Chapter 27:

Chicago: Taking Care of Business

Saturday morning Burbank, enroute to Chicago

The ride to the airport is nice, relaxed. Visiting their beach has always been calming for Sarah. She remembers the many times she would go there alone when her feelings for Chuck would overwhelm her. She sighs as she plays with the radio looking for songs she likes. Chuck sings along, whether he knows the words or not. She can't help but laugh at some of the lyrics he comes up with. She also can't help but look at him and feel love.

Sarah watches his hair moving chaotically in the wind thinking, that so suits him, moving freely. Going where the wind takes him, but firmly rooted in what's right. Sarah, you are one lucky woman.

Her thoughts are interrupted when he sings nasally, "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, with five hundred children and crops in the field."

Sarah laughs loud and long, "Five hundred children huh? Well don't get your hopes up mister, ninety-nine is my limit."

They laugh together as Chuck pulls the car into the CI hanger. He parks against the wall opposite the 2008 Bombardier Challenger 605. Sarah gets out and whistles, "Sweet ride. This is ours?" Chuck puts the top up and locks the car up.

Chuck laughs, "Yep, all ours as long as we keep making the lease payments. Think you could fly it?"

Sarah gets excited, "Really, I can fly it?"

Chuck laughs as he pulls the luggage and packages out of the trunk, "I hope so, it cost the company a small fortune to add you to the insurance."

Sarah moves over to help Chuck, a man in a pilot's uniform walks over. "Good morning, Sir, it's nice to see you again. And who is this incredibly attractive lady?" He bows and lifts Sarah's hand to kiss her knuckles.

Chuck grabs his travel bag and starts to walk towards the aircraft, "Easy Murdock, that's my fiancée you're leering at. Sarah Walker, that's H.M. Murdock our pilot, soon to be our former pilot."

Murdock stands up and takes the luggage and packages Chuck set on the ground, "Oops! Sorry Ms. Walker, I didn't know you were claimed."

Sarah laughs, "Claimed? Do you think treating a partner like a piece of meat is going to save your job?"

Murdock says "Partner? Yeesh, Mr. B. you have got to warn me about these land mines. I'm not at my best this early in the morning. It's a good thing you have to get to Chicago. I guess my job is safe for now."

Chuck laughs as he stops at the plane's door, "Not as safe as you think H.M. We can both fly this craft. Now why don't you stow the luggage and packages on board and stop trying to get both of your feet into your mouth at the same time."

Sarah steps in front of him and climbs the small steps into the cabin, knowing that Murdock is watching her short skirted behind. Coyly she tells him, "Careful what you do with that luggage Murdock, it belongs to your boss." Sarah enters the cabin and looks around. The cabin is large, it could easily hold twelve passengers comfortably. The seats are luxurious, covered in tan leather, the couches plush, one of them pulled out and made up for sleeping two. A small well-equipped bar, LED TV screens in various places, a larger one at the front of the cabin. The air smells fresh, there's a slight scent of disinfectant. Sarah strolls forward, touching the chairs as she moves towards the cockpit.

She speaks over her shoulder, "Captain, please just put the bag on the couch there, stow the packages in a closet. I want to take a look at your controls." Sarah bends her head and enters the cockpit.

Murdock whistles, "Damn Mr. B., there is no doubt in my mind that you're going to die young. But man, what a way to go."

Chuck laughs, "Murdock, you need to get a grip, I can't have you talking to women like that. Ms. Walker can handle herself. But if you act like that with a client, I'll have to fire you, on the spot. If you have to use the head, now would be the time. Once you walk into that cockpit, you are not to come out until we land in Chicago. Ms. Walker and I will be napping, I don't want to be disturbed. Understood?"

Murdock does a mocking salute, "Yes Sir, "napping," understood Sir."

He heads towards the cockpit as Sarah emerges. "Nice craft Murdock, if you want to keep flying it, get that mouth under control." She smiles sweetly, lowering her voice she whispers, "If you come out of that cockpit during this flight, I'll cut your balls off, and feed them to you." As sweetly as possible and with a big smile, "Okay?"

Murdock gulps, "Yes Ma'am, absolutely okay. Yes Ma'am, my apologies Ma'am. No offense intended." He walks into the cockpit and closes the door.

Chuck has taken a seat in one of the lounge chairs, Sarah sits in the one across the aisle from him. They feel a jolt as the aircraft is pushed out of the hangar. She looks across at Chuck, "Let me guess, he's one of your rescues."

Chuck nods, "He's former army, claims he can fly anything with or without wings. His record is impressive, and bears witness to that. However, he saw too many things a man shouldn't see. You handled him nicely. Thank you."

The speaker comes alive, "This is your captain speaking, we've been cleared and are presently being moved onto the apron in preparation for takeoff. Please engage your seatbelts. Weather reports promise a smooth flight, leaving L.A. at 0600 hours, and arriving in Chicago at approximately noon local time. We'll be cruising at roughly forty thousand feet. I'm afraid there is no beverage service on this flight. However, feel free to help yourself to the bar and get as plastered as you like." Chuck and Sarah laugh.

"Once we reach cruising altitude, unless there's an emergency, you won't hear my voice again until we land. The Boss is tired and wants to take a nappy-poo. We know you have your choice of airlines. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for flying Carmichael. I hope you have a pleasant flight."

Chuck and Sarah look at each other and laugh. The engines come alive and the plane rumbles as it rolls to the head of the runway. Soon the whine of the engines grows louder, and the plane begins to move down the concrete. Sarah watches out the window as the buildings surrounding the airfield move past her window faster and faster. The plane lifts and there is a mild pressure pressing them into their seats.

Sarah and Chuck occupy themselves looking out the small portholes watching as the buildings below grow smaller and smaller, then disappearing under the clouds. Minutes pass, they hear Murdock's voice again, "Lady and Gentleman, we have reached our cruising altitude of forty-one thousand feet. All commercial aircraft will be flying well below us. Have a good flight."

