Chapter 36
Swim My Little Fishies, Swim
Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA
The limo pulls into the CI garage and up to the private elevator entrance. Sarah punches in the entry code and allows the retinal scanner to confirm her identity. While she does that, Alex, and Clifford assist Gretchen in climbing out of the car and getting steady on her crutches. Gretchen shakes her head, "I gotta tell you guys, this letting people help me still feels weird. I'm stuck between freaking out and feeling grateful."
Sarah is waiting by the elevator doors making sure they don't close on her. "You're doing fine Gretchen. Take your time. Chuck has plans for you. You need to not get hurt again."
Gretchen laughs as the elevator door closes, "Plans huh? Let me guess. He needs a practice dummy to pound on."
Sarah's face shows she's not pleased. "Gretchen, you can't let Chuck hear you say anything like that. I know you're joking but he still feels awful about hurting you."
Alex adds, "That's not cool Gretchen."
"Yeah, I know. I was joking. I'll be careful. I owe him big time. I have no desire to hurt him."
Sarah smiles, "I know. Remember no matter how tough and confident he appears to be, underneath he's still that nerd you first met. I won't tolerate him being hurt.
Now are you ladies ready to get to work? The boss has already admonished me for slacking off. He's going to be tied up again today. We need to keep things running. I have to let Mrs. S. and Casey know we're back. We can work in our residence again.
Gretchen, I have no need to make you feel bad. However, I need to remind you that your movements in the company are still restricted. Morgan is working with General Beckman's people to get clearances. Patience is the way to go. In the meantime, we value you as our guest and friend." The elevator door opens at the residence level.
Gretchen takes a deep breath and hobbles towards the residence door. "I know Sarah, you have my word, I'll behave. No improv, follow the rules, support my team, let them support me. I get it."
Chuck takes a swig of wine. Almost ready for a test launch. The hard part comes in waiting for the results. I'm having fun with the coding, but I'm sure I won't enjoy the days and weeks that may follow. Chuck takes a deep breath, doesn't matter. I'm going to find that bastard and make sure he can't hurt my family.
While Chuck runs through his code one last time, Morgan is on the phone with the Government Services Administration (GSA). "Yes, Commander, I get it, we need an official GSA vendor's number to complete the contracts. Our lawyers have checked the contracts, they look good from our end. I don't get it, what's the hold up? What do you mean someone put a hold on the process? I see, our new employee has caused concerns, and we'll need to have additional screenings. Okay, well keep us in the loop. Carmichael Industries is ready for whatever you throw at us."
Somewhere else in the world
Fuckin' rookie bitch, ripped me off. That was my retirement. Six years, I've been searching for her, six stinkin' years. Traces all over the world. Then poof, no more leads. It's as if someone threw a blanket over her. This search has cost me a fortune. But not as big as the fortune I'll get when I find her.
Carmichael Industries, Chicago IL
"Wake up Maggie, I have something to say to you."
Margret Mae's head snaps up from her desk. She immediately wipes the drool from her chin. She's embarrassed, seeing Remy Steele standing over her across the desk. "Sorry Mr. Steele, I worked on this project all night."
"Maggie, I thought we had an understanding. This 'project' is not supposed to interfere with your work."
"It's not Sir, I was working at night, after hours."
"Ms. Mae, I've been calling you all morning. I have a client who needs your skills. Are you up to it?"
"Yes Sir, Let me grab a cup of coffee and I'll scan the file and get up to speed."
Remington sighs and falls into the chair opposite her. "Maggie, look, The Piranha is the best there is, literally the best in the world. There's no shame in not beating The Piranha. No one has."
Maggie tilts her head to one side. "I'm sorry Sir, you led me to believe that you didn't know anything about the Piranha. Do you know who he is?"
Remy smiles and shrugs his shoulders, "Who said he's, a he?" He could be a she."
Maggie jumps up, "You do know. You know who the Piranha is."
"Ms. Mae, are you prepared to go back to work, or should I assign your people myself?"
"Negative Sir, I'm on it. Sir, is the Piranha a good person? Am I going to be disappointed?"
"Maggie, you're jumping the gun. You haven't beat them yet." Steele gets up and walks to the door. "They're the best person I know. Now get to work."
Maggie leans back in her chair, computer genius, super-hot, best person, who the hell is this guy. He sounds like that comic book superhero, SHAZAM. A combination of all the gods. Suddenly Maggie jumps up, "OH! Shit if I don't get to work, I'll be out of a job. Where's that coffee?"
Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA
Chuck goes over his work one last time. He starts the compiling process and kicks back. Pushing the button, he unlocks his office. No need to hide away now, everything I can do is done. He leans over and presses the intercom button.
"Yes Boss."
"Mrs. Sawyer, I'm available if you need me. Please let Mr. Casey and Mr. Grimes know. I'll call the boss myself."
"Yes Sir, You should know she was by earlier to check on you. She asked me to send her a text as soon as I heard from you. She already knows you've come out of your hole."
Chuck laughs, "I don't have a prayer with you two in cahoots. Thank you, Mrs. S." Before Chuck can hang up the private entry door opens.
Sarah walks in and puts a plate in front of him, "Hon, you need to eat something."
Chuck reaches up and pulls his wife into his lap. "That's the best offer I've had all day." He starts to kiss her neck and nibble on her ear.
