Chapter 5: Lost
It was dark, the only thing that held light was the glow from my Etwahl. I crossed my arms holding my arms tight for warmth. It was chilly out, I would need to find shelter soon. I cursed myself for falling asleep earlier. But I had thought that he'd come back, he was so adamant on keeping me with him as his prisoner.
Would he kill me for leaving the spot? I shook my head from that thought. I didn't care, I was free now. A part of me wanted to go into that village, seek shelter there. But I couldn't. It would have been too easy for him, that was the test. But surely me leaving would mean I passed, right? My feet were beginning to hurt from the amount of walking I had done. It has been a long time since I walked like this. Usually I rode with people, or took a boat somewhere. But this time it was like how I escaped from Demacia. In the woods alone just me and my thoughts. I inwardly giggled, how the similarities were apparent. I was running away after being hunted. I decided to stray off the path to a different one. If someone found me I'd be able to use them for help. Maybe they would be able to take me away from these woods to somewhere safer. I lifted my head up, it was light but I could hear it. The sound of horse steps, I felt my heart skip a beat. They were coming my way, and it was more than one at least. I squinted into the dark, I couldn't see much except for the glow of lanterns in the distance.
It sounded like a group of men, as the group got closer I waved my arms around to get their attention. It was a group of four horsemen, all wearing black cloaks. They slowed to a stop upon noticing me. The horses circled around me.
"Well well well. What's a girl like you doing in these woods by herself?" The voice came from behind me. I turned to see the man, his face was hidden mostly in the hood of his cloak. But his horse was grayish with white socked hooves. There was a sword that hung along the side of his hip. I raised my hands to try and sign hoping they'd be able to understand.
"I'm lost and need your help to find a safe place to reside." The man started laughing after I finished.
"Sorry missy but I don't know sign." He chuckled more.
"So she can't speak?" The horseman next to him spoke up. Which made the man laugh again.
"Yeah, it seems so." He hopped off his horse and walked closer to me. I could see more of his features under his hood as he lifted his lantern up. His eyes were cold, although I couldn't make out his eye color. He was tan with a small beard. He eyed me up and down before smirking.
"She's a pretty little thing." He clicked his tongue, making my heart drop. "Somethings not right.." I took a step away from him. Which made him grin more.
"Beautiful and quiet. She'd make us a pretty coin." He finished, the other men started hollering, moving closer to ward off my escape.
"Her little toy looks fancy too." A man spoke behind me, I turned my head to the voice.
"Look at her eyes, you're spooking her." The first man laughed before grabbing my arm. I tried to resist but his hold was strong.
"Rodney get the rope and blind fold." He ordered, he turned to me pulling me into him. I could feel his breath on my face. I closed my eyes and turned my head away.
"Aw, don't be like that. I love women who play hard to get." He whispered in my ear, as I felt his other hand on my hips. "Think. Think. Think." My mind was racing, yet I was frozen still. It was like my body had shut down. Unable to respond to me. I felt the wind blow through us, it was cold but yet different. Like it was hollow.
"You best let her go." A voice growled, I opened my eyes to see him behind my captor. "Kayn…" My eyes widened, he came back. His eyes were cold and bore into the man's back. His horse reared seeing Kayn and darted away. The man quickly grabbed me and turned with him. He held me in front of him and drew a knife.
"Her? Is she important to you? I don't care if she's alive. So if you value her life I suggest you just turn around and get going." He held the knife up to my neck. The blade felt cold and rough, if I moved it would cut into me. I looked at Kayn who looked from him then to me. His eyes were still cold.
"I don't care about her either. But she's already been claimed by me." The other men had surrounded Kayn, each drawing their weapons at him. He looked around, then back at the man. He let out his usual smirk at the man. Crossing his arms shaking his head.
"So she IS of importance to you then." The man continued. Which made Kayn shake his head.
"No, it's just that she's mine. And I'm not about to be disrespected by a bunch of no life losers. So I'll ask again nicely. Hand her over." This time it was the man who laughed at Kayn.
"No I don't think so." He pressed the knife into me more. I could feel it pierce into my skin lightly. It stung but it wasn't deep. Kayn's face hardened. His playful demeanor changed.
"Kill him." The area turned silent. Kayn's eyes were on mine for a moment, unreadable. The men closed in on him, all eyeing him.
"I want you to look at him, as he dies for you." The man spoke in my ear, moving the knife up to my cheek. I turned my eyes to see the blade. Just as quickly as I looked I heard a loud blood gargled scream. I turned my eyes back to Kayn. He held one of the men by their neck. Tossing him aside before piercing him through the chest with his scythe. Behind him was another body.
"What the hell." The man holding me whispered. Kayn turned his attention to the third man who was holding an axe. The man lifted it up, but before he could even lower his axe for a strike. Kayn had disappeared and reappeared from the shadows behind the man. Holding his scythe up he struck the man in the head. The man's body immediately went limp, dropping the axe. Kayn shook the scythe, the body fell to the ground with a loud thump.