Sarah leans over the arm of her chair, "Chuck, can I ask you a big favor?"

Chuck smiles, "Baby, you know, if it's within my power, anything you want."

Sarah acts shy, "Sweetheart when I was little, I would watch all those old movies, with my grandma. I know it's weird, but I always wanted to be a stewardess. Please don't laugh at me, will you help me fulfill that fantasy. May I serve you Sir?"

Chuck shrugs, "A stewardess, I never would have guessed. Why? "

Sarah gets pensive, "They were so glamourous and sexy, and they got to travel all over the world. They would meet interesting people and talk about so many things. They had lots of friends. When they would come home, their families would be glad to see them."

Chuck looks at her, "Sweetheart, that sounds a lot like your old job."

Sarah shakes her head, "Some of it sure, but they didn't have to do the things I did. They had friends." She sighs, "You gave me friends. Before you, all I had were marks and colleagues. They made people comfortable and happy, not dead and missing. I finally have a family that will be glad to see me when I come home. Please Baby."

Chuck smiles, "Sure Sweetheart, if it'll make you happy. What would you like me to do?"

Sarah squeals, "Wheee this is going to be so much fun. You just sit right there looking out the window, act like a bored businessman." Sarah stands up and straightens her skirt. "Good morning, Sir, I want to welcome you aboard flight one, bound for Chicago. Our flight today offers a special inflight service, tailored to your needs. Can I start you off with a cocktail?"

Chuck waves his hand at her, "Don't be ridiculous it's six o'clock in the morning, what kind of man do you take me for? Just some ice water will be fine."

Sarah smiles, "Of course Sir. I'll just be a moment. Would you like a pillow or magazine while you wait, or perhaps a blanket."

Chuck hams it up, acting grumpy and annoyed, "No, no, just the water."

"Very good Sir, I'll have your water to you shortly." Sarah is in the back of the cabin for a few minutes. She returns and hands him a glass of water over his right shoulder, his eyes still on the window. "Are you sure there's nothing else I can get you Sir?" She steps around in front of him as Chuck takes a sip from his glass, "Perhaps, some coffee, tea, or me?"

Chuck turns at the strange question and water goes flying everywhere as he spits into the air. His eyes popping out of his head as he takes in his naked wife standing in front of him. She's wearing a pair of black sheer stockings held up by a lacy garter belt. They accentuate her long well-toned legs ending at the bottom in black four-inch spiked heels. The only other thing she has on is a towel draped over her arm. Sarah is shocked, "Oh my Sir, you've made quite the mess."

She goes about using the towel to wipe the water off the leather chair in front of Chuck. "Oh Sir, you've gotten your pants all wet." She kneels and gently wipes the front of his trousers. "Gee Sir, I'm sorry I'll never get you dry this way. I'll have to remove your pants and hang them up." As Chuck watches stunned, she unbuckles his belt and pulls his slacks down. Sarah stares at Chuck's lap, "Sir, I don't know what you think is going to happen here. We are not that kind of airline." Sarah reaches up and with a look of lust she moves her hand up and down. As she lowers her head, "Well maybe just this once."

Chuck can barely make out her words, over his groans. When sometime later she mumbles, "Sir, please don't report me for making that mess, I promise, I'm going to clean it all up."

Chuck and Sarah are awakened by the pilot's voice, "Wakey, wakey, we're beginning our descent into Chicago and should be on the ground in less than half an hour."

Sarah snuggles into Chuck, "Sir, I hope you won't report me to the airline, I tried so hard to get things straight between us."

Chuck laughs, "Well maybe we can work something out on the return flight."

Sarah acts like a dumb blonde, "Oh I would like that, Sir."

Chuck laughs, "I don't know what you did with Sarah Walker, but I'm never going to let Sarah Bartowski go."

Sarah kisses his chest, "That Sir, is a wise choice, because I would hate to have to handcuff myself to you. That could make going to the restroom very uncomfortable."

As they dress in preparation for landing, "Congratulations Boris, You're now a member of a prestigious club. I'm only glad you and my husband could work things out and meet in the middle."

Chuck smiles, "Tanks very much, Stewardess, I am very much enjoyed my inflight meal. Very tasty, but also very much noisy. But Boris is ashamed."

Sarah looks at him, "Ashamed?"

Chuck nods his head, "Yes Boris," mamushka, his mother, tell him always, 'Boris, don't play with food. Food is for eat, not for play.'" You tink is okay, Boris eat first, then play?"

Sarah throws her head back and laughs, "Boris stop, you're embarrassing me. Yes, it was fine that you ate first, I think your mamushka would be proud."

Chuck smiles, showing lots of teeth, "You call Boris mamushka? Tell her Boris did good?"

Sarah laughs, "No Boris, I think we'll keep this to ourselves. I mean after all; you are a Russian espionage agent. You do need to keep some secrets."

Chuck takes her in his arms and waggles his eyebrows at her, "Baby, how about you leave those stockings on, under your skirt?"

Sarah looks at him shocked, "Charles Irving Bartowski, I can't believe how much fun I'm having, well… having fun. But I will not dress like a whore to go see your sister and her family. I'm wearing a business suit to the office, then to the Awesomes. I can leave the stockings on under my slacks. Baby, I appreciate you so much. Your idea of one step at a time is helping, but I'm still scared."

Chuck holds her close, "I know Sarah, and I'm right here, always. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. They finish dressing. Chuck walks Sarah to her seat and buckles her in. He gets down on one knee and looks up into her eyes. "Sarah, I want you to listen to me closely. I'm so proud of you. You're incredibly brave. I didn't realize it at the time. I didn't understand how brave you were when you came to me on the ship. I'm not trying to talk you into anything. You're my wife. I'll support you in anything you need or want."

