Chapter 2: Radio Killed the Video Star
The next day, Charlie was pacing back and forth in panic mode. Her cat Keekee, was walking along with her. "Okay," Charlie said. "So, the extermination is coming in six months instead of a year. No big deal. Just a little setback. Nothing we can't handle. Just angels cutting our timetable in half. But who needs a whole year to save souls? Am I right?" Her panic was rising. "And next time, when they cut the time in half again, and again, we'll just handle it, right?!"
Vaggie walked over and grabbed Charlie. "Yes, we will."
"Oh please, ya had less than half a chance when you started all this salvation nonsense. And now…" Jack raised an eyebrow as he took out his phone, an annoyed look on his face. "Ain't no silver lining this time, toots."
Jack frowned. "That is the farthest place from helpful as you could be, Angel." She said.
"There is so a silver lining! We just… have to look a little harder for it." Charlie said.
Angel waved his phone around. "Well, while you're looking, the rest of hell's going nuts. People are already freaking out about the news. Look what's happening in the Doomsday district." He scrolled down, showing them the article as a pink message appeared, Charlie looking closer.
"Err, what is a… Donkey Show?" she asked.
Angel panicked and pulled his phone back. "Ehh, that's nothing. My boss, Val, is just freaked out over the news too. Like I said, everyone's losing their marbles."
"Yeah, that's true. Sinners are desperate. Maybe desperate enough to try anything to escape the extermination?" Vaggie said.
Charlie gasped. "This is the perfect time to recruit more sinners for the hotel!"
Angel raised an eyebrow. "Cute idea and all, but you really gonna go out in all of this?" he asked.
Jack crossed her arms. "Yeah, for once I agree with Angel. It seems a little too crazy out there right now to try anything. Maybe you should just wait until things calm down before doing anything."
Charlie frowned. "Well, it's not like people are just going to show up on our doorstep-" An explosion cut her off as the building shook. They all rushed outside to see a zeppelin armed for battle. As they watched, a voice came over an intercom. "Show yourself, Alasssstor. Come and face-" The voice stopped before coming on again. "Oh, there you are. Face my wrath!"
They heard Alastor's voice, but couldn't see him. "Who are you?" He asked.
Jack groaned and ran a hand down her face. "Not this guy."
"Who is he?" Charlie asked. Jack just gestured to the zeppelin with one hand before counting down from five with her other hand. Right when she hit one, the voice came on the intercom again.
"Who am I? Who am I? I am the great Ssssssir Pentiousssss!" Alastor suddenly appeared in front of them, materializing from his shadow. Pentious continued. "Inventor, architect of dessstruction, villain extraordinaire!"
Niffty climbed up onto Alastor's right shoulder, starstruck. "Ooooh, he's a bad boy." Alastor scooped her off him and put her on the ground.
"Well, if all that's true, you'd think I'd have heard of you." Alastor said.
"I attacked you literally last week." Pentious continued. Alastor only cocked his head. Jack would've found it funny if not for it being so annoying. "We've done battle, like twenty times!"
"Well, you must have been really bad at this." Alastor said.
"Silence!" Sir Pentious snapped. "Now cower! For when I've ssslain you, the almighty Vees will finally acknowledge me as their equal."
Niffty crawled up onto Alastor's shoulder again. "Ooh! Wait, who are the Vees?" she asked.
"Oh, nobody important." Alastor answered. Jack smirked as Alastor brought out his shadows and started attacking Pentious. He and Jack laughed maniacally as the they heard Pentious screaming.
"No! Please stop!" he yelled.
"Um… Alastor! I think he's had enough!" Charlie exclaimed.
"Nah. He's got a few more hits in him." Angel said.
"Please, Charlie, do not stop this." Jack said, struggling to hold her giggles in. For all that she had changed, she still enjoyed enemies getting what was coming to them. "This is the funniest thing that's happened since the news!"
Sir Pentious fell from the ship and landed face first in front of Alastor, the latter twirling his staff as he stopped his attack. "Thanks for another forgettable experience." Alastor said.
"Thank you… for letting your guard down!" Pentious snapped as he ripped off a piece of Alastor's suit with his tail. He laughed for a moment before he looked up to see Alastor's full demon form in front of him as a green explosion occurred, sending Pentious flying, the snake screaming as he flew out of sight.
Alastor turned to face everyone. "Well, it looks as though I need a visit to the tailor! Best of luck, chums." He turned to leave before Vaggie stopped him.
"Wait, you're leaving? Alastor! We need your help! We need you to do your job." Vaggie said.
Angel pointed to the huge hole in the wall. "We need a wall."
Alastor turned back around. "Of course!" Can't let my new project fall into disrepair already. What would the papers say?!" He snapped his fingers and some of his little black ink demons appeared with construction tools as Alastor walked away. As Angel started flirting with one of the larger muscular ones, Jack sighed as she walked back inside.
