Fatima and Rountree were chasing a suspect through the woods when suddenly, the ground began to shake softly. They had no idea where their suspect had gone, and now, they were out of range and unable to reach OPS. Suddenly, the ground was shaking harder. At first, Fatima thought it was an earthquake. She grabbed Rountree's hand, horrified as the ground began to open up.
"Run, run!" she yelled, jumping out of the car. But they were too slow, and they fell into the sinkhole, leaving the modern world.
"Woah, Fatima," Devin mumbled. He was pretty sure he'd hit his head, and he was definitely confused. "Fatima?"
"Tree?" Fatima asked, rolling over. She clumsily got to her feet and ran to her boyfriend. "What the hell is this place? Are⦠Are we alive?"
"I think so," Rountree answered. "Are you okay? You hurt?"
"N-no. You?"
"I'm good. Come on, let's see if our stuff is here too." Rountree grabbed her hand and they set off, figuring that east was as good as any other direction. Soon, they found their car. It was flipped, but at least they had some survival kits and a couple changes of clothes inside. "Okay. We have badges, I'm not sure what those will do for us here. Grab your go bag, we'll fill them with as much stuff as we can fit. Maybe we'll find someone that can help. Don't leave any weapon here."
"Where are we?" Fatima asked. She grabbed a paper terrain map and grinned as she unfolded it. "Hey, Tree? Come look at this." Once Devin was at her side again, she spoke. "Is it just me, or are we in Los Angeles before it was Los Angeles?"
"That's crazy," Rountree said, not wanting to believe it.
"Yeah, but, so is the fact that we just fell through a sinkhole and didn't die."
"Okay. Keep that, we can probably use it."
Half an hour later, they had finished packing their backpacks as full as they could get them. They'd packed their guns and ammo, two first aid kits, a box of MRE's, as well as extra clothes, water bottles, and their map.
"Where should we go? We can't stay here, we're too exposed."
"To what, Tree? Exposed to what? What's going to get us? We don't even know where we are!" Fatima tried unsuccessfully to hide the fear in her voice.
"Hey," Rountree whispered. He put his hands on her shoulders and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "I know you're scared. I am too. We're gonna figure this out, okay? We're alive, and we have each other. We're gonna be okay."
Fatima nodded a little and took a deep breath. "What are we looking for? Shelter, or people?"
"Shelter. We find shelter. We can head towards the caves, and set ourselves up a camp." Rountree gently took the map from her hands and kissed her forehead again. "The caves are about two miles north of here. Hey. Ground rules," he whispered. "Don't eat anything you can't identify. Boil the water we collect when we run out."
"Don't pet the animals," Fatima said, snickering. Rountree smiled.
"We're gonna be okay. We set up a camp in the caves, then we figure out how to build us a house." Fatima nodded softly and took his hand as they set off.