Sarah shivers, "Charles Bartowski, behave yourself, you're going to get me all worked up and then tell me you have to work. Eat your lunch. I want to be sure you have your strength when I make you pay for teasing me this way."
Chuck sighs, "Yes Dear." Chuck keeps her on his lap as he puts the sandwich in his mouth.
"Did you do it Baby? Did you find him?"
Chuck finishes chewing the food in his mouth. "I'm sorry Sarah, I didn't mean to get you so prematurely hopeful. I've barely finished the first step. I wrote the program using the data I have. Now the computer is compiling the coding and then I'll release it into the digital world where the information will be compared to what's out there. When the raw data comes back, I'll have to go through it and discern what's useful and what's noise."
Chuck glances at the screen on his laptop. "Baby, you're right on time to release my little fishies into the internet ocean. Press this button, and you'll release my program. Sarah Walker will start the official hunt to find Kiernan Ryker and remove his threat, forever."
Sarah leans over and kisses her husband. She kisses him softly, caressing his lips with her own. She takes her time enjoying the feel, the taste of the man she loves. Her hand holds his face gently, softly pulling his mouth closer. A tear rolls down her cheek and lands on Chuck's. He holds her close, "Sarah?"
She lays her head on his shoulder. "Chuck, I love you so much. I've never felt such feelings. The strangest thing is just when I think my feelings couldn't possibly get stronger, they do. Thank you for loving me."
Chuck smiles as he feels his heart grow warm with the love he feels for his woman. "Are you ready Baby? Are you ready to launch the beginning of the end?"
Sarah nods her head against his shoulder, "I'm ready, but I don't want to move. I like it here. You know this is my safe place. It may not be totally rational. But I believe that as long as I'm right here in your arms, nothing can hurt me."
Chuck holds her tighter, "Yep that's me Chuck 'invulnerable shield' Bartowski."
Sarah purrs and rubs her face into his shoulder and neck, "Mmmm Hmmm, that's right, my invulnerable shield. Now show me that button again. I want to get this over with so that I can marry my husband, and we can start our lives."
Chuck points to the enter key and Sarah stretches her arm unwilling to give up her perch. Her finger hits the button and symbols fly from the bottom of the screen to the top. Chuck cackles, "Swim my little pretties, swim, and find that evil bastard. Find him one little Piranha byte at a time. Bring him back to us so I can drop a house on that evil bitch, SWIM." Chuck throws his head back and lets out a cackling laugh, "HAHAHAHAHA, SWIM my little fishies, SWIM!
Sarah laughs, and hugs him hard, "My very own handsome, magical, wicked nerd of the west. Baby, finish your lunch, we still need to call Ellie." Sarah gets up and moves to a chair so that Chuck can eat his sandwich.
The Woodcomb home, Chicago, IL and Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA
"Woodcomb residence, this is Dr. Woodcomb."
"Hi Devon, how's my awesome brother-in-law?"
Sarah can hear the big smile in his voice, "Sarah, so good to hear from you. Wait, I'll put you on speaker. Ellie, Clara, Sarah's on the phone."
Chuck and Sarah smile when they hear the screaming. "Auntie Sarah, hi it's me, it's Clara, is Uncle Chuck there?"
"I'm right here, how's my favorite niece?"
"Uncle Chuck are you being silly? I'm your only niece."
"Oh yeah, what about Beauty, isn't she my niece too?"
There's silence for a moment, "Oh yeah, I forgot Beauty. Mommy took me to see Bubbie and we learned how to make pierogies. It was so much fun. Jeffrey came to see us while we were there. He gave me a big hug. He told me to say hi when I talked to you. Bubbie said she misses you, and Poppa too."
Chuck and Sarah laugh quietly at Clara's effusiveness. "Sweetie, is Mommy there?"
"AUNTIE SARAH! I miss you so much. When are you coming back for a tea party?"
"Oh, Clara sweetie, If I could be there right now, I would be. I miss my Clara hugs. That's the sucky part of being grown-ups. Uncle Chuck and I need to work. We're going to see you as soon as possible, I promise. Just as soon as possible, and like I told you I hope to have a big surprise for you. Uncle Chuck is working really hard to make that happen."
Chuck steps in, "Clara, you know I never break a promise. We're going to see you, just as soon as possible. Right now, will you go in your room with April and play with Beauty, and give her a hug for us. Auntie Sarah and I need to talk to Mommy and Daddy about boring grown-up stuff."
"Okay Uncle Chuck, I love you, I love you too Auntie Sarah."
"Okay Bro, the coast is clear. What's up?"
"Well, it seems that prowler you tranqed…"
Ellie is shocked, "You tranqed?"
Devon sounds all proud, "I sure did, put that dart right in his gluteus maximus."
Chuck laughs, "Yep Sis, watch out for Super Spy Awesome. Anyway, the prowler was a grad student from Northwestern. He and his buddies bugged your house and tried to steal your notes. No big government baddies. Just a bunch of Chinese idiots trying to plagiarize your work. He's in government custody. His cronies are being investigated to be sure the Chinese government isn't involved. They'll all be deported when the investigation is complete. Bottomline, You're all safe. I'll be happy when you're here and we can keep an eye on you. We'll also make sure your research is kept safe from prying eyes."
"Thank you, Chuck. You're a good brother."
"No problem, Sis, did the agency send their man over to secure the house?"
"They did, he was very nice. Having April here made me feel much safer while a stranger was in the house."
