Chapter 2: A Twin
Another day done at school. But, it wasn't as bad as Bella thought it would be. She actually made an effort to talk to some of her 'friends'. Mike was more 'flirty' ecstatic, Jessica was reserved and kept eyeing Bella suspiciously, but Angela was more than warming to Bella. Angela was the kind of girl who was good down to her core. So, Bella leaned more next to Angela for further discussion during lunch. She found out everyone was whispering about the break-up more than she realized.
"Why does it seem the more miserable something is, the juicier the gossip?" Bella mumbled into her milk as she drank it.
"Misery loves company Bella, that will never change." Angela snickered.
"So, it would seem, but thank you for not judging me Ange." Bella looked at Angela with a smile.
"Although that's a sad smile, I'll take it," Angela said side-hugging Bella.
The rest of the day went well. Wasn't long until Bella found herself home. A good thing too, as it had started raining. She saw it was three thirty, her dad said he wouldn't be home until later tonight, so she decided to get a jump on the homework she needed to catch up on.
Thirty minutes later her phone rang.
"Jake, how are you?" Bella was surprised by the call. She had talked some with Jake a couple of weeks after Edward left. He was the only person she'd talk to, but not all the time.
"Hey Bells, just checking in on you. I got some time, mind if I stop by?" he asked.
Bella looked around, "No, I don't mind. Charlie won't be home until late, I'm just catching up on homework."
"Great, I'll be by soon." He said then hung up.
***At Forks Police Station***
Among all the ringing of phones, desks, there's an office towards the back of the small station. Slight decorating done by the secretary for Christmas. Not much happens in the small town, most calls are for wild animals, the occasional drunk, or small domestic disputes. What came in right now was the last thing Charlie had ever expected.
Charlie was looking down taking notes as he finished up a phone call.
There was a knock at Chief Swan's door, "Uh Chief Swan, there's a case you might want to take," said Deputy Shore.
Charlie didn't look up but waved his deputy in. The deputy plus one more body came in.
"Just sit here," mumbled Deputy Shore as the person sat down in front of Charlie's desk. Deputy Shore shut the door behind him.
"Ok, got it, thanks," Charlie said as he hung up the phone and put away the paper he was writing on.
He looked up and went wide eyed as he saw a young girl sitting across from him. Head down, hair covering her face. She looked horrible.
"What's going on Deputy?" Charlie asked, surprised. "Who's this?" he nodded towards the girl.
"Well," Deputy Shore started as he looked at the girl. "I know I'm usually in charge of runaways and kids being out of hand, but this one I think you should take." He handed Charlie a folder. "I found her when I was making my rounds outside of town. I asked her the basic questions, but she's a little reluctant to provide anything more."
Charlie took the folder, "and why did you think I should take the case?"
"Just trust me," Deputy shore went to Charlie's side and leaned in to whisper, "no one else has seen her face but me. I'm not going to ask questions." With that Deputy Shore took one last look at the girl and left, making sure to close the door behind him.
Charlie was baffled at his deputy's demeanor. Curious, he opened the folder and looked at what he had.
"So," Charlie coughed, looking up at the girl who still had her head down and face covered by matted hair. 'Poor girl, she's been through hell, and her hair is wet, damn, it's raining.' Charlie turned and looked outside.
"I'm sorry you were out in the rain, Ava. Ava Wilson?." Charlie looked at Ava. She still hadn't moved. How old are you, Ava?" Charlie saw the paper said seventeen, but just wanted to make conversation.
She fidgeted a bit, but still did not look up. Her voice was soft due to not using it much. "The paper says it in front of you."
"Well saying 'seventeen' would've taken less breath." Charlie countered.
Just then Ava tilted her head up and brushed her hair aside. "True."
To say Charlie was going to have a heart attack was understated. "BBBB Bella, what the hell?"
Ava looked confused. "I'm sorry, who's Bella?" Ava rubbed her throat, "is there any way I could have some water?"
Charlie got up and went to Ava's side and kneeled. Ava followed his movements but didn't move herself. She looked right at him, still confused. He continued to look right at her and stumbled back in shock. "you're not Bella."
"Right yeah," she pointed to herself, "name's Ava. Can I get some water please, my throat kills."
Charlie righted himself and brushed himself off and got himself together. He mumbled he'd be right back and went to get a water bottle. He came back less than a minute later and gave her the water as he closed the door and went to sit back down.
As Ava drank her water, Charlie kept looking at her. 'Exactly like Bella, face and all, except for the eyes. Renee's blue eyes. Fuck, what the hell.' "Ava, do your parents know you're missing? Did you runaway? Are there problems at home?" He had to find anything that would tell him he was wrong about what his gut was telling him.
