Chapter 101: Xiphos' Sadness

This was not a mass for the dead.

In the trenches, under sustained enemy fire and his sword not in his hand, Yudias thought he was finished. At that time, the hand of his superior officer reached out to him, and pulled him to the planet's surface. The world around them was ablaze, yet in the Velgearians' darkest hour was when Yudias saw it.

Zuwijo's smile.

Strong, towering, and beloved by everyone, Zuwijo pulled him back up. His smile gave Yudias the fortitude to keep fighting.

"I will hold them back. Go on ahead."

"But –"

"My Gavil Charger is no longer of use! You must go forth, Yudias! Go, and end this battle!"

Zuwijo had died before. During the war. Then too, Yudias persuaded himself to trust the propaganda of the Velgearian war machine. That Zuwijo zir Velgear was merely missing in action. Not dead.

He'd quoted the false rumours to Yuamu and Yuhi, after Zuwijo's miraculous return.

And Zuwijo had died a second time, effaced by The*Luge.

But this time…

This time…

Zuwijo didn't respawn, a shirt, and exit the Relic. The Go Rush Yu.

The reverie flowed like water from the Velgearian fountain of souls and like Yudias' tears, washing over Yudias' galaxy of a soul.

He couldn't forget. However much the reminiscences hurt, he would not consign them to oblivion and willful amnesia. The Velgearians may have begun as tabula rasa, but Yudias Velgear carried the weight of his people's collective honour and hopes. And as Zuwijo instilled in him so eloquently, it was up to Yudias to carry those feelings forward.

Yudias! Yudias! Yudias! Yudias! his countrymen's cheers surrounded him in the void. Softer, but imperishable as they'd once been.

They were twinkling. Dazzling.

Yudias' eyes weren't fooling him. He saw Muda in his Duel with Zuwijo. The Velgear Cluster's soldiers were indeed with him in spirit.

"Yudias? Yudias?" Yuhi's voice rose through the ovation.

Sadness hung over UTS.

It hung over all Mutsuba Town.

"Yudias, I –" Yuhi tried to say something. Anything. He and Yuamu brooded over bringing in Nyandestar, Shewbahha, and Zaion to speak to Yudias, but Tazaki made the right choice, advising the twins against it. Of the three, only Shewbahha's experience of losing his entire race was permanent, and the isolation had fostered morbid, morose attitudes in the Dragonbuster on being the last of his species.

Saddling Yudias with any more talk of extinction would be cruel.

"My eternal friend. Cherish Yuhi," Yudias told Chupataro, rather than address the emptiness he was suffering.

Tremolo's grounds for duelling Chupataro had been fake, and the Super Maximum Tremolo Girls confirmed it. Chupataro thought Tremolo had gotten as bad as Manabu (as if being the black mark on the Sogetsu Style wasn't enough), but…

"You really think I'd be inhuman enough to say the Velgearians aren't real? It's devastating what happened to them. Devastating. Don't ever lump me in with Manabu. Never ever! No one is a bigger di –"

You get the idea.

Closer than anyone to witness the Chupataro that maxed out all his stats for Yuhi, Tremolo duelled Chupataro to evoke his memories of his time with the Sevens, so Chupataro could step into that role again. Just as the Invincible Tremy protected his cuties (and Okeabyss, by extension), Chupataro needed to rediscover his resolve and do what he needed to do for Yuhi and Damamu.

Yuhi and Chupataro sat Damamu down and had a sedate discussion regarding death, though aside from instinctual tears, Damamu wasn't as gravely affected by watching Zuwijo and Dinois meet their ends as Yuhi and Chupataro suspected.

Yuhi kept his own tears down, lying under Chupataro's robot's arm for one wordless afternoon in Chupataro's apartment.

Yuamu ran the company, while Purisaki sewed.

Asaka deconstructed what she could have done differently, while Tazaki mourned the Dudi Ducasse and 8.88 million Velgearians who'd disappeared.

Rovian composed a threnody, and Yuna listened from a distance.

MIK continued analyzing Kuaidul's last secret.

Mitsuko made sanshoku dango, which Goalko-neesan promptly ate, since she loved the green dango at the bottom of each skewer.

Yuga…began his move.

And Yudias…

"Zuwijo? You are already awake?"

The Supreme Commander, bare-chested from his never-night with Yudias on Achrady VII, looked over at Yudias with a smile.

"It's that part of you, Yudias…Since long ago, I have always –"

The flower field.

Zuwijo suffered great emptiness upon learning the truth about the Velgearians. Yet down that unlit avenue fate/the Creator/Kuaidul damned him to walk, there was a fork. And at that fork in the road was a guide: Yudias, his hand outstretched.

Yudias reached out to him, and pulled him out of his dark hole. And with Kuaidul's denouement came the revelation Zuwijo was mortal and finite.

He could die, therefore he was living. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Zuwijo was free. Free to truly stand on his own two feet, ready his Disk, and duel Yudias one more time in the short time he had left.

"From the expanse of empty sky, I call forth…"

"As the ship of memories swirls across the skies of oblivion…"

"A wandering…warrior's regrets."

"The stars and planets swirling through the heavens call upon the name hidden in their chests!"

"But this is not a mass for the dead!"

"Take flight! Galactica Oblivion!"

"Voidvelgr…Requiem…Special Summon!"

"It is that part of you, Zuwijo. Since long ago, that part of you, everything about you…I have always loved."

The clouds…

"I want to see the best of you. In the end, you knew peace and the joy of life."

They were shaped like Zuwijo.

"You smiled."