"Were you able to work something out with Remy?"
"Haven't tried yet Sarah, April is still considering the offer. I hope she stays, but I would understand if she didn't. We're being patient and letting Clara work her magic on her."
"Any luck on a doctor for Jeffrey?"
Ellie laughs, "Sarah you should have been here. While Momma was teaching us to cook, she kept hinting. She wouldn't say anything straight. She didn't want to make Clara jealous." They all laugh.
"Chuck, you know how you're always saying how you can never thank me for taking care of you when we were kids? Well, now it's my turn. Thank you for taking care of my family and for bringing such lovely people into our lives. The Kozlowski family is wonderful. I love that Clara is learning about a new culture. Two new cultures actually."
Chuck shrugs, Sarah smiles, "He says you're welcome, Ellie."
Ellie laughs, "He shrugged, didn't he?"
Sarah laughs as Chuck's face turns red, "Yes, he did. Are you guys okay now?"
"We are Sarah, we are. When do you think we'll see you again?"
Sarah sighs, "Not soon enough, but like I told Clara, Chuck is working hard on a special project that will help free us up quite a bit. In the meantime, we could sure use your plans for the clinic and foundation. We can't start on that until we know what you want."
Devon answers, "We know guys. We're totally onboard and working up a plan. Let us know when it would be convenient for us to come out and do some house hunting and get a look at what space is available to us on your campus."
Ellie interjects, "We also need to pick out gowns, including Sarah's."
Chuck is excited, "AWESOME, I mean that's awesome I wasn't calling your name. You let us know when you want to come out and we'll make it work on our end. Guys, I need to go. I love you. Give Clara a hug from me."
Sarah jumps in, "From me too. I love you too. Send me pictures of gowns you like, and I'll show them to Alex."
"We love you too. Let Casey know we're coming out so we can set up a good workout."
Ellie sighs, "Yes Chuck that would be the important thing. We won't need a place to stay, we can just sleep in the gym." Chuck and Sarah laugh. "I love you both, missing you. Sarah let me know when we need to make more plans with Joyce. Bye, I hate to hang up. Bye."
Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA
Sarah Kisses Chuck, "Hon, can you take a little time to relax now?"
Chuck smiles, "Sure right after I take care of our rapidly growing international business. Then I should have time to call Beckman and see what the government wants from me. Then I can contact our lawyers to figure out how to handle the liabilities of having a clinic on site. Of course, that will lead to the insurance people, the accountants, the tax lawyers."
Sarah plops into his lap, "Baby, take a breath. Is there some reason the rest of us can't handle some of that?"
"Well, I suppose you could handle the foundation and clinic research. Of course, that depends where you are with the training program and our wedding plans. The Beckman issue is cyber so that's on me. It may mean a trip to DC. Yeah, I guess maybe I am a little wired. I suppose I could take a couple of hours."
Sarah plants soft kisses along the side of his neck, "Uh, uh, couple of hours, not enough."
Chuck shivers, "I suppose I could take three hours or so."
Sarah starts to nibble on his ear, "MMMM HMMMM." Chuck reaches over and taps the intercom button. "Yes Boss."
"Mrs. S., Ms. Walker and I will be taking the rest of the day off. We'll see you in the morning. Please contact Mr. Casey and the Grimes', ask them to join me in my office at nine."
"Okay Boss, I'm on it. have a good night."
Sarah mumbles around Chuck's ear, "Trust me Mrs. Sawyer, he will."
Mrs. Sawyer laughs. "Oh! I trust you, Boss, I trust you."
Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA and Chicago, IL
The next day Chuck and Sarah arrive in his office preparing for a partner's meeting when the intercom buzzes. Chuck pushes the button, "Yes Mrs. Sawyer."
"Boss, Mr. Steele from the Chicago office is on line one."
"Thank you, I'll take it." Chuck picks up the phone. "Hi Remy, what's up?" The door opens and Casey walks in. Chuck points to a chair.
"Chuck what are you trying to pull? You have my Senior Director in charge of Cyber in a tailspin."
"Well good morning, Remy, nice to hear from you. We're about to start a partners meeting glad you could join us. Let me put you on speaker. You remember John Casey our Head of Security."
"Hi Remy, been awhile, how they hangin'?"
"I'm good, how about you Casey? Wait, Chuck you're not going to distract me."
"Remy why would I distract you. However, I would like to point out it's a little rude for you not to say hi to Sarah."
Sarah laughs quietly, "Hi Remy, nice to hear from you."
"Hi Sarah, maybe I can get a straight answer from you. What's he up to?"
Morgan walks in, "Morning folks, how's everyone doing?"
Chuck waves, "I'm doing good Buddy, Sarah made me get some rest last night. Carrying the whole cyber load for the company is wearing me out."
Steele yells into his phone, "Chuck NO, you can't steal Maggie from me. I won't let you."
"Remy you remember Morgan. You know as long as you and I have been friends, Morgan has been my best buddy for over twenty-five years. Oh! Look, his wife Alex just came in. You know Alex is John's daughter."
Alex is cheery, "Hi Remy, how's the weather in Chicago?"
"Chuck stop it. I was there when you threw up on your shoes when you pledged our frat. You're not going to distract me."
Chuck smiles at his partners. "Remy, what are you talking about? How can I steal one of my own employees?"
"Damn you Bartowski. Are you really going to pull rank on me?"