Chuck takes a deep breath, "We have all the time we need. We'll make our families whole, and we will start our family. I have no doubt. I wouldn't even think of rushing you into anything. For right now, all I want you to consider is what you want for brunch. It's weird, I feel like I ate my way across the country, but somehow, I'm still hungry. I also have this weird craving for borscht."

Sarah laughs lightly and takes his face in her hands. She kisses him on his forehead, then his nose and finally the lips. She sighs, "I'm a very lucky woman, thank you for loving me, Chuck."

Murdock's voice comes over the loudspeaker. "We'll be touching down shortly, please return to your seats and fasten your seat belt. We were able to make good time and it's presently 11:32 A.M. Chicago time. The weather is pleasant with a small chance for a light rain this afternoon. I've received confirmation that your car and driver are waiting for you. They'll be there when we pull into the hangar. Please remain seated until the pilot has opened the exit door. I want to thank both of you for flying with us today. I especially want to thank Ms. Walker for not cutting my balls off. Have a pleasant day."

Chuck looks at Sarah who's laughing hysterically, "What the hell did that mean?"

Sarah is laughing so hard she can't speak. All she can do is shake her head. Gasping for air, "Baby, you make my life so interesting. I merely suggested to our pilot that he not leave the cockpit. I didn't want to be caught violating airline regulations." She goes back to laughing, this time Chuck joins her. There's a small bump as the planes' wheels touch down.

The plane idles to the hangar and when the engines shut down, Murdock opens the cockpit door. "Permission to enter the cabin Ma'am?"

Sarah starts laughing again, "Permission granted, thank you for your good flying and consideration."

Murdock quickly moves towards the tail end and opens the door dropping the small steps. He picks up the one piece of luggage, the various packages and exits the plane. He carries the items over to the Towne car and places them in the trunk of the waiting car, then waits. Chuck, carrying his travel case, climbs down noting the activity in the airport. The smell of jet fuel and the loud jet engines reminds him that he is in a big, and very crowded city. He waits at the bottom of the steps and offers his hand to help Sarah down. She takes it and joins him on the ground. Sarah holds Chuck's arm and leans her head on his shoulder as they walk to the car.

When they get to the car Chuck offers his hand to the driver, "Chuck Bartowski, Carmichael Industries, this is my partner, Sarah Walker." The driver shakes his hand, then Sarah's. "Jeffrey Kozlowski Sir, I'll be your driver this weekend. The flowers and wine you ordered are in the back seat. The package that arrived is in the trunk. Forgive my impertinence Sir, but Bartowski sounds Polish."

Chuck nods, "I'm told that's my heritage, my father um… passed away before I got the family history."

The driver opens the rear door, "Well Sir, I guess that makes us cousins of a sort. My mother was a child when my grandparents immigrated here from Poland, to escape the Nazi's."

Sarah smiles, "I'm glad your family made it out safe. You know someplace where we could get some good Polish home cooking?"

Kozlowski nods, "Well Ma'am, if it's okay with you, I know a restaurant with the best, Zrazy, Kluski Slaskie, Golabki, and Pierogi you've ever tasted. It's called the Staropolska Restaurant."

Chuck raises an eyebrow, "Really, the best we've ever tasted, that's pretty high praise, you sure you want to make that guarantee?"

The driver shows a broad smile, "Well, Sir do I look undernourished? It's my parents' restaurant. My mom does all the cooking personally, it's also on the way to your office."

Sarah climbs in the car, "Well let's go. My mouth is screaming for those cabbage rolls. I haven't had a decent Zrazy since I was in Gdansk."

Chuck turns to Murdock, "Thanks for the good flight H.M.. We plan to leave here tomorrow evening around eight. However, if something comes up, we may have to leave sooner. I have your cell number. I'll update you as soon as I know what's happening so you can file our flight plan. Get some food and rest."

Murdock snaps to and salutes dramatically, "Okay Boss. I'll be sleeping on the plane. I'll have all the maintenance checks done and she'll be gassed up and ready to go, ASAP."

Chuck smiles, "Good man, remember, you're on Per Diem, eat well." Chuck climbs into the car still holding on to his travel case." Once in the car, Chuck opens his case reaches in and turns on the signal jammer. He closes the case and puts it on the floor in front of them. Then he sits back and puts his arm around Sarah.

She leans into Chuck, "Wow Baby, I didn't know how hungry I was until Jeffrey started talking about all that yummy food."

Chuck kisses the top of her head, "I'm pretty hungry myself. Sounds like you'll be able to order for us."

Sarah purrs, "Mmmm, I love Polish food, I think I must have been Polish in another life."

"Sarah are you sure you're ready to give up all that world travel, different countries, different cultures, the food?"

Sarah shakes her head, "Who says I'm giving that up? I'm married to a handsome, millionaire with an international business. The only thing I'm giving up is being alone. Baby, while you're teaching our children about our American culture, I'll be teaching them about the world cultures. In the summer when school's out, we can travel and show them firsthand how marvelous the world is. I'm so excited, to share the sights, the smells, the languages. Chuck, our kids are going to be amazing. The best part is we'll be learning right along with them, we'll be a family.

You know in our previous profession; we really didn't get to see much. Like I told you on that train to Switzerland, my passport is full of stamps, but I never really saw the countries I was visiting. Wow! That train ride seems so long ago. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Charles, honeymooners from Texas." Sarah lets out a huge sigh, "It may seem silly, but for me that was our first mission as real partners. We planned together, played the marks together, and fought together, just us."

Chuck nods and puts his arm around Sarah's shoulder pulling her in close. "Yeah, I was terrified that Beckman would tear us apart when we told her about us. You do know there was no way I would have let that happen. The only one who can take you away from me, is you."

Sarah snuggles in, "I know Baby, I swear to you, that will never happen again, never."

Chuck kisses the top of her head, "I'm sorry Hon, I didn't say that to remind you of the past. I said that to remind you of how much I love you."

Sarah pats his arm, "I know Baby. It's okay, no harm done."

