Chapter 4: The Silent Town

"Is... is that him?" One person muttered.

"I didn't think he was real." Another said.

"What a monster."

He could hear it all around him. Banging in his eardrums never stopping like an endless drone.

"They say he has voices. That he kills because of them."

The tall man stayed quiet. He didn't want to scare them, but didn't want to seem agitated. They passed old houses, battered and bruised from past wars. There were hardly any elderly, too many were either lost to disease or war. War was terrible. War took loved ones away. It forced people to go against each other even if they didn't want to.

"Hey." A small boy was standing in front of him. "Hey! Stop."

He put down the cart. "What?" His voice boomed.

"You're scaring everyone. Could you turn around? My mother would greatly appreciate it."

"I'm sorry, boy but I need to get through."

"No!" He held his hands out.

The boy was up to his knees. He could easily walk straight through him and trample him. But the tall man wasn't that kind of person.

"I won't let you... I won't let you through."

"I must get to the monster territory. This is the only path through. I know you may want to do the right thing for your town but why pick me out of the crowd?" He told him. "Is it my tusks? Is it the way that I look?" He started to lean down. Getting closer and closer to the boy.

"Billy! Billy, please get over here. The man would like to get through." Someone yelled from a balcony.

"But mum! He's scaring the rest of the town." The boy yelled to his mother.

"Billy!" She shouted changing her tone.

"Okay, okay." He moaned, walking slowly over to his mother, his eyes at the floor.

'S-she called me man. She didn't think of me as a monster.'

Tears began to pour from his eyes, but he quickly wiped them away. He took a deep breath in, picked up the cart and continued on.

Just as they were on the edge of town, Phil perked up, "I didn't realise they treat-"

"Keep yourself quiet, human." The man quickly cut him off.

"But I-"

"Keep quiet, you speaking makes this look even more suspicious than it already is." He said, annoyed.

Phil fell silent.

They passed under the gate and then into the forest beyond. They didn't even offer to let them stay.

Ring. Ring.

In the distance, they could hear a bell. They couldn't tell where it was. It could've been away from the path. The man put the cart down.

Rustle. Rustle.

The man stared into the darkness of the trees. Something was watching them. Suddenly a dark shadow lunged at him, knocking him to the ground...