"So, Remy have you tried Jeffrey's family's restaurant. I'm telling you the food is like heaven."
Steels sighs, "Yes Chuck, I've tried it. We ordered in yesterday. The food was insanely good. Chuck, I know you're the boss, but I need my cyber expert."
"Remy, are you breathing yet? I would never pull rank on you. Remember hurting you hurts all of us. Not going to happen. She hasn't passed my test yet. Plus, would you really hold her back? A move up to VP would keep her available to you and give me the backup I need. Her compensation package will reflect her new responsibilities. I don't think she'll mind that."
"Chuck, she's obsessed with beating The Piranha. She's sleeping at her desk, not eating. It's affecting her work."
All the people in the Burbank office laugh loudly. Sarah catches her breath. "Remy, you're working against yourself. We just watched two days of the same action here. You're convincing Chuck he made the right choice."
Steele sighs in resignation, "Fine. I guess you know what you're doing. What do you want me to do about April Dancer? Your contract is about to run out on her."
Sarah makes it easy on Chuck, "Remy, Ellie will be contacting you about that soon. She's your client. Work things out with her. Chuck won't intervene. He made it clear to her that it's between you and the Woodcombs."
Steele seems to relax. "Okay, I hear you, no heavy-handed micromanagement. I guess I can appreciate where you're coming from with the Maggie situation. But you can't hold it against me if I'm rooting for her to fail your test."
Chuck leans back in his chair. "I get it Remy. Please remember, we're on the same side. You make money, we make money. You didn't tell her who I am, did you?"
"Nope, your secret is safe with me."
Sarah adds, "Good. I want to see her face when she meets The Piranha."
"What? You're going to pull her to Burbank?"
"Remy, relax. Chuck promised her training. But you need to be flexible with her time. We'll have to see where she serves the company best. Nothing is written in stone. It's all about what works best in the big picture. There's no way we would steal her from you without warning."
"Remy, depending on how she does on my test, I may be sending her to a big job in DC. The contract would be out of your office. You get the numbers. Of course, if I handle the job…"
"Okay Chuck, I get it. You wouldn't shaft me. Sorry I doubted you. It's nice to know you have a boss to answer to as well."
"No problem, Remy. That's why I hired you. I want you to defend that office with everything you've got. I won't interfere unless I think it'll help us all. Why does everyone keep saying that? She's, my wife. Not my boss. Right Sarah?"
Sarah pats his shoulder, "Yes of course Dear, just your wife. Now let's wrap this up we have work to do." Everyone in the office smiles. "Remy, we're about to start a partners meeting. Would you like to join us? No secrets, we're all family."
"Thank you, Ms. Walker, it's nice to know that the person at the top has my interest at heart. I have more than enough here to keep me busy. I'm sure you'll let me know what I need to know. If you're busy, you can have Chuck contact me."
Chuck puts on a shocked face and voice, "Hey what's going on here? I'm the boss."
Casey points his unlit cigar at him. "Really? Then why do you keep telling me to stop calling you, Boss? Boss you need to take him in hand, he's really becoming a problem."
Chuck looks back and forth, his mouth open. "HEY!"
Sarah smiles. She bends and kisses Chuck. "We know you're busy Remy, we won't keep you any longer. I'll have my assistant contact you as needed."
"Great, I look forward to hearing from you Chuck. You all be good. Later."
Carmichael Industries, Burbank CA
The call ends, Sarah kisses Chuck, "Thanks for being such a good sport Hon."
Chuck smiles, "I could have worse bosses." He looks at Casey, "Right Morgan?" Casey grunts. "What? I was thinking Harry Tang. Okay let's get started, what's going on?"
Casey tosses a large manila envelope on the desk. It's heavy and thick. Chuck picks it up and opens it, Reaching in he pulls out a large blue plastic folder. Opening it, he scans its contents, and smiles wide.
He holds the folder open to show everyone else. On the one side is a certificate, showing the insignia of the United States Marine Corp, covered in clear plastic, proclaiming USMC Major General John Casey retired.
On the opposing side is a letter thanking Casey for his service. Chuck reads it aloud.
"On this date Major General John Casey is retired with all rights and benefits, at one rank higher than his 30 years of service. He has shown himself to be the personification of an officer. His dedication to duty, his loyalty to the Marine corps and his courage in the face of danger; All hallmarks of a superior member of the United States Armed Services.
Major General Casey is commended for actions above and beyond the call of duty. His bravery, his comportment and strength of character are models for those in his chain of command, below him, as well as above.
Major General Casey has been recommended for the Medal of Honor for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. His actions in recent missions, which cannot be disclosed, were performed at the highest standards of professionalism. With no regard for his personal safety and under threat of death, he stepped up and saved a large civilian population.
In breaking with tradition this letter is signed with the greatest pride and gratitude, not only by his Commanding officer, Major General Diane Beckman but also by:
The Commandant of the Marine Corps, The Chief of Naval operations, The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the President of the United States."
Alex is the first to react, she jumps up and hugs Casey. "Dad I'm so proud of you. You're the best Marine a country can have, the best friend a person can have and the best dad a girl can have. I love you, Daddy."
Casey has tears in his eyes as he pats Alex on the back. "Okay Honey okay, I'm just a grunt."
Morgan is next to throw his arms around both of them. "Dad… just thanks for being my dad."
Casey grows increasingly uncomfortable, "Come on Elf. That's enough with the lady feelings."
