The distraught woman wrung the handkerchief Ianto had given her between her hands, twisting the fabric to the point where he was sure it would tear. Good thing he bought them cheap, wholesale, just for moments like this.
"It was awful!" she was saying, looking up at him from teary eyes. Her heavy makeup was smudged; obviously not waterproof. "It came out of nowhere, a hideous monster! I thought I was going to die!"
Actually, the poor alien, a Strood from Istrooya, was a highly intelligent and completely harmless being. Okay, so it was also seven feet tall, its skin was red with black stripes, and it had horns, making it look somewhat demonic, but it wouldn't have hurt her. The Rift had plucked it from its homeworld, dumping it in Cardiff; it had only been trying to find out where it was.
"You're quite safe now," Ianto assured her. "He wasn't a monster, just an opportunistic mugger, trying to scare unaccompanied women into giving up their valuables. Here, have some tea; it's really the best treatment for the shock you've had."
"Thank you." She accepted the cup, sipping the retcon-laced tea.
Ianto hated lying, but some lies were necessary.
