CHAPTER 3

Hi y'all.

Looks like the responses are just piling in. I think for an amateur writer, I am doing pretty well. But there's a lot more to come, and I have a lot more to learn.

I have considered everything you guys have said in the reviews. I agree with you. Sarah was made to look very bad in this section of the show. I am looking to fix it, but I have a feeling it is going to get worse before it gets better. Chuck is going to face a lot of problems before he gets his happy ending with Sarah. But Charah is going to be my endgame so no worries folks.

I also agree that keeping up with Shaw is going to be a bother, but like I said, I am just letting my brain take over the controls, and let my fingers do their job. Hopefully, it will turn out ok.

A shout-out to Karen who left a rather lengthy review. I read your thoughts and I have to agree. In the series, Sarah was starting to once again warm up to him. She was still in love with him no matter what had happened. I remember when Chuck suggested that they bail Casey out of lockup in the 10th episode, Sarah was very happy that he would do so for him. When Chuck said, "Sarah, its Casey" her smile was very genuine. I also agree with your latest review. Sarah was moving towards the inevitable reunion with Chuck. But this story is a different ball game altogether. This one started off with a completely new angle, so I am hoping to give you guys a fresh perspective. And to make sure Sarah really grows into her love for Chuck.

What I think is that for Chuck to really mature into a good spy, he needs to take of the training wheels known as Sarah Walker. While he has the capability to be a good solo agent, Sarah coddling him did not help. Season 4 had proven that Sarah could be overprotective of him, and he needs to do this on his own to become a really competent spy.

Once again, I stress that this story is not a way to bash Sarah. It's just to show how differently Sarah could think in a situation like this. While I like to think that Sarah was more in tune with her emotions than before at this stage, she could still let her training do the work and ruin a lot of things. This is just the second possibility taking place.

This is also an opportunity to try and see a different facet of Chuck that many would not explore. I have seen a lot of stories where Chuck would become a spy, but because of his inability to kill, the CIA would waive the red test. That does not seem realistic by any means, no offense. I don't think they would do such a thing. He might not have killed anyone, but he had not matured into the spy he could be.

The only time in the entire series I had seen Chuck be a good spy, was when Sarah was poisoned by the Norseman. Chuck had even enlisted the help of Russian Special Forces, and threatened to release confidential Government secrets to the media. That takes guts. I want my Chuck to be like that but even more ruthless.

Let's start.

-Break-

General Diane Beckman was usually not one to get tangled up in emotions. As a part of the American Intelligence community for more than three decades, she had built up immunity towards any emotion that can cause damage. But somehow, a nerd from the Buymore, named Chuck had undone every single wall she had put up. When he was first introduced to her, she thought that he would amount to nothing, and that he would probably get her agents killed. But he had proved her wrong. He had given his all despite the questionable treatment he had received, and adapted very quickly to the demands of the job.

He was someone who was a danger to any operative. Not because of any physical aspect, but his inherent goodness drained any ruthlessness out of the agent. The best example she could think of was John Casey. The guy who was once a cold school killer (by his own admission) had been very uncomfortable when she had ordered him to terminate Chuck. At the time it had been a difficult move for her as well, but Graham was adamant that he was a danger, and she could somewhat understand it as well. She thanked whatever forces that were helping them when they got the information about the beta intersect's destruction before Casey could kill him. It was also a big weight of her shoulders that a good man would not be killed.

When he first uploaded the 2.0, she was extremely worried. After all that had happened, he once again gave himself to the US Government to be used as they see fit. But this time, he had to be trained as an agent. The 2.0 gave him special skills, and had basically made him into a readymade spy. But the intersect was affected by emotions which were basically the most devastating weakness of his. At first things were going well. He was taking to his training very well. But then something must have happened, because all of a sudden he stopped flashing. He had lost control and once he had almost mauled one of his trainers. After much deliberation, the entire operation was sacked, and Chuck was sent home. She thought about asking him what the problem was but ultimately decided against it.

After so much happening after that, Chuck had finally become the agent he was meant to be. While she was sad that another good man had been changed to one of them, they had no other option. The Ring was becoming stronger by the day, and they needed Chuck to be able to combat them effectively.

What she hoped to do was to make this mission and the rest of his career in the CIA as comfortable was possible. She owed him at least that much. That's why when he had asked for three female agents, she had used this opportunity to insert someone who could be a huge asset to them. Not because of her spy skills, but because of her people skills. While she was a good spy, she was also as normal as they could get. She was sure that June Wells would be a good match, and she was sure Chuck would see that too.

June Wells came from a good family. She had led a normal life till the age of 20, when she had seen her brother get killed during a hostage situation at the local mall. That incident had set a fire that no one could turn off till date. She was recruited right out of college, and she had excelled in her training. Not their best, but was definitely at the top somewhere. She was also very good looking, in the girl next door kind of way. She would gel with the team, and most importantly with Chuck.

Diane had done as much as she could for him. It was now upto him to overcome his current problems, and she was sure that he would do so. After all that she had seen, nothing could keep him down for long.

Unknown location

A lone computer was brightening the cabin that was so isolated in the woods that no one would be able to find it easily. There was a middle aged man sitting in front of it, looking at the screen with a heavy frown. He had shoulder length brown hair, with some white patches, brown eyes. He could not believe what he was seeing.

