Hey all! If you are still reading thank you 😊 I am actually having so much fun writing this! Again please let me know your thoughts! Also as a side note, I edited my original chapter 11 because it wasn't even close to something I was happy with for the story. So have a read and let me know what you think! Happy belated easter/public holiday weekend 😊
I open my eyes to bright blinding lights and automatically close them again, prepared for pain to shoot through my head. When no pain comes, I dare to open my eyes again. It takes a while for my eyes to adjust to light, but I manage to make out a small room with a chair in the corner. I think there is someone in the chair, but I can't imagine who it would be, unless, no they wouldn't have come all this way? How would have they even know?
I sit up quickly, but a wave of intense head rush floods my brain and forces me down to the bed with a moan. The figure in the corner quickly comes towards me. Thankfully as the blur beings to subside I find Charlie's bushy haired moustache looking over me.
"Hey don't push yourself kid", he says.
"I'm fine honestly", I say not daring to try and sit up again, "hopefully the bump on the head was enough to knock some sense into me". Thankfully he lets out a small chuckle releasing the worry on his face, but not his eyes.
"Something tells me it would take more than an out-of-control van", he grumbles. Before I can respond the door swings open and in walks a vampire with slick back blonde hair who I have no doubt is Dr Cullen.
"Ah Chief, the nurses told me you were up here", he says, his voice lighter than air, but with a humbleness the balance it out.
"Carlilse", said Charlie with a nod, no explanation as to why he is here, why he even cares. I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't know what I have done to receive special treatment from the chief of police.
"What seems to be the issue?". Dr Cullen walks over to my chart and looks to over, but I would bet my left kidney he knows more about my health than I do even without the chart. Hang on how much blood does a kidney have? Would he eat it himself or give it to a patient in need. At least one is a good cause.
As I weigh up the terms of my bet he pulls out a torch from his coat pocket and raises it to my eye blinding me instantly. His finger soon follows, and I am made to feel like a cat with a red laser. I am drawn to his shadowed movements just so I can get a moments relief from the overwhelming brightness.
"Well, it seems Isabella you have suffered a small head injury the from sudden impact but otherwise it seems that you will be just fine after a few says rest. I do recommend regular check-ups every couple of hours through the night but otherwise you should be back on your feet after the weekend. I would like you to come back in next Friday however just so I can make sure there are no lasting issues", the Doctor lowers the torch and I find my vision flooded with black dots where the light was. How can the dots be light and dark at the same time?
"Isabella, I understand you have just moved to town, do you have anyone who can check up on you during the night?", the Doctor asks. If he is half as nosey as the rest of his coven, he knows for a fact that I don't.
"I can organise the front desk of the motel to call me every couple of hours. If I don't answer they can call an ambulance", I say with a shrug, not wanting the vampire to think I am left unprotected. As the black dots begin to fade, I see both men looking at me with a mix of horror and concern.
"Excuse me Isabella, I don't believe it is my place but-", starts the Doctor before Charlie cuts him off.
"You will be staying with me", he orders, "I have a spare bedroom you can stay in". I start to argue but am cut off by a sharp look from the chief.
"That wasn't a question. Once you are better you can go back to the motel, but until then you are staying where someone can keep an eye out for you", he says. I start to protest again but the Doctor only claps his hands together.
"Excellent! Chief I will bring you Isabella's discharge papers so you can sign her out into your care. Isabella if you experience any light headedness or nausea lasting longer than an hour I want you to call me, the Chief has my number and-". The Doctor is cut off as a nurse enters the room.
"Sorry Dr Cullen, but two of your children have come to see you. They say its urgent", says the nurse.
"Thank you Jean, I will come see them now. Excuse me", he says pardoning himself from the room. The nurse follows on his heels leaving me alone with Charlie.
"Why?", is all I can ask.
"Because once you chose to live here you came under my protection. I would do the same for anyone else in this town if they needed it", he says. I want to argue, go kicking and screaming but looking up at his brown eyes, I see nothing but concern.
"You know you don't have to do this? I can take care of myself", I sigh.
"You got knocked on the head, I'm sorry but you wouldn't know how to take care of yourself if it, well if it hit you on the head", he says. I can't help but let out a laugh.
"Thanks Charlie", I say under my breath. He gives a small nod in response rather than let this turn into some mushy scene.