Sarah and Chuck join the huddle, "OH JEEZ, I'm never gonna show you guys stuff again. Hey new Bartowski, there's something else in that envelope."
Sarah disengages while the others continue to congratulate Casey. She reaches into the large manila envelope and pulls out a white standard letter envelope. She pulls a letter out of the envelope and reads it. "OH MY!"
Chuck looks up, "Everything okay Hon?"
Sarah reads aloud.
"My Dear Bartowskis,
What do you say to a couple that's saved the world countless times? Nothing. I can't say anything. Few people will ever know the good you two have done. I am fortunate to be one of the few. I am still more fortunate to have had you enter my life. In the brief time I have known you my life has gotten better, brighter. I love my family in ways I never knew. Thank you
Sarah Walker Bartowski you have been awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Cross, the highest decoration awarded by the United States Central Intelligence Agency. It is given for a voluntary act or acts of extraordinary heroism involving the acceptance of existing dangers with conspicuous fortitude and exemplary courage. Only a handful of people have been awarded this medal in the history of the agency, most posthumously. As a consequence, it is one of the rarest awards for valor in the United States. No CIA officer has earned this award more than you. I am gratified that I am able to thank you for your service while you are able to accept it. You are officially retired with all rights and benefits of government service.
Charles Irving Bartowski, aka Charles Carmichael, a civilian. You have been awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award of the United States. It is an award that I am privileged to bestow as the President of the United States, recognizing people who have made an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. You have done all of the above. I wish that I could give you the Congressional Gold Medal as well, but I would have to explain why to too many people. Not that they would believe me.
You will receive your medals when I see you in DC. I am saddened that no one will see me give you these awards. Nor will they know the reasons that you are receiving them. There will be no certificates, there will be no applause, no cheers, no accolades. There will only be me, thanking you on behalf of our nation and a world that will never know your contribution to freedom, safety, and our way of life.
Thank you, Sarah, and Chuck.
Signed, your friend, Frank"
As Sarah reads, Chuck and the others slowly stand and stare. Taking in the words, barely comprehending the importance behind them. Slowly as the words leave Sarah's mouth the others surround Chuck and hold him. Tears flow from Sarah's eyes as she reads the words about her husband. When she finishes, she lays the letter on the table and moves over to take him in her arms. "You deserve so much more… so much more. I guess you'll just have to settle for me."
Chuck is struck silent as Morgan wraps his arms around his longtime friend, "And me."
Alex adds her arms to the hug, "And me."
The group is surprised as they're surrounded by the long, strong, arms of John Casey, "And me. You know what original Bartowski? Not bad for a computer nerd. I knew new Bartowski was kick ass, but you never ceased to surprise me."
Chuck wallows in the love of his family, "Who needs medals?"
The group stands quiet for minutes. Alex breaks the silence. "We're never going to know why you guys received these awards, will we?"
Casey is adamant, "No, you won't. Just know, you should be grateful to these two. They saved your lives more than once."
Chuck squeezes Sarah hard. "Knock it off John, you were there, every step of the way."
Sarah hugs Chuck hard. "Casey stop teasing them, you know we can't discuss this. I should never have read that letter out loud. I'm sorry guys."
Morgan shakes his head, "Wrong answer. I know a little of what you guys have done. You both deserve this and much more. Is there anything we can tell Alex, anything at all?"
Sarah sighs, "John?"
Casey plops into his chair and rubs his chin. The group stands around him as he thinks. Suddenly he lifts his head. He jumps up and presses the button to put the office into lockdown.
He returns to his chair and starts to talk. "I read this comic book once about a bad guy who activated an old cold war satellite containing nuclear missiles aimed at L.A.." Casey rubs his chin again. "Now it seems that the guy who designed the missile codes also embedded the codes in an arcade video game that he designed. The bummer is, after he was tortured to reveal the codes, he was killed. The only way to get those codes now, was to beat the game and get to what was called the kill screen.
There was this geek who was supposed to be able to beat the game and get to those codes. Problem was he was a non-hacker, and he gave up before he even tried.
Now we were screwed, and world war three was about to start. There was this very brave, handsome Marine who was tasked with blowing those missiles out of the sky. The odds on accomplishing that were low. Then of course, those missiles exploding over L.A. would still kill thousands of people.
There was another geek. A real computer nerd who knew how to play that game. He figured out that the bad guys were using a television station to send the codes controlling the satellite. Problem was he didn't believe in himself, so he was afraid to try.
However, there was this agent, who believed in him with everything she had. She knew he would save the day as he had done so many times before. She took off to take out the bad guys at the television station.
The computer nerd took in a deep breath and stepped up to the arcade game. I think it was called Missile Command, or some ridiculous thing like that. He failed. Did I mention that this guy was a genius. He figured out that the game was tied to a song.
He had his best friend play the song and he stepped up to the game again. This time he used the rhythm of the music to guide his moves. He did it. He got to the kill screen and got the codes to the agent with seconds to spare. The nerd saved L.A. and stopped the start of Armageddon."
Morgan falls into his chair, "HOLY SHIT! Are you kidding me. Is that what was going on?"
Casey points his cigar at Morgan. "Don't know what you're talking about. It's a story I read in a comic book. Who would believe such nonsense could really happen?"
Chuck laughs, "I read that comic. You forgot to mention that the agent was a really hot blonde that the nerd was madly in love with."