The car stops and moments later Jeffrey opens the door, "Here we are folks, Polish heaven in Chicago. Come on, I'll introduce you to my folks."

Chuck and Sarah climb out and walk into the restaurant. Chuck's travel case in hand. Jeffrey heads towards the back and yells into the kitchen, "Momma, come on out. There's someone I want you to meet."

A woman comes out wiping her hands on her apron, "Jeffrey, I'm trying to work here, I have to make dozens of pierogi."

Jeffery waves his hand, "Momma, look a landsman, his name is Bartowski, he's my boss for the day. This is his partner, Sarah. She's been to Gdansk"

The woman offers her hand to Chuck, "Bartowski, a good Polish name, welcome to my restaurant."

She turns to Sarah and offers her hand. Sarah says in Polish, "Mrs. Kozlowski, a pleasure to meet you. Your son has been raving about your food. I'm dying to try it."

Mrs. Kozlowski, throws her hands up, (responding in Polish) "A nice Polish girl." She puts her arms around Sarah and kisses both her cheeks. "Such a pretty girl, you know my Jeffrey is single."

Sarah laughs, (still Polish), "He is a very nice man," she puts her hand on Chuck's arm, "But so is my husband."

Mrs. Kozlowski, hits Jeffery, (in English) "Ach, stupid boy, you told me partner, that's his wife."

Jeffery makes like it hurt him, "Ow, Momma, are you trying to fix me up again. These are my employers. He turns to Chuck, when I was little, they spoke Polish so I wouldn't know what they were saying. Now she's angry at me because I never learned the language. Momma they didn't come for romance with me, they came to fall in love with your food."

She walks around them into the restaurant, "Good, good. Come I'll make you a special lunch, come sit." She walks them to a table covered in white linen, then returns to the kitchen.

Jeffrey walks over to the table and waits until they sit, "My Poppa will be out soon, he's the waiter. I'll be in the car when you're ready to go."

Chuck waves at an empty chair across from him, "Don't be silly, sit down, join us for lunch."

Jeffrey is taken aback, "Sir?"

Sarah waves at the chair as well, "Sit down, relax. We can eat together. After all we were almost engaged."

Chuck looks at her, "Excuse me!"

Sarah laughs, "Just a little confusion across languages. His mother tried to fix me up with Jeffrey."

Chuck looks shocked, "I see, should I be worried? I brought my gun."

Jeffrey starts to stammer, "No… no Sir, it was all a misunderstanding. You didn't tell me she was your wife, and I told Momma she was your partner and…"

Sarah laughs, "Jeffery sit down, he's messing with you. He doesn't have a gun."

Chuck laughs, "Sorry, it was too rich to pass up. But now I owe you lunch, sit."

Jeffrey's father comes out and is introduced. He smiles, "Welcome to our little bit of Poland. Jeffrey's Momma has instructed me not to take an order. She's preparing your food. I will bring it out shortly. While you wait may I suggest some Żubrówka. It is Poland's finest from Bialystok.

Sarah moans, "OOOOHHH Chuck, Żubrówka, is the best Polish drink in the world. It's also called Bison Grass Vodka. There's a blade of bison grass in every bottle. It's like the worm in Mexican Tequila. Yes, please I would love some."

Jeffrey looks up, "None for me Poppa, I'm driving." He nods and moves off to get the drinks.

Sarah's phone chimes, She pulls it out of her purse, "Walker."

"Hi Sarah, it's Gretchen."

"Hey, nice to hear from you."

"It's good to hear your voice too, Sarah."

"How's everything going?"

"Surprisingly well. They're the nicest people. I don't know how, but they've forgiven me my sins. I'm even getting along with Johnny."

"I'm glad to hear that, they are great folks, aren't they?"

"Sarah, you were right about those boys, pure magic. They give the best hugs."

Sarah laughs, "I'm happy for you, and jealous as hell. We're eating lunch in this fantastic Polish restaurant." (Sarah switches to Polish) Our driver is really cute, I want to fix him up with you."

Gretchen responds in Polish, "Yeah, exactly what I need right now, another complication. Is he into black and blue women?"

Sarah laughs hard and switches back to English, "Aw, poor baby do you have boo boos?"

Gretchen growls, "Very funny Walker. Speaking of which is your fiancée there? I'd like to speak to him."

Sarah extends the phone to Chuck. He points to himself, "For me?"

Sarah nods and hands him the phone. "Bartowski."

Gretchen speaks softly, "Chuck, I wanted to let you know I'm doing okay. Your family is wonderful and taking such good care of me. Alex has been cooking so nicely for me. Your nephews miss you a lot." There's a pause. "I also wanted to thank you. You gave me exactly what I needed. In the gym and here. I won't let you down. I can't thank you enough."

"Gretchen, I'm so sorry, I did that to you. I'll do my best to make it up to you."

Chuck sits quietly, the phone to his ear. He looks at Sarah. she can see the sadness in his eyes.

"Chuck, stop it. I'm the one who owes here. I'm fine. I paid a very small price for an incredible opportunity. I wanted you to know everything is good here. I'm healing quite nicely. We're all getting along great, and I love your nephews. I'm looking forward to spending time with you and Sarah. Safe travels, thank you again."

He hands the phone back to Sarah.

"Sarah, you look after him. You're right, he is the best thing that ever happened to you, and maybe me. Have a safe trip, see you soon."

Sarah smiles, "Thanks Gretchen, I will, I'll keep my eye on him. Feel better. See you soon."

Sarah puts the phone back in her purse. "Let's eat."

Returning to their delicious meal of Polish delicacies, the conversation leads to the purpose of the couples visit to Chicago. Jeffrey fills his mouth with some stuffed cabbage. In between bites, "I may be biased, but my momma is the best cook in the world."

Sarah laughs, "You have every right to believe that. You were speaking the truth. This food is heaven."

Chuck leans back, "Totally yummy, my first Polish meal, definitely not my last."