After a few sips, and coughing, Ava found her voice. As she talked her voice became hard, mature, broken. "I was in an orphanage most of my life. Up until two years ago anyway. Then I went to a foster home." She looked away. Not wanting to say more. Charlie had a pit in his stomach.
"Were you abused?" He didn't think he wanted to hear if it was yes.
When Ava turned to face him, her eyes were hard, "Yes. Multiple times. I tried to go back to the orphanage. But they turned me away saying I signed up for this. My foster parents, my foster dad wasn't the issue. It was my foster mom. My dad was away on business a lot. My mom took her anger out on me. This last argument was the last straw. So, I took off. A couple of bus rides. A few hitchhikes, and I was here. I had woken up a few hours ago and was walking around when your deputy found me."
"Ava, if you need help, we can offer it. Get you looked at and file charges, if you want."
She shook her head, "Look Chief Swan, was it?"
He nodded to her.
She got her backpack and took out some paperwork and put it on his desk. He looked at her and she nodded towards the paperwork, and he looked through it.
"I got emancipated when I was sixteen. I've worked odd jobs to pay the bill for that, secretly. I have a driver's license for both a regular vehicle and motorcycles, because of the jobs, but I mostly had a motorcycle at the time."
Charlie looked up at her.
"Don't give me the 'dad' look. New York is ridiculous to get around in a car."
"You came all the way here, from New York?" He was shocked, again.
"Perseverance is key to anything. I wanted away from…. Her." Ava shivered and took another sip of water and sighed.
Charlie looked between Ava and her paperwork. Everything seemed legit, but he'd have his deputy investigate it. He still couldn't wrap his head around the fact that this girl, who looked exactly like Bella, with blue eyes, was sitting here in his office.
He closed the paperwork. He looked at the clock and realized he needed to get home soon. But he couldn't leave her here.
"Look, given the circumstances, I don't want you by yourself. I know you gave me this paperwork," he gestured with the paperwork in his hand," but until I can authenticate it, you need to stay somewhere safe."
Charlie got on his phone and called Deputy Shore to come in.
"Chief I don't need to be babysitted. I know the law; can I just stay in a hotel until then?"
"Let me make a phone call and I'll let you know," Charlie said.
A knock came and the door opened, "yeah Chief?"
"Can you take Ava to get something to eat while I make a phone call?" Charlie said pleading through his eyes that his deputy would understand, which thankfully, he did.
"Sure, come on kiddo," the deputy gestured with his head. "They had a mini barbeque yesterday and there's great leftovers in the back. We'll heat you up some."
Ava sighed and started turning toward the door, but the deputy stopped her. She looked up at him confused.
"Put your hair in front of you again with your head down." He spoke.
"Why?" she asked but did as she was told.
"Just until we're through the main office, most of the others are leaving now anyway, but just in case" the deputy and Ava made their way through the office.
Charlie sighed and got up to shut the door and leaned against it. "I need to give him a raise. This phone call is going to be shit." He said as he went back to his desk and began dialing a number he really didn't want to dial. After a few rings he heard a voice.
"Renee here," she said happily.
"Uhh, Renee, how are you?" Charlie tried to sound cordial, even though he knew deep down, he should yell at her.
"Charlie, well this is a surprise, how is Bella? Is she ok?" Renee asked.
"Bella's fine. She's at home."
"Oh right, you're calling from the station. Is everything ok?" she asked worriedly.
"I don't know, you tell me." Charlie began getting angry.
"I…. I don't know what you mean. I believe everything is. You and Bella are ok. Phil and I are fine." She said sounding confused.
"Aren't you missing someone?" He gritted his teeth.
"Um, no I don't believe so," however, he heard the hesitation.
"Renee, I'm going to get right to it, Bella wasn't the only one that night, was she?"
"What? I…. I don't know what you're talking about. Of of course, she was." Renee sounded mad, but there was hesitation too as she stuttered through her sentence.
"Renee, I know we've had our differences, I know I worked that night and couldn't be there with you, and we divorced, but if you had another child, I NEED TO FUCKING KNOW RIGHT NOW!" Charlie yelled through the phone. It was a good thing everyone left the office already.
"Charlie…. I…. I"
"Do not lie to me." he said with a finality to his voice that Renee had never heard before.
Renee replied, but in a whisper, "forgive me Charlie." And she hung up.
"Hello? Hello?! Renee!" Charlie yelled. He tried her number again and it went straight to voicemail. He tried three more times and the same thing.
"That bitch. Fuck!" Charlie was pacing in his office at this point. "I have another kid. Another daughter. Bella has a sister." He mumbled to himself. He heard a noise and looked to see that said daughter and his deputy were making their way towards him. "A twin."
There my lovelies. Poor Charlie. Find out Bella's reaction next chapter. Until then :)