"I'll take a look at the internal stuff, make sure the electrical stuff works." She said, cracking her knuckles. Charlie and Vaggie watched after her, sharing a look before sighing simultaneously.
Six hours later, the demons were just about finished with repairs while Jack had almost finished her survey when Alastor came walking in, his suit apparently fixed before he walked up the stairs, no doubt heading towards his radio tower. Jack then looked and saw Charlie and Vaggie come in from going around town, Charlie throwing herself on the couch in obvious exhaustion.
Angel came in. "Sooooo? How'd it go?" He asked.
Vaggie sighed. "Not a single new recruit."
"Yeah, well, who would wanna use their remaining days not screwing and fighting." Angel said. As he took out his phone, a knock sounded on the door, which Vaggie went to go answer. There was a crash and Jack came running, raising an eyebrow when she saw Sir Pentious at the door, currently on the floor, a hand on the floor, as Vaggie clenched her fist. She took out her spear and made to attack when Sir Pentious yelled.
"Wait, wait, wait! I come in peace!" he exclaimed.
Charlie came up behind Vaggie. "Vaggie, what's the problem?" She gaped when she saw Pentious. "Oh! Hello again!"
"I didn't come looking for a fight." Pentious said. "I uhh… I heard that you're helping people, people who want to be better."
Charlie gasped and ran over, grabbing his hand and leading him inside. "You heard right! Welcome to our home of healing, our resort of restoration, our-"
Angel came around the corner. "Are you freaking nuts!? This chump was trying to kill us like literally six hours ago! And now you wanna bring him in here to live with us?"
"I agree with Angel." Jack said, crossing her arms, her ears pulled back. "This guy could attack us in our sleep. Why would he attack first and then come crawling here to ask for help?"
"Come on, guys! This place is about second chances, and who deserves one more than this slithery… slippery… special little man!" Charlie exclaimed.
Angel looked at Vaggie. "Aren't you supposed to protect this place?"
Vaggie was about to respond, but when Charlie gave her the puppy dog eyes, Vaggie couldn't help but fold and give in. "I guess he's not that much of a threat without his war machine or even with the war machine." Charlie gave Vaggie the biggest hug, twirling her around before setting her back down.
"Oh! Thank you thank you thank you thank you! Sir Pentious, welcome to the Hazbin Hotel!" She led him inside to the hotel.
"Oh no, darling! Thank you! You won't regret this!" Pentious said.
Angel and Jack soon followed. "Eh, I give him a week, tops." Angel said.
"I give him a day." Jack threw in, getting Angel to laugh.
They followed Charlie as she showed Pentious around. "So this is the bar and bartender. This is the curtain, and this is the new wall after you broke the last one, heh, and oh! Oh! This is the-"
Vaggie grabbed her to calm her down. "You don't have to show him every detail."
Charlie laughed. "Sorry, I'm just so excited to have our first real guest!"
"Uh what am I then?" Angel asked.
"A lazy freeloader?" Jack asked.
"Constantly make us look bad, sexually harass the staff and have literally never once tried to improve." Vaggie said.
"What she means is, it's just nice to have someone interested for once." Charlie said. Jack looked at Angel, noting the down expression and she reached up to pat his arm.
"Hey, don't worry about it." Jack said. "We still love you being here." Angel gave her a small smile.
"Thanks, Jackie. I appreciate the effort." He said as he walked away.
Charlie meanwhile had brought Pentious to see more. "You've already met our maintenance manager, Jack." She gestured to Jack, who gave a half wave. "And over here we have our maid, Niffty."
Niffty, who had been playing with Keekee, gasped when she saw him. "The bad boy is back!" She climbed up on Pentious, holding his collar and looking at him with her usual insane look, a sadistic smile creeping on her face, which had Pentious noticeably creeped out. She leaned in and whispered, "Never leave me again."
"We're about eighty percent sure she's harmless. And over here we have-" Charlie continued as she started up the stairs, running into Alastor. "Oh! Alastor! Our gracious facility manager! You've met our newest guest, Sir Pentious…"
"Ah yes!" Alastor exclaimed. "You're the one who ruined my coat!" His eyes glowed as he said sinisterly, "I definitely remember you now."
Pentious gulped nervously as Charlie continued. "Well, I guess this is a great time for your first lesson!" She cleared her throat. "'How to apologize!' The first step to becoming a better person is to admit when you are wrong. Why don't you give it a try?" As she said that, she gently pushed Pentious in front of Alastor.
"Yes…uhm… Mr uhm… Radio Demon sir, please forgive me for attacking you and ruining your lovely coat." He brought out the scrap of cloth he had pulled of Alastor's jacket. "Uhm… here." He held it out for Alastor to take.
