrambles to his feet, his expression a mixture of anger and defiance. "I am not here for you," he asserts, his voice carrying a tone of authority. "My purpose is to save the population within the walls. I see through your machinations and those of your cohorts. Your plans spell the downfall of our kind, and I will not stand idly by and allow it to happen."

The revelation and subsequent confrontation between Rod Reiss and Historia send shockwaves through the assembled members of the royal government. Gasps of shock and horror fill the air, their expressions a mixture of disbelief and apprehension.

The sudden turn of events catches them completely off guard. They had anticipated a straightforward meeting, focused on strategizing and consolidating power, but the unexpected clash between father and daughter brings a new level of tension to the room.
