There are some forms of alien activity even MIK turns a blind eye to. The truly alien activity between Chupataro and Ohdo Yuhi, for instance.
Chapter 99: Say My Name
"Pu-puku-pu! Victory is mine, epo!" Epoch paraded her "W" sign around.
"Ahh!" Vanas stretched his tentacles as if just getting up. "I never doubted it, vanas."
"Why, chupa?"
"Epo?"
"Vanas is a Chapeau alien, chupa! There's no way he wouldn't have seen this outcome, chupa! All the cards you'd play…All the cards he'd play…He saw every turn of the Duel before the first draw, cabra!"
Damas' prophecies were phony prophecies. Conversely, Vanas' prophecies didn't (to pilfer Yuhi's term) suck.
"So he knew he'd lose, epo?"
"Why, chupa? Why did you go out of your way to duel Epoch when you saw you'd lose, Vanas?"
"Chupataro. This Rush Duel was for your benefit, vanas."
"For Chupa's benefit, chupa?"
"Let's clear up a misconception, Chupataro: I've already forgiven you for abandoning me two years ago."
"You have, chupa?"
"Yes, vanas. I saw you'd knock me off your head!"
"Then why didn't you stop Chupa, chupa?"
"It was the correct call, vanas. To make room for Ohdo Yuhi."
"Epo-po? He let himself get thrown out on purpose, epo?"
"I did it for my friend."
"Vaanaas!" Chupataro expelled that precious spice the Worn (as a species) just loved licking up.
"You've conditioned yourself to see the worst in others, vanas. To assume the worst. And given what you've been through – the squalid seclusion I found you in and shepherded you out of – rightfully so, perhaps. But those near and dear to you are more generous than you give them credit for, Chupataro. This is the worldview I wanted you to see."
"And me? What about me, epo?"
"You were in my vision by circumstance. By the way, this is yours. It was lodged between the pulleys of a conveyor belt, vanas."
"A gear, chupa?"
"My heirloom gear! I-I wasn't afraid Alfred would lecture me on going out when I'm not supposed to or anything, epo!"
…
One week later. A sunset worthy of George Jersey's jersey. A dog walker with a dog on a leash. A boy and a girl flicking a flying disc.
"Where's Damamu anyway, chupa?" Chupataro walked three sets of footprints ahead of Yuhi on the beach.
"Stakin' out the vending machine corner. Yuga's bound to come by. Didja know the udon vending machine is owned by the family of a talkin' hill myna who does movies? Manya's sure connected!"
"You left our two-year-old child unattended, chupa?"
"Damamu'll be fine! When's the last time we got a minute to ourselves?"
This was prior to Damamu deviating from Yuhi's assigned task out of forgetfulness, upsetting and embarrassing him.
Chupataro stopped, turned, and caught Yuhi by his arms. "Chupa forgets sometimes it wasn't always the three of us, cabra."
"I'd like to hear that long story now."
"Well, first of all, it's not long, chupa!"
"I thought so. Lyin's as easy as breathin' for ya, huh?"
"Sorry, chupa."
"I didn't say it to make ya feel bad."
"Chu?"
"That note I found tellin' ya to go to the dump. Who was it from? Can ya tell me now?"
Chupataro owned up to Yuhi about Vanas, including Vanas' premonition of their relationship, what really went down the day of his arrest at Mutsuba Heavy Machinery Garbage Collection Site #8, the recent Duel there, and Vanas' news he'd rehomed with a new host. Chupataro left out it was Epoch who duelled though, since the less people who could testify to Alfred she snuck out to dig through rubbish, the better! (IDIOT!)
"So that's how ya knew about Chapeau aliens!"
"Can you forgive Chupataro, chupa? Again, chupa?"
"What're you, a broken record? I already have! I pre-forgive ya for a lot of things, y'know?"
"Why do you, chupa?"
"Cuz even when you were lyin' to me, my gut told me ya loved me, even if you weren't ready to admit it yet. I get that you're gonna keep lyin' to me from time to time. Just…I don't wantcha to feel bad if ya hafta."
So this is what Vanas meant by Chupa not giving others more credit, chupa! Yuhi, he…He knows Chupa lied and isn't holding it against Chupa, cabra!
"I didn't believe for a second ya seriously had my best interests at heart during our first date. Ya didn't. But as time went on…As I got to know ya more…"
Yuhi isn't the weak human Chupa thought he was when Chupa met him, chupa. He's like everyone's saviour, chupa. He's like…Yudias?
I was sure, I told myself. I'm sure I'll start forgettin' those things, little by little. The lies, big or small, he told me. The problem of the Velgearians' shrinking lifespan was obviously colouring Yuhi's emotional disposition.
Chupataro pulled back on the levers, tightening his robot's grip.
"And then when ya said my name…When ya really said it…I knew the lies didn't matter to me anymore. Because ya finally –"
"Chu…SORRY! YUHI!"
"Dummy. I told ya I forgive ya," Yuhi laughed and cried at the same time.
"Chu."
Apparently, that's called loneliness.
The wind over the ocean was freezing. The cold even searched deep into Chupataro's robot, his heater couldn't compensate.
Even so…
"Chupataro, can we be like this a little longer?"
"If you – If you want, Yuhi. But let's have a roll in the warm wool when we get back, chupa."
"Yeah…" Yuhi agreed, then decided it wasn't necessary. "I don't want to."
"Chuchuchu," Chupataro laughed. "Which is it, chupa?"
"I don't want to."
"What do you want to do, chupa?"
Can't say goodbye.
Still drifting with the echoes.
What Yuhi had was enough.
I wanted…I want to be with Chupataro, like he wanted to be with me.
