After losing Lisa, Ianto was broken inside. He couldn't imagine ever being happy again. All he felt was grief for everything he'd lost, guilt over the deaths he'd inadvertently caused, and shame because he'd betrayed the people he'd been working with for months and had almost got them killed or converted. Through his blind determination to save the woman he loved, he might easily have doomed the entire planet. It didn't bear thinking about.
He'd fully expected to be executed for his crime, and part of him might have welcomed death, but that would have been too easy. His punishment had been to live with what he'd done, trying to make amends and redeem himself in the eyes of his colleagues.
Surprisingly, it was Jack, the man who was chiefly responsible for putting an end to the monster Lisa had become, who helped Ianto pick up the shattered fragments of his life. Jack who had shown him kindness and compassion he was sure he didn't deserve, Jack who had given him a new purpose, something and someone to live for.
After Lisa, Ianto had been so sure that he could never find love again, but Jack had proved him wrong.
