With the plan in place, and after getting directions to the center from a guy who was selling rocks, Gary made his way to the Pokèmon Center. Upon getting there, he found his driver and the cheerleaders there waiting in the parking lot. He ran over to meet them, and let them know of how much progress he has made so far.
The driver, showing some pride in Gary, had informed the boy that he did a bit of research of his own, and learned that the first two Pallet Town trainers had their battles already with the gym leader, and had just left. The gym leader's Pokèmon are being treated at the moment, and the driver suspects that they won't be ready to battle until tomorrow.
Nodding at this bit of info, Gary smiled and thanked the driver for letting him know. This info will definitely have him change his plans a bit.
"I'm glad I could be of service to you, Master Gary. Shall we wait for you to complete your battle tomorrow, and be off to the next gym?" the driver asked.
"Nah. I have an idea of what I want to do, and I don't want the girls here to distract me," the boy whispered to the driver, so that the cheerleaders didn't overhear. "Besides, I know what gym will come after this one. Once I am done here, I'll be making my way to Cerulean City. They have a gym there. So, if you could-"
"Say no more, Master Gary. I understand. We will be awaiting your arrival in Cerulean City. Good luck to you and your Pokémon in your first gym battle," the driver cut in.
Gary smiled and nodded his thanks to the driver. He then turned and walked towards the entrance to the center. Hearing the cheerleaders cheering him on, until the car started up, and left the parking lot.
That evening
The sun was about to set, and Gary was outside, in the back of the center, training with his Pokémon, after he had called his gramps to make a few swaps of Pokèmon. Standing in front of the 6 mons, he spoke to them.
"Alright guys. I've learned from my driver that this gym uses 2 Pokémon in battle. And since the gym here specializes in rock types, we'll tackle this gym with the types advantage," he said, pointing at two of the Pokèmon in question. "I'll be using you two in this battle. However, that doesn't mean that I'll be slacking off with the rest of you. We'll all be training until night time. Hopefully, you all will get some gains from this, and then we'll call it a night."
The Pokémon all gave calls of agreement, before they started running around the battlefield, as Gary had instructed them to do. Physical exercises would be the first thing they all do before going into actual attacks on each other, and then strategizing a battle plan of attack. They continued with this routine until it was around curfew time, and Gary called it quits for the night. Gary and his Pokèmon walked back into the center, to be healed, get some food, and head to a room he rented out to the night.
The next morning
After a good night's sleep, Gary was once again awakened by his early-riser Mankey. Only this time, he was rolled out of bed, and on the floor.
"Gah! Mankey! Why'd you do that to me!?" he shouted, and looked at his cheerful fighting type with an annoyed, but sleepy expression. Sighing and scratching his head, he managed to stand to his feet. "I get the feeling this is going to be an everyday thing with you."
Ignoring the happy expression from his Pokémon, Gary stretched, and walked towards the washroom. 'How did he even get out of his Pokèball?' he thought to himself.
Some time later, and after he fed himself and his Pokèmon, he left the center, and walked to the gym. With the two Pokémon he had in mind, and a plan of attack he believed would get him the victory, he walked with confidence towards the gym.
Once Gary reached the Pewter City Gym, he couldn't help but let his smile falter at seeing the building from the outside. The place looked like a boulder on top of a doorway surrounded by steel beams. It had the word PEWTER GYM engraved on the left top corner of it.
"So, this is the Pewter Gym? Seems rather bland… but I didn't come here for the scenery," Gary muttered.
He didn't waste any time, and stepped into the gym. A boy, much older than him, stood at the back of the gym. The battlefield's terrain was filled with dirt and rocks scattered about. A good place for rock types to have some field advantage.
'Ok, I didn't take that into account. Well, now I'll commit that to memory for future gym matches,' Gary thought, after scanning the field. Then turned his gaze to the boy, who looked to be 15 or so, on the other side of the field.
"Hello there. I am Brock, the Pewter city Gym Leader! Are you a challenger?"
"I'm Gary Oak from Pallet Town, and yes! I challenge you for your gym's badge!" Gary's confidence shone through.
"Very well. Is this your first gym battle?" Brock asked. When he got a nod from Gary, he continued. "As the Pewter Gym Leader, I am also tasked with telling newcomers that Gym Battles are a bit different from ordinary trainer battles. That this will be a Pokèmon Official Battle, officiated by the Pokémon League Gym Leader. There are special rules that differ from gym to gym. This will be a two on two gym battle. Only the challenger is allowed substitutions. The winner will be declared, when one side's Pokèmon are all knocked out. If you succeed in winning, this Boulder Badge will be yours," Brock stated, and held out a badge that looked like a gray octagon.
Gary smirked, and nodded. "Alright then. My first gym battle towards entering the league. Awesome. Let's do this!" holds out a Pokèball.
Brock puts the badge back in his pocket, and brings out a Pokèball as well.
Both stared at each other a moment, then as one, the two had sent out their first pokèmon!
Oddish vs Geodude
Gary sent out his little plant Mon against Brock's rock with arms. "Oddish use absorb!"
Oddish shook its leaves, absorbing the energy from geodude; it had done immense damage to the rock and ground type, just as Gary thought it would.
To Brock's shock, Geodude had fainted from one attack. "Geodude!"
"Great job, Oddish, return!" Gary called back his Pokemon.
"Geodude, return," Brock returned his fallen Pokémon, and spoke to its ball, "Don't worry. We were caught off guard. Get some rest." He then looked back to Gary in thought. 'Another one from Pallet Town. That's the 3rd trainer. So, I can suspect he has the final starter Pokèmon, if the last two trainers are anything to go by. Which means, I can't take him likely.'
With his hand on his ball, he sent out his signature Pokèmon, Onix. Gary, in response, too sent out his 2nd Pokemon, Squirtle.
"Show them your rock hard determination Onix!" Brock called out.
"That rock hard determination is going to be sunk once we're done!" Gary responded.
Squirtle vs Onix
The tiny turtle looked up to Onix, unafraid of the size difference between them. All that mattered was the pure determination showing on his face.
"Onix, use rock throw!"
"Squirtle, use withdraw!"
Squirtle tucks itself into its shell making it tougher to withstand the attack from its opponent. This giant rock snake drops a rock on the hidden turtle, which just shatters over his shell.
"Now that is done, Squirtle, hit them with a water gun!"
The blast of water hit the rock snake causing it to come crashing down like a pile of rocks giving the challenger another 1-Hit KO! Before anything else could be done, Squirtle began glowing in a bright light. Growing taller and gaining extra features, becoming a Wartortle!
"War war wartortle!" he cried out in triumph.
Gary pulls out his pokèdex and it speaks about Wartortle before putting the dex away again. "Well, Wartortle, you did amazing, now return. Get some rest."
After returning his defeated Onix to its ball, the gym leader stepped down onto the terrain. Approaching Gary, he reached into his pocket, and handed over the prize. "You did great, Gary Oak, from Pallet Town. You are just as skilled as the two Pallet Town trainers that challenged me yesterday. You and your Pokèmon will go a long way, and I hope you make it to the Pokèmon League. Now, as proof of your victory here today, I present to you your prize. The Boulder Badge."
The boy nodded his thanks, and accepted the badge. After his short inspection of the badge, smiling at his accomplishment, he stored it in a badge case he had gotten from this city's Nurse Joy.
"Thanks Brock. Well, I'm off!" Gary said, and left the gym.
After getting his Pokèmon treated at the center, it was near noon when he left Pewter city, and made his way towards his next destination. Walking on the path that he would take to pass through Mt Moon. With a look of nothing but confidence, he made his way to Cerulean City.