Alastor took it from him, looking at it curiously. "Ah-ho! Not many people have been able to take even this much off me! It must have meant quite a lot to you." Alastor's grin turned sinister again as he set the cloth on fire, green flames engulfing it, leaving a stunned Charlie and Pentious. That was when Charlie suggested gathering everyone together for an exercise.
"Now, with a new resident, I think it's important we all get to know each other! So we are going to play a little game. Everyone, follow me!" Everyone watched as Charlie started, clapping twice between every sentence she said. "My name is Charlie. I like to sing! And when we get to know each other, it's the greatest thing!" She gestured for Sir Pentious to take over. He did so, copying Charlie's claps after each sentence he said.
"My name is Sir Pentious. I like to build. And despite my stupid Egg Bois, I think I'm very skilled." He smiled nervously before stepping away.
"Angel." Charlie said, but the spider demon didn't look interested.
"This is stupid." He said. Jack crossed her arms. She didn't necessarily think it was stupid, just strange, but she wasn't about to say that out loud.
"This is not stupid!" Charlie said, clapping as she spoke. "It's just a game! Sir Pentious did well so now please try to do the same!"
"I am too sober for this." Angel grumbled. Vaggie glared at him.
"Well, get used to it and learn how to play. This is gonna be your whole day!" As Vaggie spoke, she clapped.
Charlie's next idea involved dressing up and reading lines she had printed out on paper in some sort of live performance. Angel and Pentious starred as a drug user and innocent child respectively. Jack had to suppress a shudder at the ridiculousness of it. She could also see that Angel was still bothered by Charlie and Vaggie's words from earlier because once they were done and Charlie had congratulated Pentious, Angel only went upstairs to his room, without saying much.
Jack got up and went upstairs, knocking on Angel's door. After a couple of minutes, he answered and she looked up at him.
"How are you doing, Angel?" She asked. "And don't say you're okay."
"What does it matter?" Angel said. "Charlie obviously likes having a 'real' guest here. She probably doesn't want me here anymore."
Jack shook her head. "I don't think so. She's just excited that what she has planned is working and actually brought someone else in. Give it time and things will be back to normal."
"Yeah, whatever, Jackie." Angel said as he pushed past her into the hall. Jack sighed as she watched him leave before starting towards her own room, running her hand through her red highlights.
As she walked, she passed Zen, who put a hand on her shoulder to stop her. "You okay?" He asked.
"I'm not the one who should be asked that." Jack said. "I'm more concerned about Angel. He's really letting Pentious being here mess with him."
"I can kind of understand where he's coming from." Zen said. "He feels like Charlie doesn't think he's worth anything now that Pentious is here." He squeezed Jack's shoulder. "Get some sleep and we'll talk to Charlie in the morning." Jack nodded and Zen continued down the hall to his room as Jack continued in the opposite direction to hers.
Suddenly, Jack heard yelling and rushed downstairs. She stopped as she spotted Charlie and Vaggie already there, both in their pajamas, Charlie yawning.
"What's going on?" Charlie asked.
"This little jerk is a traitor!" Angel exclaimed.
"Preposterous!" Pentious said as Jack entered the room. "I would never betray you. You… are my best friends!" He hugged both Charlie and Vaggie, Jack barely managing to duck out of the way.
"Uh huh." Angel said. "Then explain this!" He lifted one of the books to reveal a camera, which left Charlie shocked. That was when Pentious realized he had been caught, taking out his wrist watch.
"Ah! Ah! Abort! Abort! S.O.S! Agent Pentious in need of immediate evacuation!" Pentious exclaimed.
Jack's ears twitched as she heard Vox's annoying voice come on the watch. "Pentious? Wait… you were caught?! It hasn't even been a day!"
"Please!" Pentious begged. "You've got to get me out of here!"
"I can't believe we thought you could handle even something this simple! Do us a favor, if they don't kill you, go ahead and do it yourself! You miserable failure!" And the visual shut off, leaving Pentious crying.
"I…I… just make it quick I guess… not that I deserve it." Pentious said. He laid on the ground as Vaggie came up with her spear, ready to pierce his skull. Jack herself contemplated killing him as well.
"Gladly." Vaggie said, but Charlie stopped her, singing some mushy song about sorry to Pentious. The entire time, Angel and Vaggie were ready to kill Pentious while Jack crossed her arms and leaned up against the door frame, silently listening and still debating killing Pentious as well, then thought better of it.
Once the song finished, Niffty appeared at the door. "I hated that song! Why are you so lame?!" She rushed up and kicked him on one of his tail eyes before walking away.
Everyone else slowly walked out as Jack peered at the communicator on the floor. She sighed before walking out of the room herself.
Hope this chapter was good! I'm really enjoying writing it!