Jeffrey smiles, "I thank you for my parents, If Momma weren't so busy in the kitchen, she would thank you herself. So, Mr. Bartowski, you say you're in cyber security, is that like computers and stuff?"

Poppa returns to the table and brings two drinks. Jeffrey explains, "This is Krupnik. It's a favorite drink in Poland. Krupnik is based on a non-flavored spirit, typically vodka. A fruit brandy, enriched with honey. It's very nice to finish a good Polish meal."

Chuck smiles, "First of all, unless we're with clients, the names are Chuck and Sarah. As to your question, yes, our company does computer work, primarily security."

Jeffrey leans in, "Sir, I mean Chuck, is your company expensive? My folks have been trying to get a website going, but right now the money flow makes it hard to hire people. We're hoping that if we get a good website, we could increase the patronage. You can see the lunch crowd has been light. If the folks don't get profitable soon, they may have to shut down."

Sarah reaches over and takes Chuck's hand, "Hon, can't we help them? It would be a shame not to let other people have a chance to eat this lovely food."

Chuck looks at Sarah and shakes his head, "Jeffrey, never marry a beautiful woman. Seems no matter how hard I try I can't say no to her." Sarah smiles. "Tell you what, this is way outside our usual work, but it's simple stuff. Here's my offer. Honestly, you can't afford my company. I'll have one of my techs set up your website for you. It can be done remotely. Here comes the bill, this lunch, and a verbal contract for a ten percent discount for the employees in my local office. I also have family in the area, they get the discount as well."

Jeffrey reaches over and offers Chuck his hand, "That sir is a great deal, considering Momma wasn't going to charge you anyway. I'm going to sweeten the deal for you though. A free meal for the two of you, whenever you're in town." Chuck and Sarah laugh, as Chuck shakes the offered hand.

Chuck stands and helps Sarah out of her chair, "I could sit here all day, eat and chat, but we have to get to the office."

Jeffrey stands and walks to the back of the restaurant. He yells into the kitchen, "Momma they have to go."

Jeffrey's mother walks out, he whispers something to her. She nods and walks over offering her hand to Chuck, "You're a good man Mr. Bartowski, a good Polish man."

Chuck blushes, "Thank you Mrs. Kozlowski, but you're the one who deserves praise, your food is beyond words. Delicious, scrumptious, magnificent, yummy, no word is enough, and the name is Chuck."

She slaps his arm, "Feh, you flatter me too much, and for you two, the name is Momma."

She turns and hugs Sarah, (in Polish) "Any chance you have a sister for my Jeffrey?"

Sarah laughs, (in Polish) "I have two sisters, both married. But I have a friend who's absolutely beautiful, like a model. Not Polish but she speaks the language. Maybe next visit we'll bring her. Don't tell Chuck he might not like me matchmaking."

Mrs. Kozlowski laughs, "They never do. They think we fall from the sky."

Sarah laughs, hugging her, "Sometimes Momma, we do."

Chuck interrupts, "Did I hear my name?"

Sarah looks at her and smiles, "I was just telling Momma, how lucky I was to find you."

Chuck waves his finger, "She's lying Momma, I'm the lucky one. Hon, we really need to get going."

Sarah turns to Chuck, and takes a deep breath, "To the office, right?"

Chuck smiles, "To the office." They walk out the door and climb in the car. Chuck rolls the partition down. "Tell me Jeffrey, have you ever been in trouble with the police?"

Jeffrey talks over his shoulder as he drives, "Sir, the fact that I'm still breathing answers that question. If I ever got in trouble with the police, Momma would kill me."

Sarah whispers, "I know you husband, you aren't being nosy. What are you thinking?"

Chuck answers quietly, "Let's see if the office needs a good driver for the surveillance van. If they do, I'll have Morgan run a check on Jeffrey. I have a good feeling about him. If he checks out, we can bring him to Burbank for training and see how he interacts with Gretchen."

Sarah sits up straight, her mouth open in surprise, "Charles Bartowski, you understood me?" His eyebrow goes up. Sarah lowers her voice, "You sneaky little intersect you. You flashed. You understood every word."

Chuck laughs, "Baby, I don't know what you mean. I'm just lucky an angel fell out of the sky, special for me."

Sarah reaches over and kisses him, "I'm going to have to be more careful around you. Did I hear my name? Oh, you are so sneaky. You know you would have made a good spy." They laugh together.

The car pulls into the lot outside the Chicago office. Jeffrey opens the door and Chuck and Sarah get out. "Come on Jeffrey, I'm going to need you to answer some questions."

Jeffrey follows along behind the couple, "You mean for the website?"

Chuck nods as he enters his entry code into the punch pad, "Yeah that, and I can't hire you until you pass a security check."

Jeffrey stops, "Hire me?"

Chuck turns towards him, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't assume you'd want to work for us. I guess you planned on hitting on my wife and riding off into the sunset."

Jeffrey starts to stammer, "No Sir."

Chuck is having fun, "I see, so you don't want to work for us. Are you not riding off, and you plan on hitting on my wife some more?

Sarah is laughing nonstop, "Chuck stop. Jeffrey, he's messing with your words. I'm okay with you hitting on me, but my lover Boris gets very jealous."

Jeffrey's head is swiveling back and forth between them, "But I'm not… Yes, I would… who's Boris, is he mean. I mean, oh I give up, I have no idea what I mean."

The couple laugh as they pull him into the building, "Come on, maybe you shouldn't have had that Krupnik, you seem confused."

Jeffrey whines as he follows, "But I didn't, I'm driving."

Chuck walks up to the receptionist, he hands her his identification. She stands up, "Mr. Bartowski, Sir. We've been expecting you. Mr. Steele is awaiting your arrival in his office. Ma'am you must be Ms. Walker." Sarah hands over her identification. The receptionist takes both I.D.s and slips them into clear plastic clip on badges. "Mr. Steele asked if you would both wear your I.D.s visibly until your new employees get to know you, Sir. Who is this gentleman?"