"Kayn.. his power… It's dark…" I could feel the scythe's lust for more. Or was it him?
"W-who the hell are you?" The man yelled backed away. Kayn turned his attention to the man and looked at me again. His red eye glowed brighter.
"It doesn't matter. Now are you going to give me the girl?" He asked calmly. I could feel the man shaking, he lowered his knife back to my neck.
"T-to hell, you're a d-demon aren't you?! I'll kill her. Yes she's the reason you're here so I'll kill her to get rid of you!" He manically laughed. "Kayn!" I called out in my mind, desperately wanting to get away from him. I felt the blade go deeper. I closed my eyes and tried to escape from my captor's hold. I felt the pressure of the knife lifted. The wind blew through me, sending a chill down my spine. I squirmed free and turned to look. The man's body laid on the ground. His head was decapitated and rolled to the side of him. I looked up to see Kayn glaring at the man.
"You're so annoying." He spat at the man's body and walked to me and grabbed my arm. He started dragging me away before pausing.
"Call your weapon." I looked up at him, he didn't even look at me, I looked back at my Ewtahl that laid on the ground. It flowed before floating up and levitating towards me.
"Come on, we're going to be late." He growled before picking me up. I turned back to the road that was now littered with dead bodies. Soon the black shadows enveloped us and we moved through the woods at an alarming pace. I held onto Kayn. I watched as we went through various trees and bushes. Until he slowed to a stop. It was fully dark out, but I could hear water running. A stream? He carried me to another small opening. It was a small stream that led into a lake. The moon illuminated the area slightly, it was beautiful. The moon reflecting on the water. But why here? I looked back up to Kayn, was he going to abandon me here this time? He walked to an area where the moon shined the brightest and and let me down.
"Sit." He demanded, and I lowered myself onto my knees. He sat too in front of me. Lifting my head up to inspect my neck. He let go of my face and took a piece of my dress and ripped a piece of the end off. He took it and gently lifted my head up with his corrupted hand to expose my neck again. With the other he lightly wiped at my neck with the piece of my dress he had ripped off.
"Looks like I won't have to wrap your neck with anything. It's just a light cut so you'll live." He mumbled, still inspecting my neck. He let go of my head and I looked at him. I smiled at him and touched his hand to show thanks. Yet he moved his hand and crossed his arms.
"You could have handled them on your own, no?" He questioned.
"Or are you that weak that I'll have to rescue you from everything now?" He sneered more. I just blinked at him. Maybe a one on one situation, but all four of those men? I mean maybe, I did thwart a group of Mageseekers before… I looked away towards the lake. Surely I'm not weak. So why did I freeze back there? I felt his hand grab my face and turned my head to look at him. I furrowed my eyebrows, and moved his hand away with my hand.
"Aw, did I offend you?" He teased more with his usual smirk played on his face. I looked away from him and shook my head. "Would he save me again?" I watched the waves inched closer to us, it was silent besides the sound of the water. Leaving was certainly out of the question for now.
"I mean what I said yesterday." I looked back at Kayn, his gaze had followed mine out towards the lake.
"I'll train you." He turned to look at me. His eyes slightly glowed. I let out a sigh and nodded. Mostly because I was exhausted from wandering around the woods all evening. I looked down at my hands, feeling the soft cool dirt mush between my fingers. Besides I would be able to prove to him that I am a capable person to fend for myself. I'd just have to play along just a little bit. I looked up to see Kayn preoccupied with water again.
"I wonder what he's thinking." I grabbed his arm, he quickly turned and glared at me.
"Don't touch me, we are not friends." He growled. I nodded and motioned with my hands that I wanted to sleep. Clasping my hands together and putting my head on top to act as a pillow. I closed my eyes and started to move my mouth as if I was snoring. I heard him chuckle, I opened one of my eyes at him. He shook his head at me.
"No. You're not allowed to sleep." His smirk grew. I stared at him, "What do you mean no?" He laughed while tilting his head.
"I'm just kidding, you can sleep. But not here, come." He got up and dusted himself off before looking at me. I did the same, patting my dress to get some of the dirt off.
"My dress is so filthy, I'll have to try and clean it sometime." I grimaced as I noticed the tear that Kayn had made. I would also need to bathe. I turned to look at Kayn. His eyes were on me analyzing my movements. I knew using sign language was out of the question. So I motioned to him. Mimicking myself lathering soap on my arms. His brows furrowed watching me. "Does he understand?" I sighed as he didn't say anything. I looked to the water, holding my arm with my other hand. Even if he did there was no soap to cleanse myself with. I could hear him shuffle closer to me, I could still feel his eyes on me.
"Let's go." He spoke through the silence. I turned to look back at him, he quickly wrapped his arm around my waist. With ease he lifted me up and jumped up into the air. The tendrils of dark shadows quickly followed us, enveloping us once more.
~xXx~