Sarah laughs too, "I read that comic too. He also forgot to mention the bad guys had automatic weapons and the agent came really close to dying in a knife fight, but she kicked all their asses. She may have had feelings for the nerd. She wouldn't tell him. It went against all her training. You see spies don't fall in love. But that didn't stop her from believing in him with all her heart.
That very night she made a wish that she could someday be with the nerd. Of course, it was all a fantasy in a comic book." She kisses Chuck. "But sometimes wishes, even if they're fantasies, can come true."
Alex looks around the room, "This was in a comic book? So, nobody in this room saved the world, and our lives?"
Casey grunts, "Yep. It's also a comic book that should never be discussed again and absolutely never outside this room."
Alex slumps in her chair. "So, I'm just a housewife surrounded by heroes."
Casey's voice gets loud and growly. "Hey, anybody that can put up with the furry elf is a super heroine. Not to mention anyone giving me two beautiful grandsons is not a 'just' anything."
Sarah stands over her, "Listen up Sis, cause I'm getting tired of repeating myself. With the exception of the last couple of months I would have traded my life for yours at any point. It wasn't exciting, it was anxiety-ridden. I was constantly afraid I was about to die. Every time I saw Chuck in danger my heart stopped. I had an entire agency, and a duty-bound partner, keeping me from the man I love.
All you had was one grumpy father, who will stop at nothing to protect you. Time to stop bitching and realize how lucky you are."
Casey sits back, grunts, and smiles.
Alex takes a deep breath. Sheepishly she responds. "Okay, I hear you."
Casey stands, picks up his award and slides it back into the large manila envelope. "Good, can we get on with this now? I was invited to a partners meeting, not a poor me circle. What do you have for us Boss?"
Chuck sits behind his desk. The others take seats around the front opposite him. "Well, Partner, you brought us good news. Morgan you're on. You can get those contracts completed now."
"Chuck, I know you were ready for this. The Government has concerns around Gretchen."
"I hear you. We can give Beckman a call later, I'll broach the topic. Next up: I think I may have found a backup for me in the cyber division. She's sharp. I'm testing her and if she gets through that, I'm going to send her to DC to help Beckman. If she works out on the cyber work and can deal with the brass, and you guys okay it. I want to make her VP in charge of the Cyber Division.
Casey grunts and nods.
Chuck sits back, "Alex would you mind sitting on your father's lap? Sarah, I think he could use a good massage."
Alex climbs into Casey's lap, Sarah moves behind him and puts her hands on his shoulders. He glares at Chuck and Growls. "What the hell are you up to nerd?"
Chuck continues; "On a personal situation, I finished the first step in tracking down Ryker." Casey Growls and tries to stand up. Alex and Sarah hold him down.
"Alex get out. Bartowski I'm gonna rip your head off and shit down your windpipe. I don't want her involved."
Alex and Sarah struggle to hold the big man down. "Dad, I promise I won't do anything dangerous. I want to be part of the team. Dad calm down."
The only thing Casey hears is the blood rushing in his ears. "Grimes you stop this, or I'll make you wish you were never born."
Morgan is frozen he stares at Casey raging, then at Chuck. He's hoping for a hint at what he should do.
Chuck yells, "GENERAL CASEY, AS YOU WERE."
Casey instantly sits up straight.
"John, relax. Alex won't be involved in anything but the briefings. I promise, she will not be in danger. We can use her brains on this."
"Dad, please. I'm not a kid."
Casey speaks softly barely a whisper, "Yes you are, you're my kid."
Alex slowly gets off his lap, "Yes, I am. I love you for protecting me. I would also love you if you let me grow up a little. I'm a wife and a mother and a black belt in the martial arts. I promise I won't do anything you tell me not to." She kisses his cheek as Sarah releases her hold on his shoulders.
Casey calm now, looks at Chuck and growls. "God help you if something happens to her."
Sarah bends and whispers in his ear. "You know he can kick your ass and outshoot you."
Casey grunts, "Fine, let's get on with it." Sarah and Alex return to their seats.
"Before I get into this, Alex you are not now, nor will you ever be a field agent. I enjoy breathing too much. And Casey would enjoy paying me back for years of painful yammering. However, you are a member of this family and a very smart person. Your input is welcome and will be appreciated.
Yesterday I completed a search algorithm to search out anyone who might fit the profile for Kiernan Ryker. A man who has tried to kill Sarah, and if given a chance will try again. I'm guessing you all know that I'm not going to let that happen. I don't have any idea how long it will take for my program to come back with results. In the meantime, we have a company to run."
"Tell me about Gretchen, we have to know how far our asses are hanging out. Before we talk to Beckman,"
"Hon, my instincts tell me she's being real. I believe she wants to be a part of the team."
Alex nods, "I agree."
Chuck sits back in his chair. "Anyone disagree?"
The room is silent, "Alright, I'll back her up with Beckman. How's the training program going?"
Sarah opens her mouth to speak when Chuck's laptop chimes. He looks down and smiles wide. "Looks like I was right about Maggie Mae. She just sent me an Email. Subject line: 'Looking forward to swimming with the fishes in Burbank'. I'll need to review this before we talk to Beckman.
Let's finish up on the training program. Then Sarah, would you ask Mrs. Sawyer to order in some lunch, make sure she includes herself. I'll need a couple of hours. Would one o'clock work for all of you?" Everyone nods. "Good tell us about the training program."