Chuck takes his I.D. and clips it to the lapel on his jacket, Sarah does the same, and answers. "This is Jeffrey Kozlowski, our driver. He'll need a visitors badge and a comfortable place to wait for us."

The receptionist picks up the phone, "Of course Ma'am I'll have a couple of escorts here right away."

Chuck waves his hand, "You'll only need one, I know the way. Jeffrey, please do as this young lady directs. The last time someone didn't listen to her, it took days to get the bloodstains off the walls."

Sarah is laughing when she smacks his arm, "Chuck stop it, he's going to think your either serious, insane or both."

Sarah looks at the name plate on the desk, "Miss Holt, Laura, please see that Mr. Kozlowski is made comfortable and his needs are met."

Laura gives Chuck a weird look, thinking, he's the boss, this guy is nuts. "Of course, Ma'am, right away."

Chuck heads down the corridor, Sarah close behind shaking her head. "Chuck, these people hardly know you. Behave."

Chuck smiles wide, "Yes Ms. Walker, Ma'am. If you insist. See I should have brought Morgan, he lets me have fun."

Sarah speaks softly, "I suppose you're right, next trip he can play stewardess."

Chuck makes a nasty face, "EWWWWWWW, now I'll won't get that picture out of my mind, yuck."

Sarah is laughing as Chuck walks up to the desk outside his office. His Office Manager, an attractive young brunette, is hard at work. She looks up from her keyboard. She stands, "Mr. Bartowski, it's nice to see you again, Sir. Ms. Walker it's nice to meet you. Mr. Steele is waiting for you in his office."

Chuck nods, "Ms. Constance Brooks, Sarah Walker. It's good to see you as well. Is the whole staff here today?"

She nods, "Yes Sir, they were all called in, in anticipation of your visit. There are a couple of operatives in the field, who won't make it."

Chuck smiles, "Good, that sounds efficient, make sure you take notes and keep them updated. Let's have everyone in the conference room in say forty-five minutes. Would you please give Mr. Steele a call and ask him to join us in my office."

She reaches for the phone, "Yes Sir, right away."

Chuck opens the door and walks into his office, Sarah grabs his hand as he closes the door, "I'm not sure I like you having such a hot, young secretary."

Chuck walks around to sit behind his desk, "Oh was he hot. I'm sure he's not my type."

Sarah puts her hands on her hips, "Very funny Mr. Bartowski, you know perfectly well she's a woman. I don't think you'll be making any visits to Chicago without your wife."

Chuck smiles as he opens his case and puts his laptop on the desk, "Fantastic, my plan worked. Why would I want to go anywhere without you?"

There's a knock at the door, Chuck calls out, "Come in."

A tall thin man with dark hair enters. Sarah checks him out. She sizes him up, handsome, wearing a fashionable grey suit. She picks up a slight limp. He favors his right leg. He's carrying a concealed weapon, well-hidden but noticeable. She can tell, this guy is a pro. She watches as he immediately takes in his surroundings.

He scans all the corners of the room. His eyes run up and down Sarah, noting the bulge in the small of her back, where her gun is holstered. He notes the rings on her left hand. "Mr. Bartowski, welcome back sir. This must be Ms. Sarah Walker, The fourth partner in CI." He offers his hand to her, Sarah shakes it. "I see congratulations are in order Sir. Best of luck to both of you. You may want to work on that bulge. Chicago is tough on concealed weapons." Sarah is impressed. She takes a seat on the couch against the wall and moves her gun to her purse.

Chuck points to a seat in front of his desk, "Thanks Remy, have a seat. I'm just going over your numbers for the last quarter. Not bad, but not impressive. You're barely meeting expenses. Any thoughts on how you can improve on that."

Steele leans forward, "I would have to agree with you Sir, as you know we were still absorbing some of our startup costs last quarter. Then there was your order to hire only the best. We took a big hit on hiring bonuses as well. That should all settle out in our next annual report. With those expenses gone, our bottom line isn't as disappointing. I received a call from Mr. Grimes, he suggested that our office will be getting more work as a result of some new contracts. Overall Sir, I understand your concerns. However, I think you'll see a nice upswing come next quarter."

Chuck sits back and nods, "All noted. However, I hired you to be a Rainmaker not just run the office. I don't expect you to rely on contracts that I bring in. I want to see what you can do. I'd like weekly reports on new prospects, bid on and closed. Let me remind you that your compensation and position is based on new business that you bring in."

Steele nods, "I hear you, Boss. I won't let you down."

Chuck smiles, "Good now on to more pleasant things. I have a friend in the lounge who needs help creating a simple website for his family's restaurant. I would consider it a personal favor if you would allow one of your coders to assist him. We'll be doing the work Pro Bono.

Shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. In return the company will have a standing ten percent discount on some of the best food I've ever eaten. I was also wondering if we need a good driver, I like this guy. If you think you can use him, and if you like him. I'd appreciate if you would get his info to Mr. Grimes for screening."

Steele stands up, "As luck would have it, we do need a driver. Your endorsement is enough for me. May I use your phone Sir?" Chuck waves his okay. Steele picks up the phone and punches in a number. "Ms. Mae, Mr. Steele. There's a gentleman in the lounge, please have one of your people speak with him and get the spec requirements for a website. Yes, it is outside our normal work, this is a special situation for Mr. Bartowski. Also, have him help the gentleman fill out our online employment application. Once completed Email a copy to Mr. Grimes at the home office. Yes, I know about the meeting, your man will be excused. Thank you, Ms. Mae, we'll see you in the conference room shortly." Steele hangs the phone up and sits back down.

Chuck sits back, "Okay Remy, formalities dispensed with. How are you doing?"

Steele sits back and crosses his legs. Chuck notes the defensive posture. "Overall, Chuck not bad, let's face it I've worked for bigger assholes."

Sarah is shocked, "Excuse me."

