Fictitious Drivel

This just happens to be the start of a fic that I wanted to write about Neji and an OC named Kairi. I am actively working on it as well as female Naruto narrative. Please let me know your thoughts on them. They have not been beta'd. Mostly these were just drivel for my mental health, it kinda sucks y'know? I don't care if they're shit or great right now, just if they're readable, digestable at least.

Maybe they are. Maybe they aren't. Who knows.

Trigger warning: content includes mention of blood, possible self harm, violence, PTSD, and mental illness.

Neji:

Neji had never felt more desperate to survive. The Fourth Shinobi War was quickly becoming a burial ground for the Allied forces. Whatever life had thrown at him he had survived until now, but not this. Not when Hinata and Naruto, the man he could call Hokage and follow without regret, were right there. They were there. He was too far away, too far to save them from the volley hailing down on them like bullets from a furious heaven. He could do it. He could get there. Legs screaming, joints like rubber bands close to snapping, he ran. He would get there, he had to get there!

And he did.

His fingertips brushed by an orange cloak as he forced his body in front of them. A lock of Hinata's silken purple hair tickled his peripherals and he knew he had done it. Wood splintered into his collarbone with a sickening crunch. Ah, he thought, this hurts less than I thought dying would. He could hear Hinata behind him. Neji felt numb, his chest burned and all he could think was "she's alive. They're alive." There was a ringing in his ears like something had exploded again.

Before the spike could drive any further into his body a burning blast pushed the entire volley into the wind like toothpicks in a hurricane. A female shinobi riding a mass of black fur suddenly took up his entire vision. A hand was shoved unceremoniously into the gaping hole in his flesh rubbing a burning liquid that clung to the chunks in his shoulder. He looked up. There, a leaf headband and two tear-like Inuzuka fangs by her eyes. Blue eyes. His vision was fading, was that screaming? He murmured a thank you to whoever this was, whoever had this incredibly soft bed for him to die on.

"Fuck! If you're going to die on me at least buy me dinner first. Kami!" She was screaming. Cursing at him. Neji couldn't help the pained rasp that was supposed to be a laugh from escaping him. Her eyes were so blue. Like the sea. He reached out searching for the cobalt, for anything really to touch. He grazed her cheek.

"I'd like that" he could hear himself saying. He was coughing then. That's never good. He couldn't feel her cheek. Couldn't feel his fingers. Neji felt the panic setting in, felt the way his throat gurgled around a liquid. Then he was falling and the last thing he saw before Neji passed from this world were blue eyes and hands. So many hands. Medic nin hands, tearing through his perfectly good vest. Bother. He quite liked that vest.

Kairi:

Everything hurt. Every fucking thing hurt. Kairi had never been in a battle this large. She had never wanted to be here. But by Kami she had to be, the medic nins needed someone capable enough to take their most wounded from the field for immediate attention. The tide of the battle had turned, not in their favor, and they needed every shinobi they could get their hands on. It had been chaos, utter chaos. This most recent round Kairi and her ninken, Kaiyo, had pulled a jonin from being demolished by a massive foot and then another two from what looked like a wind release gone wrong. Then she saw it. A pocket in the battle. There! Naruto and what looked like Hinata were about to be skewered. Her friends—her best friends! A body flew past her, running towards them. She couldn't think, her lips quivered and she choked out the only words she had left– "Divine Wind Jutsu!" and felt what little chakra reserves she had left burn out of her coils. She used her last altered explosive tags and twisted them into the wind, obliterating some of the spikes threatening to murder her friends.

And then she was running. With a grunt Kairi grunt covered the distance she needed to reach them. To reach the people she loved, the two that had to survive this hell at all costs. She had to make sure, had to ensure they survived. Instead, what she got was a hemorrhaging Hyuga man, Hinata's cousin. Barely four words from Naruto's mouth and they were gone again. Take care of him. Take care of him? Take care of him? What about them? They had almost died! She swallowed. The panic stuck to her throat like glue on cheap paper, barely contained behind the grimy flesh.

She nodded at Naruto and Hinata before grimly shoving cauterizing gel on the Hyuga's gaping wound and hurling him onto Kaiyo's back. Kairi knew that if she stayed, if she went after them, she would just be a liability. The last thing they needed right now was another corpse to decorate this wasteland. She barely had time to grab onto the ninken before he was bounding through the battlefield again, to the med tent. Everyone was fighting, blood and bodies lay spattered across the ground. A Kunai clipped her leg as they rounded a corner. She snarled and felt her claws pull at the gummy flesh of an eye in passing. Like popping bloody grapes. She didn't bother stopping to finish whoever it was. The man on Kaiyo's back was dying. The battlefield was carnage, this was hell she was sure of it. God had left them and this was their punishment for murder in the name of their villages.

Kairi looked down at the Hyuga, he was fading fast his eyes fluttering vaguely over her face. "Fuck! If you're going to die on me at least buy me dinner first. Kami! You stupid son of a bitch you ran right into that stake! You beautiful stupid bastard, you saved them but you're dying. You're dying" She felt like she was going to die herself. Something caught in her throat as she looked at him.

She barely caught his hand as it grazed her cheek.

"I'd like that" he muttered before blood started to pool up from his throat.

"Shut up idiot! Don't speak, don't speak. We'll get you home. It'll be okay. I promise! God please just stop trying to talk" Kairi was crying. Tears started to stream down her face and it wasn't soon enough that they reached the med tent and she hauled his body onto a stretcher. Her voice felt like sandpaper against her ears as she screamed for a medic until a team came running. She stumbled, knees buckling under her weight as she tumbled to the ground. Kairi saw spots dancing across her vision before someone grabbed her and pulled her into the med tent. A few choice curse words later and Kairi was lost in a sea of darkness, the sound of death an echo into a nightmare she prayed would end.