The next half hour passes quickly as Sarah and Alex fills the guys in on the program they've been creating. "Okay, sounds like you're making progress, it would probably go quicker if you weren't joyriding, drinking Mimosas."
Sarah gives Chuck a dirty look, "Excuse me…"
Chuck laughs, "Oh, oh looks like I pissed the boss off. I'll see you guys at one. Let Mrs. S know what you want for lunch. Hon, you know what I like. Oh, one more thing, have Gretchen standing by in the outer office at one. Get lunch for her as well."
Casey, Morgan, and Alex leave the office. Sarah hangs back. She falls into Chuck's lap. She kisses him and smooths his hair. "Mr. Bartowski, I'm very proud of you. You handled Casey so well. I remember the days when you were terrified of him, and he pushed you around."
Chuck shrugs, "He let you guys hold him down. There's no way he was going to take a chance on hurting Alex. I imagine I'll be worse than him when we have our kids."
Sarah smiles, "I wouldn't want or expect anything less. Our kids are going to have the best dad ever. I'll let you get to work. I'm going to order you something special for lunch. I'll miss you. One o'clock is so long from now."
You don't have to leave you can stay and watch me review Maggie's code."
Sarah fakes a yawn, "Wow that sounds interesting. But it wouldn't be fair to the other partners who aren't here to watch. Plus, my boss is a real monster, he's been giving me grief for slacking off and drinking on the job."
"Ouch, he sounds like a jerk, but I'll bet he's generous."
Sarah kisses him, "Oh he is, especially in bed. I just hope my husband doesn't find out. I'll see you soon Boss." Sarah heads out the door as Chuck dives into the files received from Maggie Mae.
One o'clock, there's a knock at the door. Chuck looks up, "Come in."
Casey walks in and takes his usual seat. "Well played nerd. You knew I wouldn't hurt Alex. New Bartowski went to get our lunches."
The door opens and Alex and Morgan walk in. Morgan sits, "Where's Sarah I'm starving."
"Jeez, Alex, how do you fill that bottomless pit? If you didn't have kids, I would think he's all stomach."
Morgan smiles, "Wow, thanks Dad, you acknowledge they're my kids. That's a first."
Everyone is laughing when Sarah walks in carrying two bags. "What's so funny? what'd I miss?"
"Casey just admitted that MJ and LJ are Morgan's kids."
"Hey! How can, I be sure? There's no real proof, neither of them are big footed, hairy, hobbits."
They all laugh as Sarah hands out the sandwiches, chips, and drinks.
Chuck unwraps his sandwich and takes a bite, "Wow, this is so good, it tastes just like…"
Sarah interrupts him, "Like the Chuck? Turkey, Muenster cheese, Egg bread, Grilled."
Chuck takes a big bite, "But you said I could never have one again."
Sarah smiles, "I did, but you've been working so hard you deserved something special. I said hi to Lou for you. She admired my engagement ring and wedding band. She said hi back."
Casey whistles, "Remind me to never piss off new Bartowski, she hits below the belt."
Chuck bites into his sandwich, "Thanks Hon, you're the best, a little mean with the jealousy, but the best. Okay, I've reviewed Maggie Mae's coding, she's good. Her algorithm was spot on. The coding was concise and efficient. She could learn a little finesse, but she's damn good. I want to make her a VP."
Casey shrugs and bites into his sandwich. "I have no idea what you're talking about." Alex and Morgan shrug as well.
Sarah takes a bite of her sandwich. "Chuck, you know what's best in this area."
Chuck laughs, "I'll take this as a unanimous yea vote."
Chuck finishes up his lunch and drops the trash in the waste basket. "Okay everyone done, ready for Beckman. I had Mrs. S. set up a phone appointment for two thirty our time. That means that it's five thirty her time. She could be grumpy. Alex, I hate to do this to you. We'll need to discuss classified info for a brief time. You don't have a need to know. The good news is you'll have Morgan and Gretchen for company."
Morgan looks up, "Huh, me too?"
Sorry Buddy, you don't have need to know."
As they walk towards the door Alex revels in the moment, "Hah, now you know how it feels Mr. 'I have clearance.'"
The remaining members laugh as Chuck pushes the button to lockdown the office.
Chuck pushes the speed dial button. The phone rings once. "Chuck, right on time. I appreciate your punctuality." Everyone in the office gets a puzzled look on their face.
Chuck responds hesitantly, "Diane?"
"Who else would it be, you called my private line?"
Chuck is at a loss, "You sound good, Diane, how are you?"
"I'm good, glad to hear from you."
"Diane you're on speaker, all the partners are here, except Morgan."
"Hi guys, how are you all? Please tell Mr. Grimes I said hello."
Sarah asks, "Diane are you okay?"
"I'm great Sarah, happy to hear your voice."
Casey growls, "Beckman, what the hell is going on? Is someone holding a gun on you?"
"Don't be ridiculous John, I'm in the White House."
Casey jumps up, "John, she called me John. That's it. I'm calling The Secret Service. The White House has been taken."
Beckman yells out, "Casey relax, the President ordered me to be nice to you. He suggested I might need to learn to speak penguin if I pissed you off again Sarah. That man is terrified of his wife. Threatening to call off the wedding really got his attention."
Everyone laughs, Chuck calms down, "You're fine Diane, we're just not used to it. Feel free to be you, we won't tell."