Chuck laughs, "Relax Hon, Remy is an old friend we were frat brothers at Stanford. That was before he got wounded working for the FBI. How did you know we were married?"

Steele shrugs, "I saw her rings, you told me you were once an item, it made sense, and you didn't correct me."

Chuck shakes his head and laughs, "Still the same old Remy, you don't miss a thing. Now tell me what's bugging you?"

Steele laughs, "Yeah you don't miss much either. I'm feeling a lot of pressure here. Chuck, I don't want to let you down. You've come a long way since what happened to you at school. I don't want to be the one to slow your roll."

Chuck nods, "I get you, and I appreciate you. Do you have my back?"

Steele nods, "Always."

Chuck stands up, "Then relax, just be you and we'll be fine. Come on let's not keep them stewing too long. I'm sure they're wondering if they still have jobs."

They walk down the corridor past an open bay work area and several open office doors, all empty. Walking into the conference room Chuck and Sarah are greeted with stares by about twenty men and women. The three of them walk to the head of the table. Steele speaks to the group, "Most of you remember Mr. Bartowski, Managing Partner of our company. I'll let him introduce his companion."

Chuck smiles, "Good afternoon, everyone, I hope we haven't kept you waiting too long. In the future I hope to have our meetings catered by a local restaurant we discovered. We've arranged for you to get a ten percent discount when you order from them. This is Ms. Walker, a full partner in our little firm. She's very pretty and she looks nice, don't let that fool you. If she doesn't scare you yet, let me tell you, she terrifies me. Ms. Walker is my wife." The room breaks into laughter. "I'll let her say a few words, tell you who she is. Sarah you're up."

Chuck moves aside and Sarah takes his place, "Thanks for the heads up, Hon. Now you have reason to be scared." The room breaks into laughter again. "He didn't warn me that I would be speaking."

She takes a deep breath, "Okay here's the truth; I've been a silent partner until recently. That means I don't know much about this operation. But I've worked in the security field for about ten years. Here's what I do know, Mr. Bartowski is the kindest, most caring, loyal man, I've ever met. He's also the smartest, sharpest, quickest mind I know. I hope to learn how I can support you in accomplishing your mission, whatever it may be. You have my word, if you support Carmichael Industries, you will never be left in the cold. You'll always have a team of the best people ready to cover your back.

Back in the home office we're working on new curriculums to train you in the latest techniques and gadgetry available. That includes undercover work, martial arts, and of course Mr. Bartowski's specialty, cyber security. If you want to become the best in this field, all you have to do is show us how bad you want that training. Okay, that's enough from me. Here's the Boss… at work, the boss at work." The room laughs again.

Chuck takes off his jacket, rolls up his sleeves and takes a seat, Sarah sits next to him. "Our Ms. Brooks will be taking detailed notes of this meeting from here on out. Okay people, tell me what we can do better." Chuck smiles and nods as he takes suggestions from his employees. He's pleased that they're not afraid to talk to him. He notes that as good leadership by his friend Remy.

When the chat slows down, he claps his hands and leans forward, "Okay folks here's the good news. I've just hired a top-notch agent from the DEA. She's a master at surveillance, martial arts, and undercover work. In addition, we have agents from the NSA, CIA and I'm working on bringing in members of the U.S. Navy Seal Teams. All of these people are being brought in to make CI operatives the best in the world. Ms. Walker was telling the truth. Show me the initiative I need to see to keep this office open. In return, I will train you, at my expense, to make you the best of the best."

A young Asian woman in the back raises her hand.

Chuck smiles, "Alright, initiative, that's what I like to see. Yes, miss?"

The woman stands, "Mae, Sir, my name is Margret Mae."

Chuck smiles, "Yes Ms. Mae, How can I help you?"

Mae speaks confidently, "Well Sir, you've spoken a lot about the field operative training, but I'm in Cyber Division, what about us?"

Chuck smiles wide, "Ah, Margret Mae, I think I've got something to say to you. You've asked the right question. Cyber is my field. Have you ever heard of a hacker who goes by the name Piranha?"

Mae's eyes go wide, "Everybody in the hacker world knows that name. But The Piranha disappeared years ago. Rumor has it he pissed off the wrong people and is taking a dirt nap."

Chuck nods his head, "You can't always trust rumors. What if I told you he works at CI? Would you like to work with him, train with him?"

Mae leans forward, "Sir if you can put me in a room with The Piranha, I would work for you for free."

Chuck smiles, "I don't think that'll be necessary, but you'll need to prove you have the chops to sit next to him. Okay folks I hope I got your attention. Dig in, make your office profitable, I'll make it worth your while."

The room empties out, Chuck is talking with Steele. Mae approaches Sarah, "Do you have a moment Ma'am?"

Sarah nods, "Of course, what can I do for you Ms. Mae?"

Mae is hesitant, "No disrespect intended Ma'am. Does The Piranha really work at CI?"

Sarah smiles, "Yes, he does."

Mae get excited, "Have you met him?"

Sarah nods and smiles inwardly, "Yes, I have."

Mae looks at her feet, "Is he really cool? I mean I heard he was."

Sarah is loving this delicious moment, "He is very cool. He's also sweet, gentle, and very smart."

Mae is breathing hard shaking her head, "Wow you really know him? The Piranha."

Sarah wants to laugh out loud, but she controls herself, "Yes Ms. Mae. I really know him, he's a close friend."

Mae lowers her voice, "I heard he's really hot, is that true?"

Sarah lowers her voice as well, "If I answer, you have to promise not to tell my husband what I say." Mae nods her head rapidly. "He's the hottest man I've ever met."

Mae steps back, her mouth wide open, "Wow! That's saying something, I mean your husband is … oops! Sorry Boss almost crossed a line. I'll simply say, you're a lucky woman."