On the computer was the video of Chuck, fencing with Hugo Panzer in the baggage area of an aircraft. As far as he knew, Chuck did not know fencing. It did not take a genius to figure out that Chuck had undone all of his hard work.

"Goodness gracious, Charles! Why would you do that?" he moaned desperately. He did not want him to be a part of this world. This life had taken his wife away; he had to keep himself away from his children, and now his son was actively involved. Everyone thought that Chuck was like his father, well they were dead wrong. He was so very much like Mary that he was scared what would happen. He had yet to channel his inner Mary, but if he knew the CIA like he did, they would bring it into the fore front very soon.

"Well, if you are going to do this, then I am going to give you the means to do it without killing yourself in the process", he promised.

He set about making something that would make sure Charles would not lose his mind to the Intersect. It would be a late Christmas present, something that would keep his head cool and avoid the overheating effect of the Intersect.

The Governor.

With Chuck

Goodbyes were always sad. Chuck was no stranger to goodbyes. He remembered saying goodbye to Ellie and Morgan when he left for Stanford. It was a very sad moment. He remembered saying the eternal goodbye to Bryce. While they had really lost their friendship after Stanford, these last 2 years helped a good deal in regaining that friendship. Losing Bryce to the Ring was still a dark patch in his life.

He once again said goodbye to his family. He told Ellie that he had received a job in a Software company in Rome that dealt with Cyber security. She was very happy for him as evidenced by that glass shattering squeal and rib cracking hug. While she was quite sad that they would not live together anymore, she was very proud of him to have landed such a good job.

Devon and Morgan were a different matter. Both of them knew he was a spy so they knew he was not going to work for a company. But that didn't mean they were any less proud.

Morgan however was being very difficult at the moment.

"Morgan for the last time, I cannot take you with me"

"Why not? I can be very helpful on your missions"

Chuck sighed. He knew that while Morgan could sometimes be helpful, he could also be a real handful to deal with. This was war he was going into, and he was not sure he would come out of it the same person. He did not want Morgan to get involved and lose himself or worse, get himself killed.

"Buddy this is extremely dangerous. Nothing like what we had done here in LA. Lives are at stake here. I cannot take you and risk everything. Besides, I need you here to take care of Ellie for me" He winked subtly at Devon at this, who understood and chuckled.

Morgan sighed, "I understand man. Don't worry; I will make sure nothing happens to her."

Chuck laughed, "I knew I could count on you"

Now, he was at Rome for his new mission. It had been three days since he had landed here. He has been busy setting up the base of operations in the mansion he was currently staying and now was the first time he had a break to think about things. He, Casey and June had gotten to know each other on a good level. They were capable of working together without any problems. While it would take a while to gain the level of trust his previous team had, they were well on their way.

June was like none of the agents he had ever known. She was outgoing, bright and very sweet. She could smile so widely that the room would brighten up just the bit. At first he thought it was a ploy to get him to trust her, but then she gave him her codename, Trianthen, which triggered a flash. That cleared up any doubts.

She got along well with Casey. The old Casey might have said something about a skirt, but this was a mellowed out version. He had not said a single word to ridicule her agency. She had also gained his respect when he was given her background story.

But she and Chuck had been in good sync since the time they met. Being a closet nerd, she was able to freely talk about all the nerdy stuff that she had missed out on during missions much to Casey's dismay. They had so much fun talking about the latest Iron Man movie and Thor movie. They were definitely very good friends. That enabled Chuck to be more open and they were already developing a very good partnership.

At times, the ghost of Sarah would hang over the team, but June's natural attitude helped them overcome it. He knew that it would take a while to get over her, but he was determined to do it. He would keep his distance from everyone, except Casey. Casey was someone who could help Chuck balance his spy life, and personal life. He would be his anchor, so that he doesn't get washed away into the ocean known as the spy life.

With June

Charles Carmichael, who now she knew was Charles Bartowski, aka Chuck, was an enigma. He was such a nerd, yet he was a very cool person. She had a good time speaking to him about all sorts of nerdy topics. Her training had tried to nail into her the concept of loneliness, but she was not like the regular spy. She was self-aware. She knew when to be relaxed and nerdy, and when to be serious and dangerous. Just because she could be the girl next door, does not mean that she was any less dangerous.

John Casey was something she had not expected. All the stories she had heard about him were that he was a burnout, a cold school killer who shoots first and asks questions later. He had a reputation for being very ruthless and violent, and not being much of a people person. But what she was seeing was not really a match for what she heard. Looks like he had mellowed out a bit. She hoped that would help her get along with him well.

This operation was looking like a dream mission. She got two very competent and capable spies for partners and a goal that was very important to National Security. She was looking forward to starting missions with them soon.

Unknown location, Rome

A man could be seen dragging a dead body of another man towards a trash bin in an alley. There was absolutely no blood on him, but he looked pale with his eyes wide open. The man lifted him up and threw him into the trash bin. He simply turned around and walked away. While walking, he picked up his phone and called someone.

"It's done", he spoke in Italian.

"Good. Your payment will be credited with the hour", replied the voice, also in Italian.

"Pleasure doing business with you"