"Whew, thanks. For a second there I thought I was going to strain something.
Sincerely, How's my A team?"
Sarah answers, "We're good, but Chuck is working too much. He's working on tracking down Ryker, training a new cyber expert, setting up a foundation, an in-house medical clinic, and a new training program. Thank you for looking after our family in Chicago, they said your people were very nice."
"You're welcome. You're all important to us, to me. I must admit an appointment to talk, not an emergency call, caught me a little by surprise."
Chuck let's out a brief laugh. "I guess we're even then. Diane, we have a couple of things to discuss. Everyone here is Team Bartowski, and my office is secure."
"Okay Chuck, you have my undivided attention, what's up?"
"Well like Sarah told you I have a very full plate. I won't be able to look at your servers for some time. I do have a VP who's incredibly sharp. I'm training her to take over our Cyber Division to free me up. She's been vetted and I can have her in DC quickly."
They can hear Beckman groan. "The President will not be happy. He trusts you, Chuck."
"I get that, and I appreciate your trust in me. However, consider your initial reaction. Thinking I might be the hacker. Having someone else look into this might be a good idea. It keeps our and your hands clean. Look at it this way. If I did it, and I didn't, letting me in gives me an opportunity to cover my tracks."
"Chuck. we're talking about intersect files. Nobody has clearance for that."
"Well, you didn't tell me which files before. But didn't you say all the files were wiped, that there wasn't a trace left?"
"Okay, your logic is sound, I'll run it past the boss. Anything else you want to aggravate my ulcer with?"
"We're ready to complete those contracts, but your people are holding things up. If I had been involved, you would probably still have your files."
"That's probably true, but Chuck, you knew taking on Carina Miller would be problematic."
Sarah steps in, "Diane, her name is Gretchen Fager. She's given up all covers and Chuck had an intense training session with her. We believe she's ready and capable to be a team member."
"What kind of training session could get the attention of a wild card like her?"
Casey interjects. "Chuck beat the crap out of her."
There's silence on the other end, "I think we have a bad connection. Did you say Chuck Bartowski beat the crap out of…a woman?"
Sarah steps over and puts her hand on Chuck's shoulder. "He isn't happy about it Diane. But Gretchen understands that he did what she needed, and she thanked him."
Chuck sighs, "How do we get past this obstacle Diane?"
"Would she be willing to be screened by my office?"
"Let's ask her. Sarah, would you invite the others in Hon? Diane I'm opening up the office no classified discussions."
Chuck presses the button, and the office opens up. Sarah goes to the door and invites the three-waiting people in. She closes the door.
"General Beckman we're joined by Morgan and Alex Grimes, and Gretchen Fager, former cover as Carina Miller."
Chuck points to chair in front of him Gretchen moves over on her crutches and sits in it. Morgan and Alex sit on the couch along the side wall. Sarah stands next to Chuck.
"Hello Grimes's, Ms. Fager, don't believe we've had the pleasure. However, I do believe you almost got my agents killed in the past."
Sarah opens her mouth to speak. Gretchen holds up her hand to stop her. "That's correct General. I had a habit of putting others in danger to accomplish my goals."
Beckman's voice is serious. "Is there some reason I should expose people I consider family, to that kind of behavior?"
Gretchen is silent, "I agree with you General, you shouldn't."
"I see. Then why are we having this discussion?"
"Because I wouldn't cause or allow harm to any of the people in this room. They're the closest thing I've ever had to family. I love them and I'm grateful for what they've done for me."
"Interesting, as I understand it Mr. Bartowski gave you a severe physical reason to be angry with him."
Chuck's eyes turn down to stare at the floor. Sarah puts her hand on his shoulder.
"Chuck Bartowski is the finest man I know. He did absolutely nothing to harm me. He rescued me and I am nothing but grateful."
"Tell me Ms. Fager are you willing to spend some time with an agency psychiatrist?"
"Whatever it takes General. This is my home now. I have no intention of leaving."
"Very well, be prepared to be probed and inspected. I'm going to have every alphabet agency at my disposal dig into you. Be forewarned, you go back on your word and harm any of those fine people you'll find yourself having a Cuban vacation. I will personally make sure you are not having fun.
Chuck I'll have Dr. Dreyfus contact you to set up an appointment for her. I'll get back to you as soon as I've spoken to the President on that other issue."
The line goes quiet, and the office is the same. Gretchen looks around at all the faces. "You seem to have friends in high places. It's funny, I couldn't conceive of loyalty like that before. Now I want it more than anything. I know what you're all risking for me. I don't have words to say how I feel." Everyone in the office looks at Gretchen and smiles.
Chuck claps his hands to bring everyone back into the room. "Okay folks I have work to do. I believe you all do as well. Enough with the lady feelings. So out, go to work. Morgan, make sure those contracts are ready. I have no doubt we'll be getting them signed soon.
Gretchen, I want that training program up and running by the time you're walking on your own. I have a few candidates in mind. Morgan and Alex will be your test cases. I may throw Mrs. Sawyer in to make it hard on you. Now, all of you, go away, I have to call Remy and let him know that he's about to lose his cyber expert for a while.
A/N I've been told this is okay but not near my best. I apologize. I'm doing the best I can. I'm dealing with a lot of distraction. That's not an excuse. It's a dilemma. I can do what I can or make everyone wait for I don't know how long. I hope you're entertained some. LR