Sarah laughs as she walks Mae to the door, "That's okay, I know my husband is gorgeous, the good news is, he doesn't know. Mae, you do the work, I'll make sure you meet The Piranha. Tell you what, I'll ask him to keep an eye on you. When he sees what he's looking for he'll reach out to you. Remember he only works with White Hats." Mae is all smiles as she leaves the room.

Chuck calls to her from across the room, "Hon, are you ready to go, or would you like to stay here? I can come back for you."

Sarah takes a deep breath, "I can do the next step. It's only a short ride into the suburbs."

Chuck smiles and walks over to her, he whispers in her ear, Sarah giggles, "Chuck, we're at work."

Chuck takes her hand, he softly says, "I love my wife, sue me. Let's collect Jeffrey, I'm dying to hug my niece."

Sarah follows him, she says uncertainly, "Yeah, me too."

Steele walks them to the door where Jeffrey is waiting for them, "Mr. Bartowski, you've got some team here. They're already working on the website, and they helped me finish my application."

Chuck nods, "You should thank Mr. Steele, it's his team. You may want to be nice to him, if your security clearance goes through, he'll be your boss."

Jeffrey steps over and enthusiastically shakes his hand, "Yes Sir, Mr. Steele, thank you. It would be an honor to work on a team like this."

Steele smiles, "Jeffrey, Mr. Bartowski has the best instincts of any man I know, if he says you'll be a good fit, I trust him. Your first job is to make sure we get some of this great food I've been hearing about."

Jeffrey smiles, "You got it Sir, you call in an order and I'll deliver it personally. I'll make sure it's fresh and hot."

Steele claps him on the shoulder, "Good man, but I think your current bosses are waiting to go."

They turn in their badges and head out the door. Jeffery can barely contain himself, "Thank you Sir, Ma'am, this is a great opportunity, for me and my family. It's like you're some kind of magical wizard making everything better."

Sarah laughs, "Nah, that's just silly. You have the address for our next stop. I hope you don't mind Jeffrey we'd like some privacy for this part of the drive."

Jeffrey shakes his head, "Yes Ma'am, I know exactly where we're going. That's no problem, Ma'am, I'll close the partition as soon as you're seated."

Chuck and Sarah get into the car and true to his word the partition closes as soon as he gets in the driver's seat.

Sarah is lighthearted when the door closes, "Chuck that young woman is madly in love with The Piranha, she can't be more than Twenty-two."

Chuck laughs, "She's twenty-three, Remy says she's an incredible coder and his best cyber security agent. She runs the division. She started coding when she was five. She's enamored with a persona, not a person. Plus, Natasha would kill anyone who tried to steal me."

Sarah smiles halfheartedly. She moves as close to Chuck as she can get, "Baby, were you being honest with me? You won't be upset with me, no matter what I decide?"

Chuck holds her close, "Sweetheart the only thing that might upset me is if you aren't honest with me."

The rest of the ride is quiet, Sarah is snuggled as close to Chuck as she can get. When the car stops, the partition rolls down. Jeffrey announces, "We're here folks, shall I open the door?"

Chuck shakes his head, "That's okay Jeffrey, I'll get it. We'll be here for a while I hope you don't mind the wait. Please close the partition again."

Chuck sits quietly holding Sarah. Minutes pass, she finally sits up. Her eyes are filled with tears waiting to happen. She shakes her head, "I'm sorry Baby, I can't do it. I can't go in."

A/N Yes, yes, I know. You think I'm deliberately delaying the meeting between Sarah and Ellie just to keep you going. My very own proofreader chewed me out for doing just that. Then he read what I've written, and he agreed this is what the characters would do. Except for making Sarah stay in the car, he didn't care for that. That was a little payback for Chuck. So there.

I've explained before. The characters write the story. Of course, I could make the chapter 20,000 words long. The problem I have with that is; it steals from the importance of the moments I've described.

Sarah having fun, sexually or otherwise is important. I personally loved my homage to YS. Chuck handling business, putting aside his personal wants, is major growth for him. He's also giving Sarah the time she needs to confront her fears. Fears that are new to her. To me first and foremost is Chuck's ability to be there for people and his love for Sarah. So, I'm truly sorry if I disappointed you. It is not my intent to tease, or delay. My intent is to express my vision for these characters.

I will give you this, you have my word that it won't be too much longer, Ellie and Sarah, will happen. For those of who are enjoying this story regardless of how I write it thanx. For those I have disappointed, I am truly sorry for any harm I may have caused.

I also have to thank my loyal readers who jumped in and supported the decisions I've made. LR

The most iconic Polish food of all time, pierogi needs little introduction. Polish dumplings are made of thinly rolled-out dough filled with endless varieties of fillings, both savory and sweet, including meat, sauerkraut, wild mushrooms, cheese, bilberries, blueberries or strawberries. Pierogi are boiled or fried and served steaming hot.

Gołąbki translates literally as little pigeons, although these cabbage rolls have nothing to do with birds at all. Typically, boiled cabbage leaves are wrapped around a filling of minced pork and rice. However, there are also other variations of fillings such as poultry and mutton, and others without meat. The rolls are then braised in stock. When laid on plates, a delicious dense home-made tomato sauce is poured over the gołąbki. Polish cabbage rolls are served with bread, sometimes with boiled potato

Kluski śląskie or Silesian Dumplings come from Silesia, a region in the southwest of Poland (think Wrocław) that also encompasses small bits of Germany and the Czech Republic, but Silesain Dumplings are so popular throughout Poland that they're readily available in the refrigerator case of supermarkets all over the country, coming in a package that reminds me of brown and serve rolls.

They are potato dumplings much like you'll find all over Central and Eastern Europe except for the addition of the indentation in the center of Silesain Dumplings. The shape has two benefits; it helps the dumpling cook faster and it is a wonderful repository for whatever topping is paired with the dumpling.

Polish Beef Rolls {Zrazy Zawijane}

Tender, aromatic beef in rich, smooth sauce… traditional Polish beef rolls, is one of the most signature Polish dishes.