The nurse returns and gives Charlie the paperwork for my discharge. Hmm no Carlise. I wonder what the others wanted.
"Now I called the number on your file, but it went to voice mail. You might want to tell your folks or whoever's behind the number that you're ok", he says. I let out an internal sigh of relief. I had put my emergency contact as my number just in case something like this happened. I didn't need Father coming to pull me out of here over a slight provocation.
"Uh I better call them back", I say jumping off the bed with a foolish speed. My head starts to spin as I fall back against the bed. Charlie drops the clip board and rushes to my side, but I hold him back with a hand.
"I'm ok. Head rush that's all", I say. He slowly backs towards the chair as I raise myself up right.
"You ok?", he asks.
"I'm all good", I say. I take a deep breath and move towards the door and out into the white hallway. I pull out my phone and for a moment I consider calling Father, I miss his voice more than I thought I would. I pull up the contacts list and as my thumb hovers over his name I hear a growl from down the hall.
Out of instinct I push myself against the nearest wall, waiting for any sign of chaos. As a nurse rounds the corner, I figure that there is at the very least no immediate danger. I slide against the wall and peak around the corner but pull myself back once I see what is going on.
I build up my courage and look back around the corner and find Carlise arguing with Edward and Rosalie. Well other way around actually, Carlise is listening with complete calmness while Rosalie and Edward argue at him.
"We are exposed, we can't stay here", hisses Edward.
"No one saw a thing Edward", growled Rosalie.
"Edward is that true? Could you hear anything from the people around?", asks Carlise.
"No", he admits, "they were all to occupied by the crash, but she would have noticed and that is all Aro needs". The name sends a chill down my spine causing me to stumble against the wall, exposing myself to the vampires. The three turn to look at me, Carlisle's eyes are the only warmth in the icy tundra.
"Uhh can I talk to you?", I ask say nodding towards Rosalie.
"I think we should talk elsewhere", Carlise suggests to Edward. Instead of following the suggestion Edward comes towards me while Rosalie stares with onyx eyes before turning and storming down the corridor. With a disapproving look towards the bronze haired vampire, Carlise quickly follows her out.
"How are you feeling?", he asks with a smile, suspicion still heavy in his eyes.
"Fine", I say.
"You took a nasty bump to the head, you should be resting", he says.
"It would have been worse if Rosalie hadn't been there", his eyes flash black for only a moment before he clears his throat to try and return to normal.
"Lucky she was standing near you", he says, that all too familiar smirk lines his face as if he is trying to charm his way out of the shit show this is becoming.
"Umm no? She was standing at the other end of the car park talking to the big one of you", I say. I know I shouldn't argue back, he is giving me a way out as much as he is making his own but it's that stupid smirk!
"Isabella, you must have hit your head harder than Carlislie realised", he says feigning concern. He raises his hand as if to inspect the damage, but I duck out of the way, causing a tingle of headrush to ache at the base of my skull.
"I know what I saw Edward and since you were probably in the bathroom fixing whatever you call your hair or whatever you were doing, I can safely say I trust my version over yours", I say. He instinctively moves to raise his hand to his hair but pulls back last minute.
"No one would even believe you if you told", he growled.
"You seriously think I was planning on telling someone? She saved my life, that means something to me you thick headed moron", I say growling back. He looks taken aback for a moment but not before his anger settles back in.
"Good. You might want to remember that when you go back to play with the mutts on the reservation", he snarls. I can feel my blood boiling over, I know this is doing nothing to stop the pain shooting through my head but I can't stop myself.
"Excuse me? What the hell did you just call them?". My yelling is enough to bring Charlie from the room to see what the fuss is about.
"Everything ok here?", he asks me.
"Fine I was just leaving", says Edward as he turns and storms off. After he is gone Charlie looks to me asking for an explanation.
"It's fine, let's just get out of here", I sigh. Charlie looks like he wants to ask more questions but instead starts to finalise the paperwork. He asks me all the questions he needs to fill in the blanks but when it comes to my last name, I start to say my real name but remember my school papers are filled out under a different name.
"Uh Swan", I say instead, realising at the same time the chief does.
"You're kidding right?", he asks.
"That's the name my family gave me", I say, skirting around the truth. Charlie just lets out a little laugh.
"I'll be dammed", he mutters to himself.
